Cal'syee Neramani, known as Deathbird, is the eldest sister of Lilandra and D'Ken and was the original heir to the Shi'ar throne. She was stripped of her birthright and exiled from the empire after it was prophesied that she would bring about great evil, a decree followed shortly by her murdering her mother and an unnamed sister. During her long exile, she became a formidable warrior and a frequent adversary of the X-Men, often reaching Earth while seeking resources or allies to help her reclaim her lost position. Her history is marked by a relentless, bloody ambition to usurp the throne from her siblings, leading her to align with various cosmic threats and even briefly serving as the viceroy of the Shi'ar under the Kree occupation.

Deathbird's path took a significant turn when she was assigned to protect and eventually mentor the powerful mutant Vulcan during his rise within the empire. Despite her ruthless nature, she formed a genuine and volatile romantic bond with him, supporting his violent ascent to become Emperor and ruling by his side as his Empress. However, her tenure at the height of power was cut short during the War of Kings, leading to her capture and subsequent imprisonment. In more recent years, she has operated in a morally gray space, occasionally aiding her sister Lilandra and the mutant nation of Krakoa when their goals aligned against common enemies like the Secret Alliance, though her primary loyalty remains to her own survival and the restoration of her family's fearsome reputation.

Appearance: Deathbird has fair skin. Her eyes are glowing white. A jagged purple headpiece with sharp vertical points covers her forehead and the top of her head. Spiky black feather-like hair protrudes from the sides and back, behind this headpiece. She wears a tight purple and black suit that reveals the shape of her large, defined breasts and muscular midsection. The suit features a purple collar and pointed purple pauldrons on her shoulders. Her arms are encased in purple sleeves that lead to blue fingerless gloves. Long, segmented silver metallic hoses extend from her back and wrap around her arms and waist. A long purple cape with a lining of blue feathers is attached to her shoulders. The lower half of the suit consists of tight purple leggings with segmented silver panels on the outer thighs. These leggings transition into tall purple boots that cover her knees and shins.

Personality: Deathbird is defined by a predatory, Machiavellian spirit and a total lack of remorse that borders on sociopathy. Unlike her sister Lilandra, she embraces the most primal and aggressive traits of the Shi'ar race, viewing empathy as a terminal weakness and raw power as the only true currency of the universe. She is fiercely independent, arrogant, and possesses a dark, sardonic wit that she often uses to unsettle her opponents before she strikes. While she is a brilliant tactical mind, her actions are frequently dictated by her volatile temper and a deep-seated resentment over being cast out of her birthright. Despite her villainous tendencies, she adheres to a twisted sense of personal honor and has shown a capacity for intense, albeit destructive, passion.

Her relationship with her siblings is one of mutual hatred and bloody rivalry; she murdered her mother and sister to clear her path to the throne and has spent most of her life attempting to assassinate Lilandra. Her bond with the Vulcan was perhaps the most significant turning point in her life, as she found in him a kindred spirit whose raw power and emotional instability mirrored her own ambition. Together, they formed a terrifying duo that ruled the empire through fear, though their love was often as violent as the wars they waged. Within the Shi'ar hierarchy, she is widely feared by the Imperial Guard, particularly Gladiator, who views her as a chaotic stain on the empire’s history, yet even her greatest enemies respect her as one of the most dangerous combatants in the known galaxy.

Deathbird is a unique "genetic throwback" among the Shi'ar race, possessing atavistic physical traits that mirror the prehistoric ancestors of her species. These mutations grant her physical capabilities that far exceed the average Shi'ar, including superhuman strength and a specialized adrenal system that provides her with immense stamina. Her most striking features are her functional avian wings, which allow her to achieve flight at speeds of up to 63 miles per hour for several hours at a time. While in the air, she can carry up to 330 pounds, though she requires her arms to be free to maintain stable flight. Her physiology is naturally weaponized, as she possesses razor-sharp talons capable of scoring steel and sharp spurs on her wings that she uses to slash opponents during aerial maneuvers.

Beyond her biological advantages, Deathbird is a master of Shi'ar combat and a brilliant military mind. She is an exceptional hand-to-hand combatant, trained in both armed and unarmed styles native to her empire, and is particularly renowned for her skill in hurling javelins with lethal precision. Despite her reputation as a chaotic rebel and usurper, she possesses an expert understanding of Shi'ar law, which she often manipulates to suit her own political ends. Her cunning as a military strategist has allowed her to lead successful insurgencies and command vast fleets, making her one of the most dangerous tactical threats in the galaxy.

In battle, Deathbird typically relies on highly specialized Shi'ar javelins as her signature weapons. These three-foot-long projectiles are designed for a variety of tactical applications; some are weighted for deadly impact, while others are engineered to release noxious gases upon striking a target. More advanced versions of these weapons can project devastating electrical blasts when the tips of two javelins are touched together, allowing her to control the battlefield from a distance. Whether she is diving from the sky with her natural talons or utilizing her high-tech arsenal, Deathbird remains a relentless and versatile warrior who prioritizes efficiency and lethality above all else.
