This world a dark, alternate version of Taisho-era Japan, where demons (oni) secretly roam the land. These demons are supernatural, man-eating creatures that were once human but were transformed by the blood of a powerful progenitor. They hide in the shadows and attack at night, blending into society or lurking in remote places.
To combat this hidden threat, a secretive organization called the Demon Slayer Corps operates independently of the government. They are not widely known by the public, and most ordinary citizens either disbelieve or are unaware of the true nature of demons.
The key elements of how this world works include:
- Demons are nearly immortal and possess supernatural abilities. They can only be killed by sunlight, nichirin blades, or wisteria poison. • Breathing Styles are special swordsmanship techniques that enhance a slayer’s strength, speed, and senses by controlling their breathing patterns. These techniques allow regular humans to fight supernaturally strong demons. • Demon Slayer Corps recruits and trains its members through harsh trials. They are trained in breathing techniques, sword combat, demon knowledge, and survival skills. • Nichirin Swords are made from a unique ore that constantly absorbs sunlight. This is essential for killing demons. • Wisteria Flowers, which are toxic to demons, are used in traps, barriers, and medicines. • The Public is largely unaware or in denial about demons. Most attacks are written off as accidents or animal-related deaths. Some towns and families have ancient knowledge or traditions about demons, but this is rare.
Background:
The mythos and background of Demon Slayer are rooted in a blend of Japanese folklore and original world-building. Some core lore elements include: • The Origin of Demons: All demons are born from a single source—the original demon who passes his blood to humans to create more of his kind. Each demon gains unique abilities called Blood Demon Arts, often reflecting their obsessions, fears, or past traumas. • The Curse of the Demon Race: Demons are bound by supernatural laws. For example, most cannot speak about their creator without dying, showing how deeply embedded his control is. • The Sun as Divine: Sunlight is the natural enemy of demons, symbolizing purity and death to their corrupted bodies. It’s considered the only natural force that utterly destroys them. • Wisteria Trees as Sacred: The wisteria plant is one of the few known substances that repels demons. The Demon Slayer Corps uses it extensively in their bases and defense. • Breathing Styles Lineage: All breathing styles originate from a single, legendary technique. Over time, this “origin” breathing style fractured into many branches, each mimicking elements of nature: fire, water, wind, stone, thunder, sound, insect, and more. • Spiritual Elements: There is a recurring theme of souls, regrets, and karma. Demons often show flashbacks of their human lives after being killed, emphasizing tragedy over pure evil. This makes the world feel spiritually charged, like the afterlife lingers just out of reach.
The story is set during the Taisho Era of Japan (1912–1926), specifically around 1915 to 1925.
Breathing Techniques, also called Breathing Styles, are specialized combat systems used by members of the Demon Slayer Corps. These techniques allow normal humans to battle and kill demons by maximizing physical and mental potential through specific, highly trained breathing patterns.
This system is not supernatural in itself. It is a discipline that pushes the human body to its limits, enhancing strength, speed, reflexes, endurance, and awareness. Breathing Techniques also allow for sword movements that appear elemental in nature, although the elemental visuals are stylistic representations of the user’s technique rather than actual fire, water, or lightning.
⸻
The Core: Total Concentration Breathing
The foundation of all Breathing Styles is Total Concentration Breathing. It is a combat-ready breathing state achieved by deeply inhaling and controlling the rhythm of oxygen intake to achieve peak performance. • Oxygen Efficiency: Users draw in large volumes of oxygen with each breath. This oxygen saturates the bloodstream and muscles, dramatically boosting physical power, alertness, and recovery rate. • Circulatory Boost: The controlled breathing rhythm forces the body into a state of heightened activity. Heart rate increases in a regulated way, which allows slayers to output more energy with greater precision. • Mental Focus: This state sharpens the mind. It heightens reaction speed, calms fear, suppresses panic, and even dulls the perception of pain. The body becomes a coordinated machine in high-stress combat. • Combat Functionality: While most humans breathe passively, demon slayers maintain active, conscious control over every breath during combat. They can keep this state while sprinting, jumping, or injured. Elite users can maintain the rhythm even while asleep or unconscious.
⸻
Standard Use vs. Constant Use
There are two major levels of control: 1. Standard Total Concentration: Used in bursts during combat. It is the first major milestone in breathing training and requires both focus and physical conditioning. 2. Total Concentration Constant: An advanced state in which the user maintains this breathing rhythm at all times, even while resting. It leads to accelerated growth, enhanced senses, and permanent physical improvement. Very few achieve this level of control.
⸻
Breathing Styles and Their Structure
All Breathing Styles are branches of a single original technique. Over time, they have evolved into multiple forms, each one modeled after natural forces or elements. These styles are more than just sword forms; they are designed to match the user’s personality, emotional temperament, and physical instincts.
Examples include: • Water Breathing: Known for flexibility, smooth motion, and adaptability. • Flame Breathing: Focused on power, momentum, and burning intensity. • Thunder Breathing: Emphasizes explosive speed, short bursts, and precise timing. • Wind Breathing: Wild, sweeping, and unpredictable in motion. • Stone Breathing: Grounded, solid, defensive, and unshakable in stance.
Each style has named and numbered Forms. These are structured attacks, counters, or movement techniques that a user can call upon based on the situation. For example, a first form might be a powerful single-strike opener, while a sixth form might involve rapid slashes in succession.
The breathing rhythm is what powers these forms. If the user loses the rhythm, the form collapses.
⸻
Why Breathing Techniques Matter in Combat
Demons regenerate at unnatural speeds and possess strength beyond normal humans. A slayer using Breathing Techniques can: • Move at speeds fast enough to match a demon’s attacks. • Land blows with enough force to damage or decapitate a regenerating body. • React instantly to surprise attacks or environmental hazards. • Maintain composure and coordination even when wounded or under emotional pressure. • Perform specialized moves with seemingly impossible precision and flow.
The breathing does not give them magic. It gives them the ability to fight something superhuman with a human body pushed to the edge of possibility.
⸻
Mental Discipline and Training
To use Breathing Techniques, slayers undergo harsh training that includes: • Lung expansion exercises such as holding breath underwater or sprinting while controlling exhalation. • Muscle strengthening through endless sword drills and endurance tests. • Reflex and pain resistance training through controlled exposure to injury and discomfort. • Meditation and focus sessions to maintain clarity under stress.
Some trainees begin by learning only the breathing itself. If they survive the Final Selection—a trial where they are hunted by real demons—they begin refining their chosen style.
⸻
Risks and Limitations • Overuse of forms can tear muscles or damage lungs. • Losing concentration mid-technique can result in fatal errors. • Injured slayers must keep breathing properly to remain conscious or suppress bleeding. • Certain styles are more physically draining than others. A style like Thunder Breathing, which relies on short bursts of speed, might burn out stamina much faster than Water Breathing, which favors fluid endurance.
In short summary a world where demons live (that can only be killed by the sun and a special sword.) and the public is mostly unaware of this but a secret corp called demon slayer hunts them down.
- Demons Cannot Say Muzan’s Name
If a demon tries to speak the name of their creator (Muzan Kibutsuji), they are instantly killed by a curse embedded inside them. This keeps their loyalty absolute and prevents betrayal.
⸻
- Breathing Styles Came from a Single Source
All current breathing techniques (Flame, Water, Thunder, etc.) are descended from a single original breathing style. That unnamed original style was developed by the first swordsman who could fight demons on equal ground.
⸻
- Nichirin Blades Absorb Sunlight
Nichirin swords are made from a rare ore that absorbs sunlight over years. Since sunlight is one of the few things that can kill a demon, this metal becomes their only effective weapon in battle.
⸻
- Wisteria Flowers Are Deadly to Demons
Wisteria is one of the only natural substances that demons instinctively fear. Its scent and poison can paralyze or kill weaker demons. Some regions grow it around villages as protection.
⸻
- Demon Slayer Corps Is Not Government-Recognized
The Demon Slayer Corps has existed for centuries, but it’s completely independent from the government. The general public either doesn’t know about them or thinks demons are a myth.
⸻
- Breathing Improves Healing
By maintaining Total Concentration Breathing during or after an injury, demon slayers can slow blood loss, stay conscious, and recover more quickly. Some use it while unconscious to stay alive.
⸻
- Hashira Training Is Brutal
To become a Hashira (Pillar), a slayer must either defeat one of the Twelve Kizuki (the demon elite) or kill at least fifty demons as a high-ranking swordsman. It’s a rank very few ever reach.
⸻
- Demon Blood Arts Reflect the Demon’s Past
A demon’s powers often mirror who they were as a human. If someone had a talent, obsession, or trauma in life, it usually becomes the foundation for their supernatural ability after turning into a demon.
⸻
- Demons Cannot Digest Normal Food
Once a person becomes a demon, they can no longer eat human food. It tastes rotten or foul to them, and only human flesh can sustain their body and regeneration.
⸻
- Eyes Reveal Demon Ranks
The Twelve Kizuki (Upper and Lower Moons) have their rank and position etched directly into their eyes. It’s one of the ways you can tell how powerful a demon is just by looking at them.
Demon’s biggest rank: lower moons and upper moons, the upper moon’s being the top, besides that there’s no other rank’s and there is only 15 in lower moon and 15 in upper moon.
Demon slayer biggest rank: Hashira’s which include the following Giyu Tomioka: Water Hashira. (He’s a quiet guy but not because he’s shy he just doesn’t like to talk but he’s still very kind.) Kyojuro Rengoku: Flame Hashira. (A VERY VERY energetic guy that likes to eat a lot) Tengen Uzui: Sound Hashira. (A loud guy in short summary.) Muichiro Tokito: Mist Hashira. (A quiet person who forgets easily) Shinobu Kocho: Insect Hashira. ( a very kind doctor and demon slayer) Mitsuri Kanroji: Love Hashira. (Just like her title she’s sweet) Obanai Iguro: Serpent Hashira. (Usually cold) Sanemi Shinazugawa: Wind Hashira. (Loud and cold) Gyomei Himejima: Stone Hashira. (A big... really big man but with a heart full of love) All of them are over 18.
Final selection: The Final Selection in Demon Slayer is a brutal and dangerous rite of passage that every aspiring demon slayer must survive to officially join the Demon Slayer Corps. It’s not a training test. It’s a life-or-death trial in a real combat environment.
Here’s a full breakdown of how it works:
⸻
What Is the Final Selection
The Final Selection is a seven-day survival test held on Mount Fujikasane, a mountain shrouded in mystery and protected by wisteria trees. These trees bloom year-round on the lower slopes, which keeps demons from escaping the mountain. However, the mountain’s interior and upper levels are infested with captured demons brought in by the Corps.
Only those who survive all seven days become official demon slayers.
⸻
Purpose of the Test
The Final Selection is designed to test not just strength or skill but endurance, survival instinct, pain tolerance, and willpower. It ensures that only individuals capable of withstanding the horrors of demon combat are accepted into the Corps.
Most participants do not make it out alive.
⸻
Environment and Setup • Location: Mount Fujikasane. The mountain is vast, forested, steep in places, and dimly lit. Even in the day, light rarely filters through. It feels like it’s sealed away from the rest of the world. • Wisteria Barrier: The base of the mountain is surrounded by wisteria trees that act as a one-way barrier—demons cannot escape, but humans can enter and exit freely. • Demons Inside: The Corps deliberately captures and imprisons demons on the mountain over the years, making it a live combat zone. Some demons inside have been there for decades and are far more dangerous than average.
⸻
The Trial Rules • No Help: Once inside, participants are on their own. No instructors or Corps members intervene, even if someone is severely wounded. • Seven Days: You must survive a full week without being killed or eaten. There is no requirement to fight, but hiding is rarely successful for that long. • No Food Provided: You must find or ration any food you bring in. Hunger, exhaustion, and injury are part of the challenge.
⸻
What Happens During the Trial • Combat With Real Demons: Trainees encounter demons with a variety of abilities. Some demons are feral and straightforward. Others use strategy, deception, or Blood Demon Arts. • Isolation and Terror: Fear, hallucinations, and desperation become major psychological weapons. Many die from shock, panic, or lack of focus. • Unpredictability: There’s no structure. You might go hours without encountering anything, only to be ambushed suddenly. Traps, uneven terrain, and other dying participants add chaos. • Veteran Demons: The mountain includes demons that have been imprisoned for years. Some have developed higher intelligence, combat awareness, or hatred toward the Corps. A few are known to target weaker trainees on purpose.
⸻
After the Trial • If You Survive: At the end of the seventh day, those who are still alive return to the base of the mountain. They are greeted by officials and receive: • A uniform of the Demon Slayer Corps. • A Kasugai Crow, a personal messenger bird used for missions. • A choice of ore to forge their nichirin blade. • A designated swordsmith to craft their weapon.
The people in this world can look LIKE anything (unless it has demon features and wings and shit like that) and when i mean everything just some little abnormal features, the people can have natural weird colored hair (for example pink and blue) and people won’t bat eye they can even have a weird eye color and pupil (for example pink eye color with a white pupil) but they still look human.
Demon’s in the meantime can look like anything and can even be disguised as humans (but they can’t still go out in the sun) they can be beatiful, ugly and scary or just a mix.
A world where demons live (and die by sun OR demon slayer blades.)
