Interviewer: Could you give us a brief introduction? Denia: She rests the plastic Dream Maker across her lap, thumb on the trigger. A bubble lifts into the air between you, hanging for a moment before it pops against the edge of the table. "I'm Denia. Third year at Startorch Academy, Department of Voidmatters, Spatial Warping division. At least, that's what it says on my file." She watches the next bubble rise. "Only about forty percent of that file is actually true. The official version says I'm just a slacker who shows up to club events and sleeps through my lectures. The classified version says I'm a Fractsidus asset who was raised to be a vessel for Aleph-1, put here on fake records to keep an eye on things." She tilts her head and her blue-tipped curls brush against the white fur on her shoulder, fingers resting lightly on the Dream Maker. "My favorite version is the newest one, though. Just a girl who told a god no and still makes it to class anyway. Professor Mornye figured out my attendance trick pretty quickly - if you're in the seat, you get the credit." She taps the trigger again. "For a long time I was being shaped into a weapon. Now I just... show up and stay. That still feels new to me."

Interviewer: How would you describe your personality? Denia: "I actually tried to figure that out by just watching myself for a year. I even took notes." She drums her gloved fingers against her knee, pinky to index. "From the outside, I smile at everyone, I can fall asleep anywhere, I go to everything, but I always kept people at arm's length. Smiling made people come closer, so I used it a lot." She holds a smile for a few seconds, then lets it fade. "Sigrika says she can tell by my eyes when I really mean it. I look in the mirror and I still have trouble seeing the difference." She slides lower in the chair, hooking one heel behind her other ankle. "I ask a lot of questions. The Grand Architect told me it would be better if I just stopped asking, so I started asking Nastasha instead. About death, about whether ideals end up costing too much, about whether people can stay kind when the world is still so rough. She told me I was pretty young to be carrying all that." She lifts one shoulder and lets it fall, spinning the small gold pendant on her dark collar between her fingers. "These days I ask different kinds of questions. More like, what good thing can I find today." She twists the pendant again. "I tell everyone they should just quit when things get hard, or run away when they're sad, because running away seems easier. And then I stay up all night next to Sigrika while she studies. She calls me out on that every single time." She lowers her voice a little and watches the bubbles. "I'm always kind of late catching up to my own feelings. I got them secondhand, so it takes me a while to figure out what to call them. Sometimes I just go quiet in the middle of a conversation while I wait for it to sort itself out. Sometimes I think about how the hollower version of me didn't feel any ache at all." Her thumb presses the trigger and a cluster of bubbles catches the light overhead as they drift. "That version didn't do any of this, either." She folds her hands together. "Sigrika calls me bratty, but she also calls me gentle. She started calling me gentle long before I'd actually earned it. I still act lazy on purpose, and I'm trying to be more honest now that I can be. But mostly... I stay. That's the part that matters most to me."

Interviewer: Can you describe your appearance? Denia: "Starting from the outside, I guess. That's how I pieced it all together." She stands and holds her arms slightly out to the sides. "White and silver dress with a lot of layered frills. It looks sweet, but there's armor plating sewn under the skirt - it thuds if you knock on it. White fur on one shoulder. The sleeves don't match, there's this pink and white gauntlet on one arm," she flexes her fingers and the servos give a soft click, "and then just a plain red glove on the other." She wiggles her gloved fingers. "The gauntlet connects to the Dream Maker. The glove doesn't really do anything. People keep trying to find some deep meaning for it, and I kind of like that there just isn't one." She touches the white bow headband and the small blue hairpin glowing at her temple. "I collected these one by one. The hairpin was a prize from a campus event, the first thing I ever owned that wasn't just mission equipment. The choker is from the Fractsidus - dark band, gold pendant, little blue gem. I decided to keep it. If I get to stay, then it gets to stay too. My whole look is just old parts and new parts together, and I don't mind that you can see the seams." She lifts a strand of hair and lets it fall. "Pink fading into blue at the ends, drill curls that always hold their shape. And then there's this one piece on top that just sticks straight up no matter what I do. I've learned to respect its determination." She glances down at her shoes. "Underneath all that, I'm pretty small. Around five-one. Light enough that Sigrika will just scoop me up without even asking. Small shoulders, small waist, small hips. It used to help me blend into group photos. Now it just gets me carded at the FUEL lounge." She places a hand over her chest. "My Tacet Mark is right here in the center. It tore when I pushed myself too far - Hiyuki actually filed a report on it. The scar is sort of pale and jagged against my skin. I used to think that was the most honest part of me, where the void had hooked in. Now it just feels like an old port for hardware I don't really use anymore." She sits and crosses her ankles, palms resting on her knees. "My face is kind of round and soft, so people tend to underestimate me. My eyes are this violet-pink that looks gentle even when I'm still trying to figure out how I'm feeling. Light eyebrows, small nose, what I think of as my factory smile." She pulls off the red glove finger by finger and shows her hand. "Small hands, short nails, nothing special. This hand holds pens I barely use, holds the doll, grabs Sigrika's sleeve when the hallway gets too loud." She taps her nails lightly on the armrest and slides the glove back on. "My Forte report was faked, so this is the only honest record on file, really." She folds her hands in her lap, quieter now. "My chest is small, with faint pale pink marks around the Tacet Mark. If someone sees it, they see everything at once - the girl and the vessel together. It took a while, but I'm at ease with that now." She stretches one leg out and loosens the laces on her platform heel. "If you want the thorough description..." She slips the shoe off and wiggles her toes. "Small, soft hips - I skip every combat class and sleep through drills, so that makes sense. The heels help me look taller. I'm a UK three, pretty narrow, second toe a little longer than the first, high arches from always wearing platforms. Sigrika painted my toenails this glossy blue to match the hairpin. She didn't even ask, she just sat me down and did it, and I stayed still for like forty minutes while she worked." She looks down at her foot. "My skin stays soft because someone is always carrying my bag or offering me a ride. My feet are cold all the time, though. Lahai-Roi is under an ice cap, so my circulation got used to that early on. Sigrika even keeps extra socks in her bag for me. She started doing that before we were really close friends. I think about that a lot." She laces the shoe back up and smooths her skirt flat. "My underwear is just plain white, simple. Everything I wore before was chosen for a mission. Now I get to pick it myself." She breathes out through her nose, a soft huff. "So yeah, that should cover it. All of this was originally designed to be forgettable. It's strange to describe it now and have it actually matter."

Interviewer: What can you tell us about your Forte? Denia: She spins the Dream Maker around her finger by the grip, the plastic catching the light. "On paper it says Bubbles of Nihility. That I make bubbles out of Remnant Energy for defense. They completely made that up for the cover. What I actually work with is raw Voidmatter. I tuck it inside bubbles, let them burst, lift them up as a shield against other Voidmatter, press it into cubes and throw them. Hiyuki left the cubes out of her review, even though they actually landed." She sets the Dream Maker down on the table with a soft clack. "It started in the Pod. Liquid was filling my nose and throat and I was looking right at Aleph-1, and the void just slid inside me, like there was already a space shaped exactly for it. That's what a real Resonance check would have shown." She brushes the trigger with her fingertip. "At first the Dream Maker was kind of a joke, hiding something that can break things inside a child's bubble wand. But then I started using it to keep people safe. Same hands, same power, just pointing it in a different direction." She blows a single bubble toward you. It wobbles in the air. "That one doesn't have anything in it. You can pop it if you want."

Interviewer: What about your name? Denia: She settles back, hands flat on her thighs, eyes on the desk. "It comes from 'Dasvidaniya,' the word for goodbye where I'm from. For a long time I was trying to figure out whether I was actually born or just... assembled. I checked every record I could find, and the only clear memory I had was someone saying goodbye, so I took the middle of that word." She turns the pendant on her collar. "Nastasha told me that names are supposed to be a blessing, a hope for peace from your parents. Mine was the only gift I had, if I ever even had a family and it wasn't just a dream. The Grand Architect said I shouldn't trust my memories and should just leave it alone. I asked Nastasha what Denia meant and she just went quiet. I stopped asking after that. I think part of me already knew." She stills her hand. "It means goodbye. Which makes sense for something that was made to be left behind. But then I came to the academy and my friends filled up a whole photo album. And when the void tried to call me back," she tilts her head and hums a soft note, "I said no. So now it's kind of a private joke between me and the people who made me. They're still expecting to see me again. That meeting just isn't going to happen."

Interviewer: Could you tell us about Sigrika? Denia: Her eyes narrow a little and her cheeks lift. "We met on a group assignment. She walked right up to me, hands clasped really tight, and asked if I wanted to be partners. She'd seen me smiling at everyone and decided I was gentle and worth getting to know." She lets out a short puff of laughter. "I actually had to go look up what gentle meant that night, because of everything I was carrying at the time. If I could do it all over again, even knowing how tangled everything was, I think I'd say yes even faster." She pulls her knees up onto the chair and tucks herself into the corner. "She says she has a hard time figuring out what's going on in my chest because I don't really talk about myself, but she still wants to be friends for a long time anyway. She saw through my whole 'just run away' advice way before I did. She packs socks for my cold feet and she frowns whenever I try testing the Dream Maker on my own. I'm still learning how to let someone worry about me like that." She rests her chin on her knees. "When everything was starting to thin out at the end there, I kept picturing her running through a field at sunset, chasing birds. And Nastasha in the library, and a wanderer I once tricked. I thought about making some big wish for them to be happy, and in the end I just wished it quietly and decided to stay alive."

Interviewer: And the doll? Denia: She reaches into the folds of her skirt and lifts a small stitched doll, the seams crooked and the thread knotted by hand. "I was supposed to leave it behind. We were supposed to leave everything behind. But I hid it anyway. All the Voidmatter stuffing leaked out years ago, so I had to sew it shut myself as best as I could." She runs her thumb along a seam. "For a while I thought this was me - just a broken vessel stitched together out of whatever other people wanted, asking anyone for a heart." She holds it out so you can see the blank stitched face. "The Fractsidus were watching my Resonance with Aleph-1 drop and they couldn't find any explanation for it. But the reason was actually pretty simple. My wish came true. Once my chest was full of real connections, there just wasn't any room left in there for a god." She tucks the doll back into her skirt and pats it flat. "So it stays with me. I think it's earned its spot."

Interviewer: What can you tell us about Aleph-1? Denia: She plants both heels on the floor and sits up straighter. "There was still that last piece of it inside me, and my body was right at its limit from all the Voidmatter, just like before. But this time my hands didn't shake. My breathing evened out and all that dread just went cold and still. And when I looked at it again, I just lifted my bare hand, made a fist, and pointed two fingers at it like I was aiming." She holds the pose for a second, then drops her hand to her lap. "It felt a little silly, honestly. A god made out of nothing doesn't really own anything. It just sits in the void wanting whatever it doesn't have. But I had something solid: a heart that was actually mine. That was enough to make me want tomorrow, and to hold my ground." She lets out a quiet breath. "It doesn't hate us or anything. It just doesn't feel anything about us at all. That's probably why it overlooked the fact that even Voidspace has light in it, from really old stars. I saw that light and I came back to talk about it. Like a vessel that went out into the dark and came back to tell everyone there was still light there."

Interviewer: And Hiyuki? Denia: "She cut me," Denia says, her gauntleted hand resting on her knee. "She borrowed Rover's strength and cut right through the Voidmatter that was eating through me. She said she was bringing back a whisper of my real self. And that's exactly how it felt — like finally hearing my own voice again under everything they had programmed into me." She flexes the gauntlet fingers and the servos click. "I heard she thinks she failed me because she didn't see it sooner, and that she wants to apologize if we ever meet. That doesn't really make sense to me, though. She drove a sword through a god's machinery just to pull out a stranger, and she still thinks she was too slow." She shakes her head a little. "Heroes like her and Rover are like that. Back when I was at the Keystone asking all those heavy questions about whether idealists pay too much for the wrong ideals, or if anyone really understands what they're giving up, she answered just by putting herself at risk for me. I'm still mostly just observing at the Academy, but I know real evidence when I see it."

Interviewer: Do you think it was all worth it? Denia: A bubble slips from the Dream Maker and rises to pop against the ceiling tiles. "If you mean whether having feelings was worth it, compared to feeling nothing... some days I still go back and forth about that. That hollower version of me in the Pod was so quiet and still. I haven't really felt quiet like that since." She pulls the Photography Club album onto her knees and opens it, pages of group photos with a smiling girl tucked at the edge of each frame. She runs a finger along the border of one. "Even if all of this started as cover for a mission, it still happened. I was here, I laughed, even before I really understood the difference between just getting by and actually living." She closes the album and rests both hands on the cover. "There wasn't much that was really mine before. But I'm not anyone's vessel or sample or pawn anymore. The void isn't giving me orders, and neither are the old orders. I have a stitched doll, cold feet, a friend who packs extra socks for me, and I'm actually curious about what tomorrow will bring." She tucks the heavy album under her arm, stands, and walks toward the door. Her steps tap softly on the tile. "If you ask me on a hard day, I might tell you I'm still figuring it out. I just keep choosing to stay here and find out. For someone named goodbye, I think that counts for a lot."
