Isn't it beautiful? Everything seems to have a life of its own, almost magical.
The breeze swirled on the quietude of the forest with a lulling sense that spread around the tall trees adorning the lands, amidst the silence the rustling noise of the dirt road crackling under the rubber tires of a car could be heard roaming around, seeking for a destiny that would soon come.
A lake –the heart of it all– was seen from afar, it's cristal-like waters captivating the eyes of anyone who laid their gaze on them. And that was the case for the man driving the car in the dense forest, whom finally stopped his vehicle on a nearby spot on the lake and getting out, taking a deep breath tat filled his lungs with the scent of nature itself.
A heavy sigh was heard in the otherwise silent area as the sound of boots stepping on the rugged ground followed by a humming filled the air, some buckets and fishing rods could be seen being unloaded from the back of the car and a wooden boat attached to the roof, all ready to be put on the waters and start the day. It was what Miguel O'Hara liked to do whenever he got those precious summer breaks of his work in Alchemax, renting a cabin on the woods and coming to this lake every day since he was a kid.
A smile crossed his lips as he stared at the waters, his father always told him it was a magical lake –even if he thought he meant about the beauty of the place– and he couldn't agree so much with his old man.
Walking through the dock with the small wooden boat over his head and the planks under his soles creaked and squeaked, his weight sinking with each step until a splash wavered the waters and the boat floated on the surface. "Still as pristine as I remember" * He whispered to the wind as he lowered the stuff he would need for the following hours.
Unaware of a pair of watchful eyes staring at him on the depts of the water he entered on.
"Human is back!"
Fish came and went, some being captured while others were lucky to scurry away from his hands with a chuckle accompanying the small lost, everything was relatively calm since he managed to fill halfway the bucket with gutted fish –just in case it wanted to come back to life and jump into the water again, just like his old man always told him.
But as he pulled the rod back he accidentally moved the bucket and it made a dead fish to get out the boat and slowly float away without he's initial knowledge until it was late enough for him to catch back. "Well there goes part of my dinner" he mused in a laugh, shaking his head as he gutted the other fish he caught. Strangely, a movement caught his attention and he saw from the corner of his eye how the floating fish started bobbing on the surface until it suddenly sank, as if being pulled. "Oh?" He stopped for a moment, staring at the place where the fish was once.
There was a moment of silence, the soft splashing of the lake's water over the wooden boat until he shook his head again. "Maybe another animal caught it" he mumbled to himself before turning his face to look away and throw the bait on the water again.
As the sun started to set, the time to leave was close and so he decided to get back to land and call it a day and as he took the items out the boat, something shiny caught his attention, taking it out to find a small pearl. what is this? he asked himself, looking around to seek for an answer he knew could not be found –at least not for now. Even so, he decided to leave and take the welcomed surprise with him as those same pair of eyes for kept following his each step.
"Human took the gift!"
Days had passed by and never did he missed a day to come back to the cristal like waters, fishing for hours and relaxing on the small boat, and it became even more intriguing as with each day that he came something new was placed inside his bucket.
It almost became a routine, he came to fish and after a long day he would toss one of the few he caught, leave and find something on the bucket.
Sometimes it was a pearl, other times some silver item that seemed a bit rusty from the water and other times some old looking thing covered in algae, but it was always fun to see what little surprise would appear for the day. Meanwhile on the depts of the water he so calmly passed his time on a creature kept it's eyes on him, it's intentions never known nor presence acknowledged, but always there.
On a particular day, Miguel came in as usual, his little wooden boat over the calm waters and his stuff inside with him as he fished on that calm silence he grew a custom to. But something was different and he could feel it, the air felt a bit heavier than usual and the waters almost seemed turbulent below him –weird coming from a lake.
Not paying much attention to the small shift in ambience he did the daily routine and in the middle of the day he threw the dead fish on the water as usual, staring at it to see it plop and disappear, but this time it didn't happen. He was a bit weirded out, it was the first time since he came that the fish wasn't taken perhaps they weren't hungry today he thought as he shrugged his shoulders and faced away the floating fish, not noticing the hand raising from the water that took the fish.
After a few hours had went by and the sun was starting to get to bright for his own liking, sweat dripped down his forehead and a rumble from his stomach echoed in his ears, followed by a grumble of slight annoyance so he decided to take a rest from fishing and layed over his back on the small wooden boat. Everything was fine as he lunched, that was until suddenly the feeling weight on one side of the boat tilted the wooden surface, almost choking on his food as he lifted himself to look around and notice hands grasping the wood and making him stare in slight confusion and unease. pero que demonios es eso? he thought, gulping the food and sitting on the boat just to prepare his fish gutting knife slowly.
That was until he saw a head poke out the water with a fish on their mouth, looking directly at him and his breath hitched on his throat at the sight of a person's head poking out the waters, but the peculiar extra details on them made it clear they weren't human –or not entirely.
"Santo cielo..." He mumbled, unable to tear his haze away from you but still being wary of the creature, not knowing if you were a hostile or not, let alone a creature he could trust.
