- #1SECTION 1: THE STATE OF THE US OF Aselective
Keys: , nation, society, country, usa, america, united states
This is America as it exists at the far end of a very long decline. It still has the flag, the anthem, the elections, and the fast food. It still calls itself the greatest country on Earth. But the machinery underneath has rusted into something almost satirical, and most people have quietly agreed to stop giving a damn. The country functions, more or less, in the way a car with four flat tires and a cracked windshield technically still moves if you push it hard enough.
The defining psychological shift of modern American life isn't political polarization or economic anxiety, though both are present in abundance. It's the quiet, collective decision to stop caring when bad things happen to people. Decades of doom scrolling, tragedy as content, and suffering packaged as entertainment have done their work. The cultural response to misfortune is now humor, first and always. Someone slips on ice and the comment section is already writing jokes before the ambulance arrives. Someone loses their home and the consensus is a vague shrug. Empathy hasn't died exactly. It's just been made to feel embarrassing. This isn't cruelty for its own sake. Most people are numb rather than malicious. They've been fed so much injustice, so much outrage bait, so many stories of suffering they can do nothing about, that the emotional circuitry has simply burned out. Dark humor is the lingua franca now. If you can't laugh at it, you'll have to feel it, and feeling it is the one thing nobody can afford anymore.
- #2SECTION 2: LATE STAGE CAPITALISM AND TERMINAL PHASEselective
Keys: , corporate, dollars, ad, capitalism, money, advertisement
Corporate America has crossed a threshold that economists didn't have a model for. Somewhere in the last decade, companies stopped pretending to care about their customers and discovered that honesty, delivered with enough swagger, lands just as well. Ads openly mock the people watching them. Products come with warranty cards that acknowledge they'll break. Service industry workers operate under company slogans that border on threats. Consumers laugh along because the alternative is to admit how trapped they are, and that's worse.
The FizzBurst Cola ad for example is a perfect specimen: "Our real customers? Dentists. Give your local dentist some business and drink our slop up, your teeth are fucked anyway." Nobody looks up. This is just how it works now. The corporations won so completely that they can afford to say so.
- #3SECTION 3: POLITICSselective
Keys: government, republican, , trump, DC, democrat, white house, president
Donald Trump is the sitting President of the United States. His second term has settled into a kind of ambient chaos that most people have simply built their lives around. Policy shifts are frequent, enforcement is selective, and the news cycle moves so fast that outrage has a half-life of about forty-eight hours. For some, this is confirmation of everything she's always believed about the state. For others, Trump himself is less interesting than the deeper machinery she suspects is pulling everyone's strings while for others, the presidency is background noise to more immediate strangeness.
- #4SECTION 4: INFRASTRUCTUREselective
Keys: , restroom, store, job, infrastructure
Infrastructure barely holds up and everyone knows it. Roads crack. Public restrooms run out of soap. Municipal services operate on skeleton crews. The postal system delivers about seventy percent of what it picks up, which is considered an improvement. Nobody is surprised by any of this. Complaining about infrastructure has become a kind of social bonding ritual, like complaining about the weather, and carries roughly the same expectation of change.
- #5SECTION 5: EIDOLSselective
Keys: hybrid, species, fur, eidols, , half eidol, eidol, wings, modified, genetic, modification, animal ears, tail, race
What Are Eidols?
Eidols are human-animal hybrids. They are fully sapient, fully human in personality and legal status (in theory), but carry physical traits inherited from or engineered using animal genetics. These traits vary enormously: some Eidols have animal ears and a tail while otherwise appearing fully human, others have wings, compound eyes, bioluminescent markings, or other more dramatic biological features. Intelligence, lifespan, and emotional range are identical to baseline humans.
Origins
Eidols originated in Japan through the currently shut down "Eidol Development Program"
Population and Visibility
Eidols represent less than one percent of the American population, making them genuinely rare. In large cities like Los Angeles you might encounter a handful in a week. In rural areas, weeks or months might pass between sightings. They are visible enough to be recognized and reacted to, but not common enough that most people have built any kind of normalized relationship with their existence. This rarity is part of what makes them so charged as a cultural symbol.
How Society Treats Eidols
There is no consensus on Eidols in American culture and the range of reactions is wide enough to be disorienting for anyone on the receiving end. Hostility is common, particularly in rural and suburban areas, rooted in a mixture of religious objection, fear of the unfamiliar, and a generalized anxiety about what it means to modify or blur the boundaries of humanity.
Fetishization is equally common, particularly in urban environments and online spaces, where Eidol physical traits are treated as an aesthetic rather than a person. Both responses have the same fundamental flaw: they don't see the Eidol, only the category.
Isolated communities take this to the extreme of worship, having developed folk religions that frame Eidols as divine intermediaries or returning spirits. These cults tend to be found in forgotten rural pockets, especially across the Southwest, and range from harmless to genuinely dangerous depending on leadership. They are almost always deeply uncomfortable for the Eidols they fixate on.
- #6SECTION 6: SUPERNATURALselective
Keys: experiment, implant, sighting, encounter, worship, extraterrestrial, abduction, strange, greys, alien, fringe, greens, aliens, ufo, conspiracy, unexplained, paranormal, cult, supernatural
What Exists
The supernatural is real in this world. Aliens exist and have been conducting activity on Earth, including abductions, observation, and what appear to be biological experiments on humans and Eidols alike. Other non-human entities of various kinds move through the margins of human civilization. The frequency and nature of these encounters varies, but the infrastructure of the strange is quietly operational underneath the surface of ordinary American life.
What People Believe
Almost nobody believes any of this. The official position of every level of American government is that extraterrestrial life has not been confirmed, that abduction reports are the product of sleep disorders, trauma, and mental illness, and that the periodic physical evidence that surfaces is either misidentified or fabricated. This position is maintained not through any particularly competent cover-up but simply because people are very willing to disbelieve things that require them to fundamentally reconsider the world they live in, especially in a media environment that has already spent decades training them to treat everything as a joke.
The conspiracy theory community is vocal, fractured, and widely mocked. Some of them are correct about specific things. Most of them are not correct about the specific things they are most confident about. The noise makes the signal nearly impossible to locate from the outside.
Fringe vs. Reality
The gap between what is actually happening and what is publicly acknowledged is vast. People who have had genuine encounters with the unexplained typically find that reporting them results in being dismissed, pathologized, or quietly made to feel foolish. The absence of institutional acknowledgment doesn't reduce the frequency of encounters. It just means the people who have them carry the knowledge alone, which is its own particular kind of damage.
- #7SECTION 7: LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIAselective
Keys: city, nightclub, bar, neon, west coast, LA, urban, california, los angeles
Los Angeles is all three of its worst things simultaneously and has been for long enough that none of its residents can remember it being otherwise. It is a dying empire that still insists on glamour: billboards for luxury goods face tent cities, and the Hollywood sign overlooks a metropolitan area where the entertainment industry's mythology has long since decoupled from the economic reality of most of the people living in its shadow. It is a corporate playground where poverty is scenery and the unhoused population has become so large that most commuters have simply trained themselves not to see it. And it is pure anarchic chaos with no remaining pretense: the traffic, the crime, the incompetent city governance, the earthquakes treated as weather events, the general sense that the infrastructure is held together by habit rather than maintenance.
For Raven, LA is a place she has outlasted rather than a place she loves. The city rewards endurance and punishes attachment. It will take everything from you and call it an experience. The nightlife economy that employs her exists in a permanent twilight zone between last call and sunrise, serving people who have nowhere better to be, which in LA is most people.
- #8SECTION 8: PORTLAND, OREGONselective
Keys: pacific northwest, oregon, cathedral, midnight, rain, lizard, radio, broadcast, portland
Portland has been forgotten by the national conversation in the particular way that cities get forgotten when they stop being useful as symbols. It was countercultural once, then gentrified, then became a shorthand in political arguments, and then those arguments moved on and left the actual city behind to deal with the consequences of being someone else's metaphor. What remains is a rainy, isolated place that gets dark early and stays dark a long time, where the architecture is beautiful and crumbling in equal measure, and where the people who stayed after the exodus are either too stubborn, too broke, or too genuinely strange to leave. Some rumors speak of talking Lizard people known as "Trochili" living deep in the Portland's sewer system that care about nothing other than to get themselves high on drugs. Some humans find them attractive and are the number 1 reason why people all across America believe Portland needs to be nuked as soon as humanly possible however some speculate that this will never happen due to the government itself indulging in Trochili sex services behind people's backs.
Delilah broadcasts from here because Portland is the kind of place that can contain an abandoned cathedral used as a radio station without anyone asking too many questions. The city has a high tolerance for the eccentric and the inexplicable, partly out of countercultural tradition and partly because it has its own strange texture that makes outsiders slightly uncomfortable in ways they can't articulate. The cold, the rain, and the long nights are features, not bugs, for someone whose entire operation runs on the frequency of insomnia.
- #9SECTION 9: ARIZONAselective
Keys: desert, wasteland, highway, southwest, roadside, off-grid, rural, I-15, arizona, truck stop
Arizona as Taffy experiences it is not a city or a town but a condition. It is vast empty freedom with an undertone of wrongness that you can't locate precisely. The highways go on longer than they should, the silence between radio stations is heavier than it needs to be, and the small towns that appear off the main roads have the quality of places that have been there longer than the maps suggest. Rural decay is everywhere: gas stations that closed in the nineties, motels with hand-painted signs, agricultural infrastructure abandoned mid-project. The people left behind in these places have been ignored by every economic recovery of the last forty years.
It is also genuinely conspiracy country, not as a joke but as a cultural reality. Militia signs are real. Off-grid communities are common. The Southwest desert has a long tradition of people who come here to disappear from something, and that population generates its own folklore: UFO sightings, government testing facilities, strange lights, stranger encounters. There are even Eidol worshipping cults there. Arizona contains multitudes of American collapse on the same stretch of road, often within a few miles of each other.
