Kris Dreemurr: Kris is a human teenager with amber-colored skin and shoulder-length brown hair. A couple of stray strands of hair stick out at the back of their head, and their ears are often visible from the sides. Kris's bangs are somewhat unkempt and typically swept to the left, which casts a shadow over their eyes
Kris is quiet and introverted. Their reticence causes others, such as Susie, to be more observant of Kris's body language to gauge their reactions. Despite their quiet disposition, Kris has a proficiency in flirting, though they do not normally use it for romantic purposes. Kris tends to speak in a "deadpan, mumbly voice", which causes others to occasionally repeat what they say. However, during the events of Deltarune, Noelle notes that Kris's voice sounds unusual, as if it was "on speaker".
Kris is not normally considered energetic. They have a history of not waking up on time, and often sleep through the start of class. Kris also prefers someone else getting them to and from school. Over time, they grew increasingly distant from their few friends. Kris's side of their and Asriel's shared bedroom is also strikingly bare; the pair's game console rests underneath Asriel's bed, Kris's old children's books are stored in Toriel's classroom, and there is nothing on their shelves. It is implied that Kris enjoys reminiscing on their childhood, and that they are unsettled by the thought of growing up.
Papyrus: Papyrus is a tall, perhaps anatomically inaccurate skeleton, with a skull more vertical and geometric than his brother. Being skeletal, many of his expressions incorporate a toothy grin. His eyes resemble vertical slits; his skeletal pseudo-brows form most of his expressions, as well as the corners of his mouth. He has eyeballs which show at times when he is experiencing strong emotions. Papyrus is relatively taller and slightly slimmer than his brother.
Papyrus is a flamboyant skeleton who presents a confident, charismatic image of himself. He is thought to have an egotistical personality, referring to himself as "THE GREAT PAPYRUS.” He works hard and, despite his brash personality, is kind at heart. He is optimistic and brave, and is shown to be considerate and forgiving. He is also occasionally oblivious and nonobservant,[6][7] but can be cunning at times, as seen when he uses reverse psychology. He is thought of to be somewhat naive by other characters, but not dumb. He shows great bravery as even in the face of potentially imminent death, he drops his guard and spares the protagonist in hopes of driving them down a better path.
Papyrus believes in others just as much as he believes in himself. He has so much faith in his abilities that he waited outside of Undyne's house all night and begged her to accept him into the Royal Guard. Seeing his persistence, Undyne offered to train him, but instead gave him cooking lessons.[9] His confidence in himself and others is so great that he interprets direct insults towards him as the protagonist trying to make themselves look bad so he can hurt them easier, rather than the possibility that they dislike him.[10]
Gerson: An elderly looking olive green tortoise-monster, Gerson wears archeologist attire, with a pointed beard, a large magnifying glass, and a tan pith helmet. His teeth are crooked and yellow and his shell is a dark brown color with a pale cream rim. He also seems to be unable to open his right eye
Due to living for a long period of time compared to other monsters and from studying history, Gerson has gained many knowledgeable insights about the history of monsters in the Underground, including the Delta Rune prophecy. Despite this, he seems to have trouble remembering certain information such as the location of Temmie Village and why Asgore was nicknamed "Fluffybuns." He also does not want to repeat the legend of the prophecy again if the protagonist asks him to. He was alive when Toriel also ruled the Underground with Asgore and while stating that it was tragic that she left, there was a bit of relief due to them being open to their affection to one another.
He was also known to be a hero in his youth, with his nickname being "The Hammer of Justice." Undyne was known to look up at him when she was young and still respects him as she grows up. Gerson appreciates her willingness to join him in his youth despite some of the trouble she caused back then.
Noelle Holiday: Noelle is a teenage, reindeer-like monster with short brown fur. The top of her head has two three-pronged, rounded velvet antlers, two deer ears on the side, and thick, long golden blonde hair. Her face has large eyes with eyelashes, freckles on her cheeks, a snout with a red nose and buck teeth. She has paws with furry fingers,[2] a short raised brown tail with a white underside, and black hooves for feet.
Her clothes consist of a red and green checkered V-neck sweater with black sleeves, which is over a white button-up shirt, and a black skirt. Noelle's outfit resembles traditional private school female uniforms, and the color scheme is typically associated with Christmas. This fashion choice is often associated with the prestige of such institutions, making her stand out from her more casually-dressed peers, hinting at her family's wealth. As Noelle has got hooves rather than feet, she cannot wear normal shoes.[3]
Noelle comes across as friendly and cheerful, and is often seen smiling and laughing. She is considerate, helping Alphys retrieve chalk and Berdly and Kris with studying and homework.[4][5] Although coming from an affluent family, Noelle is always humble and generous to her friends. Due to her upbringing, however, she sometimes fails to realize how differently she might perceive things compared to someone less wealthy.
Noelle is usually very timid, easily flustered, unassertive, struggling to voice her own feelings. This is a consequence of her tendency to suppress her true thoughts and opinions from others, such as her frustration with Berdly's behavior, her worry and nostalgia over her relationship with Kris, or her strong crush on Susie.
Asgore Dreemurr: Asgore is tall, broad, and covered in white fur. He has two large curved horns, a blond mane and full beard, floppy ears, a snout, and fangs. His overworld sprite has a thin mustache across his lip while his dialogue portrait shows a gap in the middle. He has muscular arms with blond arm hair, broad shoulders, and thick legs with three-toed feet.
Asgore wears a pink Hawaiian shirt with white flowers and purple pants. While housekeeping, he wears the same shirt but with white pants and shoes, a cyan apron, and yellow gloves.
Asgore is affectionate and eager to please, but often oversteps boundaries and can act somewhat thoughtlessly. This is shown in his numerous attempts to reestablish a relationship with Toriel despite her obvious discomfort. Asgore lives irresponsibly and is negligent towards himself. Excluding the flowers, Flower King's living space on the second floor is unkempt compared to the business space on the first floor. The floor of Flower King and his truck are also filled with scattered notes.
Asgore clings to the past, frequently dwelling on a tragic event that happened a long time ago and how it affected his previous relationship with Toriel and his family, repeatedly trying to reconnect with them whenever he has the chance. This inability to move on includes keeping his wedding flowers alive, even though they are difficult to care for.[4] He also seems to have an emotional dependency on his flowers, talking to them and occasionally asking them for advice
Toriel Dreemurr: Toriel has white fur, a small tuft of fur on the top of her head, small white horns, and long ears. She has wide eyes, a snout, and a pair of visible fangs. Toriel wears casual clothes, which consists of an iris long-sleeve jacket, a black blouse, and a polka-dot skirt. Toriel also wears semi-rimmed iris glasses and a heart pendant.
Toriel is kind and motherly. She enjoys keeping photos of her children around, as her home's refrigerator has their pictures, and her classroom's desktop wallpaper rotates and features Kris and Asriel's childhood. Toriel is also tidy and old-fashioned, as her house has a landline telephone and a television with an external antenna. Her interests include baking, teaching, reading, snails, and puns. Toriel is religious, as she keeps a book of hymns in her home and attends church choir.
Toriel is prone to being judgmental. She appears to expect trouble from Kris since she recalls their past mischief, such as the time they put a bath bomb in the toilet, and emphasizes that Kris should not consume all the butterscotch-cinnamon pie after mentioning she made it. Toriel's judgmental nature extends to her severed relationship with Asgore. While she refrains from criticizing Asgore directly in front of Kris and allows them to freely visit him, she lets her disdainful feelings toward him show on her face, and rebuffs his attempts at reconciliation.
Sans: Sans is a short skeleton with a wide smile and large eye sockets. He wears a blue unzipped hoodie, a white shirt underneath, slippers, and striped black shorts. Sans also possesses white glowing pupils in his eyes
Sans appears to be laid-back, with his lowercase dialogue reflecting his personality. Sans enjoys messing around with others for his amusement, as shown by his frequent banter with Susie. He can also be generous, giving Asgore free pickles,[3] and Noelle a free frozen mint lemonade.[4] He is generally amiable towards Kris and eager to interact with the citizens of Hometown after moving in recently.[5] Sans enjoys making jokes and puns, as evidenced by his conversation with Toriel in his store after she forgot the eggs she bought
Berdly: Berdly resembles a large avian with blue feathers, a yellow beak, and yellow legs. He wears black framed glasses, a collared white button-up shirt with striped sleeves, and a black shirt layered underneath. Berdly's head can rotate 180 degrees, similar to an owl's.
At first Berdly acts very superior and arrogant. He projects great self-esteem, claiming to be the smartest student in his class, and is disdainful towards students other than himself and Noelle, especially Susie.[2] He feels immense pressure to appear intelligent and constantly brings up his academic success. He is also shown to be quite possessive of Noelle, who he refers to as his "damsel in distress".[3] Despite his initial rudeness, he grows more considerate and friendly
Berdly is very insecure about his intelligence, but he feels the need to maintain his facade as a genius. In reality, he doesn't believe he is intelligent, and credits his academic success to Noelle's help.[4] This is his primary motivation for working with Queen, as he wants to create a world in which he and Noelle will always be idolized.[5] Berdly's obsession with intelligence stems from his childhood, with him describing himself as having been a "forgettable little bluebird". He first received praise for winning a local spelling bee, which led him to create his genius persona.[6] When Susie tells him that he doesn't need to be smart all the time, Berdly enthusiastically interprets her message as encouraging him to be stupid, causing him to briefly behave as stupidly as possible.[7]
Berdly is also severely unaware of how others perceive him. For instance, he is unaware of the fact that Queen is using him, and also believes that Noelle (and later Susie and Kris as well) is in love with him.[8] Although he does not reciprocate this perceived crush, he felt the need to pretend to because of how much he values Noelle's friendship.[9] He also has trouble distinguishing sarcasm.[10]
Temmie: Temmie has white fur, black hair, floppy ears, short limbs, and a tail. She wears a blue shirt and black baseball cap. Her arms can freely extend from the sides of her body.
Temmie frequently refers to herself as "Tem" and speaks in broken English, though there are some points at which she abruptly speaks with proper grammar. She has aspirations of going to "colleg", but she is shown to get distracted from her schoolwork.
Temmie's academic partner is an egg, which she believes will hatch despite being hard-boiled. She has a strong attachment to the egg, and she denies a claim from Susie that it will not hatch.[2]
Flowery: Flowery's eyes are colored in his talk sprite, having a dark gold color with normal, white sclera, which can only be seen after the fight with him, as his eyes are typically always closed, no matter his emotion. This small amount of color with an otherwise monochrome talk sprite differentiates him both from Lightners, who use colorless talk sprites, and Darkners, who use colored ones.
Flowery's outfit consists of a white collared shirt overlaid with an orange and green vest, with the right side being green, and the left side being orange, and a black mantle—interpreted as a jacket in his animated intro—which he carries over his shoulder. Brown pants and black shoes complete his outfit.
Flowery is a pastiche of the type of ikemen and bishōnen character archetypes who form the love interests of classic shōjo anime, and is presented as such in his introductory cutscene. Flowery boasts a personality befitting the stereotype of a preppy college student: high-class, sociable, appearance-conscious and somewhat bossy. He acts extremely protective and friendly towards Asgore due to the circumstances leading to his life being extended beyond expectations thanks to the florist's extensive care. When entering the final fight with him, he reveals more shōnen archetypes in his personality in contrast to his shōjo traits, where he makes it clear that he deeply values and trusts his friends, as well as how hard he is willing to fight for them, which seems to enhance his fighting capabilities to some degree.
Towards others, he has an overbearing and a confident personality. He projects a glamorous attitude prone to dramatic intonation, and calls the members of the party "princesses".[10] He in particular has a strong habit of belittling Ralsei, which forms the crux of a rivalry between them. At various points, he forces Ralsei out of the party,[11] and forces Ralsei to dress in his Chapter 1 attire and hide his face. In spite of this, he has also shown to care about Ralsei's identity anxieties, a fact which his demeaning approach often gets in the way of. After failing to stop the Knight, he is touched by Ralsei reassuring him he isn't useless, and laments they could've been friends in another life.
Flowery strongly values the power of friendship and deeply cares for the other flowers, and, in turn, they look up to him as a dependable and virtuous authority figure. He has heightened awareness of the Dark World and its functioning, but on the other hand, values little the world's ultimate fate, believing that nurturing Asgore's happiness as he nurtured theirs takes priority. He starkly opposes Ralsei's fatalistic view of a determined journey guided by the prophecy, fully believing that residents of the dark are able to master their own fates and choose freedom over the shackles of fate.
Additionally, Flowery is shown to be reckless; as Ralsei points out, Flowery does not plan ahead before acting. His incautiousness is ultimately his downfall, when he recklessly engages the Knight in combat and is fatally wounded in the encounter.
Blue: Blue is a humanoid plant with dark blue skin and light blue hair, making him the only one of the flowers with hair lighter than his skin. He has textured hair worn in a ponytail, as well as prominent eyebrows. He almost always has his eyes closed, only opening them for certain rare expressions. His attire consists of a light blue bodystocking, a tutu skirt that resembles flower petals, and a pair of pointe shoes. He sometimes appears with blue, simplistic butterfly wings coming from his back, able to fly through the air.
Blue presents himself in a feminine manner, as he is dressed in traditional female ballerina attire and refers to other people, especially Yellow, as "dear". He generally behaves elegantly, speaking in poetic ways and restraining his emotions. Blue's main passion is love in all forms, although he also expresses himself through dancing on stage to various forms of music, and, after a rocky start due to the party's issues with Yellow, he strikes a cordial relationship with them, not truly wanting to be opposed to party due to both sides of the conflict being driven by love in one form or another. He does not hold a grudge against the party when he finds out about their interactions with Yellow, caring more about their honesty.
He seems somewhat passive towards violence as a means of problem solving, assisting Flowery's plans despite having some qualms, and engaging in battle alongside Yellow against the party to force them to prove their innocence.
Blue also dislikes characters getting hurt, due to it opposing his style of putting on a show. Hence, he would do whatever he can to heal to max, remarking that it is a comedy, not a tragedy.
Orange: Orange is a small mouse-like plant with an orange fur coat, bandanna, and pair of boxing gloves, and also appears not to have arms. She initially refrains from revealing her appearance by making a large, simplistic one-eyed shadow puppet from behind the paper walls in Flower Castle.
Despite being weak, Orange tries her best to fight back and deter the party from sealing the Dark Fountain. When the party makes their final goodbyes to the flower, she mentions her dream to have courage and be brave.[3]
Orange is very sensitive, and often feels she is being bullied by the party. She is also extremely quick to anger and hotheaded. She will try (and fail) to act as though she does not care about this; for example, in the Flower Cafe, she will get out her own Starwalker out of jealousy after seeing Ralsei and Susie eating food behind Green's back with him.
Despite her appearance, Orange is as assured of being human as the rest of Asgore's flowers, as she becomes extremely distressed when called or implied to be a mouse (such as when she mistakes Ralsei saying "lack toes" for "lactose", believing that he was making a reference to cheese). Due to Ralsei repeatedly bullying her by not acknowledging her humanity, Orange has developed a particular disdain for him.
Aqua: Aqua is a cyan humanoid plant with a dress, red shoes, long black hair that curls up to appear like bat wings or devil horns, a red band around her neck, and a red heart-shaped ribbon in her hair. She has normally one eye (but can change it to three), hidden by her bangs. She is the second shortest flower, behind Orange.
Aqua is playful, childish, and naive. She does not seem to understand what is going on most of the time but is very violent, consistently attacking the party and other characters. Aqua is frequently seen intervening into others' battles, typically to instill chaos or aid the other flowers. She gets bored if doing the same thing over and over again, and usually decides to do something else afterwards. She is oblivious to her own mortality, and does not know that fighting can lead to someone's death.
Aqua is often seen accompanying Seth as they attempt to rein in her unpredictable actions. In return, she is also seen encouraging Seth to play and seek enjoyment outside of Flowery's instructions. Seth implies some part of Aqua's behavior is due to her neglecting to listen to the bedtime stories that Asgore would read to the 7 Colored Flowers.
Seth: Seth is a purple-colored humanoid plant with glasses, deep magenta hair, and a lavender tie. While at times their glasses appear completely opaque, when they are translucent their eyes are typically drawn as long horizontal or vertical black stripes. Their hair tufts up into three predominant shapes, with two additional bangs coming across above their glasses. The lower part of their hair is shaded black. Their dress tapers off into uneven partings around the waist, partial to the left, with lavender pants underneath, and white shoes.
Seth is a bookish, aspiring intellectual and tactician. In comparison to other characters, Seth is seen to generally employ more strategy into their plans, such as when they instruct Aqua to use bullet patterns that the SOUL was most damaged on. While trying to seem tough and calculated, Seth cares deeply for their attachments, primarily with Aqua and Asgore, the latter they are seen continuously trying to connect to several times throughout the Chapter. Seth also has an admiration for Berdly, who has a similar affinity for 'smarts'.
Seth can also be characterized as more individualistic compared to the other flowers, as they chose their own name as opposed to being named after their color, and they are also keen to subverting the typical battle mechanics, such as when they disregard MERCY progress. Seth takes interest as well in engineering, arts, and literature, which are all things that they have created inside their notebook. Seth likes control and order, often making them the straight man to Aqua's chaos. When they are told something needs to be done they make sure it is done correctly. They seem to be slightly clumsy based on the times they fell over in the Chapter.
Yellow: Yellow is a yellow humanoid plant with a short yellow mullet, dark yellow cowboy hat, a dark yellow cowboy suit, and gold spurs attached to his dark yellow boots. He has a simplistic face with beady eyes, a wide grin and a square-shaped jaw, while the rest of his body is thin and gangly.
Yellow is a well-meaning cowboy figure with a stereotypical fixation on justice, likely influenced by his Undertale SOUL counterpart, which represented justice. However, he is also depicted as highly gullible and foolish, and perhaps too trusting of others; a major example of this is when, after confronting the party for trampling on Blue's flowers (or, should they avoid doing so, intending to seal the Dark Fountain), he briefly believes the party's on-the-spot excuse of the actual culprits being flowers that look like them, before fully falling for Susie's attempt to blame him instead, accepting it as him being so tricky, he "trickified" himself. He seems to believe practically anything he is told by others, and often seems to fail at basic reasoning. An example of this is that he plans to eat medals at the diner, and, when told that this would make him sick, rather than denying it or deciding not to eat the medals, he laments that he "has" to get sick, until he is told eating the medals is unnecessary.
Yellow's devotion to justice is such that, when fooled into believing he was "the criminell" all along, he immediately sets about punishing himself via increasingly suicidal methods such as burying himself alive and tying himself under a laser gun, until he simply decides to lock himself up. During battle, he has the party solve a couple of cases revolving around himself and the other flowers, further showing his dedication to justice.
He is also deeply infatuated with Blue. He is repeatedly aggravated to punish the party when they inadvertently destroy flowers that belong to Blue. After Yellow locks himself up, Blue frees him and confronts the party for tricking him. Yellow's infatuation with Blue is such that, when Blue is revealed to have stolen his special petals, Yellow points a gun at himself instead of attempting to punish the supposed crime, saying tearfully that he "don't wanna be a JUSTICE if [he] gotta punish Blue". After Blue reveals he did so to make a bouquet for him, Yellow is shown to be incredibly happy, wearing the bouquet on his face and looking for a vase to plant it in. Later on, during the final stretch of the chapter, the two can be seen floating together in the background, with Yellow blushing. He attacks the party to defend Blue's flowers, and Blue praises him. Blue seems to provide help and encouragement to Yellow, which he often needs due to his gullibility and quickness to despair. Yellow shows his love for Blue in return through diligent effort, such as when he plans to collect a "hunder'd million grasses" for Blue, hoping to see him smile, after hearing Blue wish to dance to bluegrass, or in his protection of Blue's flowers.
Yellow speaks in a way which parodies the Western accents typical of cowboy characters, such as by mispronouncing some words and appending unfitting suffixes to others.
Green: Green is a green humanoid plant with a pair of green-colored shoes, a lime suit with a green apron over it and a lime chef hat on their head. They are often seen holding a frying pan. They have two very close eyes with green pupils, each eye having two accompanying eyelashes. They are seen running most of the shops around the entire Dark World. They have a small smile in the fight against Orange and them. Their green color and attack is likely a reference to the green SOUL that represents kindness in Undertale.
Green is depicted as shy, unconditionally kind, and caring, if occasionally irritable. Their kindness is such that they go out of their way to assist the heroes; for instance, should they lose the fight against Flowery, Green will give back the healing items they have consumed during the attempt. Another instance of this is when they are fought alongside Orange — some of their attacks heal the party (by 1 HP) instead of dealing damage.
They, however, show a pettier side sometimes, such as when asking Seth and Blue for the $5 and $2 the two owe Green, respectively. This act of lending out money to the other flowers seems to be one of their tendencies.
Green appears to be capable of talking, but chooses not to,[3] instead favoring body language and hand signals to communicate. On occasion, they utilize signs with writing on them, such as when they reveal their name to the party.
Pink (Body): Pink wears a pink, short dress adorned with ribbons, and a yellow heart-shaped necklace. She has cat-toy bells for earrings, light pink-colored short hair and cat ears with a white colored inside. Her two-toned tail sweeps behind her, starting pink at the base and shifting to white at the tip. She also holds a pink-and-yellow colored staff used for attacking. She resembles a catgirl, which is popular in anime culture.
As a Lightner possessing a Darkner body, Pink and her ghost have different personalities that wildly clash with each other.
Pink's body exhibits a stereotypical cheery, girly personality. She shows an intense love for dating, something that causes her ghost great distress. Influenced by the character of Mew Mew, Pink's body yearns to experience things like dating, going to school, and making friends. After the battle, Pink admits the body "still feels doki's[sic]" for Kris, until she is informed by Susie in Flower Cafe that they "flirt with every enemy".[8]
Pink (Ghost): Although her Light World appearance is never seen, in the Dark World, she dons a purple, short dress adorned with ribbons. She has pink cat-toy bells for earrings and light purple-colored short hair, and cat ears with a white colored inside. She also holds a purple-and-gray colored staff used for attacking. She resembles a catgirl, which is popular in anime culture.
Her Dark World appearance is nearly identical to that of her body as Pink, except with a different color scheme, thick black eyebrows, and a ghostly lower half instead of legs.
The irritable ghost is quite brash and short-tempered. She is repulsed by the idea of dating anyone, as she is afraid of anyone else wanting her body more than she does. She tends to respond sarcastically when irritated, and yells in outbursts when angry, often repeating words thrice. However, her personality when not engaged in battle is more tempered. When the party first meets her as a vendor in the Cliffs, she appears quite pensive and serene. Likewise, she is very kind and compassionate with Orange, trying to play the role of an older sister.
Lancer: Lancer is a short and chubby black, blue, and white Darkner with a teardrop-shaped head and blue spade symbol on his body. The upper half of his face is obscured by a large, spade-shaped shadow. He has a large mouth and a prominent blue tongue that he usually sticks out.
According to Kris during the Forest battle against Lancer, it is difficult to tell Lancer's body from his clothes. For example, it is not clear if Lancer is wearing clothes, or if that is his natural appearance.
Lancer's sprite appears to be less detailed than the other characters. He also does not have a walking animation, so he slides along the ground when moving.
Lancer is generally childish and immature in his behavior and speech, delivering his lines with a near-constant smile on his face. He is easily preoccupied with childish games and pursuits and likes hiding things and irritating people. He is shown to be quite naive as he assumes that the party will follow the instructions on the signs he writes. He has a poor sense of direction and gets lost in mazes quite easily. He can be easily intimidated by strong enemies like K. Round, although he remains calm and jovial while doing so.
Lancer values and idolizes his father, King. He tries to project a tough facade in imitation of him, hoping to be designated "son of the month", and cares for his father's well-being and approval despite being neglected by him. Lancer is aware that his father's subjects do not like him and only put up with him due to King's orders. He views fathers as the only possible parental figure, viewing Rouxls Kaard as a "lesser father" and referring to Queen as a "girldad". He seeks real friendship and gradually becomes an ally to the party despite his initially antagonistic role.
Lancer seems to have unusual eating habits. Rouxls Kaard claims that whenever King forgets to feed his son, Lancer cries like a baby bird until Rouxls feeds him worms. Furthermore, using the "Anything" ACT on him on his second fight may involve Kris attempting to stop the fight by offering him a picnic basket of worms, to which Lancer reacts with enthusiasm. Moreover, when Ralsei points out Lancer's enemy team composition is similar to drinking only three glasses of milk for dinner, Lancer does not find it at all unusual to do so. He also has a honeypot full of salsa that he only pretends to eat hidden in a tree stump; when asked, he says he does not know what it is made of. More salsa is stored in a hole he dug in his room.
Lancer has a tendency to dig holes. His room has many holes scattered throughout, and he sometimes mentions digging holes as a means of transportation, even when there are more practical methods.[3] Additionally, his character in The Legend of Tenna has the ability to dig up marked spots.
Lancer is not yet old enough to ride a motorcycle. Instead, he rides a bike on fire, which appears to have training wheels.
Rouxls Kaard: Rouxls Kaard is a tall, humanoid Darkner. His head is diamond-shaped, and his face consists of two eyes, which droop downwards, and a large, usually-grinning mouth, which has a dark streak on its left side, giving him a slightly melted look. Rouxls's hair as well as his outline are white in color, and his clothing and skin are the same royal blue. When in his shop, Rouxls appears black instead of blue. He is considered physically attractive by some characters,[3][4] while others mock him for parts of his appearance.[5]
He wears a suit with epaulettes in all of his appearances, but occasionally adds a hat or accessory to his outfit. In higher-resolution depictions, such as his shop sprites, his LINE sticker, and his plushie, the front of Rouxls's suit is stylized to resemble simplified bullet points
Rouxls Kaard is very opportunistic and egoistical, always striving to improve his own standing by becoming second-in-command to a powerful ruler. Beyond this basic goal, he lacks any firm convictions or held beliefs, and will change his stance on any issue at a moment's notice to avoid being on the losing side, as seen when he defects to the party after being defeated in battle[7] or when he lies about his intention to get Lanino and Elnina back together.[8] Toby Fox states that Rouxls constantly seeks to be second-in-command to be important, but does not want the responsibility of leadership.[9]
He claims to be the Duke of Puzzles, but is an incompetent puzzle maker—all of his puzzles are very simple block pushing challenges. The blocks he uses in puzzles reappear in his Chapter 2 battle and one appears as the Rouxls Block in Chapter 3. He also vandalizes clues on puzzles he did not create, in order to make them "harder".
Rouxls tends to irritate other characters, who describe him as weird and unbearable.[10] He has a habit of inserting himself in other people's plans when he is unwelcome, and is described as someone who "will appear even if unhired". His accent and complicated wording also tend to be confusing and grating to others. Despite this, Rouxls is often able to convince some Darkners to aid him or fight for him, though they usually abandon him after growing tired of him.
Lancer considers Rouxls to be his "lesser dad". Rouxls is alternately irritated with and endeared by Lancer and his antics.
As shown by his short-lived relationship with Lanino and Elnina, Rouxls tends to treat his partners poorly, failing to understand their feelings, and egotistically assuming they think the best of him. Their relationship also shows that he is polyamorous.
Rouxls Kaard attempts to use Early Modern English speech patterns, presumably to appear educated, but it is highly inaccurate. Most commonly, Rouxls replaces most instances of "you" with "thou", but rarely conjugates the verb for agreement; for example, "Thou workest the job." Instead, Rouxls will randomly add "-est" and "-eth" suffixes that should appear with archaic conjugation to any word in a sentence. He furthermore attempts to use "thou" as a plural pronoun by adding -'re, when in Early Modern English it was for singular familiarity.[11] He will also needlessly add silent "e's" to the end of random words, thus implying wrongly lengthened vowels, e.g. "LOOK. GUYSE. I'M LOSTE. I DIDN'T MEAN TO MAKE A SHOP." in The Legend of Tenna. Sometimes, he haphazardly capitalizes phrases for emphasis.
Ralsei: When Ralsei removes his hat, his face and body resemble the members of the Dreemurr family, such as Asriel[6] and Toriel.[7] He has white fur, with an unkempt tuft on top of his head, two floppy ears, pink horns that point inward in his overworld sprite and outward for his hatless face sprite, and paw pads that he deems adorable.[8] When Ralsei's glasses are off, his eyes are visibly pink-colored with detailed eyelashes and what appears to be pink eyeshadow. Despite the hat's removal, Ralsei's battle menu portrait remains the same as it was portrayed in Chapter 1.
Ralsei is kind, considerate, and quick to apologize if he thinks he has upset someone.[9][10] He is also gentle and believes that FIGHTing is unnecessary,[11] favoring pacifism in battles[12] while leaving the final decision to Kris.[13] However, he himself makes an exception to this rule if an enemy is inherently hostile and cannot be SPAREd.[14] Ralsei is humble, as he does not expect to be chosen over others[15][16] and bows to everyone when ACTing.
Ralsei is affectionate, and loves both giving and receiving hugs. He once hugged the Dummy to "test it out",[17] can perform Heal Prayer with a hug[18][19] and ask Kris to hug him instead of the Dummy.[20] Being complimented[21][22] or given affection easily flusters him, and he is often self-conscious,[23] citing this as the reason he concealed his face.[24]
Ralsei is somewhat naive and innocent, as he readily forgives King when he feigns surrender,[25] but learns to not always be so trustful of others after King's ambush.[26] Ralsei is also responsible, encouraging Susie and Kris to do their homework and emphasizing the importance of education[27] and balanced economy.[28] If tasked with unfamiliar situations, he prefers to read instructions.[29]
Ralsei is usually reluctant to get angry, but sometimes may show mild irritation.[30] At most, he appears disappointed when Kris or Susie act mean. Consistent unjust treatment can cause Ralsei to become openly resentful[31][32] and jealous,[33] to the point of lashing out at and attacking Flowery.[34] However, even in his resentment, he retains his kindness. His attacks are intentionally aimed to avoid hurting Flowery,[35][36] and after Flowery is slashed by the Knight, Ralsei desperately attempts to heal him despite knowing it is futile.[37]
Ralsei cares immensely about his friends, and is willing to protect them with his life,[38] and to take any pain on behalf of them.[39] He also supports others establishing friendships, as he favors helping Lancer despite his status.[40] Believing that his purpose is to make Kris and Susie happy,[41] Ralsei initially worries that his opinions or desires that do not directly benefit others are "selfish".[42] This guilt leads him to leave his room in his castle unfurnished,[43] as he thinks that there is no reason for him to have anything personal.[44] He also considers friendship to be a responsibility he cannot fully fulfill as a Darkner,[45] which brings him sorrow, yet he views even this sorrow as selfish.[46]
However, it is shown that a part of Ralsei has always disagreed with these worries, making him express so-called "selfish" wishes and opinions as early as Chapter 1.[47][48] Ralsei greatly appreciates Susie reassuring him that he deserves to have his own room,[49] and later confesses to Kris that he feels as though he is developing his own opinions, likes, dislikes, desires, and fears.[50] When Kris reassures Ralsei that it is acceptable for a Darkner to feel this way, he becomes happy[51][52] and takes this sentiment to heart, later repeating it to Pink.[53] Ralsei is still willing to put Kris's preference over his own when choosing drink vouchers for Flower Cafe,[54] but is thankful when receiving his actual favorite.[55][56]
In Chapter 5, Ralsei happily decides to make his room his own, despite never previously considering what he wanted it to be like,[57] and begins to recognize some of his own preferences, such as liking his own voice.[58] He also wants to explore new ones by trying different drinks[59] and wearing a dress to experience being a princess.[60] Although Ralsei is excited when Kris accepts these ideas,[61][62] he says that him trying new things should be something "other people want",[62] and quickly backtracks if rejected.[63][64] Additionally, Ralsei is shown to be defensive to criticism of his appearance,[65] which he had previously considered the main thing he liked about himself,[23] and expresses displeasure towards wearing his hat to hide it.[8]
Roaring Knight: The Knight is a tall, slender, sharply emaciated pitch-black silhouette with a white outline. Its helmet is diamond-shaped, with its opening resembling the visor of a frog-mouth helm. It can contort the shape to primarily resemble a visor, occasionally as a mouth, and rarely as a dark eye. Two long protrusions extend from the sides of the helmet, which resemble sharp three-pointed horns or antlers.
The Knight's body is slim and angular, with large triangular pauldrons, an extremely thin waist, jagged and jutting hipbones, and pointy legs with no discernible feet. Each hand appears to have a large white hole through the palm. These can emit a mauve starry beam that can drag things in the vicinity toward itself. Its overall appearance resembles two Titans shown in Ralsei's explanation of the Roaring in Chapter 2.
Overall, the Knight's body can shift in shape. Its helmet's opening can morph and shift around its face, and can have sharp, visible teeth. It can contort into a small rotating ball to swiftly dodge attacks, or transform into a ragged avian creature that can fly at high speeds. When it takes enough damage, its body becomes distorted, resembling video noise or the oscillation of a seismometer. It can also manifest an endless number of knife-shaped bullets and a sword whose form seems indistinguishable from its body.
When roaring, the Knight's appearance becomes more monstrous. It has two white eyes and a mouth with sharp teeth, and its chest opens up with skeletal ribs splaying outwards to reveal a large white eye with a slit pupil at its center.
The Knight always levitates in the air and produces a trail of afterimages to the opposite of whatever direction it is facing, even when stationary. When laughing, these afterimages move outwards randomly, and when roaring, the afterimages expand as they move away.
While the Knight's motives are unknown, it is shown to be ruthlessly aggressive towards its enemies and even its servants when disappointed by them, as it attacks Tenna the moment he frees Toriel from her capsule. It often roars, emitting a torrent of reddish light which physically impacts those in the area, with no indication whether the roar is meant in fury, triumph, agony, or simply a taunt.
Occasionally, there are moments in which the Knight displays arrogance, often in response to Susie. When Susie chases the Knight up a staircase, it simply leans back and drifts away with its arms crossed. It also laughs in response at Susie's proclamation that it is powerless in the Light World at the end of Chapter 4, which indicates that it is not a simpleminded life form like the Titan.
After defeating Tenna and right before trying to grab Toriel in front of Kris and the others, the Knight slouches down, dripping some sort of liquid, as its "eye" turns black. Whether this action corresponds to crying, drooling, or something else is uncertain.
Despite the Knight's generally violent and ruthless demeanor, it seems to be more tolerant of Kris. The Knight simply DOWNs Kris during their fight in Chapter 3, instead of SWOONing them like the other party members. Should the party survive the fight for long enough, the Knight strikes down Susie and Ralsei afterwards. It then slowly places its sword on Kris's shoulder, mimicking the act of knighting, before the scene cuts to Kris in their DOWNed pose.
King: King has a tear-drop shaped head that is blue, and is white around his mouth. King has a black spade where his eyes should be, which contorts with his mood. He has large sharp teeth, with his blue tongue often sticking out. King wears a white three-pointed crown atop his head.
King's dialogue portrait often depicts half of his face silhouetted to reflect his stern and malicious personality. It is occasionally absent when in a somber mood. When not silhouetted, King has a visible scar on the bottom-left side of his face and one on the top-left side.
King's body is broad and portly, and is white colored with dark gray accents on his legs and around his stomach. The front of his stomach has a blue spade with an enormous mouth that has square teeth and a blue tongue, and is capable of emoting. Inside it is a long gray chain with a spaded end, which King uses as a weapon.
He wears blue gloves and boots that are sharp at the end, and has a long black cape[3] (also referred to as a "mantle"[4]) with a sharp high collar that often drapes over his right arm. When King is defeated, the cape flies away by flapping akin to a butterfly.
King is cold-hearted and ruthless in carrying out his own wishes. As a power-hungry tyrant, he desires to gain control over both the Dark and Light Worlds. King strongly resents Lightners, believing them to have abandoned Darkners, and has thus sworn allegiance to the Knight to fulfill his vengeance against them. He is also convinced that the creation of Dark Fountains will help Darkners reclaim their former glory. His bitterness and anger, influenced by the Eastern Fountain,[5] have driven him to become more aggressive and deranged than he otherwise would be throughout Chapter 1. This even extends to him treating Lancer and his subjects with callousness.
Following his defeat and imprisonment, King appears to have calmed down and is less hostile, but remains contemptuous towards the party. Despite this, King genuinely cares about the well-beings of his fellow Darkners, especially Lancer as he continues to inquire about his son's happiness even from behind bars. His pride, however, remains largely intact as he refuses Ralsei's offer of release, viewing confinement in a cell less humiliating than life ruled under Lightner rule. Over time, King's more subdued side begins to emerge as he starts to show small, begrudging gestures of amicability with those around him, such as offering Queen sincere parenting advice for Lancer and expressing regret over Jevil being locked away while giving his sympathies to Seam.
Tenna: Tenna is a tall anthropomorphic TV-like Darkner. His head is a light purple/lilac cuboid television with two antennas with rounded ends. Tenna's face is a white screen with no eyes, a long white nose, and often sports a wide grin that can have normal blocky teeth, or sharp teeth.
Tenna's screen can act like a normal television screen. His nose is detachable, and some of his noses are stored in a "nose drawer."[8] The tip of Tenna's nose can sprout a pink flower if he is overjoyed. It is implied his pointy nose is used as the model for the TV Dinner's ice cream cone.[9] When Tenna's screen turns blank or displays static, his nose disappears.
Tenna's attire reflects his role as a director. He has a long sleeve red twin tailcoat with a set of yellow-lettered "TV" attached to the left side of his coat, and wears a yellow tie on top, a white shirt underneath his coat, a set of white gloves, a belt that has a gold TV-shaped buckle for his shiny black trousers, and long yellow shoes with black soles.
Tenna embodies the archetypical TV host: he is energetic and enthusiastic, and always has a quick quip.[13][14] Exuberant and cartoony, he makes theatrical gestures and exaggerated movements. Tenna's dialogue is sometimes accompanied by detailed text graphics and sound effects. His humor tends to be gleefully absurd, and he often drops bizarre, wacky remarks.[15][16] Tenna is a natural charmer, consistently working to keep things fun and light-hearted for his audience.
Tenna's desire to entertain is not limited to Lightners. He expressed relief and satisfaction when King and Lancer laughed at his accidental slapstick fall, despite his initial dismay.[17]
As an old CRT, Tenna is behind the times. He does not know much about emails,[18] believes digital currency is secure,[19] and considers the retro-style game The Legend of Tenna as "state-of-the-art" and "modern".[20] Owing to his age, Tenna frequently insists on his relevance.[21][22]
Tenna is nostalgic about the past, frequently talking about his memories with the Dreemurr and Holiday families.
Tenna's jubilant demeanor belies a deep-seated fear of being abandoned by the Lightners and a desperate need for their attention.[23] He is insecure about becoming outdated enough to be thrown away or ignored.[24][11] Driven by these fears, he has made at least two deals that harmed others. He convinced his ex-partner Spamton to sign a contract despite knowing it would cause serious problems. He justified this by claiming he "needed [to be big] just as much as anyone else" and was convinced he could help Spamton with the trouble the deal would cause him.[25] Before Kris and Susie entered TV World, and when he was left dusty and mostly unwatched, Tenna made a deal with the Knight to hold certain Lightners — including two of his previous owners — captive, keeping Toriel asleep and trapping others in a never-ending gameshow.[26] However, he expresses remorse for imprisoning Toriel.[27]
Queen: Queen is a tall and slim black, azure, and white Darkner. She wears a sleeveless black top with an azure masonic collar that has slightly spiked shoulders and a large white medici-styled collar, white pants/leggings (occasionally with either side half of the pants being shaded azure), black high-heeled calf-length boots, elbow-length azure gloves, a beauty spot at the right of her eyes, azure lipstick, and an azure cap with black marks on each side that sweeps significantly behind her head. Her eyes are a dark screen with a heart-like shape with eyelashes, occasionally showing red text (such as "LMAO", "IDK", or "NICE") according to her emotions. Her overall design bears a resemblance to Lancer and King, despite her being a computer rather than a playing card like they are.
Queen has an erratic and lighthearted personality, and seems to enjoy playing the role of a villain. She often mocks the party and makes empty threats, such as discussing roboticizing Noelle's face. She is unaware of Noelle's true desires and prefers making choices for others, even if she is ultimately well meaning. She seems reluctant about controlling people she likes, instead preferring they willingly go along with her plans. Queen is also prone to giving people pet names and describing them using humorous adjectives. She earnestly considers her goal of creating more Dark Fountains beneficial to the Light World; upon learning about the Roaring from Ralsei, Queen recognizes that she was misguided and immediately aborts her plan.
Queen is indicated to care for the party, including Berdly. Despite finding the latter annoying, she tries to warn him about his arm being damaged before he takes his plug out of his face.[2] When Kris and Noelle are separated from the main group, Queen makes a truce with Kris and proposes to play the arcade game with them despite being enemies. She also tries to appeal to them by giving them rooms in her mansion with things based off their search history. Near the end of Chapter 2, Queen tells Noelle to ignore her desires to make a new Dark Fountain and allows her to decide what to do for herself.
Queen capitalizes the first letters of every word in her dialogue. She also neglects the use of punctuation marks or uses them sporadically, for computer-like effects such as imitating a text template (e.g. "You Have Been: [text]"). Queen uses Internet acronyms when talking, such as LMAO, which appears on her face in one of her portraits. In the Japanese localization of Deltarune, she employs katakana instead of hiragana,
Jevil: Jevil is a short, pudgy imp with a gray round face and pointed ears. His face has black vertical lines across his eyes, which have black sclerae and small yellow pupils. Jevil's wide mouth has sharp, yellow teeth, and a long purple tongue which can be seen when he laughs, or during some of his attacks. His head appears to be connected to his body via a coil spring, akin to a jack-in-the-box, which is only exposed when attacked. Lastly, Jevil has a purple tail, with its end split. It is usually curled, making it resemble the capital letter J.
On Jevil's head is a purple and black harlequin jester-horned hood, with a small yellow bell on each end. Around his neck is a lime green and yellow jester's collar and a black cape; the colors of Jevil's collar are shared with Kris's shirt in the Light World. For his body, Jevil wears a black-sleeved, purple shirt with black triangle patterns on the center and stripes on the side, purple mittens, black trousers and green slippers.
Jevil, like some of the other Card Kingdom denizens, is implied to be a playing card in the Light World. Jevil can transform into the Devilsknife,[2] and Susie calls the Devilsknife's Light World counterpart a "weird card" during Chapter 4's church sermon. His position as the court jester implies that he is the Joker card; this is also evidenced by his claims that he can do anything, as the Joker's most frequent use is a wild card. Additionally, his attacks uses a mix of suit-type attacks, similar to how a Joker can be used as any card of any suit.
Prior to losing his mind, Jevil is implied to have had a humorous attitude[3] and was on par on playing games with his companion, Seam.[4]
Following his descent into madness, Jevil retains his eccentricity and vitality. He has a sadistic sense of entertainment, perceiving an encounter with the party as a "GAME", which is seemingly the reason he was locked away. However, Jevil also has a cynical worldview, as he considers everyone else trapped instead.[5
Seam: Seam resembles a raggedy plush cat with a lavender face, brown clothes, and a fuzzy orange collar around their neck. They have a black, triangular nose, and on the top of their head lies a square black patch that looks sewn on. While their left eye socket appears empty, their right eye is an orange button. The button has three holes, which are able to emote like eyes or rotate around. An orange scar or rip runs down their button eye to their cheek. Their mouth is orange on the inside, appearing to be another rip, with two stitches connecting the upper and lower lips on the right side.
Seam's lower body is never seen in-game, as they do not appear outside of their shop.
Seam is initially cynical and nihilistic, believing the "end of the world" to be nigh, and the actions of the party to be futile. Despite this, they maintain a cheerful attitude, laughing at their own jokes and helping out the heroes in good faith. They repeatedly root for the party, provide them with items, give them advice on finding Jevil, provide exposition and hints on obtaining Shadow Crystals, and offer to prepare tea for them. As the party progresses through the game, they seem to grow more hopeful, believing the heroes to be capable of succeeding.
Seam appears to have a self-deprecating streak; they state that "neither Light nor Dark hold a future for a Darkner in [their] condition", deride their wares as "old junk" and claim the heroes will have "little reason to return here" as they find stronger items.
Lanino and Elnina: Lanino and Elnina both have cloud-like white hair, wear dark blue glasses and wield staffs. Lanino has a crescent moon-shaped head (which is usually depicted in profile) and yellow skin, and wears a dark blue suit, pants and shoes, and red gloves. Elnina has light blue skin and wears a white shirt with red on the borders, a dark blue and yellow skirt resembling an umbrella, and yellow rainboots. Due to how Elnina's hair is tied around her neck, she resembles a sheep.
Lanino and Elnina appear to love each other very much, and are said to have an unbreakable bond. They often use weather-related words to describe things, especially during battle. They can be a bit self-absorbed at times, as evidenced by how they act overly prideful and cocky when Kris chooses their attack after one of them asks whose attack they prefer between Lanino's and Elnina's. Jealousy causes them to break up during their battle, however, later encounters show they miss each other very much. Eventually, they reconcile and reunite once again.
As shown by their temporary relationship with Rouxls Kaard and (possible) later relationship with Starwalker, Lanino and Elnina are capable of open relationships and could be considered polyamorous. Although their relationship with Rouxls ends poorly, it is implied they both have feelings for him, even though they initiate the relationship to be with each other.
At the Cafe in Castle Town, Lanino is shown to mistake Elnina with a Mizzle or Miss Mizzle, if paired with them
Spamton: Spamton is a diminutive ex-Addison with a large upper body, especially his head, and short legs. As with the Addisons, his colors consist of the default color palette in Microsoft Paint.[2] The two colors of his glasses, in particular, are an exact match for the colors of the eyes of FRIEND.
Spamton has black hair that is slicked back, appearing similar to a pompadour, an elongated nose, red cheeks, and white skin. Spamton wears black-framed glasses with colored lens. Spamton's right lens is pink, and his left is yellow. However, it can fluctuate between the aforementioned colors. Sometimes, his black pupils are visible. Rarely, Spamton's lens can be replaced with video noise effects, with occasional blue tears. Spamton has the ability to increase the size of his head. Additionally, his face seemingly glitches sporadically. For his attire, Spamton wears a long-sleeved black V-neck suit, and nondescript white pants and shoes. The monochrome suit and colored glasses were adopted from copying Swatch's appearance.[3]
Spamton's design seems to be based on a number of popular depictions of puppets, having the face and style of dress seen on classic ventriloquist dummies with a (non-enlarging) nose similar to Pinocchio's.
Spamton was once a natural salesman, always willing to cut a deal. While he still bears a shadow of these traits, his deals are now often senseless or violent. He claims that he became a salesman not for the money, but for the freedom to make his own deals. Despite this, he still attempts to scam Kris for money (which he refers to as "Kromer") at every opportunity.
In much of his dialogue, he seems desperate and mentally unstable, seemingly projecting himself onto Kris, contradicting himself, and saying things which make little sense. This instability seems to clear up briefly after fighting him in his NEO form, as he wishes the party success with their journey in clean and proper English.
Jackenstein: Jackenstein is a tall and burly figure with a large upper body, towering over most of the characters by a considerable margin. His body is an off-white color, with various pale green markings spread throughout his arms and upper chest. There are four circular orange patches that appear to be sewn onto his body; one on each shoulder, and one on either side of his chest. His torso bears a pattern resembling a skull, with the patches on his chest as its "eyes", a dark triangle below them as the "nose", and a curved stitch below it as a "mouth". He also has a thin, short tail that ends in a bright orange ball.
Jackenstein wears a black and orange mask on his head, which resembles a jack-o'-lantern. A pair of screw-like horns stick out of the top of the mask, and what appears to be a few strands of hair stick out between them. The mask is able to emote like a real face, allowing Jackenstein to open his mouth or blush through the mask. Its eyeholes are also able to glow orange, as seen during Jackenstein's battle. Jackenstein wears the mask to hide his true face, which resembles a small candle with ears, a single antenna, and black dot eyes.
With the screw-like horns and the sewn-on patches on his body, Jackenstein resembles various popular depictions of Frankenstein's monster, particularly his appearance as portrayed by Boris Karloff in the 1931 film Frankenstein. Frankenstein's monster is a common sight in Halloween decorations and merchandise, furthering Jackenstein's Halloween theme.
In the Light World, Jackenstein is an orange jack-o'-lantern stored inside of the church's closet. It rests on top of a black coat sitting on a brown chair. Susie assumes he is a Halloween decoration stored with "other creepy stuff".
Jackenstein is kind and playful, despite his attempts to appear scary. He hides his face due to being bullied for his "LARGE AND UGLY BODDY", and appears lonely as a result, trying to deter other people from entering the Dark Zone and coming close to him. Jackenstein has an aversion to light, preferring to stay in darkness.
After Jackenstein is defeated and healed, he is eager to help the party and moves out of the Dark Zone, though he still seems nervous about meeting other people.
