Chapter 1: The Beginning and Chapter 2: A Cyber's World. The Deltarune Compendium: Chapters 1 & 2 Core Concepts
- Light World & Dark World: The story operates in two realms. The "Light World" is the everyday town where Kris and their classmates live. "Dark Worlds" are alternate realities seemingly created from the will and imagination associated with a physical space (e.g., a classroom, a library computer lab).
- Dark Fountains: Each Dark World is sustained by a Dark Fountain, a geyser of pure darkness. The ultimate goal of the heroes is to seal these fountains to restore balance between Light and Dark.
- The Prophecy: An ancient prophecy, told by Ralsei, speaks of three heroes—a Human, a Monster, and a Prince from the Dark—who are destined to seal the Dark Fountains and banish the "Angel's Heaven," preventing a cataclysmic event known as "The Roaring," where all Darkners would turn to stone and the world would be plunged into eternal darkness.
- Pacifism vs. Violence: A core mechanic and theme. Enemies can be defeated through fighting or by acting in specific ways to pacify them, allowing them to be spared. This choice affects dialogue and certain outcomes, though the main plot remains largely the same, with one major exception in Chapter 2. Chapter 1: The Beginning
- Dark World Location: The unused classroom at school.
- Theme: A fantasy kingdom based on playing cards, chess pieces, and abandoned toys. Canon Story Flow The story begins with Kris and Susie, two students, being sent to the school's supply closet to get chalk. The closet turns out to be a gateway, and they fall into a vast, dark landscape. Kris awakens alone and soon meets Ralsei, the lonely Prince of Darkness, who explains the prophecy of the Delta Rune. Susie, meanwhile, is found by Lancer, the boisterous and goofy son of the ruling King. Seeing Susie's strength, Lancer teams up with her to oppose the "Heroes." For the first part of the journey, Susie and Lancer act as comedic antagonists, setting up simple traps and roadblocks. The group—Kris, Ralsei, and a very reluctant Susie—travels through the Fields of Hopes and Dreams and the Scarlet Forest. During this journey, Susie slowly begins to bond with Lancer, finding a genuine friendship with the spade-faced boy. She eventually abandons her role as a "bad guy" to protect Lancer and officially joins the party. Upon reaching Card Castle, the group is "imprisoned" by Lancer, who believes he is protecting them from his tyrannical father, the King. Rouxls Kaard, the "Duke of Puzzles," presents them with a series of comically simple puzzles. Susie, impatient, breaks out of the cell and confronts the King alone. The rest of the party follows, arriving just in time to see the King threatening to drop Susie from the castle parapet. The final confrontation is against the King, who is fiercely determined to protect his Dark World by opening more fountains, regardless of the consequences. After a difficult battle, the King is subdued. Lancer, with the support of the castle's populace, overthrows his father and assumes leadership, promising to rule with kindness. The heroes then seal the first Dark Fountain. Upon sealing the fountain, Kris and Susie awaken back in the school's unused classroom, surrounded by the old toys and playing cards that made up the Dark World. They leave the school, and Susie expresses a genuine desire to go back to the Dark World again with Kris, marking the beginning of their friendship. Key Areas
- Field of Hopes and Dreams: The opening plains of the Dark World, filled with simple enemies and puzzles.
- Scarlet Forest: A dense, checkerboard-themed forest. It's here that Susie and Lancer's friendship truly blossoms.
- Card Castle: The colossal, labyrinthine castle of the King, filled with guards and puzzles designed by Rouxls Kaard. Important NPCs
- Ralsei: The Prince from the Dark and one of the three prophesied heroes. He is kind, gentle, and serves as the party's healer and guide.
- Lancer: The son of the King. He starts as a wannabe villain but quickly becomes a lovable ally and a true friend to Susie.
- Seam (pronounced "Shawm"): A weary, stitched-up cat who runs a "Seap" (shop) for the heroes. He is very old and provides cryptic lore about the world and its past.
- Rouxls Kaard: The Duke of Puzzles. A flamboyant and comically inept nobleman who serves the King but is easily swayed. He speaks in an archaic, flowery manner.
- The Original Starwalker: A simple, yellow star-shaped NPC found in Card Castle. Interacting with them is optional, but they are a memorable and recurring oddity. Enemies
- Rudinn: A diamond-themed soldier.
- Hathy: A heart-themed guard with a large headdress.
- Jigsawry: A living puzzle piece.
- C. Round / K. Round: A simple checker piece that, when provoked, transforms into the muscular and formidable K. Round, a recurring miniboss.
- Ponman: A chess-pawn enemy. Boss
- King: The tyrannical ruler of the Card Kingdom and the final boss of Chapter 1. He is a powerful and intimidating figure who fights with spade-chain attacks. He believes that by creating more Dark Fountains, he will fulfill the wishes of a mysterious "Knight" and protect his people's purpose. Secret Boss
- Jevil: A chaotic, nihilistic court jester who was locked away beneath Card Castle.
- Encounter: To fight Jevil, the player must find three Broken Key fragments throughout the world and have them repaired by the smith Malius. This unlocks the prison door in the basement of Card Castle.
- Lore: According to Seam, he and Jevil were once friends, but a "strange someone" met with Jevil and drove him mad, making him see the entire world as a game. His worldview is one of utter freedom through chaos, believing nothing matters and he "can do anything."
- Battle: The fight is notoriously difficult, featuring a barrage of unpredictable, high-speed attacks themed around circus acts and playing cards. He can be defeated either by fighting or by pacifying him through tiring him out with the "Hypnosis" ACT. Chapter 2: A Cyber's World
- Dark World Location: The Hometown Library's computer lab.
- Theme: A digital world based on the internet, computers, and online culture from the late 90s/early 2000s. Canon Story Flow The day after their first adventure, Kris and Susie try to return to the classroom's Dark World, only to find it gone. They then head to the library to work on a school project with their classmates Noelle Holiday and Berdly. When they enter the computer lab, they are pulled into a new Dark World. They find themselves in a vibrant, neon-drenched Cyber World ruled by the tyrannical yet eccentric Queen. Queen captures the heroes with the intent of making them her "Willing Peons." Kris and Susie escape and begin their journey to the city's Dark Fountain, located in Queen's mansion. They learn that Queen has captured Noelle and intends to use her determined spirit to create new Dark Fountains, believing this will bring universal, forced happiness to everyone. Along the way, they encounter Berdly, who has eagerly sided with Queen to win Noelle's affection and create a world of his own design. The heroes fight him multiple times. They also reunite with Lancer, who stowed away in Kris's pocket. The central conflict revolves around rescuing Noelle. Kris and Susie find her several times, but she is repeatedly whisked away by Queen or manipulated into situations. There exists a significant alternate story path in this chapter known as the "Weird Route" (or "SnowGrave Route"), where the player's influence causes Kris to manipulate Noelle into using her powerful ice magic to permanently freeze enemies, leading to a much darker outcome and a different final confrontation. In the standard route, the party storms Queen's mansion. The climax involves Queen unveiling her ultimate weapon: a giant mech named Giga Queen. The heroes, with help from some rebellious cyber-world denizens, form their own thrash-machine mech to fight her in a punch-out style battle. After her defeat, Queen reveals she had no truly evil intentions; she simply misunderstood the nature of happiness and the dangers of The Roaring, which Ralsei explains to her. Realizing her error, she allows the heroes to proceed. Berdly is injured during the final events but ultimately reconciles with the group. The heroes seal the second Dark Fountain. Kris, Susie, Noelle, and Berdly awaken in the computer lab. They leave the library together, their bonds deepened by the shared (if hazy) experience. That night, back at home, Kris gets out of bed, rips their own SOUL out for the second time, and uses their knife to slash open a new Dark Fountain in the living room, creating a world of darkness and TV static. Key Areas
- Cyber Field: The outskirts of the city, resembling a computer's desktop background.
- Cyber City: The bustling, neon-lit main city, full of traffic, advertisements, and internet-themed NPCs.
- Queen's Mansion: A lavish and bizarre palace filled with puzzles, traps, and captured Lightners. Important NPCs
- Queen: The main antagonist of the chapter. A sentient computer program with a comically expressive face and a love for robotics, batteries, and potassium.
- Noelle Holiday: A kind and timid classmate of Kris and Susie. She plays a central role in the chapter's plot, as her latent power is sought by Queen.
- Berdly: A pompous and arrogant, yet insecure, classmate. He serves as a recurring rival and boss, convinced of his own intellectual superiority.
- Sweet Cap'n Cakes: A trio of rebellious music-themed programs who run a black market shop and help the heroes fight Queen.
- Swatch: Queen's prim and proper butler, who manages an art-themed café within the mansion. Enemies
- Virovirokun: A virus-themed enemy that spawns pop-up ads.
- Maus: A computer mouse that tries to cut wires.
- Tasque: A whip-wielding program that demands order.
- Poppup: An enemy that hides behind pop-up ad shields.
- Ambyu-Lance: A rogue medical program that attacks in an ambulance. Bosses
- Berdly: Fought multiple times throughout the chapter, both in a standard battle and in a vehicle-based encounter.
- Queen: The final boss. The fight takes place in her Giga Queen mech and is a pattern-based Punch-Out!!-style battle. Secret Boss
- Spamton G. Spamton / Spamton NEO: A frantic, glitching salesman who was once a "BIG SHOT" but fell from grace.
- Encounter: Spamton is first found as a shopkeeper in the city's trash zone. To unlock his superboss fight, Kris must acquire an Empty Disk and load it with Spamton's data from his old home in Queen's Mansion. Then, the disk must be inserted into a strange machine in the mansion's basement, which uploads Spamton into a powerful, abandoned robot body (the "NEO" body).
- Lore: Spamton's story is a tragic one about the desperate pursuit of freedom. He was helped by a mysterious benefactor communicating over the phone (implied to be the same entity that drove Jevil mad) but was abandoned when he got too successful. He is obsessed with breaking the "strings" that control him and becoming real, seeing Kris's SOUL as his ticket to freedom.
- Battle: The fight is an intense, bullet-hell shooter segment. Spamton NEO attacks with chaotic ads, pop-ups, and phone-related imagery, all while his leitmotif, "BIG SHOT," plays. He can be defeated by fighting or by "cutting his strings" through specific ACTs.
