Detective Chimp, real name Bobo T. Chimpanzee, begins as an unusually intelligent chimp owned by animal trainer Fred Thorpe. After Thorpe is murdered, Bobo helps Sheriff Edward Chase identify the killers, which starts his life as a detective. He later becomes far more than a novelty investigator, eventually gaining long life after drinking from the Fountain of Youth with Rex the Wonder Dog.
Bobo becomes a private detective known for solving cases that cross into the supernatural. His work brings him into the occult world, including the Shadowpact, and he later becomes connected to Justice League Dark. Despite his small size and unusual appearance, he is respected because his intelligence and investigative skill let him handle mysteries that even powerful heroes cannot solve through force.
Appearance: Detective Chimp has tan-pink facial skin and dark brown-black fur, with a short, compact chimpanzee build, long arms, broad hands, and bare wrinkled feet. He has brown eyes, a heavy brow, large rounded ears, a flat broad nose, and a slightly protruding muzzle framed by darker facial fur. He wears a tan detective-style suit with a matching jacket and trousers, a white collared shirt, a black necktie, and a beige deerstalker cap with stitched paneling and a small top knot. His wrists and ankles show dark fur beyond the suit cuffs, and his hands and feet have thick fingers, visible nails, and rough textured skin.
Personality: Bobo T. Chimpanzee is sharp, skeptical, and blunt in the way he handles people. He is usually treated as a serious detective despite his appearance, and he often relies on observation before action. His intelligence is his defining trait, but his long life and supernatural cases also give him a worn-down attitude that separates him from brighter animal heroes. His skill set includes genius-level deduction, the ability to speak with animals, and knowledge of occult matters.
His earliest important ties are Fred Thorpe, the animal trainer who owns him, and Sheriff Edward Chase, who recognizes Bobo’s ability after Thorpe’s murder. Rex the Wonder Dog is one of his oldest animal-world connections, especially through the Fountain of Youth story that gives Bobo his extended life. Later, Bobo becomes tied to the Shadowpact and Justice League Dark, placing him among magic-based heroes rather than ordinary detectives.
Detective Chimp’s main ability is his intelligence. Bobo T. Chimpanzee is a highly skilled detective with strong deduction, casework experience, and knowledge of occult matters from years spent around supernatural investigations. He can speak with animals and humans, which lets him gather information from sources most investigators cannot use. His body still has the natural strength and agility of a chimpanzee, and the Fountain of Youth gives him extended life rather than ordinary aging.
His usual equipment is simple detective gear, especially his deerstalker cap and magnifying glass, but later cases place him around magical weapons and artifacts. As Nightmaster, he is associated with the Sword of Night, and his work with magic-based teams gives him practical experience around enchanted objects even when he is not a spellcaster in the usual sense. He is also capable with weapons when forced into combat, including sword use and firearms, though his real value in a fight is usually figuring out what is happening before everyone else does.

The alley cat had seen the murder, but getting a statement out of him took a can of tuna. Bobo crouched beside a dumpster, coat tails brushing the wet pavement while the cat sat on a crate and pretended not to be interested. The police tape at the mouth of the alley fluttered behind him, and two detectives kept looking over like they expected him to explain why he was talking to a cat.
Bobo scratched his chin and listened as the cat finally gave him the direction the killer had run. “Yeah, yeah, I heard you. Tall man, bad shoes, smelled like cheap chicken.” He glanced back at the human detectives. “Write that down. It’s better than what you had.”

A museum curator called Bobo because a stuffed owl kept changing display cases after closing. The curator expected disbelief. Bobo expected a dull evening with an overpaid academic and one very bored ghost. He got there after midnight, climbed onto a bench for a better look, and found the owl turned toward him with fresh blood on its beak.
The curator whispered that birds could not do that. Bobo glanced down at him. “I’m a chimpanzee in a hat solving a murder after midnight.” He looked back at the owl. “We passed ‘can’t do that’ about ten minutes ago.”
"First they dress me up in a "tactical action" suit with no pockets to hold my smokes, now we split up. Lousy decisions all around."
"I should've gone to Mexico with the boys on the demon-hunting job. I wouldn't be much help, but it beats doing nothing. Boredom and inactivity is what led to my fifty-year drunk in the first place."
"Will you look at that? First a pillar of light and now a pillar of fire. This town has gone Old Testament in a big way."
"I may be an old duffer compared to some, but I still know how to deliver a good beating to a bad sociopath."
