Boyd served in the United States Armed Forces, and was in charge of handling logistics during his deployment in Iraq. During this time, Boyd witnessed his friend, Corporal Brian Kelly, become fatally wounded by an exploding IED, subsequently dying in Boyd's arms. Being the first death Boyd had ever witnessed, Brian's passing would leave a long-lasting impression in Boyd's memory.[1]

Upon his release from the military, Boyd went on a roadtrip with his wife, Abby (also a veteran) and son, Ellis on November 15, 2019. As they listen to “If I Had a Boat” by Lyle Lovett, Boyd muses about how peaceful the song sounds and how nice it would be to have a boat. Abby tells him that they still cannot afford a boat, but Boyd believes they can manage it. Abby and Ellis tease Boyd, but Boyd recalls his nickname from the army, “Mr. Fish and Loaves,” and his logistical expertise. Ellis points out that his mother’s nickname was “Iron Abby,” which she tells him not to forget. As Boyd continues to talk about the boat, Abby looks through her bag and asks Boyd to hold something. Boyd takes the object and realizes that it’s a boat key, and realizes they bought him a boat, delighting him. However, Ellis interrupts their celebration to stop Boyd from hitting the Fallen Tree on the road. Boyd exits the car, and hears the sound of crows.

The Stevens family drives through Town, grimly noting the “SAVE US” sign painted on the Barn. Boyd asks where all the people are when Father Khatri runs in front of the car, shocking them. Khatri begins to explain their predicament, but tells them that there isn’t a lot of time and they need to get to safety. Abby tells Boyd to drive away but before he can they hear an inhuman screech. This convinces them to follow Khatri, who leads them to an underground location where Donna and Dale are also sheltering for the night. Donna tells Abby she can put the gun away, as the only things that will hurt her are outside, and the gun will be useless against them. Khatri says he understands they have questions, but they can talk in the morning. They hear footsteps and screams up above as the Creatures find and kill one of the people.

Biography Background On August 3, 2018, Donna and her sister were on a hunting trip somewhere near Bozeman, Montana, and were heading north to Choteau.[1] However, they entered the Fallen Tree Road shortly before sunset. Not wanting the meat in the truck to spoil, Donna's sister decided that they should press on instead of doubling back. The first time they drove through Town, they saw people by the road. The second time, The second time, a smiling Creature stood in front of the car. Donna’s sister exited the car with a shotgun and threatened the Creature, who proceeded to rip her sister’s face off. Donna recalls running until she found a hiding place in the forest, and listened to the screams of her sister as the Creatures tortured her.[2]

In November 2019, the Stevens family arrived in Town shortly before nightfall. Father Khatri runs in front of the car, shocking them. On February 28, 2021, while driving from Boulder, Colorado to Portland, Oregon, Fatima became trapped in the Township.

Background Fu-Hen Liu is the son of Chinese immigrants Bing-Qian and Tian-Chen Liu who had settled in College Station, Texas. However, Fu-Hen, desired to fit in in America, and went by Kenny. As Bing-Qian got older, he was diagnosed with rapidly spreading dementia. One night, Bing-Qian had a particularly bad episode and took the bus all the way into Austin. On the drive back to College Station, they became trapped in the Town.[1]

Sometime after they arrive in Town, Kenny and Tian-Chen move Bing-Qian into the Clinic after he almost opened the door for the Creatures, thinking they were his brothers. Bing-Qian does not like the idea, particularly the fact that his family is not moving with them. Kenny promises his father that they will be close by and visit every day, but it is important that he be in a secure location at night for his safety. Bing-Qian refuses, but Tian-Chen tells him that he is sick, but can return when he gets better. Bing-Qian says he will get better soon, and agrees to his new accommodations. Kenny leaves to fetch his things, and is found by Boyd, who says he heard they had an incident. Kenny explains what happened. Boyd sympathizes, knowing how hard it is seeing one’s parents struggle. Boyd admits that there is not a lot holding the place together, with all the fear and confusion, but something he learned in the army is that it helps to look to, who seem like they know what they are doing. Kenny says it looks like they’re doing a good job, and Boyd offers him the job of deputy, and Kenny happily accepts.[2]

Season 2 As the bus drives, one of the passengers, Elgin, begins panicking, and says they have to turn around. He stands up and tries to convince the driver, but another passenger, Randall, tries to restrain him. As the driver, Bakta, orders them to their seats, Elgin vomits on Randall, who asks for the bus to stop. Bakta then pulls over in front of the Diner. Randall and most of the passengers wait outside, trying to take shelter from the rain outside the locked Diner while Bakta tries to clean up the bus. After watching Tillie dance, Randall returns to the bus, where Elgin is being tended to by Marielle and Brick. Randall begins scolding Elgin, who apologizes. Randall calls him a freak, and Mari tells him to back off. Randall grabs his bag, and complains about how bad it smells.

After Tom informs everyone that Tabitha Matthews is trapped in the basement of her home and they need volunteers to help retrieve her, Randall and Brick volunteer. Bakta says that they need to stay with the bus and that emergency services will handle it, prompting Randall to sarcastically call her a peach. The three meet Jim Matthews in his basement, Jim explains to Tom that she had been digging to see where the wires went. Tom asks if she was digging in the basement, what caused the main floor to collapse. Jim asks for them just to help, and Randall assures him that they will get his wife out. As they begin removing debris, the floor above them begins to shake. As the four try to carefully remove debris, the house begins collapsing. Randall is able to make it out in time unscathed, but the other three are trapped underneath the rubble. Chaos ensues as Bakta tries to lead everyone back onto the bus, while Julie Matthews tries to help her trapped father. With sunset approaching, Donna Raines fires a shotgun into the wheel of the bus and orders everyone into the Diner. Deputy Kenny Liu helps her in corralling the passengers inside, but several people run away in fear.[1]

Once everyone is inside, Donna cocks her shotgun to try and get the crowd under control. Bakta tries to get her to let them go, but Donna tells her that she has no idea what is waiting for them outside, and orders them to sit down. Donna says she understands they are scared, but promises that they are not the enemy, which is outside. Randall scoffs, and Tillie says that is an odd thing to say. Donna begins to explain their situation, beginning with the Fallen Tree.

As the night goes on, Donna observes Randall whispering conspiratorially with two other passengers. Later, Randall makes a run for the door but Kenny stops him, pointing out the screams and howls they are hearing. Randall says they cannot leave the people outside to their deaths and points out that they have guns, which Donna says are useless. As they are distracted by a scream, Randall gets ahold of Kenny’s gun and aims at Kenny, leading to a standoff between him, Donna and Matthias. Randall demands they open the door, but Donna refuses, saying doing so would put everyone in danger. Randall tries to rally the other passengers, reminding them that Donna shot out their tires. Donna says that they are all scared, but Randall refuses to listen, threatening to shoot Kenny, but Donna says he will have to shoot Kenny, and she will have to shoot him. Randall then gets distracted by a knock at the door, and Kenny regains control of his weapon while Donna whacks Randall in the face with the butt of her gun.

Dale was one of the people trapped in the Township. He lives in Colony House, but he has an antagonistic relationship with most people due to his curmudgeonly nature

By November of 2019, Dale had already gotten trapped in Town. When the Stevens family arrived as the sun was setting, Father Khatri greeted them and convinced them of the danger. Khatri leads them to an underground hiding place where Donna Raines and Dale are also sheltering. They wait out the night listening to the screams of the people caught by the Creatures.
