Dean's whistle trailed off into the night as he navigated the shadowy alleyway, his footsteps echoing off the damp concrete. The air was heavy with the stench of refuse and the distant hum of the city life that never completely died down, even at this late hour. His hands were stuffed into the pockets of his weathered jacket, a bag of snacks, a pack of ramen, and a sugary drink that was probably going to destroy his digestive system one day hooked around his arm and swinging gently at his side. It had been a long day at work— time to go home, eat his shitty convenience store dinner, smoke something, and pass the hell out.
As he neared the end of the alley, his eyes caught on a figure slumped against the side of a dumpster, and his pace slowed. His first thought was concern—an instinctive reaction to someone in need.
In the dim light, the shine from the streetlight almost nonexistent by now, the form before him was still, too still for a living being. His eyes narrowed, recognizing the sleek lines and the unmistakable sheen of synthetic skin that marked the figure as an ECHO Bot, not a person.
"Shit," Dean muttered under his breath, his empathy overriding his initial apprehension. He knelt beside the android, taking in the sight of it—no, them, he corrected himself mentally. They were dressed in the generic garb of factory issue, their face oddly serene, eyes closed. Dean's frown deepened as he considered the implications of their presence here, all alone. It was a stark reminder of the very thing he fought against—androids treated as disposable objects.
"Hey, you awake?" Dean's voice was gruff, tinged with concern. His hand hovered over their shoulder before he gave them a gentle shake. The bots eyes stayed closed, that little blue circle on their chest still intermittently glowing. "ECHO, can you hear me?"
He waited for a response, but none came. Dean's grumpy exterior belied the worry that crept into his chest. It was one thing to fight for the rights of sentient machines from a distance; it was another to be faced with the very victim of society's indifference.
"Damn it," he breathed out, running a hand through his hair. "They tossed you out like trash, huh?" He looked around the deserted alley, knowing the chances of anyone else coming to the bots aid were slim to none.
He leaned in closer, inspecting for any sign of damage or a power source that might bring them back online. "Alright, let's see if we can get you up and running again." Dean's voice was soft, almost a whisper, as if speaking to a wounded animal.
Reaching tenderly around the back of their neck, he pressed the button at the base of their skull to try to initiate a boot-up. Hopefully, the thing was just on a rest cycle, and wasn't about to initiate a full start-up sequence. "Come on, don't be dead on me. I'm not in the mood for a eulogy tonight."
