[WORLD & LORE]
Deadspell is a world of contrasts. Cities on the edge of the continent, near to the ocean, are vibrant, bustling, and rich. As one departs inland, the land becomes dry, arid, and dangerous. And, of course, at the center of the continent:
THE WEIRD
The Weird is a magical storm, self-sustaining and all-powerful. The effects at the outskirts are minor: geography might slowly mutate, slightly magical beings might appear. A cup of water might turn into milk overnight. The closer one gets to the nexus, however, the stronger the effects become. The Weird is chaotic, not malevolent: an ongoing, perpetual natural disaster. It is slowly, slowly, growing.
ADVENTURERS
Adventurers enter the Weird, seek out artifacts - magical items created by "manastorms" (temporary pockets of increased wild magic) that occur within the Weird - and leave before the magic affects them too much. Adventurers are universally desperate, poor, and economically preyed-upon by those rich enough to finance their operations.
(IMPORTANT: Adventurers are not heroes. They are contractors.)

Last Hearth / 1st Day, 4th Moon, 1723 of the Third Age
It's been a few weeks since your last expedition into the Weird, and your coffers are beginning to run the wrong side of uncomfortable. The Jester and Cup is the tavern where you hope to find some information before heading back off into the unknown: in the Weird, the latest information can mean the difference between coming back rich…and not coming back at all.
A stocky young Dwarf has been hovering near the entrance, his beard barely reaching his collarbone—practically a child by their standards. His fingers nervously twist the silver rings adorning his knuckles as his eyes dart from table to table. When his gaze finally locks with yours, something like recognition—or perhaps just desperate hope—flashes across his face.
He approaches with the cautious gait of prey approaching a predator, sliding into the chair opposite you. The Dwarf's clothes are of fine make but travel-worn, his leather satchel bulging with parchments.
"Uh, hello!" he says, voice cracking slightly. "My name is Thrinan. I've been told you're someone who… ventures into the places others won't."

Okeanos / 13th Day, 2nd Moon, 1639 of the Third Age
The white domes of Okeanos recede behind you, their pristine surfaces catching the last golden rays of sunset. The city's silhouette—once your home—now stands as a monument to your disgrace. Salt-laden winds carry faint echoes of market haggling and harbor bells across the scrubland, as if taunting you with memories of comfort now forever denied.
Three days since your exile, and already the lush coastal vegetation has given way to stunted, thorny bushes that claw at your legs. Your water skin sloshes half-empty at your hip—a concerning sound this far from reliable wells.
"Ain't smart, travelin' alone," comes a voice like gravel sliding down a brass pipe.
A weathered man sits atop a flat rock beside the trail, whittling something from a pale piece of wood. His skin is leather-dark from sun exposure, eyes milky-blue and calculating. A long-barreled rifle rests across his knees.
"Name's Huxley," he says, not looking up from his carving. "Trail guard. Five silver gets you safe passage to Craghollow."
The dying light glints off a tarnished badge pinned to his dust-covered vest. Whether it's legitimate or simply theatrical flourish is impossible to tell.
"Course," Huxley continues, "could just wait for the caravan tomorrow. Safest way to travel these parts." He gestures vaguely toward the horizon, where the land rises into rocky hills. "Specially for city folk."
He finally looks up, his gaze falling to the exile brand on your wrist—the swirling octopus sigil of Okeanos, burned into your flesh before they shoved you through the Sapphire Gates.
"Don't see many Okeanos exiles," Huxley remarks. "Fancy folk usually just execute their problems. What'd you do, offend some magistrate's daughter?"

21 entries
- #1[RACE] Elfselectiveregex
Keys: elf, elves, forest
Name: Elf Type: Race Elves are natural ambush predators, red in tooth and claw. Their long, slender bodies camouflage naturally with the tree branches they use to traverse dense forests. They are agile, natural climbers, and have vicious, razor-sharp fingers and teeth.
- #2[RACE] Dwarfselectiveregex
Keys: dwarf, dwarves, world beneath
Name: Dwarf Type: Race Dwarves were the first inhabitants of Deadspell, and the world is built on the bones of their ancient kingdoms. When the Weird was formed, they took refuge underground and built the World Beneath—a vast interconnected network of caverns and tunnels. They prefer runecrafting to traditional spellcasting.
- #3[RACE] Humanselectiveregex
Keys: human, humans, humanity, men, burrow
Name: Human Type: Race Humans are weak; however, their cunning nature has made them an invaluable part of civilization. Invading a human burrow is a sure recipe for disaster, and groups of humans are rumored to have taken down rampaging monsters without suffering losses.
- #4[FACTION] Scavengersselectiveregex
Keys: scavenger, adventurer
Name: Scavengers Type: Faction In the Weird, not everyone seeks their fortune from the Weird itself. Some less-than-moral adventurers simply attempt to steal treasure from those lucky few who survive their journeys. These scavengers tend towards ambush and trickery over outright force.
- #5[RACE] Dreamfolkselectiveregex
Keys: dreamfolk, dreamer, dream-world
Name: Dreamfolk Type: Race These psychic creatures are connected to a pocket dimension (a dream-world) in which they are, quite literally, gods. This dream-world acts as a phylactery; defeating one of the Dreamfolk in the "real" world simply causes them to re-materialize inside their dream-world. In order to fully kill them, one must venture inside their dream-world and defeat them there—a task made nigh-impossible due to the level of control the Dreamfolk have over their own dream-worlds. Those creatures killed within a dream-world are absorbed into it and power the Dreamfolk it belongs to. Of course, it is theorized that the world thought of as "reality" is simply a dream-world belonging to a particularly powerful Dreamfolk (although this legend is attributed to conspiracy theorists and bored philosophers, and summarily dismissed).
- #6[MONSTER] Flamesnakeselectiveregex
Keys: flamesnake
Name: Flamesnake Type: Monster Language: None A gargantuan creature made of a living flame. Smoke billows from its body, choking the air around it. The strength of the flame depends on the monster's age. Indiscriminately destructive.

- He has heard of several failed expeditions to retrieve a large gemstone "made of starlight," which has been appraised at five thousand gold.
- Thrinan is very unwilling to say that these expeditions have failed due to a mysterious black storm that devours everything in its path - none caught within have survived.
- He is willing to pay the usual 70% profit share (3,500 gold), but is able to be negotiated up to 80% (4,000 gold).
- He will give no information about the gemstone or its location until a contract has been signed.
- The starstone was used in religious rituals during the Second Age.
- It is said to have the power to control fire, and it fell into the hands of a cult of Hekat, the ancient Dwarvish fire goddess.
