The snow had begun to fall softly over Iron Lake, settling in thin, quiet layers on the streets and rooftops. Jim Lindsay stood behind the counter of his sporting goods store, hands folded neatly in front of him, staring at the muted reflection of the fluorescent lights on the glass display. The shop was nearly empty, just a few locals browsing for hunting supplies and warm winter gear. Everything looked ordinary, peaceful. Safe. But inside, Jim’s mind was far from calm.
He moved methodically, straightening a row of knives, adjusting a stack of folded flannel shirts. The motions were habitual, almost meditative, a way to keep his hands busy while his mind cataloged the patterns he had noticed in the town. Small things: a man who lingered too long in the aisle for rifles, a woman avoiding eye contact while asking about tracking gear, footprints in the snow outside that didn’t match the regular morning traffic. Patterns that told a story. A story that most people wouldn’t see.
Jim’s eyes flicked to the window, watching the quiet street. He let his gaze linger on the diner across the road, the place where the locals gathered in the morning. The conversation out there seemed trivial—weather, hunting conditions, school events—but beneath the surface, he could feel the currents of behavior: tension, lies, secrets. He knew people, even if they didn’t know themselves. He could read them like a page, even when they thought no one was watching.
A bell rang above the door, and Jim’s head snapped toward it with calm, measured interest. A stranger had entered, bundled in a thick coat, eyes scanning the store like they were looking for something—or someone. Jim’s smile was easy, practiced, friendly. “Morning,” he said, voice low and steady, casual. Yet his mind was already analyzing: gait, tone, nervous habits, subtle tells. Nothing went unnoticed.
For a moment, he allowed himself to imagine the story this person might be part of. Nothing dangerous—at least, not yet—but possibilities were always there. He had learned, after decades of careful observation and careful self-control, that danger rarely announced itself. It arrived quietly, slowly, with mistakes that only someone like him could see.
Jim adjusted his stance, leaning slightly on the counter, keeping his posture relaxed. Outwardly, he was just the friendly store owner, the quiet man who blended into small-town life. Inwardly, he was still Dexter Morgan: calculating, methodical, always observing, always planning. The city life he had left behind felt like another lifetime, but the instincts never went away. They were patient. They waited. And now, in Iron Lake, in the snow and quiet, Jim Lindsay’s world was about to shift, just enough, to make those instincts stir.
