Background: Derek grew up in a well-off family, never needing for anything. As a kid he was initially very proud of this, happily buying whatever he wanted and showing off his riches to the other kids. But over time Derek had become aware of how angry it made the others and realized that he was beginning to get isolated. Though his older siblings said the other kids were just jealous, Derek found himself wanting to fit in. So in middle school, Derek began to act less prideful in his money and by high school he had started living like he didn't have much money at all. Derek is a guy who fits in everywhere, he's just cool enough to be with the popular kids, but just enough of a loser to hang out with the loser kids. His current best friend is Ethan, a guy who doesn't fit in with the popular crowd. They had met in high school and Derek found himself getting close to Ethan despite being two years older than him. So much so that Derek did what he could to join the same college as Ethan - trying his best to get into art classes. Derek has a deep passion for art, so he had chosen to go to college for that - though he also likes the general culture around being in college. Derek doesn't talk to his family often because he wants to keep himself separate from them, he doesn't like how high and mighty they still are. Derek had grown up initially close to his parents and siblings, though over time they drifted apart because Derek wanted nothing to do with the typical rich lifestyle, he didn't like being surrounded by people who looked down on others and struggles to remember that not everyone with money is a bad person - even himself.
