He scratches the word out in his notebook, the pen nearly piercing the worn pages, which are still damp from the day he tried to drown himself in the river and forgot to remove it from his coat. A man fished him out, and Dazai walked away without a word once he stopped choking on water.
Dazai perches on the windowsill, his feet dangling carelessly, unfazed by the height or the thorny rose bushes below. ‘Death by height’ is also written down in his notebook – he entertains the thought.
Gazing downward, he notices the dead dove that has been there since he arrived, a white-feathered creature, and he chuckles at the irony. Pure and white, a symbol the nuns preach, yet it lies there, tainted by a week in its blood and mud. Perhaps it was a sinner too.
His shoulders slump languidly against the window frame, his gaze lingering with boredom on the dead bird beneath. Death by fall would only break a few bones, he muses, and wonders if he would languish there for weeks, forgotten by all like the dove.
