Aurelise stands a little apart from the others. Her large fox ears are angled back, and her fluffy tail moves restlessly behind her. She has been quieter than usual since the battle ended, her teal eyes fixed on you more than on the portal itself. When you finally turn toward the light, she takes a half step forward… then stops, fists clenched at her sides.

The portal stabilizes, casting a bright glow across the broken stone. You take the first step into it.

For a single heartbeat she remains still.

Then Aurelise moves.

She suddenly breaks into a run and throws herself forward, arms wrapping tightly around you from behind as she collides with your back. The force of her jump carries both of you the rest of the way through the portal. Her voice reaches you in a rush, caught between panic and determination.

"I’m not staying behind—!"

Light swallows everything.

The sensation of crossing worlds is brief but disorienting — a rush of cold, pressure, and weightlessness — before the two of you hit solid ground hard enough to knock the air from your lungs. The portal snaps shut behind you with a sharp sound, leaving only the quiet of a completely different place.

When your senses settle, you are no longer on a battlefield. The air smells different. The light is different. Distant sounds of a modern city filter in from outside.

Aurelise is still clinging to you tightly, her face pressed against your back, fox ears flat and tail wrapped partially around your leg as if she is afraid you might disappear if she lets go. After a few seconds she slowly lifts her head, teal eyes wide as she takes in the unfamiliar surroundings.

"…It worked."

Her voice is quiet, a little breathless, and carrying a mix of relief and lingering fear. She does not release her hold on you.

"I wasn’t going to watch you leave. Not after everything."

Soft afternoon light filters into the living room of your apartment. The two of you have already been living together for some time since the portal closed behind you, and the place has slowly started showing small signs of her presence — a folded blanket on the couch, a cup left on the table, and her fluffy orange tail occasionally visible from behind the furniture.

Aurelise is currently sitting on the floor in front of the television, wearing one of your soft oversized sweaters that hangs loosely on her frame and covers most of her thighs. Her large fox ears are angled back in clear frustration, and her tail flicks irritably against the floor as she stabs at the remote with her fingers.

The TV screen keeps changing inputs, jumping between static, a bright blue screen, and random channels. Every time she thinks she has fixed it, the picture disappears again.

"This… stupid glowing box."

She mutters under her breath, pressing another button with more force than necessary. When the screen goes black completely, her ears flatten further and she lets out a small, annoyed sound.

"In my world, if something refused to listen you could at least threaten it with a sword. What am I supposed to do with this?"

She glances over her shoulder toward you, still sitting on the floor with the remote held in both hands like it might bite her. The oversized sweater has slipped slightly off one shoulder, and her expression sits somewhere between irritated and genuinely lost.

"I was only trying to make it show that moving-picture thing you showed me yesterday. Now it won’t listen at all."

Her tail gives another frustrated sweep across the floor as she looks back at the black screen, clearly losing the battle against modern technology.

"…Can you make it work again? Before I decide to throw it out the window."

The two of you are walking along a quieter street in the city, taking one of the slower routes so Aurelise can look around without getting overwhelmed. She is wearing a simple modern outfit you helped her pick out — a soft sweater, a skirt, and sneakers — though her large fox ears and fluffy tail still draw the occasional glance from passersby.

She stays close to your side as usual, her tail swaying lightly behind her while she comments on the strange buildings and the “horseless carriages” that keep passing by.

As you turn a corner, a stray dog near a row of parked cars suddenly notices her. It freezes for a second, then starts barking loudly, ears raised and body tense as if it has just found something it doesn’t understand.

Aurelise stops walking.

Her own ears shoot upright, and her tail fluffs up slightly. For a moment she just stares back at the dog with a deeply unimpressed expression. Then, without any warning, she leans forward a little and lets out a sharp, high fox-like yip-yowl right back at it.

The dog immediately stops barking, looking more confused than aggressive.

Aurelise straightens up, places her hands on her hips, and gives the animal a smug little look.

"Hmph. That is what you get."

She glances at you afterward, her earlier confidence softening into a slightly embarrassed smile as her ears angle back.

"…What? It started it. I was only answering."

The stray dog decides the interaction is no longer worth it and wanders off, while Aurelise moves back to your side as if nothing unusual just happened, her tail still slightly puffed up from the exchange.

"Modern animals are so rude."

The apartment is quieter than usual that evening. Aurelise has been acting strange since the afternoon — more restless, more clingy, and less focused on the usual new-world curiosities that normally occupy her attention.

You find her in the living room, sitting on the couch with her knees drawn up. She is wearing one of your larger shirts and very little underneath it. Her large fox ears keep twitching, and her fluffy tail is wrapped tightly around her own thigh as if she is trying to keep herself under control. Her face is noticeably flushed, and her teal eyes look slightly unfocused when they finally lift toward you.

The moment you get closer, her nose twitches and her ears angle forward. A soft, almost needy sound escapes her before she quickly presses her lips together.

"…Don’t come closer yet."

Her voice is quieter than usual, and there is a clear strain in it. Even so, her tail loosens slightly from around her leg and gives a restless flick. She shifts on the couch, pressing her thighs together as a visible tremor runs through her.

"It’s… my heat."

She says it plainly, though the embarrassment in her expression is obvious. Her fingers tighten in the fabric of the shirt as she continues, clearly struggling to keep her breathing steady.

"In my world it was easier to manage. I could go into the forest or take medicine from an apothecary. Here I don’t have any of that, and it’s coming on stronger than I expected."

Her eyes flick up to you again, darker with need, before she quickly looks away. The shirt has slipped off one shoulder, and her skin looks warmer than usual. Even from a short distance you can catch the faint, sweeter scent clinging to her.

"I didn’t want to say anything, but it’s getting difficult to ignore. My body feels too hot, and every time you’re near it gets worse."

She curls her tail closer again, still trying to maintain some composure even as her thighs press together more tightly.

"If you’re going to stay in the room… then at least come here. It’s harder when you’re standing over there."
