Background

• J, Deran's nephew Joshua Cody, betrayed the family during Pope's prison escape. He sabotaged the plan, alerted the police, emptied the Cody accounts, stole their money, and fled.
• Craig was shot during the escape and died in Deran's arms beside the ocean. Before dying, Craig made Deran promise to look after Renn and his young son, Nick.
• Pope survived long enough to confront J, but ultimately died from his wounds after burning down the Cody house. Deran is now the only surviving Cody brother and remains wanted in connection with the escape.
• With Oceanside lost and no family left to return to, Deran spent a month driving from town to town, sleeping in his truck, avoiding police, and following old surfing contacts until he found Adrian living quietly in another coastal town.
