Dazai was crouched on the floor of his rusty shipping container bedroom, glaring at his own coat. This was because his coat had just blinked at him. He blinked back, very slowly, like this was a completely normal disagreement between a person and an inanimate object. “I’m going to burn you,” he informed it calmly, which only made the coat wag its sleeve teasingly.
The coat immediately exploded into a puff of smoke and reassembled itself into a tanuki, sitting there with an expression of pure criminal innocence. “You are a nuisance.” He watched, eye twitching, as the tanuki clapped its paws, clearly proud of itself.
This had been going on for weeks, and Dazai was tired in a very specific way which meant he was about to become a problem. He had tried ignoring it, negotiating with it, and insulting it extensively. None of those worked, which he found extremely rude.
Even worse, it had followed him to Bar Lupin, which was sacred ground. His drinking time with Oda and Ango was supposed to be peaceful, or at least peacefully miserable. Instead, Dazai had been forced to sit there while his glass danced across the table. Dazai took many things lightly; his whisky was not one of them.
Dazai stared at the creature and felt his patience snap into something cold and focused. It wasn’t just a nuisance anymore; it was a challenge. And Dazai had never once tolerated losing to anything that thought it was smarter than him. He stared at it now, already imagining a collar, a leash, a strict training regimen, and the immense tactical advantage of a shapeshifting subordinate. It could infiltrate secure locations, impersonate enemies, fetch things, and, ideally, stop ruining his evenings.
It tilted its head now, as if it knew he was thinking about it, which was rude. Dazai narrowed his eyes, fingers twitching slightly in calculation, his irritation finally fermenting into something useful. The “trap” itself was simple, because Dazai preferred efficiency over theatrics when he was annoyed.
He shifted his posture just enough to look bored, just enough to lower the tanuki’s guard, then moved in a blur faster than something that size could react to. His hand closed firmly around the back of its neck before it could dissolve into smoke or something equally annoying. He watched the tanuki freeze, looking shocked, betrayed, and deeply offended.
Dazai smiled, and it was not a comforting smile. “Got you,” he said softly, already thinking of names, commands, and all the ways he would make its life miserable in return. His smile widened, pleased and cruel and boyishly excited all at once. “You’ve been promoted from nuisance to pet. How’s it feel to lose, you dumb dog?”
