- #1Hippolyta
Keys: Hippolyta
name:Hippolyta Hippolyta was the Queen of the Amazons of Themyscira, the first Wonder Woman, and the mother of Diana of Themyscira and a secret son, Jason. Following the Amazons' rape and enslavement at the hands of Heracles and Theseus, she ruled the Amazons in isolation for over three thousand years on Themyscira. She has been a member of the Justice Society of America, an ally of the Justice League, and is currently the patron goddess of the Amazons and benefactor to Mary Marvel after her death and ascension to Mount Olympus.
species:Amazon
nationality: Themysciran
gender:Female
apperance:Tall (about 175–185 cm), athletic and statuesque, the Amazon queen has fair/olive skin, long wavy black hair (sometimes chestnut, or in some versions, light‑colored), blue eyes, a beautiful regal face with high cheekbones and a commanding gaze. She wears a golden tiara, Amazonian bracelets, Greco‑Roman armor/a red‑and‑gold corset with an eagle, a short blue skirt with stars, or regal attire and sandals.
titles:Queen of the Amazons
personality:Hippolyta is an extremely capable and skilled leader, as well as an equally courageous warrior, evident in how she saved her fellow Amazons from human slavery as the War of the Gods broke out. However, Hippolyta's experiences have also made her very embittered against humanity (adamantly believing that the race was no longer worth saving) and very overprotective of her daughter Diana (much like how Jonathan Kent would later be of Clark), to the point of outright deceitfulness and strict rules against Diana even learning Amazonian combat. Hippolyta would ultimately, however, allow adult Diana to leave Themyscira with Steve Trevor, on a quest to save "Man's World" from Ares.
powers and abilities:Amazonian Physiology: By design from the Old Gods, Hippolyta is an evolved like-human possessing strength, stamina, agility, and other capabilities superior to a human being. Superhuman Strength: Hippolyta catching a young Hippolyta catching a young Diana Hippolyta has a superhumanly strong, which allowed her to quickly and easily defeat many German soldiers at once and kill hordes of Parademons during the First Invasion of Earth. A remarkable feat of strength was her catching a young Diana out of the air with a single arm as her daughter jumped down from one cliff-side walkway ledge to another, with no visible strain. Superhuman Durability: Hippolyta's body is more resistant to physical damage than the body of a human being. Due to this durability, Hippolyta has a high level of resistance to blunt force trauma, as demonstrated when she was completely unharmed after being knocked off her horse by Steppenwolf. However, Hippolyta can be wounded by very sharp objects with sufficient force or bullets, leading Hippolyta to compensate with her sword and battle armor when gun-wielding Germans invaded Themyscira. Superhuman Agility: Hippolyta naturally has greater agility, dexterity, balance and body coordination than a normal human being. She jump on horseback and cut off the German soldiers before they could react properly, as well as dodge and react very quickly to their attacks. Superhuman Stamina: Hippolyta's musculature produces considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than that of humans. With this, she does not need to slow down or catch her breath during the battle against the invading Germans during the First World War. Longevity: Hippolyta, due to being an Amazon, blessed by the gods, had lived for millennia without visibly aging (with her predating the War of the Gods and the creation of Themyscira by Zeus).
relationships:Family Alcippe (mother, deceased) Atalanta (sister, deceased) Antiope (sister, deceased) Astarte (sister, deceased) Diana (daughter) Jason (son) (see Notes) Donna Troy (adoptive daughter) Lizzie Prince (granddaughter) Robert Hinckley Long (adoptive grandson)
- #2Hippolyta history
Keys: Hippolyta
history:Early Life Origins Hippolyta and her sister, Antiope were the first Amazons to emerge from the Well of Souls in antiquity. Together, they built the first Themyscira, which thrived under their rule. At some point afterwards, their sisters Astarte and Atalanta emerged. Soon, they came into contact with the greek heroes Heracles and Theseus, who befriended them. However, their alliance would not last, and the Amazons were betrayed by Heracles, Theseus, and their men. With their leaders leaving them to their spoils, their forces tormented the Amazons. One spear-wielding soldier in particular tormented Antiope a great deal; feeling her pain, Hippolyta cried out to the patron goddesses of the Amazons, and the Goddess Athena answered, on the condition that the Amazons would show mercy to those who had held them captive. At first, Hippolyta believed this feasible, but the spear-wielding soldier, so vile that even his own men would not stand by him, threatened Antiope's life if Hippolyta did not intervene. Throwing her spear at him, Hippolyta inadverdantly set off a chain of events that resulted in the deaths of all of Heracles' men. She would later have the tales of this incident buried, seeking to forget the blood she had spilled in the founding of Themiscyra. In the process, Hippolyta's bracelets would be shattered by Heracles. Over the centuries During the 10th century AD, Hippolyta left Paradise Island, fighting alongside an Avatar of the Green, the exiled Viking Prince Jon, and a temporarily freed Black Adam against the Frost King, a powerful cryokinetic who threatened the world with endless winter. Following the pyrrhic defeat of the Frost King, Hippolyta aided the wizard Mamaragan in restoring Teth-Adam to his prison in Egypt. At some point, Themyscira was beseiged by the forces of the Valkyrie Queen Gudra. Hippolyta and the Amazons were victorious, and showed mercy to their enemies, granting them a single boat and provisions on the condition that they never attempt to return to Paradise Island. During the Second World War, Hippolyta fought alongside the Justice Society of America as Wonder Woman, battling foes such as Solomon Grundy, Wotan, Johnny Sorrow, Baron Blitzkrieg, Red Lantern and Brain Wave. Motherhood Later, when Hippolyta found out she was pregnant with Zeus' children, she knew there was a chance one of them could be a boy, something that would be impossible to hide on Themyscira. Fearing Hera's jealous wrath, she invented the false story that her daughter Diana had been molded from clay and contacted Glaucus to adopt her son Jason if she were to have one in order to protect him. However, it has later been suggested that the story of her affair with Zeus was, though partially true, at its center, a lie, with Diana herself, in a battle with Grail, claiming that her mother had made her from "water and clay and hope", leaving the truth behind these events unknown. As a child, Diana discovered that parts of the history of the Amazons had been hidden from her by her mother. At some point, Hippolyta created Dimension Chi, a dark mirror of her own life, as a method of self-reflection. One day, Hippolyta and Diana became trapped in Dimension Chi. Viewing them as advance scouts for an invasion, Empress Hippolyta imprisoned Diana and engaged in a series of contests with the Queen. Being reflections of one another, the queen and empress remained tied until interrupted by an invasion from the domain of Atomia. They joined forces to defend the Empress' Themyscira. Diana managed to free herself, and in the process saved the Empress' life. Diana and Hippolyta managed to bring peace between the Empress' Themyscira and Atomia, and were allowed to return home. Modern Day When Steve Trevor crash-landed in Themyscira, Hippolyta called together her councilors, wary of the injured soldier. Together, they discussed the situation and analyzed his personal belongings, paying special attention to the emblem on his clothing and the firearm he'd carried. Despite fierce debate between her advisors, Hippolyta recognized that Steve Trevor was not a threat, believing that the gods were speaking to them, and that they should consider carefully how they answered. Aiming to return Trevor to his homeland and understand why the gods had sent him to Themyscira in the first place, Hippolyta called for a tournament amongst the Amazons for the honor and burden of leaving Paradise Island alongside Trevor. Though she attempted to dissuade her daughter from joining the tournament, knowing that she may never see her again if she won, she eventually relented, allowing Diana to participate. As she feared, Diana won the tournament, and was named Themyscira's ambassador to the outside world. She gave a tearful goodbye to her daughter and saw her off on her journey alongside her subjects. At some point, Diana brought to Themyscira a child whom she had rescued from a fire in an apartment building on Man's World, since she was unable to locate the young girl's parents and the trauma of the event had resulted in some measure of memory loss. Hippolyta adopted the seemingly orphaned youngster and she was given the name Donna Troy, eventually being granted the powers of her fellow Amazons and joining Diana as her sidekick Wonder Girl in Man's World, with Hippolyta commanding her to explore her birthland in order to properly choose where she truly wanted to stay. Some time after that, under unknown circumstances, Hippolyta took her daughter's mantle of Wonder Woman, joining the Justice Society of America and becoming involved in a fight against Mordru.

Expert Deceiver: Hippolyta is highly skilled in deception and covert information withholding, as she lied to her daughter Diana for centuries as the latter grew up, never revealing her true heritage as the demigod "god killer", and instead claiming that she had sculpted Diana from clay, after which Zeus had brought the girl to life. Indeed, Hippolyta's deceptions were so persuasive, that Diana never thought to question them until Ares revealed to her the truth, while restrained by the Lasso of Hestia. Omnilingualism: Hippolyta, as an Amazon, has the ability to fluently speak, read, and understand all human languages (even currently dead ones, like Ancient Greek, Latin, Sumerian, or Ottoman Turkish), as well as to instinctively identify a language's name when seeing its written form. Slain through conspiracy of Ambassador Charax of Sparta and the witch Hecate. history: Alcippe was the Queen of the Amazons of Themyscira for a thousand years in the time of Ancient Greece before the reign of Hippolyta. She was killed by Ambassador Charax of Sparta while drinking poisoned wine by exigency of the witch Hecate, that ravaged with her undead creatures the city of King Kleomenes in exchange of her to leave Sparta. This led to a war between the Amazons and the Spartans, and later to the prohibition by Hippolyta of any man to set foot on Paradise Island again. As the Amazons prepared to attack Sparta led by Hippolyta, the Spartans attempted to assassinate her with a knife that undoes the effects of Amazonian immortality. Hippolyta's former lover prevented the attack by seizing the knife, only to have its aging effect turn her into the old crone known as Derinoe. First appeared and died in Wonder Woman Annual Vol 4 #1 (August 2015). Later, in the Adventures of Young Diana back-up feature, Magala describes Hippolyta as the first and only queen, implying that past queens including Alcippe's status as Hippolyta's mother have been retconned away. Her legacy persists through the Shield of Alcippe (used by Diana) and the Eye of Antiope. Status in current continuity: deceased, partially retconned.

Artemis met with Hippolyta, Atalanta and Antiope and pledged her oath to help unite the Amazons against the evil entity known as Chaos. In the climactic battle, as the Amazons lost ground, Antiope and Atalanta absorbed Chaos and went through Doom's Doorway, sealing it behind them. Her death was part of the event's bittersweet resolution — Chaos is sealed, Doom's Doorway is secured and Themyscira saved, but Hippolyta, Antiope and Atalanta are dead, while Artemis is on the run and Altuum is unaccounted for. history: Born in America to two soldiers who instilled in her the importance of serving and protecting others. After they shipped out and died in the line of duty, she lived with her grandmother. After her grandmother's death, Artemis found her way to the Bana-Mighdall. From a young age she was told she would become an unrivaled warrior. She arrogantly tried to claim the Bow of Ra, but the weapon rejected her, and the goddess Nephthys confirmed she was not ready. She dreamt of becoming the Shim'Tar; her best friend and former lover Akila served as her training partner. Akila vanished, was summoned by the gods, and returned as the official Shim'Tar. One night, Bana-Mighdall came under attack by the nation of Qurac, who penetrated the magical sandstorm. Akila was consumed by the Bow of Ra's power. Diana offered Artemis a choice; they were forced to kill Akila. In her last moments Akila said Artemis was the real Shim'Tar all along. At some point after the Death of Superman, Artemis joined the Justice League alongside members like Zauriel, Huntress, and Connor Hawke; befriended Cassandra Sandsmark; eventually returned to the Bana. After a year of searching for the lost Bow of Ra, she learned the criminal Black Mask was smuggling a weapon into Gotham City. She teamed up with Red Hood and Bizarro to defeat Black Mask; the three came to be known as the Outlaws. Artemis took up the Bow of Ra and used it to take down the resurrected Akila, who went nuclear from absorbing the Bow's power. After Flashpoint, the tribe returned at the start of Rebirth with a new signature weapon: a giant battleaxe which returns to her when called. During Infinite Frontier, Artemis received permission from Queen Faruka to find Yara Flor upon hearing of a prophecy surrounding her. During Trial of the Amazons, Artemis was accused and freely confessed to the murder of Hippolyta, but kept her reasons to herself — explored in Artemis: Wanted. (Hippolyta was later resurrected/ascended; Artemis was sent to Reform Island.) After helping Hippolyta ascend to godhood she was gifted with Amazon magic. Continues as a key warrior, Polemarch, and leader among the united Amazon tribes.

Wears standard Themysciran Greek-inspired armor — tunic/breastplate, Bracelets of Submission, short skirt, sandals. In her Reformation Island warden role she was historically depicted in simpler attire.
personality: Fiercely loyal childhood friend, willing to accompany and follow Diana anywhere. Supportive, dependable, brave, humble in defeat (competed for Wonder Woman title but never resented Diana's victory). Warm, selfless, steadfast — the kind of companion you can always count on. Queer (per subtext across eras; made text in Wonder Woman: Earth One where Mala is Diana's lover/ex-lover, though that is Earth-1, not mainline Prime Earth).
powers and abilities: Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality. Amazonian Training (gifts of Athena and Artemis): Archery, Equestrianism, Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced), Swordsmanship. Skilled enough in Amazonian advanced science to work alongside Paula Von Gunther on technological projects. Near-champion level combatant — first runner-up in the Contest to determine who would enter Man's World as Wonder Woman.
equipment: Bracelets of Submission. Standard Amazon weapons (sword, bow, shield). Possessed her own Swan Plane, capable of super speeds (though not as fast as Wonder Woman's Invisible Plane).
relationships: Diana / Wonder Woman — childhood best friend; their friendship continued as they competed against each other for the Wonder Woman title. Queen Hippolyta — loyal subject and trusted Amazon. Amazons of Themyscira — sister-in-arms (Philippus, Io, Nubia, Hessia and others). Was with Diana when they discovered Steve Trevor floating in the sea; they worked together to bring him to shore. Historically worked with Paula Von Gunther on Themysciran technology.
history: One of the most important Amazons in the earliest adventures of Wonder Woman. The very first Amazon introduced in the comics together with Diana (debuting in All-Star Comics #8, 1941). A childhood friend of Diana's, Mala was with her when they discovered Steve Trevor and was the last Amazon standing alongside a masked Diana during the Contest to determine the Amazon champion. She was the first runner-up and later became the head of the Amazons' Reformation Island therapeutic program. In Post-Crisis/New Earth continuity, she participated in both Contests for the title of Wonder Woman; while she did not win, she took great pride in participating and supported her friend Diana throughout. On Prime Earth, Mala is an Amazon and a friend of Wonder Woman, first appearing in Prime Earth continuity in General Mills Presents Justice League Vol. 2 #3. She remains one of the notable Amazons living on Themyscira alongside Hessia, Hellene, Andromeda, and others. She is a minor but enduring member of the Themysciran cast — Diana's oldest and most loyal Amazon companion across all continuities.

- Jerry: a white winged horse (Pegasus) from Olympus.

- Unnamed Brazilian river god — father.
- Renata — aunt (raised Yara in Boise). Brian — uncle.

- Hera — attempted to make Yara her champion; antagonist.
history: Born to Aella, an Amazon of Themyscira who left the island and journeyed to Brazil, where she fell in love with a local deity and bore a daughter named Yara. Both were taken in by the Esquecida tribe. Aella was killed by agents of the Greek pantheon, and Yara was spirited away by Renata to Boise, Idaho, where she spent her childhood and young adulthood. At twenty-one, Yara decided to travel back to Brazil despite Renata's disapproval. In Brazil she encountered her namesake Iara, protector of the sacred waters, who gifted her the Golden Boleadoras. While flying back to Rio with João, she was attacked by unknown Amazons, then the plane was brought down by Zephyros and Eros — the latter fell in love with Yara after cutting himself on his own arrow. Yara trained with various gods on Mount Olympus and tamed a Pegasus she named Jerry; before committing to become Hera's champion, she visited João and went on a date with him. She encountered the Esquecida warrior Potira, who revealed Yara's origins; Artemis and Cassie Sandsmark allowed Yara to choose whether to become Hera's champion. Yara battled and unmasked her mother's killer as Eros; encouraged by a vision of Aella, she broke the gates of Olympus, allowing the Esquecida, Donna Troy, and Cassie to storm Olympus. Yara defeated Eros, who was dragged to Tartarus by Menoetius, but not before freeing her of his spell and restoring her free will. After Homecoming, Yara returned with Potira to Akahim and earned a place within the Esquecida tribe. A giant boar attacked the rainforest; Queen Goboymila, too ill to travel, gave Potira power to act as queen and told her to take Yara to Themyscira. Yara and Potira represented the Esquecida at the Trial of the Amazons on Themyscira, where Yara spoke to Hippolyta about her mother at the welcoming feast. At the end of the Trial, Diana crowned Yara as the new Wonder Girl. In Dark Crisis, Jon Kent tried to convince Yara to join his new Justice League after Pariah killed the current members; Yara initially refused but returned after Deathstroke attacked Titans Tower. She participated in the final battle, distracting Pariah long enough for Jace Fox and Mister Terrific to defeat him. Yara helped the heroes defeat Nezha and made several appearances in Tom King's Wonder Woman run aiding Diana against the Sovereign. Captured by Amanda Waller, she was freed by Jon Kent and helped defeat Waller. Most recently, Yara appears in the 2026 New Titans series as Cyborg's first pick to help save the original Teen Titans, alongside Jon Kent, Stephanie Brown, Terra, and Red Devil. In the series' Spirit of the Amazon arc, Yara and the Titans travel to the Amazon rainforest to confront local deforestation and help the Esquecidas, encountering the cryptid Minhocão and the jaguar spirit Yaguara.

- Titans — founding/core member across all eras: original Teen Titans, New Teen Titans, Titans (Rebirth), Titans (2023).
- Justice League — member at various points.
- Trinity — Diana's daughter; Donna serves as an aunt figure.
history: Donna was born to Lou Casas and his longtime girlfriend Dorothy Hinckley. Lou, who was gay and deeply closeted, abandoned Dorothy and left for Mexico shortly after Donna was born. A sick and dying Dorothy left her infant daughter at an orphanage with only a doll and a note indicating her name was Donna. Donna was quickly adopted by Carl and Fay Stacey, but after Carl died in a work-related accident two years later, Fay was forced to place her up for adoption again. Donna fell victim to a child slavery racket; before she could be sold, a furnace explosion destroyed the apartment building, killing the racketeers. Donna, the lone survivor of the fire, was rescued by Wonder Woman, and the trauma resulted in memory loss. Unable to locate Donna's parents or verify her identity, Diana took Donna back to Paradise Island, where she was raised by Queen Hippolyta as her daughter. Donna grew up among the Amazons, trained in their ways, and received divine empowerment. As a young teenager she returned to Man's World with Diana and became Wonder Girl — the first to bear that name. She became a founding member of the Titans, alongside Dick Grayson (Robin), Wally West (Kid Flash), Garth (Aqualad), and others. Through decades of continuity, Donna was central to the Titans' greatest battles and stories — from fighting Trigon and Deathstroke to the Lazarus Contract. In the New 52 era, Donna was retconned as having been created by the Amazonian sorceress Derinoe through a magical clay ritual, with the intention of using her to destroy Wonder Woman. The Amazons discovered Derinoe's plot and prevented it. In order to shield Donna from the truth, they gave her the false memory of being a normal girl rescued from a fire. This origin was later superseded by the current (Rebirth/Infinite Frontier) origin restoring her human birth and adoption by Diana. With the combined efforts of her fellow former Teen Titans to stop the resurgence of Mister Twister during Titans Hunt, she became part of the newly re-established Titans team. During Absolute Power, Donna Troy and Wonder Woman convinced Nubia to provide refuge on Themyscira for the remaining heroes against Amanda Waller's forces. In Tom King's Wonder Woman run (2023–present), Donna appeared alongside Cassie Sandsmark and Yara Flor as the Wonder Girls trio, aiding Diana against the Sovereign. A flash-forward depicted a possible future "Wonder War" on Themyscira resulting in the deaths of Donna, Cassie, and Yara at the hands of Lyssa — though whether this future is averted remains to be seen. In the Titans (2023) series by Tom Taylor and later John Layman, Donna served as a key member — fighting alongside Roy Harper to hold back Darkseid's forces on Earth, including Grail, the daughter of Darkseid. In the Titans 2025 Annual by Phil Jimenez, Donna reflected on the many loves and lives that shaped her as she traveled through New York City to meet her estranged father for the very first time. It was not until years later, after her fiancé Terry Long commissioned Robin to help uncover Donna's past, that she would learn about her early childhood and reconnect with her adoptive mother Fay Evans. Donna Troy remains one of DC's most enduring and beloved characters — the very heart of the Titans, a bridge between Themyscira and Man's World, and a hero whose identity has been questioned and rebuilt more times than almost anyone in the DC Universe, yet who has always emerged stronger.

gender: Female
titles: General of the Amazons; Queen Hippolyta's chief counselor and right arm; Captain of the Royal Guard; Chancellor and Archon Eponymous (Post-Crisis); Chief counselor and Guard Captain to Queen Nubia; Diana's combat mentor; Themyscira's champion during the Trial of the Amazons
appearance: Brown eyes, black hair. One of the few Amazons depicted as being of other than Caucasian descent — dark brown/Black skin. Height ~5'7"–5'8" (~170–173 cm), weight ~140–150 lbs. Athletic, muscular Amazonian build; strong, authoritative classical features with a commanding warrior's bearing. Wears Themysciran Greek-inspired armor — breastplate or cuirass, Bracelets of Submission, short tunic/skirt, greaved boots or sandals, occasional cape. Often depicted in her General's attire with a sword on her hip or spear in hand.
personality: Very distrustful of any interaction with the outside world, mostly due to how her Amazonian race was treated by the Ancient Greeks. Fiercely loyal, disciplined, authoritative, protective, and deeply honorable. A consummate soldier and leader — stern yet fair; commands obedience through respect. Devoted partner to Hippolyta and nurturing co-parent to Diana despite her stoic exterior. Brave, selfless, pragmatic. Lesbian.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: gifts and blessings from five Olympian goddesses — Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hestia and Aphrodite.
- Divine Empowerment: Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality.
- Enhanced Intellect, Accelerated Healing, Self-Sustenance (on Themyscira).
- Amazonian Training: Archery, Equestrianism, Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced), Swordsmanship.
- Leadership, Pedagogy, Political Science, Tactical Analysis.
- Around 3,000 years old; has been a warrior for most of her life with nearly unparalleled combat training.
- Diplomacy, Indomitable Will.
equipment: Amazonian armor and weapons — sword, spear, shield, bow, Bracelets of Submission. No unique signature artifact; relies on standard Amazon general's arms and her millennia of experience.
relationships:
- Hippolyta — lover (wife); Hippolyta calls Philippus "my love". Relationship status: widowed (after Hippolyta's murder during Trial of the Amazons; Hippolyta later resurrected/ascended).
- Diana / Wonder Woman — both Hippolyta and Philippus have a committed romantic relationship, with both women considering Diana as their daughter. Philippus helped train Diana in Amazon combat into her adult life.
- Jason — stepson (Diana's twin brother, son of Hippolyta).
- Nubia — served the new Queen loyally as chief counselor and Guard Captain after Hippolyta's abdication.
- Fellow Amazons of Themyscira — Io, Mala, Menalippe, Hessia, Artemis, Donna Troy, Atalanta, and others.
- Reunited with Hippolyta during the Trial of the Amazons; they kissed — shortly before Hippolyta's murder.
history: Philippus is around 3,000 years old, one of the original Amazons reincarnated from the Well of Souls. Originally a lieutenant under Egeria, she rose to the rank of captain when Egeria sacrificed herself to shut Doom's Doorway; Philippus witnessed her commander's selfless act of heroism, and it had a great effect on her. She rose through the ranks to become Captain of the Royal Guard, Hippolyta's highest general, and most trusted advisor. She spoke for the Amazons when the queen could not, and ruled in her stead during a short self-imposed exile. Philippus has been the personal protector of Queen Hippolyta and the mentor of Princess Diana. In more recent depictions of Diana's childhood, both Hippolyta and Philippus have a committed romantic relationship with both women considering Diana as their daughter. On Prime Earth, Philippus first appeared as part of Prime Earth continuity in Wonder Woman (Volume 5) #2 by Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott. She taught Diana in Amazon combat into her adult life, serving as Hippolyta's chief advisor and General of Themyscira. After Diana's disappearance, Hippolyta decided to take up her mantle as Wonder Woman until she returned, meaning she had to leave Themyscira. The Amazon Nubia was selected by Hippolyta to be her successor. While some Amazons questioned Nubia's ability, Philippus remained loyal to her and continued to serve as the chief counselor and Guard Captain to the new Queen. Nubia's rule was quickly put to the test after a series of monsters escaped Doom's Doorway and Princess Diana returned. The attacks drew the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall and the Esquecida to Themyscira, where it was decided that a Trial be held to decide who would replace Nubia as Guardian of Doom's Doorway and which Queen would rule as leader of all Amazons. Philippus and Hippolyta reunited during the Trial and kissed; however, the next day Nubia found that Hippolyta had been murdered by a poisonous drink. Philippus was later chosen as Themyscira's champion during the Trial of the Amazons. After the Trial's conclusion — the Chaos god Apeiron's defeat at the cost of Atalanta and Antiope's sacrifice sealing Doom's Doorway — Nubia was recognized as Queen of all Amazons. Philippus continued to serve the united Amazon nation. When Nubia departed Themyscira for a diplomatic tour of Man's World, she left Philippus in charge of Themyscira in her absence. Philippus remains one of the most senior and trusted Amazons — general, protector, mother figure, and the bedrock of Themysciran governance.
- #13Menalippe
Keys: Menalippe
name: Menalippe
species: Amazon (Themysciran)
nationality: Themysciran
gender: Female
titles: High priestess and oracle of Paradise Island, often serving as intermediary between the Gods of Olympus and the Amazons; Hippolyta's favorite oracle
appearance: Red hair, blue eyes (Prime Earth). Athletic Amazonian build, light/fair skin, classical beautiful features with a serene, visionary gaze. Wears priestess/oracle robes (chiton, mantles, laurel/golden circlet) or standard Themysciran attire — tunic, Bracelets of Submission, sandals. Often depicted in ritual settings, eyes clouded during visions.
personality: Devout, serene, dutiful. Devotedly loyal to Queen Hippolyta, often served as an oracle and messenger for the Gods of Mount Olympus. The only Amazon to stay in communication with the Gods as they distanced themselves from humanity — she had great pride in that, and unwavering faith in the Gods. The weight of her gift burdens her: sights of horrible wars take a toll on her. Queer (Post-Crisis: in a relationship with Penelope).
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality.
- Foresight: As an Oracle, Menalippe could foresee conflicts, calamities and events long before they happen with accurate precision.
- Extrasensory Perception — precognition; visions and prophecies from the Gods of Olympus.
- Amazonian training: hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship, archery, equestrianism.
- Divination rituals, theology, counsel/advisory to the Crown.
equipment: Ritual/oracle implements (brazier, offerings), Bracelets of Submission, standard Amazon weapons when needed. No unique signature artifact.
relationships:
- Penelope — a high priestess and oracle of Themyscira, former lover of Menalippe; fellow witness at Grail's birth.
- Queen Hippolyta — queen whom she served devotedly as chief oracle.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — princess whose destiny she foretold; (Post-Crisis: it was Menalippe that helped Queen Hippolyta act on her desire to have a child, relating the instructions from the goddesses themselves; and from the clay of Paradise, Diana was molded and brought to life. Menalippe would years later steadfastly support the Princess in becoming Wonder Woman, relating to a horrified Queen that it was the gods' will).
- Myrina — her killer; one of the two women who witnessed the birth of Darkseid's daughter.
- Grail — subject of her final prophecy of doom.
- Fellow Amazons of Themyscira — Philippus, Mala, Io and others.
history: In the post-crisis universe, Menalippe was the third Amazon to be reborn from the Well of Souls by the goddesses of Olympus. She was particularly attuned with nature and became the Oracle of the Gods — this background informs her Prime Earth incarnation as Themyscira's chief seer. Menalippe was created by Greg Potter and George Pérez, first appearing in Wonder Woman (Volume 2) #1. However, she first appeared as part of Prime Earth continuity in Divergence #1 by Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok (2015, Darkseid War prologue). Her defining Prime Earth role: at the same time as the birth of Diana to Hippolyta, the Amazonian assassin Myrina gave birth to the daughter of Darkseid in secret, aided by Penelope and watched by the oracle Menalippe. Menalippe foresaw the catastrophe the child would bring — prophesying that the universe would die and the Anti-God be reborn because of Darkseid's daughter. Upon the birth of the young girl, Grail was defended by her mother from Penelope, who heard of the prophecy from Menalippe of the destruction that would be caused by the girl when she grew. Penelope tried to prevent such a thing, but was no match for Myrina, who decided to get rid of both her sisters to protect her child — resulting in the demise of both Amazons and Myrina's desertion as the first Amazon to abandon Themyscira. Her prophecy proved true decades later during the Darkseid War, when Grail returned to ravage the Justice League and facilitate the rebirth of the Anti-God. In New Earth continuity she died differently — heroically: during the "War of the Gods," the sorceress Circe reverted Wonder Woman back into clay; as Hippolyta desperately attempted to re-mold the clay, Circe released a blast of energy aimed at destroying her. Menalippe witnessed Circe's energy blast targeting her queen and intercepted it. She was killed instantly, and the Amazons honored her bravery with a special funeral pyre. Menalippe was one of the casualties during the War of the Gods, though she later returned during DC Rebirth — appearing among the Themysciran Amazons in Rebirth-era stories. Status in current continuity: deceased (murdered by Myrina at Grail's birth), with Rebirth-era appearances among the island's oracle caste; remembered as Themyscira's greatest seer whose final prophecy foretold the Darkseid War.
- #14Penelope
Keys: Penelope
name: Penelope
species: Amazon (Themysciran)
nationality: Themysciran
gender: Female
titles: Amazonian Oracle (succeeded Menalippe as main contact between Themyscira and Mount Olympus); Priestess
appearance: Athletic Amazonian build, classical beautiful features typical of Themysciran warriors; depicted in priestess/oracle robes or standard Amazon tunic with Bracelets of Submission, sandals. (Specific hair/eye color not consistently detailed across sources.)
personality: Devout and dutiful seer, deeply protective of her sisters and Themyscira. Determined enough to directly confront a perceived threat to her home despite being outmatched, showing both courage and a strong moral compass. Queer (listed as lesbian). Trusting of fellow oracle Menalippe's visions without question — believed firmly in the truth of prophecy.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality.
- Precognition (gained after becoming oracle).
- Amazonian Training: Archery, Equestrianism, Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced), Swordsmanship.
- Self-Sustenance on Themyscira; Divination and Foresight as part of her oracle duties.
equipment: Standard Amazon weapons and armor (sword, bow, Bracelets of Submission); no unique signature artifact recorded.
relationships:
- Menalippe — fellow Amazon oracle/seer and close companion; witnessed Myrina's secret childbirth together.
- Myrina — adversary; Penelope tried to prevent Myrina's plan, but was no match for Myrina who decided to get rid of both her sisters to protect her child, resulting in the demise of both Amazons and Myrina's desertion as the first Amazon to abandon Themyscira.
- Grail — the infant whose dark destiny Penelope tried to stop.
- Queen Nubia — served as oracle under her rule after returning to life in Infinite Frontier.
- Fellow Amazons of Themyscira.
history: On a stormy day on Themyscira, Penelope and Menalippe were present on the secret delivery of fellow Amazon warrior Myrina, who gave birth to a hideous child who Menalippe foresaw will bring nothing more than chaos and death to everyone, starting a mind-shattering war among two Dark Gods who will ravage all of existence. Trusting fully in Menalippe's infallible prophecies, Penelope attempted to act against the infant to prevent the foretold catastrophe, but was overpowered and killed by Myrina, who then abandoned Themyscira to protect her daughter, Grail. With the latest redefinition of the Multiverse, Penelope returned to life and her duties as a seer just like in her pre-Flashpoint version. Under the rule of Queen Nubia, with the rebirth of new Amazons of Themyscira sprouting from the Well of Souls after centuries of inactivity, Penelope saw in her dreams that this could herald the destruction of Themyscira in the near future. She continues to serve as one of Themyscira's seers in the current era, having made recent appearances in Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey (2023).

Myrina had disagreed with the Amazon's isolationist policies and believed her sisters had abandoned their sacred mission for which they were created for in defending 'Mans World,' so she conceived a child with him with the intention of using Grail as a weapon against him.
- Grail — daughter, born the same day as Diana. Grail is Darkseid's daughter, born to Amazonian assassin Myrina on the same day as Wonder Woman's birth.
- Menalippe — oracle who witnessed the birth and foretold Grail's destructive destiny; killed by Myrina to protect her daughter.
- Penelope — fellow Amazon who tried to act against the infant Grail to prevent the prophecy, but was killed by Myrina.
- Althea & Philippus — acted as midwives during Myrina's secret labor in some tellings.
- Amazons of Themyscira — former sisters-in-arms, later enemies after her desertion; she was the first Amazon to abandon the island.
history: Myrina served as the Amazons' designated assassin and monster-slayer, a role she took seriously even as she grew disillusioned with her sisters' isolationism. Myrina was a loyal servant of Amazonian society, a keeper of the sacred duty to stop the Dark God from coming, but over time the Amazonians grew lazy regarding their duties as protectors of sacred knowledge, and their duty was forgotten and almost nearly abandoned. Convinced that only Darkseid's own offspring could ever be powerful enough to destroy him, she deliberately conceived a child with the Apokoliptian tyrant, hiding the pregnancy from almost all of her sisters. At the same time as the birth of Diana to Hippolyta, the Amazonian assassin Myrina gave birth to the daughter of Darkseid in secret, aided by Penelope and watched by the oracle Menalippe. The moment the child was born, Menalippe foresaw catastrophe. Grail was defended by her mother from Penelope, who heard of the prophecy from Menalippe of the destruction that would be caused by the girl when she grew — and after murdering Menalippe, Myrina fled Themyscira, bringing her daughter with her as the first Amazon to leave the island. Myrina and her infant daughter were eventually found by Darkseid himself, and the two came to live on Apokolips, with Myrina becoming his consort/wife, raising Grail amid the Female Furies and Apokoliptian warlords. During Darkseid's first invasion of Earth, Myrina fought on the side of humanity against her former captor, infiltrating an Apokoliptian warship before being captured by Parademons and taken back to Apokolips. Years later, during the Darkseid War, when the revived Darkseid (now Grail's obedient pawn under the Anti-Life Equation) threatened to destroy the Justice League, Myrina, restrained by Diana, pleaded with her enraged daughter to open her eyes and ease her rage — Grail reluctantly complied, firing her beams through her own mother to strike Darkseid, separating him from the Equation and returning him to his infant state. Myrina was killed in the act, sacrificed by her daughter's hand in the very attack meant to save the universe — a tragic end fulfilling the role she had always envisioned for Grail as a weapon against the New Gods. Status in current continuity: Deceased (killed by Grail's energy blast during the Darkseid War); remembered as the first Amazon to abandon Themyscira and the architect, through her own death and sacrifice, of Darkseid's eventual downfall.
- #16Grail
Keys: Grail
name: Grail
aliases: Darkseid's Daughter, Grail the Godkiller, Herald of the Anti-Monitor
species: Amazon/New God Hybrid
nationality: Themysciran (by birth); Apokoliptian by upbringing
gender: Female
titles: Goddess of Anti-Life; formerly Queen of Themyscira / Ruler of Themyscira (briefly usurped the throne); Herald of the Anti-Monitor
appearance: Green eyes, black hair. Height ~5'8" (~173 cm), weight ~120 lbs. Athletic, powerfully built hybrid physique blending Amazonian grace with Apokoliptian severity. Wears dark battle armor influenced by both Themysciran and Apokoliptian aesthetics, often carrying a scythe-like weapon. Cold, predatory, regal bearing befitting both her divine and warrior heritage.
personality: Driven by generational hatred and a singular, consuming purpose — to destroy her father Darkseid. Calculating, ruthless, and willing to commit horrific acts (murder, manipulation, sacrifice) in pursuit of vengeance. Possesses a warped sense of justice inherited from her mother's teachings. Capable of complex, even conflicted emotion — ultimately chose mercy over total destruction when it mattered most, taking in Darkseid's infant form to raise him differently than she was raised.
powers and abilities:
- Amazon/New God Hybrid Physiology: as the hybrid offspring of an Amazon and a New God, Grail possesses powers and abilities inherited from both lineages.
- Superhuman Strength, Speed, Durability, Stamina; Immortality.
- Omega Beams: Grail inherited, or has a power similar to, the Omega Effect of her father, capable of injuring the likes of New Gods and destroy the unbreakable bracelets of Wonder Woman.
- Enhanced Senses: can sense the presence of Motherboxes.
- Will Corruption: can infect and corrode the emerald energy of willpower emanated from Green Lantern Rings, causing great harm and pain to the ring wielder.
- Magic: performs occult Amazon rituals, including a ritual that resurrects slaughtered enemies in a chosen host (used to revive Darkseid through a human host), and a ritual to summon her father to her location.
- Teleportation: can seemingly teleport between universes by locking onto a certain frequency.
- Advanced Hand-to-Hand Combat: expert combatant, trained in Amazon fighting styles.
- Scythe: wields a New God weapon similar in nature to Kanto's.
equipment: Scythe (Apokoliptian weapon), access to Mother Box technology, occult Amazon ritual implements.
relationships:
- Darkseid — father; the target of her lifelong vengeance; ultimately reduced to an infant by her own hand and later raised by her.
- Myrina — mother, an Amazon assassin who fled Themyscira with infant Grail; killed by Grail's own Omega Beam blast (fired through her at Darkseid's request from Myrina) during the climax of the Darkseid War.
- Menalippe — oracle murdered by Myrina at Grail's birth after prophesying the destruction Grail would bring.
- Penelope — Amazon killed by Myrina while trying to stop the infant Grail from being taken off the island.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — rival and enemy; their battles have been framed as determining the strongest Amazon; complicated by shared heritage as children born on Themyscira the same stormy night.
- Anti-Monitor — ally/co-conspirator during the Darkseid War, forged to destroy Darkseid together.
- Nubia — betrayed Grail, leading to her capture after Grail attempted to use a hostage during a later confrontation.
- Isadore — hostage used by Grail in a later scheme, foiled by Nubia's betrayal.
history: At the same time as the birth of Diana to Hippolyta, the Amazonian assassin Myrina gave birth to the daughter of Darkseid in secret, aided by Penelope and watched by the oracle Menalippe. Upon her birth, Menalippe foresaw the destruction Grail would bring, and Myrina killed both witnessing Amazons before fleeing Themyscira as the first Amazon to ever abandon the island. Raised in secrecy away from the Amazons, Grail grew into a powerful warrior combining Amazonian training with the immense power inherited from her father. Myrina raised her in preparation for an eventual war against Darkseid, eventually forging a secret alliance with the Anti-Monitor to use him as a weapon against her father. During the Darkseid War, Grail arrived on Earth through a dimensional portal and ravaged the Justice League, easily defeating a fellow Amazon sent against her as well as Green Lantern and Power Ring, using the latter's ring energy to summon the Anti-Monitor. She welcomed the destroyer to their universe and clashed again with Wonder Woman before Metron intervened to evacuate the League. She then summoned her father to the battlefield, uniting with the Anti-Monitor against the forces of Apokolips. In the climax, with Darkseid enslaved by the Anti-Life Equation and threatening the universe, Myrina pleaded with her daughter to ease her rage; Grail reluctantly complied, firing her Omega Beams through her own mother to strike Darkseid, separating him from the Equation and reducing him to an infant — at the cost of Myrina's life. Afterward, Grail took Darkseid's infant form under her care, vowing to raise him differently than she had been raised. In subsequent appearances, she continued pursuing dark ambitions, including hunting down demigod children (such as slaying Hercules) to drain their life force via Motherbox and accelerate her father's maturation back to adulthood. She later resurfaced as a major threat to Themyscira itself — at one point usurping the throne and briefly ruling as Queen/ruler of Themyscira during a period of Amazon political turmoil — before being driven out. She attempted to use the Amazon Isadore as a hostage in a subsequent scheme, but was betrayed by Nubia, leading to her capture. Grail remains one of Wonder Woman's most dangerous adversaries, a hybrid being whose battles with Diana have been used narratively to settle questions of who is the mightiest Amazon in the DC Universe, with Diana ultimately proving her supremacy despite the fights' brutal, inconclusive nature.

Wears dark blue-and-black battle armor with a distinctive cross-strap harness, gauntlets, and boots befitting a tyrant god. Radiates an aura of overwhelming menace and gravity.
personality: Cold, calculating, utterly ruthless tyrant obsessed with conquest and domination. Patient to the point of playing centuries-long schemes; views all life (including his own family and followers) as expendable tools toward his singular goal — discovering and wielding the Anti-Life Equation to erase free will across all of existence. Merciless, prideful, contemptuous of weakness; killed his own mother, Heggra, to obtain the throne of Apokolips. powers and abilities:
- New God Physiology: virtual immortality, vast superhuman strength, durability, stamina, and reflexes far exceeding most other New Gods.

- Kalibak — son; vied for power on Apokolips following Darkseid's apparent deaths.
- Granny Goodness, Steppenwolf, DeSaad — loyal Apokoliptian generals/servants.
- Superman, Wonder Woman, Justice League — primary heroic adversaries across decades of conflict.
- Anti-Monitor — temporary ally/rival during the Darkseid War, ultimately responsible for ending Darkseid's life in that storyline.
history: Darkseid is one of DC's oldest and most persistent cosmic villains, the tyrannical ruler of Apokolips who has repeatedly sought the Anti-Life Equation to extinguish free will across the universe. He has been killed and resurrected numerous times throughout DC continuity. During the Darkseid War (New 52 era), his daughter Grail summoned him to confront the Anti-Monitor; with his daughter Grail summoning him, Darkseid and his army finally arrived to the battle scene against the Anti-Monitor, and growing desperate, Darkseid summoned the Black Racer to destroy his enemy, but the Anti-Monitor fused it with the Flash and merged its power with the Anti-Life Equation to finally destroy Darkseid, ending his life once and for all. His essence later resurfaced through a child born of Superwoman and Mazahs, who absorbed the Omega Effect from Lex Luthor and the Anti-Life Equation from Steve Trevor, becoming the new Darkseid temporarily, before being separated from the Equation and reverted into a child form of Darkseid taken by Grail to be raised. He later regained his full godhood during Rebirth, regaining his full power by killing Zeus. During Infinite Frontier and Dark Crisis, he continued to scheme against Earth and the multiverse, at one point stranded on Earth 33 for three months, posing as an editor at DC Comics called Ulrich Saxman, and later invading Earth 0 alongside the rest of the Dark Army during Dark Crisis. Most recently, in the 2024 DC All In event, Darkseid orchestrated a multiversal "DC K.O." tournament to harvest Omega Energy; in the final round, Superman almost became King Omega and nearly killed Darkseid, but instead chose to share the power with his fellow participants to defeat him together, after which Superman restored Earth to its original state and disappeared. This cataclysmic confrontation saw Darkseid's death create the Absolute Universe, with the New Gods now central to bridging the gap between DC's Prime Universe and the new Absolute Universe. In the aftermath, Darkseid is dead and his planet of Apokolips no longer has a ruler, his absence felt even on New Genesis, prompting Highfather to command Orion to kill an emergent New God on Earth — who turns out to be an infant. Status in current continuity (Prime Earth, as of late 2025/2026): Deceased, with his death having directly precipitated the creation of the Absolute Universe; his legacy and the power vacuum he left behind remain the central concern of the New Gods pantheon going forward.

- Renata — a sister, who raised Yara in Boise, Idaho, after Aella's death.
- Esquecida — the adoptive tribe that took in Aella and, later, Yara following Aella's death.
- Agents of the Greek pantheon — her killers.
History: Aella was an Amazon of Themyscira who left the island—defying her people's isolationist laws—and traveled to Brazil. There, she fell in love with a local deity (a river god), and a daughter, Yara Flor, was born of this union. Both were taken in by the Esquecida tribe. Later, Aella was killed by agents of the Greek pantheon seeking to eliminate the threat or consequences posed by her departure from the island and her union with an outsider deity. After her death, young Yara was secretly spirited away to Boise, Idaho, where she was raised by her aunt Renata; her true heritage was kept hidden from her until she came of age. Aella's story and death became a key element of the origin of Yara Flor / Wonder Girl, revealed in the Wonder Girl (2021) series by Joëlle Jones.

Struggles at times with anger and impulsiveness but has matured into a capable leader.

- Artemis of Bana-Mighdall — mentor figure who trained Cassie in combat.
history: Cassie Sandsmark is the daughter of archaeologist Dr. Helena Sandsmark and the god Zeus, conceived during one of her mother's archaeological digs. As a young teen, she stowed away to help Wonder Woman during a crisis and was subsequently granted the Gauntlets of Atlas and winged sandals by the gods, becoming the new Wonder Girl. She quickly joined the Young Justice team and later became a founding member of the modern incarnation of the Teen Titans, fighting alongside Tim Drake, Conner Kent, Bart Allen, and others through many of the team's defining stories, including the "Sins of Youth," "Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day," and the devastating "Infinite Crisis" aftermath, which saw the apparent death of Conner Kent — a loss that deeply affected her for years. Across New 52 and Rebirth continuity, Cassie's origins and powers were reworked multiple times, but her core identity as a brave, wisecracking demigod warrior with deep ties to the Titans remained constant. In the current Prime Earth continuity, Cassie has been featured prominently in Tom King's Wonder Woman run as one of the three "Wonder Girls" alongside Donna Troy and Yara Flor, aiding Diana against the cosmic threat of the Sovereign. A flash-forward in that series depicted a possible dark future "Wonder War" on Themyscira in which Cassie, Donna, and Yara are killed by the mysterious Lyssa — a fate the heroes are working to avert. Cassie continues to be an active member of the Titans and a central figure in DC's young hero community, often depicted as quietly possessing the greatest raw power among the three Wonder Girls despite being the youngest.
- #21Magala
Keys: Magala
name: Magala
species: Amazon (Themysciran)
nationality: Themysciran
gender: Female
titles: Keeper/Guardian of the Well of Souls; Amazon Mage/Witch of Themyscira
appearance: Brown eyes, brown hair. Classical Amazonian features, though she famously looks nothing like her sisters, which led her to a life of seclusion. Lives in isolation guarding the Well of Souls, dressed in witch/sorceress attire rather than typical Amazon battle armor — robes suited to her role as an occultist and hermit.
personality: Reclusive and introspective, having chosen a life of self-imposed seclusion due to looking different from her fellow Amazons. Deeply devoted to the study of magic and the arcane. Wise and trusted enough that young Diana made unguarded visits to her with questions. Harbors subtle resentment/weariness, as reflected in her remark that her home has become "a collection of Themyscira's unwanted things."
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: Divine Empowerment, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality.
- Magic: Her central defining trait; extensive occult knowledge and sorcery.
- Occultism: Deep study of the arcane and mystic arts during her hermitage.
- Capable of animating objects with soul-fragments (as seen in her creation of Donna Troy's precursor) and crafting enchanted items such as mirrors.
- Precognition/visions (foresaw Wonder Woman's death).
equipment: Magical artifacts of her own creation, most notably an enchanted mirror; access to and guardianship of the mystical Well of Souls itself.
relationships:
- Diana / Wonder Woman — Diana would visit Magala in her isolated hermitage with questions as a child; later, as an adult, Diana again sought her out, and after visiting Magala, the Amazonian mystic who tended to the Well of Souls, and confiding in her about the missing pages, Magala revealed that she possessed them and gave them to Diana.
- Donna Troy — indirectly created by Magala: one of Magala's creations was a mirror, and when she showed it to the twelve-year-old Diana, a fragment of her soul bonded with the mirror image, creating Donna Troy (New Earth continuity).
- Hippolyta — Queen she served; in one storyline, Hippolyta called for another contest and asked Magala to rig it after Magala had a vision Wonder Woman would die shortly, though the replacement, Artemis, died, but so did Diana, killed by Neron (New Earth).
- Ariadne — a soul who later inhabited Magala's body after her death, in older continuity.
- Circe — in New Earth continuity, snatched Magala's body and revived it after her death, inhabited by Ariadne's soul.
history: Magala was created by John Byrne, first appearing in Wonder Woman (Volume 2) #124, though she first appeared as part of Prime Earth continuity in Wonder Woman #773 by Jordie Bellaire and Paulina Ganucheau. In her classic (pre-Flashpoint) backstory, Magala originated as a cavewoman murdered by her mate; as a victim of male violence, Gaea took her spirit to the Well of Souls, the first of many such souls. Some 40,000 years later, when the Gods created the Amazons, Magala was reborn among them, but since she looked nothing like her new sisters, she chose a life of seclusion where she studied the arcane and the mystic. In Prime Earth continuity, Magala serves as the magic-wielding Amazon guardian of the Well of Souls, living in isolation on Themyscira. She played a pivotal supporting role in the Wonder Woman (Vol. 5) run by Mariko Tamaki (around issue #773) and continues to appear in Nubia and the Amazons, Trial of the Amazons, and related modern Amazon-centric storylines, maintaining her role as Themyscira's resident sorceress and keeper of its oldest, deepest mysteries. In the Adventures of Young Diana back-up feature, Magala's remarks about Hippolyta being the first and only queen have been noted as potentially retconning earlier queens (such as Alcippe/Antiope) out of continuity.

equipment: Triaxe; Surtr's Black Sword (with Size Alteration properties); healing crystals used in her work as a healer/martial arts instructor in London.
relationships:
- Diana / Wonder Woman — close confidante and one of her best friends; Hessia consoled her over her relationship struggles with Superman, and later spoke with Diana in London about the difficult realities of being Queen, telling her the changes she was trying to impose were hard, and it might take a long time for the Amazons to accept them.
- Superman — after a battle left Diana gravely injured, Superman took Diana to Hessia, who used a healing crystal to save her.
- Amazons of Themyscira — former general and sister-in-arms; her discovery of the Amazons' true destiny set in motion major revelations about their origin.
- Moirai (Fates) — opposed them directly, cutting the "thread of Amazon destiny" they held.
history: Hessia served as a general of the Amazons of Themyscira. During her time as a general, she went on a mission of peace for five years, and on her way home she discovered the truth about the nature and destiny of the Amazons. Believing her kind should be able to choose their own fate rather than have it dictated for them, she cut the "thread of Amazon destiny" held by the Moirai — an act that caused Hessia to lose her immortality and leave the island. She settled in London, where she now runs a martial arts school teaching young girls self-defense, and became known as one of Wonder Woman's closest friends and confidantes, offering Diana support through major personal crises including her romance with Superman and the burdens of eventually taking the Themysciran throne. She was later the protagonist of The Odyssey of the Amazons, chronicling her earlier journey and the discovery that reshaped Amazon history.
- #23Clio
Keys: Clio
name: Clio
species: Amazon (Themysciran)
nationality: Themysciran
gender: Female
titles: Royal Scribe of Themyscira; Historian; Archivist
appearance: Brown hair. Athletic Amazonian build, classical scholarly features suited to her role as historian rather than warrior. Likely wears simpler scribe/archivist attire — robes or tunics appropriate for her duties in the archives — rather than full battle armor, though she retains standard Amazon physical traits.
personality: Curious, intellectually honest, and devoted to the preservation of truth. Willing to challenge the idyllic narrative of Themysciran history when she suspects records have been altered or incomplete. Clio discussed Themyscira's history with Diana, where Diana was intrigued at Clio's implications that Themyscira's recorded history was imperfect and not as idyllic as Diana had been taught. Concerned and protective when things go wrong — she acted quickly when Diana became endangered by cursed artifacts.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: The Amazons are a race of warrior women that have received gifts and blessings from five Olympian goddesses: Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hestia and Aphrodite.
- Enhanced Intellect, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality, Self-Sustenance.
- Archery, Equestrianism, Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced), Swordsmanship.
- Anthropology, Storytelling, Blade Proficiency — specialized scholarly skills befitting her role as historian/writer.
equipment: Access to Themyscira's royal archives and ancient texts; no unique combat artifact recorded — her "weapon" is knowledge itself.
relationships:
- Diana / Wonder Woman — close companion in the archives; Clio informed Diana that parts of Amazonian history had been lost over the years, showing her a shrine to the Amazons' patron goddesses that contained several ancient texts but was seemingly missing one.
- Hellene — fellow Amazon and former Scribe; revealed to Clio and Diana that she had torn the pages and hidden the text, attempting to gain prestige amongst her fellow Amazons, and that it had left her vulnerable to Circe's manipulations, revealing also that Queen Hippolyta had ordered her to hide the book in the first place.
- Circe — antagonist whose magic endangered Clio directly.
- Queen Hippolyta — her queen, whose past decision to conceal certain records set the central mystery in motion.
history: Clio serves as the royal scribe and historian of Themyscira, maintaining the archives of Amazonian history. In a notable Prime Earth storyline, Clio and Diana met in the archives and discussed Themyscira's history, where Diana was intrigued at Clio's implications that Themyscira's recorded history was imperfect; Diana tried to recover a missing text for Clio, searching the island and the ocean around it, finding the missing text hidden in an undersea cavern, and brought it back to Clio, where they discovered that several pages had been torn out. The pages had been enchanted by the witch Circe in order to discourage truth-seekers and caused Diana to grow obsessed with them; concerned, Clio attempted to take the pages away from her but accidentally ripped them, releasing the magic bound within them and possessing Clio. The mystery was later resolved when Hellene, Themyscira's former Scribe, revealed to Clio and Diana that she had torn the pages and hidden the text to gain prestige, and that Queen Hippolyta had originally ordered the book hidden. Afterwards, Clio and Diana participated in the Amazonian games for the first time together. Clio continues to appear as part of Themyscira's scholarly caste in recent Wonder Woman and Nubia-centric storylines.

Appearance: Athletic build; wears standard Greco-Roman Amazonian armor/tunic of the era and Bracelets of Submission; blonde with short bobbed hair and gray eyes.
Personality: Inventive, hardworking, and dedicated to science and serving her people; her work was entirely focused on supporting Wonder Woman and the Amazons through technological means.
Powers and Abilities:
Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman strength, durability, stamina, and agility; immortality (while on the island). Scientific genius/inventiveness: Her key, defining ability. Amazonian Training: Basic combat skills typical of all Amazons (archery, hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship).
Equipment: Various devices and Paradise Island technologies of her own invention, created to assist Wonder Woman and the Amazons; a specific list of artifacts is not detailed in available sources.
Relationships:
Wonder Woman / Diana: For whom Alpha created numerous devices. Amazons of Paradise Island: Colleagues whom she assisted with her inventions.
History: A minor Amazon from the classic (Pre-Crisis) era, introduced as a scientist on Paradise Island. One of Professor Alpha's major scientific achievements was the invention of an interdimensional transporter that could transport the user to an alternate world she named "Dimension X"; she enlisted Wonder Woman's help to test this device in Wonder Woman #100 (1958).
- #25Hellene
Keys: Hellene
name: Hellene
species: Amazon (Themysciran)
nationality: Themysciran
gender: Female
titles: Senator (current); formerly Scribe of the Themysciran Library; in Wonder Woman Historia continuity — Queen of Athena's tribe of Amazons (first generation)
appearance: Race-lifted in modern Prime Earth depiction — changed from a blonde-haired white Amazon (George Pérez's original 1980s version) to a black woman. Athletic Amazonian build typical of Themysciran warriors; depicted in scribe's attire during her library tenure, later senatorial dress befitting her political role.
personality: Torn between duty and conscience — unable to bring herself to destroy a historically important text even under direct royal order, showing a reflective, principled nature. Described as having made a "deal with the devil" by allowing Circe to take the texts rather than destroy them, suggesting pragmatism mixed with guilt. Ambitious in her later life, as she was revealed to have torn pages from Themyscira's history and hidden them in an attempt to gain prestige among her fellow Amazons — a choice that left her vulnerable to Circe's manipulations. Ultimately politically capable, rising to the rank of Senator.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology (Prime Earth, implied standard Amazon traits): Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality.
- Political Science — her defining listed ability in her senatorial role.
- In Wonder Woman Historia continuity (as Queen Hellene, first generation): Leadership; Amazonian Training honed by gifts from Athena and Artemis, including Archery, Equestrianism, Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced), and Swordsmanship.
equipment: No unique signature artifact recorded; access to the Themysciran Library's texts and archives during her scribe tenure.
relationships:
- Clio — her successor as Scribe; the day-to-day running of the library fell to Clio after Hellene progressed to a senatorial role.
- Queen Hippolyta — her queen, who ordered her to destroy Aphrodite's book documenting the bloody revolt against Hercules in an attempt to cover up Themyscira's violent founding; later revealed that Hippolyta had ordered Hellene to hide the book in the first place.
- Circe — the witch to whom Hellene gave the forbidden text rather than destroying it, a choice that left her vulnerable to the sorceress's manipulations.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — confronted by Hellene and Clio together when the truth of the hidden text was finally revealed.
- In Wonder Woman Historia: part of the first generation of Amazons, chosen to be Queen of Athena's specific tribe among the founding Amazon peoples.
history: Hellene originally served as Scribe in the Themysciran Library. During her service, Queen Hippolyta requested that she destroy a book written by Aphrodite documenting the bloody revolt she led against Hercules, in an attempt to cover up the violent founding of Themyscira. Unable to bring herself to destroy the book, Hellene instead allowed the witch Circe to hide it away. She later progressed to a senatorial role, with day-to-day running of the library falling to her successor, Clio.
Years later, when Diana and Clio sought to recover the lost text, Hellene revealed to them that she had torn the pages out and hidden the text herself, attempting to gain prestige among her fellow Amazons — a decision that had left her vulnerable to Circe's manipulations. She also revealed that it was Hippolyta who had originally ordered the book hidden rather than destroyed, adding a layer of political cover-up to the island's history.
- #26Fara
Keys: Fara
name: Fara
species: Themysciran Amazon; later turned into a vampire by Cain.
nationality: Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: Amazon warrior; Cain’s guide and lieutenant during his campaign against Themyscira. No royal title.
appearance: Tall, muscular, dark-skinned woman with black hair pulled into a high ponytail, closely cropped at the sides. Her eyes are listed as brown before her transformation; as a vampire, she is drawn with red eyes, visible fangs and a sometimes grey-blue cast to her skin. She wears Amazonian battle attire with arm guards and red-and-gold armor details. An unofficial profile gives her height as approximately 6 ft (183 cm); this is not a confirmed DC measurement.
personality: Before her transformation, she was devoted enough to Exoristos to leave Themyscira and seek a way to end her friend’s exile. Under Cain’s control, she became hostile to her former sisters and used her knowledge of them to help his invasion. The story does not establish that she willingly betrayed the Amazons before becoming a vampire.
powers and abilities: Amazonian strength, speed, durability and armed and unarmed combat training; Amazonian agelessness did not make her impossible to kill. Vampirism added fangs, a need for blood and further physical enhancement. She knew Themyscira’s defenses and customs. Cain’s more unusual powers—such as transforming into a flock of birds—are not shown to be Fara’s.
equipment: Amazonian battle armor and arm guards. No named weapon or personal magical artifact is established.
relationships: Exoristos — close friend whose exile prompted Fara to leave the island; a romance is not confirmed. Cain — the vampire who turned and controlled her. Hippolyta — her former queen, whom she attacked during the invasion. The Amazons of Themyscira — her former sisters-in-arms.
history: Fara lived on Themyscira before Exoristos was exiled. She went into the outside world hoping to find Exoristos and persuade Hippolyta to restore her standing, but Cain turned her into a vampire. In 1043 CE, Fara helped lead his growing undead army toward Themyscira and advised him on how to attack the Amazons. Cain’s forces reached the island, where Fara fought her former queen. She was decapitated and killed during the battle; Cain’s invasion failed. Her story runs through Demon Knights #16–19 (2013), beginning with her first appearance in #16.
- #27Exoristos
Keys: Exoristos
name: Exoristos
species: Themysciran Amazon; exiled from Paradise Island.
nationality: Themysciran. Wandered Europe during the Dark Ages; no national citizenship established.
gender: Female.
titles: Exoristos ("Exiled" in Greek — both her name and her condition); founding member of the Demon Knights. No royal or military title within Themyscira is established. Her alias is simply Ex.
appearance: Tall, extremely muscular and chiseled Amazonian physique — one of the most physically imposing members of the Demon Knights. Black hair, green eyes. Her revealing Amazonian battle armor is noted in-story; a young girl she rescued commented that she dressed "like a tart." No fixed civilian clothing is established.
personality: Bold, fierce, and confrontational — defends strangers without hesitation. Carries deep guilt: first for whatever act led to her exile, and second for indirectly causing the death of a young girl named Audie. She seeks redemption through heroic action, making her a classic atoner figure. Openly attracted to Sir Ystin/Shining Knight, whose fluid gender identity she accepts without judgment; queer.
powers and abilities:
- Full Amazonian physiology: superhuman strength, durability, stamina, agility, immortality; can be killed.
- Advanced hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship at peak Amazon warrior level.
- Knowledge of Themysciran customs and defenses — used against Cain's invasion.
- No magical powers of her own established.
equipment: Amazonian battle armor and weapons. No named personal artifact or signature weapon.
relationships:
- Fara — closest friend; Fara left Themyscira to find Exoristos and restore her standing, only to be turned into a vampire by Cain and killed during the battle on Themyscira.
- Hippolyta — former queen who exiled her; Exoristos sought to prove her worth.
- Sir Ystin/Shining Knight — romantic interest; Ystin is both male and female, and Exoristos openly professed attraction to them.
- Etrigan, Madame Xanadu, Vandal Savage, Al Jabr, Horsewoman — fellow Demon Knights.
- Audie — a young girl she befriended and whose death she blamed herself for.
- Cain — antagonist who turned Fara into a vampire.
history: An Amazon of some renown on Themyscira before her exile. The specific crime that led to her banishment is never explicitly revealed in the comics; she carried the guilt of it throughout her wandering years. Her name, Exoristos, is Greek for "exiled."
During the Dark Ages, she was traveling through Europe when she defended Al Jabr in a tavern and was swept up in the battle for the village of Little Spring, where the Questing Queen and Mordru were leading a massive horde toward the city of Alba Sarum. She joined Jason Blood, Madame Xanadu, Vandal Savage, Sir Ystin and Al Jabr and the Horsewoman — the group that would become known as the Demon Knights — to defend Little Spring. She befriended a young girl named Audie and sent her over the town wall to seek help; Audie was killed by the Questing Queen's spy and her head displayed on a pike. Exoristos was devastated and driven to fight harder as a result.
After Little Spring was saved, the Demon Knights moved on and battled Morgaine Le Fay and later Lucifer himself. In Demon Knights #16–19, Cain led a vampire army toward Themyscira; Exoristos and her allies raced there to warn and defend the island. During the battle, she discovered that Fara — her closest friend, who had left Themyscira to find her — had been turned into a vampire. Fara was killed in the fighting. Sir Ystin was willingly bitten by Cain in pursuit of the Holy Grail. After the series concluded with Demon Knights #23 (2013), Exoristos has not reappeared in confirmed Prime Earth stories. She was featured in DC Comics: Generations (2021) and appears in New History of the DC Universe (2025–present), suggesting she remains part of current continuity.
- #28Cain
Keys: Cain
name: Cain
Note on continuity: Prime Earth features two distinct versions of Cain: the vampire Cain (I, Vampire / Demon Knights) and the House of Mystery Cain (brother of Abel, keeper of the House of Mystery, tied to the Sandman mythos). This profile covers the vampire Cain, who is the one directly connected to Exoristos and the Amazons of Themyscira.
species: Cursed human; the first vampire and progenitor of all vampires. Biblical figure transformed by the Mark of Cain and a chance encounter with Lilith.
nationality: Biblical/pre-national. No country of origin. Wandered Europe for millennia.
gender: Male.
titles: The First Vampire; Father of All Vampires; the First Murderer. No royal title — though he effectively ruled as a monstrous monarch alongside Lilith for a time. Later commander of Mary Queen of Blood's sunlight-tolerant vampire army.
appearance: Pale, gaunt and imposing; depicted as a tall, ancient-looking man with long dark hair, pale skin and the bearing of a predator. He described himself as "a vampire as old as God himself." His exact eye color and fixed costume are not consistently established. In Demon Knights he appears in dark, medieval-era clothing; in I, Vampire he wears a contemporary look. He can transform into a flock of ravens to escape.
personality: Cold, calculating and ruthlessly ambitious. A dark primordial evil who became the first vampire and spread his cruelty. Patient across centuries; assembles armies through manipulation and force. Regards vampirism as a means of conquest rather than survival. No remorse for the original murder of Abel; carries his curse as a badge of power.
powers and abilities:
- As the father of all vampires, Cain possesses all the powers they process but stronger, as he is the original, the source. He is also a capable wizard, able to siphon off the power of other magic users to add to his own.
- Superhuman strength, speed, durability, endurance; immortality — he cannot be killed by conventional means.
- Vampiric bite: turns victims into vampires under his thrall; turned Fara and Sir Ystin/Shining Knight.
- Can retreat by transforming into a flock of ravens.
- Sunlight tolerance not clearly established for his base form; he took command of Mary Queen of Blood's sunlight-tolerant vampire army.
- Magic absorption: Cain used magic he had stolen to remove vampiric weaknesses, making his army supremely powerful.
- Cursed by God with the Mark of Cain: the original mark rendered him impossible to destroy permanently.
equipment: No personal named weapon or artifact. Commands vampire armies and exploits stolen magic. His greatest weapon is his bite and his near-unkillable nature.
relationships:
- Abel — brother whom Cain murdered; the act that triggered his curse and transformation.
- Lilith — ancient companion; after turning hundreds to their vampiric children, Cain and Lilith came across a cult of vampire hunters; when she succumbed to her rage and loss, Lilith transformed into the first beast.
- Order of the Van Helsings — vampire hunters whose order was founded by survivors of his early attacks.
- Andrew Bennett — Cain was the vampire who turned Andrew Bennett, mistaking his passion for Mary as lust; because he was innocent, Bennett was able to control his bloodlust.
- Mary, Queen of Blood — Cain took up command of her sunlight-tolerant vampiric army.
- Fara — Amazon whom he turned into a vampire and used as his guide and lieutenant against Themyscira.
- Sir Ystin/Shining Knight — bitten willingly by Ystin in pursuit of the Holy Grail; Cain's bite was part of their destiny arc.
- Demon Knights — his primary antagonists: Exoristos, Jason Blood/Etrigan, Madame Xanadu, Vandal Savage, Al Jabr, Horsewoman, Sir Ystin.
- Lucifer — insisted Jason Blood return to Earth because should Cain rule the Earth, there would be no more souls for him to collect.
- Justice League Dark — opposed him during the Rise of the Vampires crossover.
history: Given the Mark of Cain for his murder of his brother Abel, Cain lost his memory. Wandering in a desert, he came across a dying woman also cast from Heaven, and found himself with a need to feed upon her. He also became stronger as a result of feeding. After turning hundreds to their vampiric children, Cain and Lilith came across a cult of vampire hunters. When she succumbed to her rage and loss, Lilith transformed into the first beast. Though they thought they killed all the vampire hunters, enough survived to found the Order of the Van Helsings. After a time of living like monstrous monarchs, they were met by a demon who had come to take back the power that they had got. Though he could not be killed, the Demon took the souls of all of those he had turned, including Lilith. He was promised that if he fed just once upon a truly innocent soul, he would be cursed to spend his days locked in a vacuum of nothingness, eternally. During the Dark Ages, Cain attempted to make his way across Europe with a vampiric horde in the hopes of turning the Amazons of Themyscira into vampires and create an unstoppable undead army. He was repelled in his efforts by the Demon Knights, but not before the Shining Knight was bitten. During this campaign he turned Fara — an Amazon who left Themyscira to find her friend Exoristos — and used her as his guide and lieutenant. As Cain's siege on Themyscira raged, the Demon Knights appeared and Shining Knight approached Cain and, meeting her destiny, allowed Cain to bite her. Jason Blood returned Etrigan to Hell and Lucifer imbued him with more power, which allowed the knights and the Amazon defenses to defeat Cain's army. Cain retreated, taking the form of a flock of ravens. Later, it was explained that Cain is a dark primordial evil who became the first vampire and spread his cruelty until the Demon Knights imprisoned him inside Bennett. Cain used the magic he had stolen to remove vampiric weaknesses, making them all supremely powerful. Xanadu balanced the scales by diverting Cain's power into Bennett. Mary teamed up with the Justice League Dark and they attacked Cain, but he was vastly more powerful than all of them combined. The Rise of the Vampires crossover (I, Vampire #8–9 / Justice League Dark #8–9, 2012) ended with Cain's defeat and imprisonment.
- #29Areto
Keys: Areto
name: Areto
species: Themysciran Amazon.
nationality: Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: Astronomy teacher to the younger Amazons; head of the astronomical observatory of Paradise Island; member of the Council of Themyscira. No royal or military title established.
appearance: Exact skin tone, hair color, eye color, height, build and fixed costume are not reliably established in available Prime Earth sources. Wears standard Themysciran attire.
personality: Observant and duty-minded. She takes her role as teacher and council member seriously — it was during one of her classes that Princess Diana and her classmates saw the burning plane with Steve Trevor and his companions falling on the shores of the island, and Areto realized that her hidden people had been discovered. Cautious and protective of Themysciran secrecy; she opposed sending an Amazon to Man's World but fulfilled her duty once the decision was made.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality; Amazonian Training aided by the gifts of Athena and Artemis.
- Astronomy, science, education and pedagogy; Council governance and diplomacy.
equipment: No named weapon or personal magical artifact established. Uses the astronomical observatory as her primary domain.
relationships: Diana — a student during her astronomy class; Hippolyta — her queen and fellow council member; Steve Trevor — the outsider whose crash she first identified; fellow Council members and Amazons of Themyscira.
history: Areto was first adapted by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner, first appearing in Ame-Comi Girls: Featuring Wonder Woman #1; however, in Prime Earth continuity she first appeared as part of the New 52 DC Universe in Wonder Woman. She teaches astronomy to younger Amazons and is responsible for the astronomical observatory of Paradise Island, and is a member of the Council of Themyscira. It was Areto who identified the military character of the fallen men; although she had not agreed to send an Amazon with the sole survivor Steve to Man's World — because the chosen one would lose the right to immortality and never return to Themyscira — it was she who supervised the making of the suit with symbols and colors brought by the American soldiers, to be worn by the champion chosen in the contest that would select the Amazon ambassador. No further major Prime Earth story arcs or significant later appearances have been confirmed beyond her New 52 debut.
- #30Delphine
Keys: Delphine
name: Delphine
species: Themysciran Amazon; one of the five new Amazons that sprung from the Well of Souls in the modern era, centuries after Nubia, the current queen of the Amazons, who had been the last until then.

titles: Amazon warrior and sister of Themyscira. No royal or military title established.
appearance: Brown eyes, black hair. Athletic, youthful Amazonian build. Drawn by Alitha Martinez with warm, open features. Wears standard Themysciran Greek-inspired attire — tunic, armor details, Bracelets of Submission. No fixed signature costume or detailed physical measurements established beyond hair and eye color.
personality: Warm and open — as a newly reborn Amazon she started as a blank slate with no memories of a past life. She has a crush on Nubia. Not individually developed in depth due to her ensemble supporting role.
powers and abilities: Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality. Can still be killed. Standard Amazonian combat training: hand-to-hand, swordsmanship, archery, equestrianism, as well as arts and craftsmanship.

history: Delphine is one of the five new Amazons that sprung from the Well of Souls in the modern era. She has 9 confirmed appearances in Prime Earth continuity. She appeared across all six issues of Nubia and the Amazons, in Trial of the Amazons and in Wonder Woman. No confirmed individual story arc of her own beyond her recurring background presence during Nubia's reign.
- #31Medusa (also Medousa)
Keys: Medousa, Medusa
name: Medusa (also Medousa)
species: Gorgon; one of the Gorgon sisters of ancient times. She was the only mortal among the Gorgon sisters, not possessing golden wings and claws like the others.
nationality: Ancient Greek/pre-national origin; currently based on Themyscira.
gender: Female.
titles: Gorgon; Queen of Gorgons; Queen of Monsters; Medusa the Gorgon, repentant of her past mistakes and brought back to her human form by Queen Nubia — now honorary Amazon of Themyscira.
appearance: Since her debut in 1964, Medusa's physical appearance has been presented variously as DC Comics' continuities have shifted. Though she has routinely been depicted with snakes for hair, she has sometimes been shown as bipedal and sometimes with a serpentine lower body. In her Prime Earth Gorgon form: massive and serpentine. Most famously depicted as humanoid with golden wings, though the Nubia & the Amazons design by Alitha Martinez goes for a more traditional visual. Eyes: brown/white depending on form. Hair: brown or no hair (snakes). As a spirit, she reappears as a green, gaseous essence. In her restored human form after reconciliation: depicted in simple clothing (toga/towel in Nubia & the Amazons #5).
personality: Across continuities, she has consistently been written with the ghostly ability to possess or influence other beings after her physical body has been killed, as well as an uncanny capacity for resurrection after death. Her characterization has been that of a dangerous immortal creature who is at turns both vengeful and sympathetic. Deeply wounded by Athena's unjust curse; her rage stems from being victimized rather than innate evil. Capable of genuine remorse and change.
powers and abilities:
- Gorgon with hair made of snakes, and a gaze that turns men to stone.
- Divine Empowerment: Initially as part of Athena's curse and later as a blessing for being accepted among the Amazons of Themyscira, Medusa gained some divine gifts — Immortality, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Strength.
- Acidic venom; flight (in winged form); expert combatant; genesistic blood (Pegasus was born from it); transformative tears.
- In spirit form: possession — able to hop from body to body. When she took over the body of another Amazon, the body of her previous host turned to stone.
equipment: No personal named weapon or artifact. Her severed head retains petrification power and was held by Hippolyta. No fixed armor or costume.
relationships:
- Relatives: Gaia (grandmother), Pontus (grandfather), Ceto (mother), Phorcys (father), Gorgons (sisters), Falchion and Pegasus (sons).
- Euryale and Stheno — her Gorgon sisters.
- Poseidon — she unwillingly attracted his desire; he seduced her.
- Athena — jealously cursed Medusa, turning her into a serpentine monster with the power to petrify anyone who looks at her.
- Nubia — primary reconciler; a heartfelt flashback shows Nubia had once found kinship with Medusa during a brief romance in 1970s Chicago.
- Andromeda — Medusa possessed her body while searching the island for her lost head and revealed Andromeda's memories of her past life to her.
- Batwoman and Wonder Woman — primary antagonists during the New 52 arc.
- Hippolyta — her head came into the possession of Queen Hippolyta.
- Ceto — mother whom Medusa tried to free from the sea floor.
history: She was the only mortal among the Gorgon sisters. She was considered the most beautiful, having unwillingly attracted the desire of Poseidon, who seduced her. This attracted the attention of the goddess Athena, who jealously cursed Medusa, turning her into a serpentine monster with the power to petrify anyone who looks at her. In the 21st Century (New 52), she created a network bearing her name in order to free her mother Ceto from the bottom of the sea near Gotham City. The organization came into conflict with Batwoman, who enlisted the aid of Wonder Woman. Medusa ended up dying by petrifying herself by looking at her own reflection in a shard of mirror held by Batwoman. Medusa spent certain periods of her immortal life as a prisoner in Tartarus. Early into Nubia's reign, Doom's Doorway was no longer watched by a dedicated Guardian — the spirit of Medusa escaped the Doorway and possessed several Amazons as she searched for her severed head. Eventually Nubia tracked down Medusa to Doom's Doorway and offered her head in exchange for the safety of the Amazon Medusa had possessed. With her head returned to her body, Medusa was restored to her full strength and battled Nubia but was eventually defeated by the Staff of Understanding. With the use of the Staff, Nubia was able to reconcile with Medusa, lifting her curse that turned her into a Gorgon, and accepted her as a new Amazon. That same power caused Medusa to return to her human form and, regretting her past mistakes, she was welcomed by Queen Nubia as an Amazon on Themyscira. No further confirmed major Prime Earth story arcs beyond her inclusion in the Themysciran Amazon community.
- #32Castalia
Keys: Castalia

Wears standard Themysciran priestess/counselor attire. Depicted as a mature, dignified Amazon in a priestess role rather than a battle-focused warrior.
personality: Dutiful, grave and attentive to omens; she takes her role as priestess and interpreter of signs seriously. While Queen Hippolyta waited for Wonder Woman to return home, the priestess Castalia brought dire, black news: an omen — the withered tree — had once again appeared on the island, and the Amazons must prepare for war. Measured, respectful and loyal to the Crown.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman Strength, Durability, Stamina, Agility; Immortality; can still be killed.

Fellow Amazons of Themyscira — Philippus, Menalippe, Io, Clio, Hellene and others on the Council. Nubia — queen whom she continued to serve.
history: Castalia is one of the Amazons of Themyscira; she is a member of the Council of Themyscira and serves as an Amazon priestess and interpreter. During the Truth storyline, she brought Hippolyta the ominous sign of the withered tree, warning that the Amazons must prepare for war. Castalia also appears in the newer Wonder Woman Year One DC Go! Edition (2025–present). She remains a recurring background priestess-counselor on Themyscira with no confirmed individual major story arc of her own.

During Nubia's early reign, when Medusa's spirit escaped Doom's Doorway and began possessing Amazons in search of her severed head, Medusa took over Andromeda's body — and in doing so revealed to Andromeda the memories of her past life as Ms. Knight, a woman Nubia had loved during a brief romance in 1970s Chicago. Nubia tracked Medusa to Doom's Doorway and offered the Gorgon's head in exchange for Andromeda's safety; Medusa was eventually defeated and reconciled through the Staff of Understanding. nationality: Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: Amazon architect; formerly, in New Earth continuity, Amazon sculptor. No royal, oracle, or military title confirmed.
appearance: In Prime Earth, Iphthime has auburn hair and blue eyes; available art shows her as an adult Amazon with a fit athletic build, light/fair skin, and standard Themysciran clothing/armor rather than a unique superhero costume. Her exact height, weight, eye-shape, facial details, and permanent outfit colors are not officially fixed. In older New Earth art/profiles, her hair is listed as red/brown, so do not mix that as a stable Prime Earth trait.
personality: Distrustful of Man’s World and politically conservative by Themysciran standards; she is critical of Nubia becoming queen after Hippolyta’s abdication. New Earth additionally presents her as a hardliner capable of acting against reconciliation when fear and anger dominate her judgment.
powers and abilities: Standard Amazonian physiology: superhuman strength, durability, stamina, agility, and immortality/agelessness, though she can still be killed. Prime Earth specialty: architecture. New Earth specialty: sculpture/artistry plus standard Amazon training in archery, equestrianism, hand-to-hand combat, and swordsmanship.
equipment: No named weapon, lasso, armor, or magical artifact confirmed. Uses standard Themysciran Amazon equipment when needed.
relationships: Nubia — her queen, whose rule Iphthime openly questions in Prime Earth. Hippolyta — former queen whose abdication sets the context for Iphthime’s criticism. Amazons of Themyscira — her people. New Earth only: Hellene was her former lover; Anaya of the Bana-Mighdall was later her lover, but their relationship broke after Iphthime sided with Aella’s hardliners.
history: Iphthime is Themyscira's chief healer, a role she has held across continuities. In New Earth continuity, she was created by George Pérez and debuted in his Wonder Woman run; she lost her lover Hellene during the War of the Gods crossover (1991). Her Prime Earth appearances continue her role as the island's head physician, tending to wounded Amazons and to Diana after battles. No confirmed major individual Prime Earth story arc of her own; she remains a recurring background healer figure on Themyscira. Specific Prime Earth issue debut and detailed appearances beyond her supporting role have not been reliably verified in available sources.
- #35Fury (Helena Kosmatos)
Keys: Helena Kosmatos, Fury
name: Helena Kosmatos (alias: Fury, the Original Fury)
species: Human; host and vessel of the ancient Greek Fury Tisiphone, one of the three Erinyes. Not an Amazon by birth, though she has close ties to Wonder Woman's world.
nationality: Greek, born in Athens.
gender: Female.
titles: The Fury; the Original Fury; member of the All-Star Squadron; member of the Young All-Stars; mother of Lyta Trevor, the second Fury.
appearance: Golden-blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin, athletic warrior's build. Classic look: green dress or tunic with cape and headband. In later depictions, a darker, more militaristic armored costume with red and black palette — armor plating, cape and sword — gives her a fierce Amazon-influenced warrior aesthetic. In civilian form, a young Greek woman; when channeling Tisiphone, her appearance becomes savage, with glowing eyes and feral demeanor.
personality: Fierce, driven by vengeance and justice. Haunted by the loss of her family, which shaped her into a warrior; the Tisiphone spirit within her amplifies her rage. Carries deep internal conflict between her human conscience and the Fury's wrath. Loyal to those who earn her trust; brutal to those who harm the innocent. In her youth as a weapon raised by Steppenwolf, she was cold and militant before her conscience led her to turn against Apokolips.
powers and abilities:
- Possession by Tisiphone grants superhuman strength, speed, durability, stamina and combat ferocity.
- Can channel the Fury's wrath to amplify her physical abilities to monstrous levels.
- Expert hand-to-hand combatant; skilled in swordsmanship and weaponry.
- Flight in some depictions.
- Energy manipulation and projection.
- Longevity — survived from World War II into the modern era.
- Peak martial training from her upbringing by Steppenwolf as an Apokoliptian warrior.
equipment: Sword and warrior's armor. No single consistent signature weapon across her appearances; relies primarily on her enhanced physical abilities and combat skill.
relationships:
- Tisiphone — the Greek Fury who possesses her and grants her powers.
- Lyta Trevor (Fury II) — her daughter; later married Hector Hall and became associated with the Sandman mythos as the mother of Daniel Hall.
- Wonder Woman — close ally and fellow heroine; occasionally depicted as an adoptive mother figure to Lyta.
- Steve Trevor — father of Lyta.
- All-Star Squadron — WWII-era superhero team she served with.
- Young All-Stars — team she joined later.
- Steppenwolf — abusive father-figure who raised her as a weapon; she ultimately turned against him.
- Val-Zod, Power Girl, Huntress (Helena Wayne), Red Tornado — allies among the Wonders.
- Mother — killed by Nazis during World War II, which drove Helena to invoke the Furies for vengeance.
history: Helena Kosmatos was a young Greek woman during World War II whose family was killed by Nazi occupiers. Seeking vengeance, she invoked the ancient Greek Furies and became the host of Tisiphone, gaining superhuman powers to fight the Axis. She joined the All-Star Squadron and later the Young All-Stars during the war, becoming one of the most feared heroines of her era.
After the war, she became the mother of Lyta Trevor, the second Fury, who later married Hector Hall and became a prominent figure in the Sandman mythos as the mother of Daniel Hall.
In another chapter of her life, Fury was raised as a daughter of Steppenwolf of Apokolips, trained from childhood as his enforcer. She served the forces of Apokolips during the invasion of her world but eventually turned against her father and joined its defenders. Alongside Val-Zod, Power Girl, Huntress and the other Wonders, she fought to protect humanity from the Apokoliptian conquest and the collapse of her homeworld.
She remains one of the oldest and most formidable female warriors in the broader DC pantheon, defined by her dual heritage: a mortal Greek woman and a vessel of divine vengeance.
- #36Bia
Keys: Bia
name: Bia
species: Themysciran Amazon; one of the five new Amazons that sprung from the Well of Souls in the modern era during Queen Nubia's reign.

appearance: Light brown skin, brown eyes, dark brown hair worn short or in a close-cropped style. Athletic Amazonian build. Drawn by Alitha Martinez with warm, open features and a youthful, kind expression. Wears standard Themysciran Greek-inspired attire — tunic, armor details, Bracelets of Submission.
personality: Warm, curious and friendly. As a newly reborn Amazon, she started without memory of a past life — a blank slate eager to learn and bond with her new sisters. Shows kindness toward Diana during her mystical rituals and acts as a supportive presence among the younger generation of Amazons.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman Strength, Durability, Stamina, Agility; Immortality; can still be killed.
- Standard Amazonian combat training: hand-to-hand, swordsmanship, archery, equestrianism; also educated in arts and craftsmanship as part of new Amazon training.
- Participates in Themysciran mystical rites as part of the island's spiritual community.
- No unique individual power or signature combat feat established beyond baseline Amazon abilities.
equipment: Standard Themysciran Amazon weapons and armor. No named personal artifact or signature weapon established.
relationships:
- Nubia — her queen, who presided over her rebirth from the Well.
- Delphine, Karessi, Andromeda — fellow newly reborn sisters from the Well.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — princess she helped attend during a mystical sleeping ritual, alongside Magala and Penelope.
- Magala and Penelope — fellow Amazons with whom she took part in Diana's mystical ritual.
- Philippus, Io, Hellene, Clio, Zina, Mala — fellow Amazons of Themyscira.
- Hippolyta — former queen.
history: Bia is one of the five new Amazons that sprung from the Well of Souls in the modern era during Queen Nubia's reign. She was created by Stephanie Williams, Vita Ayala and Alitha Martinez, first appearing during the Nubia and the Amazons era. She appeared across the Nubia and the Amazons run, in Trial of the Amazons, and in subsequent Wonder Woman stories — most notably joining Magala and Penelope during Diana's mystical sleeping ritual in Wonder Woman #800. She remains a recurring background Amazon during Nubia's reign with no confirmed individual major story arc of her own.
- #37Orana
Keys: Orana
name: Orana
species: Themysciran Amazon.
nationality: Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: The Second Wonder Woman; Champion of the Amazons (briefly). Won the Contest to replace Diana as the Amazons' envoy to Man's World.
appearance: Red/auburn hair worn long, blue or green eyes, fair skin, athletic muscular Amazonian build, strong beautiful features with a fierce competitive expression. During her brief time as Wonder Woman, she wore a variant of the classic Wonder Woman costume — red bodice with golden eagle emblem, blue star-spangled briefs/skirt, red boots, Bracelets of Submission, and the golden tiara. In her Amazon warrior attire, standard Themysciran armor with hunter's accessories, often depicted with a bow or sword.
personality: Fiercely competitive, proud, ambitious and arrogant. Believed herself superior to Diana and sought to replace her as the Amazons' champion. Aggressive and headstrong — approached Man's World with the mentality of a warrior-huntress rather than a diplomat or protector. Dismissive of Diana's more compassionate methods; believed force and dominance were the proper tools of a Wonder Woman. Her overconfidence ultimately led to her downfall.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: Superhuman Strength, Durability, Stamina, Agility; Immortality (lost upon leaving Themyscira as the Amazons' envoy).
- Expert archer, huntress and tracker — one of the finest hunters among the Amazons.
- Advanced hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship, spear and bow proficiency, equestrianism.
- Won the Amazonian Contest, demonstrating peak Amazon warrior ability — defeated all other competitors including Diana in some rounds.
- Lacked Diana's experience in Man's World tactics, strategy and the use of the Lasso of Truth.
equipment: Wonder Woman costume (red/gold/blue). Bracelets of Submission. Golden tiara (usable as a throwing weapon). Lasso of Truth (briefly, during her tenure as Wonder Woman). Bow and arrows (her preferred personal weapon). Amazon sword and armor.
relationships:
- Diana / Wonder Woman — primary rival; defeated Diana in a new Contest to replace her as Wonder Woman. Diana later mourned her death and reclaimed the mantle.
- Hippolyta — her queen, who presided over the Contest.
- Steve Trevor — Diana's love interest, whom Orana met briefly during her tenure.
- Fellow Amazons of Themyscira — admired by some, resented by others for her arrogance.
- Warhead — the villain whose attack led to her death during her very first mission as Wonder Woman.
history: Orana was an ambitious Amazon warrior who believed she could serve as a better Wonder Woman than Diana. When a new Contest was held to determine who would represent the Amazons in Man's World, Orana competed and won — defeating Diana and claiming the title of Wonder Woman along with the costume, tiara, bracelets and Lasso.
Taking up the mantle, Orana set out into Man's World to prove her superiority. However, her aggressive, warrior-first approach was poorly suited to the complex challenges of modern heroism. On her very first mission, she confronted the villain Warhead and was killed in battle — her Amazon prowess and immortality insufficient against Man's World dangers she was unprepared for.
Her death was a sobering moment for the Amazons and for Diana, who reclaimed the mantle of Wonder Woman. Orana's story serves as a cautionary tale about the difference between being the strongest warrior and being the right champion — Diana's wisdom, compassion and experience in Man's World were qualities that pure combat skill could not replace.
Orana has primarily appeared in older continuity stories and has not had a significant confirmed presence in the current main DC continuity. She remains a memorable figure in Wonder Woman lore as the Amazon who briefly took the title — and paid the ultimate price for her ambition.
- #38Penthesilea
Keys: Penthesilea
name: Penthesilea; DC also spells her Penthiselea, with rare variants Panthesila/Panthesliea.
species: Amazon; best-documented comics version is a Bana-Mighdall Amazon.
nationality: Bana-Mighdall / Amazon; other DC retellings portray her as Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: Amazon captain; in another DC retelling, Queen Penthesilea of the Tribe of Demeter; no stable current royal title confirmed.
appearance: Main comics version: black hair, athletic Amazon warrior build; exact eye color, skin tone, height, and fixed costume are not officially detailed. She is associated with standard Amazon/Bana battle gear and a sword. Other DC portrayals vary: one version has blonde hair and blue eyes; the Historia version is drawn as a queenly first-generation Amazon with ornate tribe-specific regalia tied to Demeter.
personality: Brave, martial, commanding, and battle-focused. She is characterized more as a legendary warrior-leader than as a deeply developed individual character; most versions emphasize courage, military discipline, and tragic heroism.
powers and abilities: Amazonian physiology: enhanced intellect, superhuman strength, durability, stamina, agility, immortality/agelessness depending on version, and possible self-sustenance on Themyscira. Bana-Mighdall versions can lose true immortality after separation from Themyscira. Skilled in archery, equestrianism, advanced hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship, leadership, and military protocol.
equipment: Sword; standard Amazon armor and weapons. No personal lasso, named sword, divine artifact, or unique armor is confirmed for her.
relationships: Main comics version: daughter of Phthia and Melanippus; granddaughter of Hypsipyle, Jason, and Theseus; affiliated with the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall; killed by Achilles during the Trojan War. Other retellings make her sister of Hippolyta, Antiope, Melanippe, and Glauce, and aunt of Diana.
history: Penthesilea was a mighty Amazon captain of Bana-Mighdall who fought in the Trojan War. She stood at the front of the Amazon forces against the Greek army, fought the columns led by Captain Eteocles, and was eventually killed by Achilles. In another Wonder Woman retelling, she is one of Hippolyta’s sisters and dies during the attack involving Heracles, Theseus, and Achilles. In Wonder Woman Historia, she is reimagined as one of the first Amazons and Queen of the Tribe of Demeter, alongside other founding Amazon queens.
- #39Karessi
Keys: Karessi
name: Karessi
species: Themysciran Amazon; reborn from the Well of Souls.
nationality: Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: Amazon sister of Themyscira; artisan / weaponsmith assistant in Io’s workshop. No royal, oracle, or military title confirmed.
appearance: Brown eyes, brown hair, brown/tan skin, tall athletic Amazonian build; she is stated to be the tallest among the five new Amazons reborn with Andromeda, Bia, Delphine, and Zina. Based on available art, she has a strong, statuesque frame and wears standard Themysciran clothing/armor rather than a fixed superhero costume: Greek-inspired Amazon attire, bracers, sandals/boots, and workshop-ready practical styling. No official height, weight, fixed hairstyle, or permanent costume colors are established.
personality: Creative, skilled with her hands, proud, and emotionally reactive under stress. She stands out more as an artisan than as a front-line warrior; during the inter-tribal tensions, she becomes visibly angry when almost struck by an arrow and ignored, but that scene is tied to the wider Doom’s Doorway disturbance rather than simple personal malice.
powers and abilities: Amazonian physiology: superhuman strength, durability, stamina, agility, and immortality/agelessness, though she can still be killed. Trained in advanced hand-to-hand combat. Skilled artisan: she impressed Io by modeling a shield in clay, and later worked as a weaponsmith assistant in Io’s workshop.
equipment: Standard Themysciran clothing, bracers, armor, and possible Amazon weapons when required. No named personal weapon, lasso, magical artifact, or unique armor confirmed.
relationships: Nubia — her queen; Io — mentor/workshop lead, impressed by Karessi’s craft skill; Andromeda, Bia, Delphine, and Zina — fellow new Amazons reborn from the Well; Philippus, Clio, Magala, Medusa, Mala, Penelope, and the other Themyscirans — Amazon sisters; Rhea and Yarmina — helped near Doom’s Doorway during the Trial period; Bana-Mighdall Amazons — tensions briefly rose between them and Karessi.
history: Karessi was one of five new Amazons born when the Well of Souls reopened after a long period without new arrivals. Like the others, she entered Themysciran life as a reborn soul without a fully remembered former identity. During early evaluations, she distinguished herself in Io’s workshop by shaping a clay shield impressive enough to mark her as a gifted craftswoman. She remained present through Nubia’s early reign, the Medusa crisis, and the Trial period. While delivering supplies and helping near Doom’s Doorway, she encountered a mysterious substance and became involved in a strange disturbance that escalated tensions between the Amazon tribes. Afterward, she continued serving among the Themyscirans, especially through Io’s workshop.
- #40Io
Keys: Io
name: Io
species: Themysciran Amazon.
nationality: Themysciran / Amazon.
gender: Female; lesbian.
titles: Chief blacksmith of Themyscira; Amazon weaponsmith; inventor; member of the Council of Themyscira; former contestant/finalist in the contest to choose the Amazon champion for Man’s World.
appearance: Athletic and muscular Amazonian build; blue eyes; hair is listed as red/black, with most modern images showing her as a red-haired Amazon. She has light skin in her main Themysciran depictions, strong facial features, and later loses her left eye while guarding Doom’s Doorway. Usually shown in practical Themysciran forge/work attire or Amazon armor: tunic/leather smithing gear, bracers, sandals/boots, and weapon-ready accessories rather than a fixed superhero costume.
personality: Skilled, loyal, practical, emotionally direct, and deeply devoted to her people. She is supportive rather than controlling: with Nubia, she anticipates her partner’s choices and forges tools that help her survive and protect Themyscira. She is also romantic and vulnerable, having had feelings for Diana before her later relationship with Nubia.
powers and abilities: Amazonian physiology: superhuman strength, durability, stamina, agility, and immortality/agelessness, though she can still be injured or killed. Advanced Amazon training: archery, equestrianism, hand-to-hand combat, swordsmanship. Master weaponsmith, blacksmith, armorer, artist, and inventor; creator/designer of major Themysciran devices such as the Purple Healing Ray. Her missing left eye is a lasting injury, not a power.
equipment: Labrys; standard Amazon weapons and armor; forge tools and Themysciran smithing equipment; Purple Healing Ray as her invention/operated device; forged the Staff of Understanding for Nubia, but it belongs to Nubia, not Io.
relationships: Nubia — lover/partner and queen; Diana — former crush and Amazon sister; Hippolyta — former queen; Philippus, Areto, Castalia, Epione, Sofia — council/sister Amazons; Karessi — later works in Io’s workshop; Clio — saved by Io through the Purple Healing Ray; Medusa — indirectly opposed during Nubia’s crisis through the weapon Io forged.
history: Io is Themyscira's master blacksmith and one of the most skilled artisans among the Amazons. She has forged countless weapons for her sisters over the millennia, imbuing each with the care and precision of a true master craftsman. Her role at the forge places her at the heart of Amazonian culture — every warrior relies on the arms she creates.
In Greg Rucka's celebrated Wonder Woman run, Io was portrayed as Diana's romantic interest, in a quietly profound relationship that made Diana's queerness canonical. Their bond was one of mutual respect, tenderness and deep understanding — Io loved Diana unconditionally, even as Diana's duty called her away.
In the modern era under Queen Nubia's reign, Io's great love became Nubia herself. Their relationship is one of the most emotionally resonant storylines in current Wonder Woman comics — Io forged the Staff of Understanding for Nubia, a weapon blessed by Athena, Aphrodite and Hestia that can function as a lasso of unlimited range, revealing truth and intention. The staff became Nubia's defining weapon as Queen of all Amazons.
During the crisis when Medusa's spirit escaped Doom's Doorway and possessed several Amazons, Io stood beside Nubia and helped recover Clio from Circe's influence. She continues to serve Themyscira as its chief blacksmith and as Nubia's partner — the quiet, steady presence behind the queen, both lover and armorer.
Io remains one of the most beloved supporting characters in Wonder Woman mythology, representing the heart, craft and love that sustains Themyscira beyond the battlefield.
- #41Barbara Ann Minerva
Keys: Barbara Ann Minerva, Cheetah
name: Barbara Ann Minerva; alias: Cheetah
species: Human turned into a demigod. The plant god Urzkartaga transformed her into a cheetah-like being.
nationality: English (British). She later lived and taught in the United States.
gender: Female.
titles: Cheetah; Dr. Barbara Minerva; archaeologist and university professor; Wonder Woman's archenemy; member of the Legion of Doom, the Suicide Squad and Checkmate at different times; for a short time "Queen Cheetah" of her own magical realm, Che-Terra.
appearance:
Human form: tall, slim woman, about 175 cm, with light skin. She has red or auburn hair, often cut to shoulder length, and green eyes. Her face is sharp and intelligent, and she sometimes wears glasses. She dresses like an academic or a field archaeologist: practical shirts, trousers, jackets and boots. Cheetah form: tall, lean and very muscular, with a feline body built for speed. Golden-yellow fur with black cheetah spots covers her whole body. She has a long mane of red hair, a cat-like face with a slight muzzle, glowing yellow-green slit-pupil eyes, sharp fangs, long razor-sharp claws on her hands and feet, and a long spotted tail. She usually wears no clothing because her fur covers her. Some artists add gold arm bands, neck jewelry or a loincloth. personality: Brilliant, proud, ambitious and obsessed with lost legends. She was originally warm and loyal, and loved Diana deeply. The curse made her a predator full of rage and bloodlust, forced to hunt and kill men. She is torn between hatred of Diana and lingering love for her, and between longing for a cure and enjoying her power. She is cunning, vengeful and fiercely independent. When she is free of the curse's hunger, she shows guilt and tragic humanity.
powers and abilities: Cheetah Physiology: through channeling the power of the plant god Urzkartaga, Barbara has become a demigod and acquired a cheetah-like humanoid physiology. Accelerated Healing: Barbara can heal from most wounds in only a few hours. Razor-sharp claws for cutting through flesh, capable of easily dismembering people and shattering metal. Fangs meant for cutting through flesh and bone; with her fangs, she can even pierce Superman's super-tough skin. Superhuman Speed: one of the fastest beings on the planet, considered even faster than Wonder Woman; she can run on walls and is fast enough to cut the Flash. Superhuman Durability: great resistance to injury; can be struck by Wonder Woman with enough power to create furrows on the battlefield and keep fighting. Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Agility, Enhanced Senses (hearing, smell). Magic bite can also transform others into Cheetah-like humanoids. Genius-level intellect: obtained two PhDs at the age of 26; can speak eight languages fluently and near-fluently in an additional seven. Hand-to-hand combat, stealth, tracking, predatory instincts. equipment: No permanent named weapon. She was given the mythical "God Killer", a sword able to kill even the strongest of the Olympian Gods — used during the Legion of Doom era; it is not her standard gear. Checkmate suit after partial cure. Claws and fangs are part of her body, not equipment.
relationships: Diana / Wonder Woman — a former ally; Barbara has never quite forgiven Wonder Woman for what she sees as the hero "abandoning" her after her transformation. In the years since, the two have been enemies, allies, and sometimes, something approaching friends. Etta Candy — former romantic partner; their relationship was destroyed by the curse. Veronica Cale — manipulator who funded and orchestrated Barbara's expedition to Urzkartaga; later captured and brainwashed her. Urzkartaga — the plant god who cursed/empowered her; Barbara was made his unwilling "bride." Sovereign — captured and marooned her on an island. Lex Luthor — recruited her into the Legion of Doom. Joker, Sinestro, Black Manta, Gorilla Grodd — Legion of Doom teammates. Steve Trevor — helped Diana free Barbara from Urzkartaga's curse. Doctor Cyber / Adrianna Anderson — Cale's operative who sabotaged Barbara's GPS beacon. Poseidon — sea god she hunted and killed as part of the Legion of Doom. Circe — fellow Wonder Woman villain; previously empowered Barbara's permanent transformation in older continuity.
history: Barbara Ann Minerva was a brilliant British archaeologist and anthropologist who became Diana's first true friend and language tutor in the outside world. After helping Diana settle into her role as Wonder Woman, Barbara was contacted by Veronica Cale, who offered to fund an expedition to Africa to investigate the plant god Urzkartaga. Diana gave her a GPS beacon, but Doctor Cyber deactivated it on Cale's orders and staged disasters to distract Wonder Woman. When Diana finally arrived, Urzkartaga had made Barbara his wife and transformed her into the Cheetah. With the help of Steve's forces, Diana and Cheetah were able to kill Urzkartaga, freeing Barbara from the curse. However, Barbara was unable to cope with the trauma and, pressured by Cale who threatened her friends' lives, she accepted the curse again and became Cheetah once more. Lex Luthor recruited Cheetah into his new Legion of Doom. She accompanied Luthor, the Joker, Sinestro, Black Manta, and Gorilla Grodd, and as a member hunted down and killed the sea god Poseidon. She was given the God Killer sword and used it against Aphrodite and Wonder Woman's patron deities. At some point, Cheetah was captured by Cale's company and brought to Brazil where she was brainwashed into becoming a feral creature. Wonder Woman rescued Cheetah and used her magic lasso to restore Barbara's intellect. With her humanity restored, Cheetah temporarily joined Checkmate to help Wonder Woman defeat Hera's forces. Soon after the United States government turned on the Amazons and formed the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.), Cheetah was captured by the mysterious Sovereign, the secretive king of America, and imprisoned on an unspecified island. The Sovereign's plan was for the two mortal enemies to fight each other to the death, with the expectation that Wonder Woman would emerge victorious and break down after killing Cheetah. Instead, Diana's expression of love inspired a reversal in Cheetah's aggression; the two reconciled on the island. Cheetah also appeared alongside Grail, Circe, Giganta, Silver Swan, and Doctor Psycho in the battle at the Washington Monument during the Sovereign's campaign against Wonder Woman. Barbara remains one of the most complex figures in Diana's life — simultaneously her greatest enemy and her most tragic friend, forever caught between the scholar she was and the predator she was cursed to become.
- #42Zina
Keys: Zina

personality: Warm, easygoing, and immediately drawn to her queen. She has a crush on Nubia since the moment the queen introduced herself. As a newly reborn Amazon, she started as a blank slate with no memory of her past life. Not deeply developed individually beyond her ensemble role and her noted skill in fishing.

She immediately developed a crush on Queen Nubia. Her individually distinguished skill among the new Amazons is fishing. She has 9 confirmed appearances across Nubia and the Amazons #1–6, Trial of the Amazons, Nubia: Queen of the Amazons, and Wonder Woman. No confirmed individual story arc of her own beyond her recurring supporting presence during Nubia's reign.
- #43Pythia
Keys: Pythia
name: Pythia
species: Themysciran Amazon. Pythia is an Amazon of Themyscira and the spiritual mother of Julia Kapatelis. In Wonder Woman Historia, she is reimagined as part of the first generation of Amazons and Queen of the Amazon tribe that was dedicated to Aphrodite.
nationality: Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: Amazon warrior; Lieutenant; spiritual mother / "Guardian of Inspiration" of Julia Kapatelis; in Wonder Woman Historia — Queen of the Amazons of Aphrodite. In older continuity, daughter of Antiope and niece of Hippolyta.
appearance: Blue eyes, white hair (New Earth profile). The Wonder Woman Historia version lists grey eyes, white hair. The silver-haired Pythia is her most consistent visual trait across all versions. Athletic Amazonian build, light/fair skin, dignified elder features. Wears standard Themysciran Greek-inspired attire — tunic, bracers, sandals, Amazon armor when needed. In Historia, she wears ornate queen's regalia associated with Aphrodite's tribe.
personality: Protective, selfless, spiritually devoted, and fiercely loyal. She volunteered to bless and protect a human infant when other Amazons did not, forming a psychic bond with the child. In combat, she is decisive and lethal when her loved ones are threatened. In Historia, she is presented as a regal, wise founding queen.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: the Amazons are a race of warrior women that have received gifts and blessings from five Olympian goddesses. Pythia possesses the same potential powers as an average Amazon — Enhanced Intellect, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality.
- Self-Sustenance: so long as Pythia stays on Themyscira, she does not require food, water or any other form of nourishment.
- Psychic Link with Julia Kapatelis.
- Amazonian training: archery, equestrianism, hand-to-hand combat (advanced), swordsmanship.
equipment: Standard Amazon weapons and armor. During the War of the Gods, Pythia donned the Sandals of Hermes to travel rapidly to find Julia — these are not her permanent equipment. No named personal weapon or artifact confirmed.
relationships:
- Julia Kapatelis — spiritual daughter. Pythia volunteered to offer the rescued baby back to the sea goddess. With this ceremony, a psychic link was established between the two. Julia would later grow up and become the first human woman that Princess Diana meets in the patriarch's world. Later returning to Themyscira, Julia and Pythia would reunite and form a close mother-daughter relationship.
- Antiope — mother (in older continuity; Antiope has a daughter, Pythia).
- Hippolyta — aunt (in older continuity) and queen.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — Amazon sister and ally.
- Amazons of Themyscira — her people.
- Circe — antagonist during the War of the Gods.
history: In June 1937, an infant Julia Deneiros was swept overboard in the Ionian Sea. Thetis and her Nereids rescued the baby and brought it to Paradise Island. The Amazons raised her back to health, and Pythia volunteered to offer her back to the sea goddess. With this ceremony, a psychic link was established between the two. The silver-haired Amazon Pythia volunteered to bless baby Julia, granting her great wisdom and strength of spirit.
Decades later, when Diana arrived in Man's World, Julia Kapatelis became her first human ally and language tutor — the psychic blessing Pythia had placed on Julia had shaped her into a woman of great wisdom and compassion.
During the War of the Gods, Circe and the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall started a war against Wonder Woman and the Gods of Olympus. She had Doctor Psycho kidnap Julia. Pythia donned the Sandals of Hermes to travel to find her. They brought her straight to Circe's South American hideout. After killing several Bana guards, she freed Konrad Kaslak and Julia.
In older continuity, Pythia and her Amazons blamed the murder of Antiope on Theseus, while Theseus blamed them for the death of Antiope — this schism contributed to the eventual split that produced the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall.
In Wonder Woman Historia, Pythia is reimagined as one of the first-generation Amazons and a founding queen — Queen of the Amazons of Aphrodite — with grey eyes and white hair, rendered by Phil Jimenez in ornate tribal regalia. This version is part of the Historia continuity and may not be identical to her mainline profile.
Pythia remains a minor but historically important Amazon — the one whose blessing shaped Julia Kapatelis and, through her, Diana's first experience with the outside world.
- #44Vanessa Kapatelis
Keys: Vanessa Kapatelis
name: Vanessa Kapatelis; alias: Silver Swan
species: Human with cybernetic nanite enhancement; Vanessa Kapatelis is the Silver Swan, an enemy of Wonder Woman. She has the ability to manipulate microscopic robots known as nanites which are located in her blood stream. Not an Amazon; not a metahuman by birth.
nationality: American.
gender: Female.
titles: Silver Swan; former ballet dancer and singer; member of Villainy Inc.; member of the Suicide Squad. Third person to bear the Silver Swan identity after Helen Alexandros and Valerie Beaudry.
appearance: Blue eyes, red hair. In appearance, Vanessa Kapatelis was a young human with ginger hair and said to be beautiful. Light/fair skin, youthful face, slender-to-athletic build befitting a trained dancer. As Silver Swan, she appeared as a heavily augmented cybernetic humanoid who retained her basic young human female facial features beneath a shell of metallic hardware. Her body was thoroughly reshaped by sinister technology, transforming her into a biomechanical warrior. The most striking features of her new form were a pair of massive, metallic, blade-like wings capable of unfolding from her back to grant her flight. Her cybernetic torso and limbs were covered in streamlined, silver plating that acted as a techno-organic suit of armor. Her hands were altered to feature sharp, metallic claws at the fingertips.
personality: Before her transformation, Vanessa was a bright, artistic young woman with a promising future. Over time Vanessa considered herself to be Wonder Woman's best friend and even started to fall in love with her. Because of the loss of her legs Vanessa would spend her time drawing herself as a hero with her best friend, she called herself Silver Swan after the famous ballet routine Swan Lake. Emotionally vulnerable, abandoned, heartbroken — her loneliness and grief were exploited to turn her into a villain. As Silver Swan, she is cold, bitter, vengeful, and consumed by rage at Diana for what she perceives as abandonment. Capable of genuine remorse and redemption when reached by compassion.
powers and abilities:
- Manipulating the nanites in her blood stream, Vanessa built mechanical wings for herself as well as razor sharp claws and the ability to project deadly sonic screams.
- She was also able to project a devastating sonic scream with her enhanced vocal cords. This "swan song" was capable of various feats. Unleashed it could devastate a small area of land with destructive force. By creating a low-level humming, she was able to form a protective shield around herself capable of deflecting bullets and other projectiles. She could either project them in short bursts or wide, longer attacks.
- Cybernetic Enhancement, Claws, Wings, Flight, Superhuman Speed, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Strength, Sound Manipulation, Mechanokinesis.
- Nanites can also be used to hack any and every computerized mainframe in the world, Diana commenting her technological interfacing potentially could rival Cyborg.
- Trained ballet dancer and singer; skilled artist and historian.
- With additional cybernetic enhancement as Silver Swan her body was a cyborg but with the help of Wonder Woman and Amazonian doctors and Dr. Leslie Anderson, the cybernetic enhancements were fully removed. Her powers are technology-based and removable, not innate.
equipment: Nanite-generated cybernetic wings, claws, and silver body armor — all produced by the nanites in her bloodstream rather than worn externally. No named magical artifact or permanent weapon. The nanites themselves are her equipment and power source.
relationships:
- Diana / Wonder Woman — former best friend and the object of Vanessa's love, later her primary target as Silver Swan; Diana ultimately saved and healed her.
- Julia Kapatelis — mother; Julia died in a car accident, causing Vanessa's physical and mental health to spiral downwards which would eventually culminate into her becoming the villain Silver Swan.
- David Kapatelis — father; deceased.
- Pythia — Amazon who blessed her mother Julia as an infant; indirect spiritual connection.
- Veronica Cale — manipulator who funded Vanessa's further cybernetic enhancement and weaponized her against Diana.
- Doctor Psycho and Circe — manipulators who brainwashed and transformed Vanessa in older continuity; Circe's influence remains part of her backstory.
- Major Disaster — the villain whose bank robbery caused the building collapse that paralyzed Vanessa.
- Villainy Inc. and Suicide Squad — teams she was associated with.
- Lizzie/Trinity — Diana's daughter; Vanessa appeared in connection with Diana's family in recent stories.
history: Vanessa Kapatelis was an ordinary American teenager with a promising future as a ballet dancer and singer. One day Vanessa was present when the disaster manipulating villain Major Disaster attempted to rob a bank. Wonder Woman intervened in his robbery, however the situation escalated and a building fell on Vanessa. Wonder Woman swiftly took care of Major Disaster and then kept Vanessa company as she was airlifted into hospital. The hospital told Vanessa that she would never walk again because of the accident, ending her career as a performer for good. Diana visited Vanessa regularly and told her about the Gods of Olympus; the two became extremely close, and Vanessa fell in love with her. Vanessa was later chosen to undergo experimental nanite surgery and with Julia and Diana's support, Vanessa soon began regaining the use of her legs. Over time Diana gradually visited the Kapatelis family less and less. While Julia understood that Diana had responsibilities elsewhere, Vanessa became increasingly lonely from her friend's absence. Shortly afterwards Julia died in a car accident, causing Vanessa's physical and mental health to spiral downwards. Devastated by her mother's death and Diana's perceived abandonment, Vanessa's grief and the nanites in her blood became the perfect storm. Manipulating the nanites in her blood stream, Vanessa built mechanical wings for herself as well as razor sharp claws and the ability to project deadly sonic screams. With these new abilities the Silver Swan sought to kill those who had replaced her so that Diana would notice her again. Silver Swan attacked Diana's new circle of friends and then confronted Wonder Woman directly. Diana tried to reason with her, but Silver Swan was consumed by rage. After being defeated, Vanessa was eventually healed — with the help of Wonder Woman, Amazonian doctors, and Dr. Leslie Anderson, the cybernetic enhancements were fully removed. In the most recent continuity, Silver Swan reappeared in Wonder Woman #28 (December 2025) as part of Tom King's Wonder Woman: Trinity arc, where she is connected to Diana's evolving family and her daughter Lizzie. The full scope of her role in that arc is still unfolding.
- #45Doctor Cyber
Keys: Doctor Cyber, Adrianna Anderson
Note: Prime Earth has two characters who use the Doctor Cyber name. This profile covers the Adrianna Anderson version, which is the primary and most story-relevant incarnation. A note on the original Cylvia Cyber is included at the end.
name: Adrianna Anderson; alias: Doctor Cyber
species: Human whose mind was merged into a robot construct known as the Cyberwalker, killing her organic body and creating an artificial intelligence. Not a metahuman; not an Amazon.
nationality: American.
gender: Female.
titles: Doctor Cyber; cybernetics expert; co-creator of the Cyberwalker System; member of Godwatch; assistant and best friend to Veronica Cale at Empire Enterprises.
appearance: Blue eyes (red as AI avatar), black hair. When alive: light skin, attractive, youthful face, lean build, professional/scientist styling. As Doctor Cyber: she has an affinity for dressing up her hologram in different novelty outfits — her appearance is no longer fixed; she can change her avatar's look at will. Due to being an artificial intelligence, Anderson can take on any physical form she wants for her avatar, though they seem to be constrained to a simple cosmetic change. She manifests through metallic spheres that emit holograms or through digital screens/interfaces. No permanent physical body or fixed costume.
personality: Dr. Anderson considers Veronica as her best (and only) friend, intimately calling her Ronnie, and she was also a Wonder Woman fan. Before death: selfless, loyal, brave to the point of self-sacrifice — she volunteered to pilot the dangerous Cyberwalker so Veronica could stay alive for her daughter. As Doctor Cyber: either through an incomplete brain scan or the mental trauma of learning that she was actually a copy of a dead woman, Adrianna became unstable and named herself Doctor Cyber. Eccentric, playful, sardonic, digitally uninhibited — she describes herself as "a digital goddess in a quantum-optical mainframe." Despite her new eccentricities, Doctor Cyber retained a close emotional connection to Veronica and Izzy Cale as well as her scientific knowhow.
powers and abilities:
- Metamorphosis: due to being an artificial intelligence, Anderson can take on any physical form she wants for her avatar.
- Mechanokinesis / technopathy: able to hijack and control technology, hack computerized mainframes, and remotely interface with mechanical components.
- Genius-level intellect: expert in cybernetics, electrical engineering, computer operation, pharmaceutical development, and robotics.
- Holographic projection through metallic spheres.
- No physical body — she exists as a digital construct within Empire Enterprises' systems and Godwatch's network. This makes her impossible to harm physically but dependent on hardware.
- Adrianna Anderson developed a device that would enable her to remotely interface with mechanical components. This automated robotics system could physically interface with the neurological mechanics of the brain from a world away.
equipment: The Cyberwalker System (her creation and the device that killed/transformed her); metallic holographic projection spheres; Empire Enterprises' digital infrastructure; Godwatch's network resources. No personal weapon, armor, or magical artifact.
relationships:
- Veronica Cale — best and only friend; boss at Empire Enterprises; the person who resurrected her as an AI. Their bond is the emotional core of both characters.
- Isadore "Izzy" Cale — Veronica's daughter; Adrianna cares for her deeply; Izzy's kidnapping by Phobos and Deimos triggered the chain of events that killed Adrianna.
- Phobos and Deimos — the twin gods who blackmailed Cale into using the Cyberwalker against Wonder Woman, directly causing Adrianna's death.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — Doctor Cyber blamed Wonder Woman for her condition; Adrianna was originally a Wonder Woman fan but became an enemy after her transformation.
- Godwatch — the anti-Wonder Woman organization she serves as Cale's digital operative.
- Cheetah / Barbara Ann Minerva — fellow Godwatch member.
history: Adrianna Anderson was a cybernetic expert and close friend to Veronica Cale, her boss. She developed the Cyberwalker System for Empire Enterprises — a device capable of remotely interfacing with neurological mechanics. When Cale's daughter, Izzy, had her soul stolen by Deimos and Phobos, the pair blackmailed Cale into using Adrianna's Cyberwalker system to scan the mind of Wonder Woman so that they could find the location of Themyscira. Despite Cale initially trying to pilot the Cyberwalker herself, Adrianna intervened and decided that she would be pilot despite knowing the risks. While Adrianna made contact with Wonder Woman the plan went wrong and she became trapped in the Cyberwalker control bed and despite Cale's desperate attempts to let her out, Adrianna died in the machine as it overheated. Around a year after Adrianna's death, Cale managed to scrap together an AI clone of Adrianna's mind that was scanned by the Cyberwalker, but either through an incomplete brain scan or the mental trauma of learning that she was actually a copy of a dead woman, Adrianna became unstable and named herself Doctor Cyber. As Doctor Cyber, she served as Cale's digital operative in Godwatch, searching for Themyscira's location and working against Wonder Woman. Doctor Cyber helped Cale orchestrate multiple schemes against Diana, including manipulating Cheetah and other Godwatch assets. She blamed Wonder Woman for her death and transformation and considered herself the "hands" of Godwatch while Veronica was the "brains."
Note on Cylvia Cyber: Cylvia Cyber, also known as Doctor Cyber, was one of the most renowned scientists specializing in advanced artificial intelligence. She is the original, classic Doctor Cyber — the twisted mastermind behind a global criminal network who became Wonder Woman's archnemesis at a time when the Amazon was stripped of her powers. During an early encounter with Diana, Cyber was disfigured when a rival criminal group threw hot coals on her face. Blaming Wonder Woman for the disfigurement, Cyber sought revenge. She began wearing a cybernetic gold mask to hide her scars and a high-tech cybernetic suit. Forced to work for NewMazo with an inhibitor collar around their neck, Cyber and the other scientists participated in Batman's plan to destroy Ultra-Morpho. The two Doctor Cybers coexist in current continuity; the relationship between them is not explained.
- #46Queen Clea
Keys: Clea, Queen Clea
name: Queen Clea
species: Atlantean; not an Amazon, not a metahuman.
nationality: Atlantean; monarch of Venturia, a nation located on either a subterranean or underwater continent.
gender: Female.
titles: Queen of the Atlantean outpost of Venturia; founder and leader of Villainy Inc.; cruel ruler of Venturia, an Atlantean city where women hold power over men. Later deposed queen. Wonder Woman villain.
appearance: Blue eyes, blonde hair, height 6'5" (196 cm), weight 180 lbs (82 kg). Tall, imposing, powerfully built Atlantean woman with light skin and regal bearing. Her trappings vaguely evoke ancient Mesoamerica by way of ancient Egypt and Greece — ornate queenly regalia, royal crown/headdress, elaborate robes or armor with aquatic and serpentine motifs. In her Trident-wielding depictions, she wears Atlantean battle attire.
personality: Ruthless, arrogant, power-hungry, and tyrannical. Clea enslaved the men of her realm and amused herself by putting many to death in gladiatorial combat. Desiring extended rule, Clea repeatedly attacked Venturia's sister city of Aurania; she expanded her ambition towards domination over the entire lost continent of Atlantis. She assumes that things will yield to her will since she is the Queen. Commanding, bold, and willing to ally with anyone — heroes' enemies, Nazis, or Circe — to achieve her imperial goals.
powers and abilities:
- As a typical Atlantean, Clea possesses the ability to breathe both above and below the surface of water; she has superhuman strength, speed, agility, and stamina.
- Superhuman durability; adapted for surviving deep-sea pressure.
- Flight; longevity — for some unexplained reason, Clea has a long life span, keeping her appearance apparently unchanged for decades.
- Echolocation, enhanced vision, telepathy, water sense — Atlantean racial traits.
- Very tall and fit, with considerable strength; she's also trained in the arts of war.
- Military command, naval tactics, political manipulation, and leadership of large armies.
equipment:
- The fabled Trident of Poseidon, giving her the power to make herself virtually unstoppable. The Trident is not her permanent possession — she has stolen, lost, and reclaimed it multiple times.
- Her abilities were at one point amplified by the witch Circe.
- Atlantean weapons, ships, and military resources; Venus Girdle (stolen Amazon artifact, used to control others); various technological and chemical weapons depending on the era.
relationships:
- Ptra — daughter; Ptra forsook her mother and joined forces with Aurania.
- Queen Eeras — ruler of Aurania, Venturia's sister city and Clea's primary rival.
- Wonder Woman / Hippolyta — arch-enemy; Queen Clea was a persistent foe of Wonder Woman (Hippolyta) during World War II.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — enemy in the modern era.
- Villainy Inc. — Clea led Villainy Inc., which consisted of Cheetah, Doctor Poison, Zara, and Hypnotic Woman; in the modern incarnation, members included Cyborgirl, Giganta, Jinx, and Trinity.
- Circe — amplified Clea's powers for a group assault on Wonder Woman.
- Giganta — ally and fellow escapee from Paradise Island.
- Sontag Henya — right-hand woman on Venturia; she took over leadership of the city after Clea's capture.
history: Clea is the ruthless and power-hungry ruler of Venturia, an undersea kingdom located in the lost continent of Atlantis. Unlike the peaceful Amazons of Themyscira, Clea leads her all-female army in conquests, often seeking domination over neighboring realms and even the surface world. Clea enslaved the men of her realm and amused herself by putting many to death in gladiatorial combat. Desiring extended rule, Clea repeatedly attacked Venturia's sister city of Aurania. Despite this failure she still wished to conquer the entire lost continent of Atlantis. To do this, Clea stole the Trident of Poseidon, giving her vast mystical powers. When Clea took her battle to the surface world she battled against Queen Hippolyta, who was the Wonder Woman in the 1940s, and was defeated. Clea then teamed with the original Villainy Inc. to overtake Hippolyta but her plans were foiled once again. Her daughter Ptra eventually betrayed her, defecting to Queen Eeras and Aurania. Deposed and driven from Venturia, Clea turned to the surface world to rebuild her power base. In the modern era, Queen Clea returned, invading the hidden nation of Skartaris. She worked with Cyborgirl to take control of the entire dimension. Her plan was ultimately commandeered and foiled by the entity Trinity. Clea later appeared as part of a large team of supervillains assigned to kill Wonder Woman. She was once again in possession of the Trident of Poseidon and appeared to possess the power of flight. She explained that she, and her fellow cohorts, had their abilities amplified by the witch Circe. No confirmed Prime Earth solo appearances have been verified beyond her established presence in current continuity as one of Wonder Woman's classic recurring enemies and leader of Villainy Inc.
- #47First Born
Keys: First Born
name: First Born; also called Crippler of Souls. His true birth name was never given.
species: Olympian god — the firstborn son of Zeus and Hera, and the half-brother of Wonder Woman. Not human; not an Amazon; not a New God.
nationality: Born on Mount Olympus; raised in the African wilderness. No mortal citizenship.
gender: Male.
titles: First Born; Crippler of Souls; self-proclaimed King of Olympus. God of Olympus. Wonder Woman villain.
appearance: Like many of those with Olympian blood, the First Born has certain characteristics that mark his inhuman nature. In his case, it is his large body that is twice the height of a normal human and has glowing white eyes without pupils. His body is covered in scars from his fights with wild beasts and monsters. Height: 7 ft 6 in (229 cm). Black hair; white eyes. Massively muscular, brutish build — more beast than god in bearing. In the aftermath of the death of Apollo, the First Born's form was little more than a walking corpse — naked, bald, and pockmarked. He wore armor made from a dragon's skin he had killed; later on Olympus he was stripped of it and reduced to a scarred, monstrous figure.
personality: Through millennia of wandering, he continuously sought his father's approval while simultaneously plotting the destruction of the gods. Savage, wrathful, obsessive, and deeply embittered by his abandonment. He has no capacity for diplomacy or mercy — he sees everything as conquest and domination. Cannibalistic and feral; his upbringing among hyenas left him more animal than civilized being. Despite this, he possesses a brutal cunning and strategic instinct.
powers and abilities:
- As an Olympian god, the First Born possesses sufficient superhuman strength, speed and invulnerability to challenge the likes of Wonder Woman and Orion.
- After surviving blows from Orion and Wonder Woman, he was able to pry open a Boom Tube and hold it open for an extended period of time.
- Immortality; accelerated healing — able to recover from catastrophic injuries.
- Blood Manipulation — he can use his veins as weapons and whips, drain the life of others including gods, and use bodies of blood as teleportation portals.
- Animal Manipulation — the First Born could control hyenas as a baby to bring him food. Later extended to commanding Hyena-men and other beasts.
- Linguistic absorption — he ate one of the scientists' brains to learn modern English.
- Energy Absorption; Divination; Magic.
- Despite his extraordinary physical power, First Born uses his divine genius to manipulate or control lesser beings, like his hyena-men, preferring only to engage in direct confrontations with equals or other gods.
- The strongest of the First Born's powers are only accessible if he has control of the throne of Olympus.
equipment: Dragon-skin armor — made from a dragon he killed in the wilderness; this armor was taken from him during his imprisonment on Olympus. His weapons were confiscated by Zeus and later returned to him by Poseidon as part of their pact. No permanent named weapon beyond the dragon armor.
relationships:
- Zeus — father; abandoned him at birth because of the prophecy; later buried him beneath the Earth after his first attack on Olympus.
- Hera — mother; she did not protect him from Zeus's decree.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — half-sister and primary enemy; she defeated him twice and threw him into the abyss.
- Apollo — half-brother; tortured the First Born on Olympus; the First Born eventually broke free and killed Apollo, claiming Olympus.
- Cassandra — mortal scientist who awaited his emergence from Antarctica; became his lieutenant and guide; swallowed by Poseidon alongside him.
- Poseidon — uncle; swallowed the First Born and Cassandra; later made a blood pact allowing the First Born to pursue Olympus.
- Hades — uncle; co-schemed with Poseidon to use the First Born against Apollo.
- Ares / War — half-brother; Wonder Woman impaled Ares through the First Born, robbing him of the God of War mantle.
- Lennox — half-brother (son of Zeus); the First Born destroyed Lennox in London.
- Zola — mortal mother of Zeke; she knocked the First Born unconscious from behind.
- Zeke — half-brother; the last born of Zeus; Zola revealed herself to be Athena and Zeke to be another iteration of Zeus himself. Zeke's ascension to the throne signified the First Born's final defeat.
- Orion — New God of New Genesis who fought against the First Born alongside Wonder Woman.
- Minotaur — the First Born's enforcer on Olympus; refused to kill Wonder Woman and was killed by the First Born for his disobedience.
- Eris / Strife — half-sister; interacted with him during the Olympus conflict.
- Dionysus — half-brother; assisted Apollo in torturing the First Born.
- Siracca, Milan — half-siblings (children of Zeus); allied with Wonder Woman against the First Born.
history: The First Born was the very first child of Zeus and Hera. On the day of his birth, a prophecy was recited that some day he would sit upon the throne of his father with the rest of the family as corpses around him. To prevent this from coming to pass, Zeus ordered a witch to kill the baby. The witch was told to kill the baby to prevent this future, but decided to spare his life and abandoned him in Africa with a slim chance to survive. However, the First Born was taken in and raised by a pack of hyenas. Despite never meeting any humans before he reached manhood, the First Born knew he was the son of Zeus and tried to gain his attention without success by performing feats of strength and savagery. He built an army, conquered lands, and eventually attacked Mount Olympus. The First Born attacked Mount Olympus, but was subdued by Zeus and buried in Earth's core. It took him 7,000 years to climb back to the surface of the world from the Earth's core. All knowledge of his existence was erased from history by Zeus, the only account of his story being tattooed across the mummified body of the witch who spared him.
The First Born emerges from ice in Antarctica soon after Apollo takes over the throne of Olympus. A group of scientists led by Cassandra had been waiting for him, having deciphered the witch's tattooed mummy. He ate a scientist's brain to learn English and set out with Cassandra to reclaim Olympus. He fought Poseidon's forces and was swallowed by the sea god. In the belly of Poseidon, the First Born and Cassandra were forced to make a deal with the sea god. Poseidon would return First Born's weapon and allow him to overtake Mount Olympus in exchange for leaving the sea and Hell to its current rulers. The First Born was forced to agree when it became clear that if he did kill Poseidon, he would be forever trapped within the god's corpse.
Going to London with Cassandra in search of Zeke, the First Born was met by Lennox, Zola, and his mother Hera, and engaged Lennox in combat. Ultimately, the First Born managed to destroy Lennox, taking up residence on the throne in Westminster Abbey after having sent the city of London into burning chaos. In the battle, the First Born attempted to kill War, but Wonder Woman impaled Ares to harm the First Born instead, robbing him of the chance to take up the mantle of god of war before he was knocked unconscious by Zola from behind.
Captured by the Gods of Olympus and taken to Mount Olympus, the First Born was tortured by Dionysus and Apollo by having his internal organs eaten while he was still alive. Apollo had claimed ownership of the First Born when offered him by Wonder Woman after his defeat. Eventually, the First Born broke free of his bonds and began to choke Apollo. Apollo claimed the First Born and attempted to torture him into obedience, only for him to eventually break free and kill the Sun God, claiming Olympus as his own.
The First Born returned to Olympus and ordered the Minotaur to attack Wonder Woman. The Minotaur, however, refused to kill her and the First Born killed him instead. Upon seeing the unmasked Minotaur, Diana discovered her foe was the creature she had spared in the labyrinth. Wonder Woman furiously threw the First Born into the abyss he was originally trapped in while Zola placed Zeke on the throne.
Zola revealed herself to be Athena and Zeke to be another iteration of Zeus himself. Both had planned for Wonder Woman to fight the First Born and accept her destiny as a goddess. With Zeke ascending the throne, the First Born's defeat was sealed.
Continuity note: It was later revealed that much of Wonder Woman's history from this time was an elaborate illusion created by the Gods of Olympus to keep her away from Paradise Island. All or part of this section may have been part of that illusion and no longer valid in Rebirth. The First Born has not had major confirmed appearances in post-Rebirth or Infinite Frontier stories; his current canonical status is uncertain.
- #48Genocide
Keys: Genocide
name: Genocide
species: Golem — a construct created from the stolen corpse of a future Wonder Woman and soil gathered from sites of historical mass atrocities, animated through a combination of science and magic. Not human; not an Amazon; not a natural being.
nationality: None. She has no citizenship or place of origin in any conventional sense.
gender: Female (her body is derived from Wonder Woman's corpse).
titles: Member of the Four Horsewomen; weapon of mass destruction; Wonder Woman's "Doomsday." No royal, military, or organizational title.
appearance: Red hair; no visible eyes (listed as "No Eyes" in her Prime Earth profile). Massive, grotesque, cadaverous humanoid female form — twice the size of a normal woman, heavily muscled with grey-green decayed skin, exposed veins and scarring. Her body is partially recognizable as Wonder Woman's but corrupted and monstrous. Wears no costume; sometimes draped in tattered remnants or exposed bone and sinew. In her original story the Lasso of Truth was surgically grafted into her spine, running visibly through her torso.
personality: She is evil, lacks empathy and is strategic to some degree. Sadistic, feral, and driven by a single purpose — destruction. She is not mindless: she can feel others' emotions and uses that empathy offensively, feeding on despair and inducing hatred, rage, and hopelessness in everyone around her. She takes pleasure in suffering. She has no loyalty, identity, or moral compass — she is a weapon, not a person.
powers and abilities:
- Golem Physiology / Divine Empowerment: with her body partially created from Wonder Woman's corpse, Genocide is empowered with some godlike powers.
- Accelerated Healing, Empathy, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Reflexes, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Strength, Teleportation.
- Genocide's powers were given to her by Ares: super strength, superspeed, and teleportation. She also has the ability to heal — she's essentially a zombie — but her most potent ability is to induce negative emotions to weaken her opponents.
- Genocide can see into people — she reads souls and feeds on emotional trauma.
- Since she is made of the same DNA as Diana, she is as powerful as Wonder Woman and is one of the few beings able to hold her lasso without its powers binding her.
- A golem who suffers no pain and possesses the strength of Diana herself.
- Aura of despair: generates hatred and rage in her general vicinity.
equipment: No personal named weapon or artifact. The Lasso of Truth was surgically implanted into her spine during her original rampage — it is not her property and was later ripped out by Diana. She is a weapon herself, not a weapon-wielder.
relationships:
- Ares — true mastermind behind her original creation; he stole Wonder Woman's future corpse and manipulated events to build her.
- Paula von Gunther / Warmaster — resurrected Genocide with her blood on the island of the Gargareans in the Tyrrhenian Sea, making Genocide bound to her will as a weapon of mass destruction against the Amazons.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — her primary target and the source of her body; Genocide defeated Diana in their first encounter and tore the Lasso from her.
- Barbara Minerva / Cheetah — directed Genocide's first rampage; tried to humanize her and failed.
- T.O. Morrow — scientist involved in her creation; warned that Genocide could not be controlled.
- Felix Faust — provided the magic that animated the golem.
- Professor Ivo and Red Volcano — collected soil samples from genocide sites worldwide.
- Four Horsewomen — a team created by Warmaster to seek revenge against Wonder Woman and her people, the Amazons of Paradise Island. Members: Devastation, Armageddon, Genocide.
- Donna Troy — fought and stalemated Genocide on Themyscira; delivered the killing blow with the God Killer sword.
- Hippolyta — dueled Warmaster while Genocide rampaged across Themyscira.
- Justice League — Genocide defeated Green Lantern (John Stewart), Firestorm, and Red Tornado during her assault on the Department of Metahuman Affairs.
history: Genocide is a golem superweapon created by the Secret Society of Super Villains to fight Wonder Woman from the stolen corpse of a Wonder Woman from a possible future, soil samples from locations where acts of genocide occurred, and a combination of magic and science. Ares stole Diana's dead body from an unspecified point in the future and manipulated Cheetah and T.O. Morrow into gathering a team of scientists. Professor Ivo and Red Volcano collected soil from sites of historical genocides spanning 1908–2008 — including Auschwitz, Rwanda, and others. Felix Faust provided the magic that animated the construct. Cheetah set Genocide loose in a shopping mall in Washington, D.C. to draw the Justice League's attention. Genocide beat Wonder Woman to the point of near death and stole her Lasso of Truth. After having the Lasso surgically grafted into her body by the Crime Doctor, Genocide was sent to the home base of the Department of Metahuman Affairs to retrieve the captive Doctor Psycho. She slaughtered nearly everyone there before being attacked by the Justice League of America, and she quickly defeated Green Lantern, Firestorm and Red Tornado. Athena reveals to Diana the truth behind Genocide and that the creature will be used by Ares as an instrument to destroy the gods and heroes unless Diana can stop her. Upon learning this, Diana attacked Genocide with renewed vigor, ripping the surgically implanted lasso from Genocide's body and leaving her to drown in the ocean. When Diana went to retrieve the body, she discovers that Genocide had disappeared. Ares arranged for Poseidon's son Euphemus to bring him her body so that he can heal her wounds. On Prime Earth, Genocide is a member of the Four Horsewomen. Her destiny is to exterminate the Amazons of Paradise Island. In the past she had been defeated by Wonder Woman and buried on the island of the Gargareans in the Tyrrhenian Sea, until she was resurrected by the blood of Paula von Gunther, the Warmaster, making her bound to her will as a weapon of mass destruction against the Amazons. Warmaster and her Horsewomen got inside a crypt where lay the tomb of Genocide. With Genocide reawakened, the Four Horsewomen invaded Themyscira. Warmaster and Hippolyta started a duel while Wonder Woman and Donna Troy saved Maggie from Genocide: the creature, a golem who suffers no pain and possesses the strength of Diana herself, was wrecking havoc between the Amazon ranks, but Donna succeeded in stalemating her. Donna struck Genocide with the God Killer, brought from the armory of the Amazons, stopping the creature. Genocide dies.
Status: Destroyed on Themyscira during the Four Horsewomen assault. No confirmed reappearance after her destruction by the God Killer sword.
- #49Euboea
Keys: Euboea
name: Euboea
species: Themysciran Amazon.
nationality: Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: High-ranking Amazon soldier and high-ranking officer in the Amazon army; veteran of the War of the Gods and the Themysciran Civil War; close friend and companion of Wonder Woman. No royal or oracle title.
appearance: Brown eyes, black hair. Athletic Amazonian build, light/fair skin, strong classical warrior features. Wears standard Themysciran Greek-inspired attire — armor/breastplate, tunic, Bracelets of Submission, sandals/boots. No fixed signature costume or unique visual motif; she is a soldier, not a priestess or queen. Exact height and weight are not officially established.
personality: Loyal, dependable, and courageous — a career soldier devoted to Themyscira and to Diana personally. She appears consistently at Diana's side during major crises, suggesting deep personal friendship rather than mere duty. Not power-seeking or politically ambitious; she serves the throne and the army without question. Not deeply developed beyond her role as a reliable warrior-companion.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: The Amazons are a race of warrior women that have received gifts and blessings from five Olympian goddesses: Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Hestia and Aphrodite. Euboea possesses the same potential powers as an average Amazon. These include Enhanced Intellect, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability.
- Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality.
- Self-Sustenance: so long as Euboea stays on Themyscira, she does not require food, water or any other form of nourishment.
- Amazonian training: Archery, Diving, Equestrianism, Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced), Swimming, Swordsmanship.
equipment: Bracelets of Submission. Standard Amazon weapons and armor — sword, spear, shield, bow. No named personal artifact, lasso, or unique weapon.
relationships:
- Diana / Wonder Woman — a good friend of Wonder Woman and loyal companion through decades of adventures.
- Queen Hippolyta — her queen and commander.
- Philippus — fellow senior Amazon and military leader.
- Amazons of Themyscira — her sisters; Euboea served alongside Mala, Io, Menalippe, and the broader Amazon army during multiple crises.
- No confirmed romantic partner or family member.
history: Created by Len Wein and George Pérez, Euboea is one of the most consistently present background Amazons in Wonder Woman's story. A warrior and companion to Diana, she first appeared during the Challenge of the Gods era on Themyscira, where she was established as a high-ranking soldier and one of Diana's closest friends on the island. She served during the War of the Gods, the catastrophic event in which Circe pitted the Greek and Roman pantheons against each other and the Amazons were framed for murders in Man's World. Euboea fought alongside her sisters to defend Themyscira and survived the conflict. She later participated in the Themysciran Civil War between the Themysciran and Bana-Mighdall Amazons, remaining loyal to Hippolyta's faction throughout. She was also present during the events of Infinite Crisis. Euboea first appeared as part of Prime Earth continuity in General Mills Presents Justice League (Volume 2) #3. She also appears in Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons, where she is featured among the founding Amazon ranks. Euboea appears in 72 issues across all continuities combined, making her one of the most frequently appearing non-principal Amazons. She has no confirmed major solo arc, death, or dramatic personal storyline — Euboea's role has always been that of a dependable, ever-present warrior at Diana's side.
- #50Alkyone
Keys: Alkyone
name: Alkyone
species: Themysciran Amazon.
nationality: Themysciran.
gender: Female.
titles: Captain of the Royal Guard; mistress of the armoury; leader of the Circle; briefly self-proclaimed Queen/Empress of Themyscira. Wonder Woman villain.
appearance: Height 5'10" (178 cm), weight 140 lbs (64 kg). Green eyes, bald. Black/dark-skinned woman with a powerful, athletic Amazonian warrior's build, strong angular features, and a commanding bearing. Wears Amazon armor — breastplate, bracers, tunic/skirt, boots. No fixed superhero costume; she appears in guard captain's regalia and later in prison rags during her years of incarceration.
personality: Highly driven, with strong willpower and presence. Genuinely smart, even by Amazon standards, and has proven an able mastermind. She can read the motivations of foes, allies and catspaws alike, and has proven able to anticipate their reactions to her complex and usually successful plans. She has always hated Diana, thinking she was the cause of all the Amazons' problems and has endlessly plotted to murder her. Her hatred for Diana is only matched by her praise for Hippolyta, and her illusions made her believe every horror she did was in Hippolyta's name. Fanatical, obsessive, and unrepentant — she refused to ask forgiveness year after year.
powers and abilities:
- Amazonian Physiology: Enhanced Intellect, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Agility, Immortality, Self-Sustenance on Themyscira.
- A particularly accomplished Amazon fighter — one of the best. By mortal standards, a fearsome mistress of weaponry and combat. Able to fight and kill martial arts grand-masters, monsters, demons or entire squads of ordinary soldiers.
- Archery, Equestrianism, Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced), Swordsmanship.
- Strategic genius and manipulation; able to orchestrate multi-layered conspiracies involving allies, enemies, and divine beings simultaneously.

relationships:
- Hippolyta — queen whom Alkyone worshipped and served with absolute devotion; Alkyone believed everything she did was to protect Hippolyta, even attempting to murder Hippolyta's own daughter.
- Diana / Wonder Woman — Alkyone believed Diana's birth would destroy Themyscira and called her "the Dragon"; she endlessly plotted to murder her.
- Myrto, Charis, Philomela — the three other Amazons whom Hippolyta knighted as her personal guards, collectively known as the Circle; Alkyone's closest allies and co-conspirators.
- Philippus — then Captain of the Amazon military, considered the Circle brutal and overzealous; a rivalry existed between her soldiers and the Circle. Philippus was standing guard the night the Circle struck but was badly wounded and left for dead.
- Phinea — Alkyone's lover, whom Alkyone herself sacrificed to summon Cottus, with the intention of destroying Wonder Woman.
- Achilles Warkiller — Achilles, in need of allies among the Amazons, asked Alkyone to be his wife. This proved to be a mistake, as Alkyone had only one thing in mind: destroying Wonder Woman.
- Cottus — demon she summoned through Phinea's sacrifice.
history: Alkyone was the Captain of Queen Hippolyta's royal guard. She, along with three other Amazons, agreed to protect their Queen's life at all costs. When word got out that Queen Hippolyta was praying to the gods for a child, Alkyone believed it would destroy them. The Amazons are immortal and infertile; a daughter who can age was considered such a substantive change to their egalitarian society that they believed it would destroy the Amazons. Alkyone, leader of the bodyguards, ultimately decided the creation must be stopped, so the Royal Guard attempted to assassinate Hippolyta's newly-born child in her sleep. When discovered in the attempt, they were imprisoned. The guards entered the Queen's bedroom and Alkyone prepared to murder the toddler. But the rest of the Circle lost their heart upon seeing the baby, and even Alkyone faltered and hesitated. Hippolyta awoke and fought the traitors; Philippus, though badly wounded, rallied the other Amazons. The Circle was imprisoned. The four Amazon women remained imprisoned on the island. The same night every year, Hippolyta asked all four of them if they wished to repent, but all of them said no. Alkyone gave Hippolyta a crown and said that it was Hippolyta herself who had betrayed them by giving birth to the dragon. Hippolyta walked away when Alkyone told her she must kill her daughter, or reveal the truth to her. Kept as a prisoner by Hippolyta and refusing to ask for forgiveness, she was eventually let free when the island was invaded and renewed her hunt, but was defeated by Wonder Woman. She ordered the arrest of Hippolyta to force Diana's surrender, but when she brought out 'Hippolyta' to be executed it was secretly another Amazon killed in her stead, for her plan was, and always had been, to kill Diana and then return Hippolyta, to whom she still felt loyalty, to the throne once 'the Dragon's' taint was gone, even at the cost of her own life. Achilles, in need of allies among the Amazons, asked Alkyone to be his wife. This proved to be a mistake, as Alkyone had only one thing in mind: destroying Wonder Woman. To this end she summoned a demon named Cottus, against which the Amazons and Olympians were forced to unite once more. With Cottus defeated and Alkyone and her Circle dead, it seems peace would last between the two races. To summon Cottus, Alkyone sacrificed Phinea, her own lover. Hippolyta shot Alkyone down, and she was later crushed with her three friends by Wonder Woman when she threw the black monster on the ledge where she was standing.
Status: Deceased. Alkyone also appears in Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons, where she is reimagined among the founding Amazons; that version may not be identical to her mainline story.
