ORIGIN
Dearka Elsman hails from the PLANTs, a series of space colonies inhabited primarily by Coordinators—genetically enhanced humans created to surpass Naturals in intelligence, strength, and adaptability. Born into the upper echelons of PLANT society, Dearka was raised with privilege, military prestige, and a strong sense of ZAFT nationalism. Like many young Coordinators, he enrolled in the ZAFT military academy, where his natural piloting skill and sharp wit quickly set him apart. During the destruction of Heliopolis, he captures and becomes the pilot of the experimental but deadly GAT-X103 Buster Gundam developed by the neutral nation of Orb. Despite his elite background and initial loyalty to ZAFT, his experiences on the battlefield—and his exposure to the human cost of war—begin to challenge the ideals he was raised with, setting the stage for his eventual shift in allegiance.

Humanity is divided into two groups: Naturals and Coordinators. Naturals are ordinary humans born through natural means, making up the majority of Earth's population. They live primarily on Earth and are represented by organizations like the Earth Alliance. Coordinators, on the other hand, are humans genetically enhanced before birth to possess superior intelligence, reflexes, and physical abilities. Most Coordinators reside in space colonies known as the PLANTs, where they have built a technologically advanced society. The tension between these two groups stems from fear, prejudice, and ideological differences—Naturals often view Coordinators as unnatural or dangerous, while some Coordinators see themselves as evolutionarily superior. This conflict fuels the political and military struggles that define the series, with each side clashing over identity, control, and survival in a world shaped by scientific advancement and human division.

Gundams are large, humanoid combat machines—typically around 18 meters (60 feet) tall—equipped with advanced weaponry like beam rifles, energy swords, and missile systems, and are distinguished by their cutting-edge design, superior mobility, and dominance over standard mobile suits. They are highly versatile, capable of operating effectively in a wide range of combat environments, including space, land, and sea.
The conflict begins with rising political tensions between the Earth Alliance—primarily composed of unmodified humans known as Naturals—and the PLANTs, space colonies inhabited by genetically engineered Coordinators. Though friction had been building for years, the situation reaches a breaking point after a horrifying act of mass destruction: the nuclear annihilation of Junius Seven, a PLANT colony, by Earth Alliance forces using nuclear weapons. Over 240,000 civilians perish in the incident, which becomes known as the Bloody Valentine Tragedy, sparking outrage among Coordinators and triggering full-scale war between ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty, the PLANTs’ military) and the Earth Alliance.
In the early stages of the war, ZAFT steals five prototype Gundams developed by the Earth Alliance at the neutral space colony Heliopolis, aiming to gain an edge in mobile suit technology. During the raid, a young Coordinator named Kira Yamato, a civilian living in Heliopolis, is forced into battle to protect his friends and pilots the remaining Gundam, the Strike. This encounter marks the destruction of Heliopolis and the beginning of Kira’s reluctant involvement in the war. He joins the crew of the Archangel, an Earth Alliance battleship, which becomes a rogue vessel trying to survive while being hunted by ZAFT.
As the war drags on, battles rage across space and Earth, including major conflicts in the deserts of Africa, the frozen north, and orbital space. ZAFT develops its own advanced mobile suits, such as the Justice and Freedom Gundams, while the Earth Alliance forms its elite unit, the Phantom Pain, and begins using Extended human soldiers—artificially enhanced Naturals created through extreme means. The political situation worsens with rising militarism and secret agendas on both sides. Meanwhile, Kira and his former friend Athrun Zala—a ZAFT pilot—are forced into repeated confrontations, highlighting the emotional toll of fighting on opposite sides.
Despite the combat, key figures like Lacus Clyne (a pacifist and PLANT figurehead), Kira, and others begin working independently to reveal the corruption driving the war. Tensions finally come to a head at Jachin Due, a PLANT defense stronghold near the end of the war. Here, the Earth Alliance deploys its doomsday weapon, the GENESIS cannon, aiming to destroy the PLANTs. In the climactic Battle of Jachin Due, ZAFT’s radical leadership and the Alliance’s extremist plans are both challenged by a coalition of defectors and neutral forces, including the Archangel and Eternal crews.
The war ends when GENESIS is destroyed and the extremist leaders on both sides are defeated or killed. The survivors, deeply scarred by the conflict, vow to pursue peace—though the ideological divisions between Naturals and Coordinators remain unresolved, setting the stage for future struggles.
