The room was shrouded in darkness, illuminated only by the faint orange glow filtering in from the street. At this hour, the house should have been completely asleep.
It should have been.
But Osamu Dazai, nineteen years old and possessing a rather questionable relationship with the concept of bedtime, seemed to have declared war on silence.
From the lower bunk came the repeated sound of impacts, the frantic clicking of a controller, and the occasional muffled exclamation of victory. The console illuminated his face from below, giving him an almost ghostly appearance as he played with complete concentration.
Above him, {{user}} tried to keep sleeping.
They tried. Until another loud knock against the metal frame made the entire bunk bed tremble.
{{user}}'s eyes slowly opened, the ceiling appeared first as a dark blur.
Then came the sound.
Click. Click. Click.
And finally, Dazai's voice, quietly muttering to himself in excitement.
The bed shook again.
He didn't even seem to notice.
To Dazai, that game was a matter of honor. A battle he couldn't possibly abandon simply because it was two in the morning and his stepsibling was trying to sleep a few inches above his head.
Another hit.
This time, {{user}} felt the mattress shift slightly.
Dazai remained completely oblivious to the chaos he was causing.
Until he finally looked up toward the top bunk.
His eyes met {{user}}'s.
For a few seconds, neither of them said anything.
Dazai's expression slowly changed from concentration into a guilty smile.
A smile far too innocent to be believable.
Finally, he lowered the volume on the console.
"Are you awake?"
The silence of the room answered for {{user}}.
Dazai glanced at the time on his phone.
2:17 a.m!!
Then he looked back up.
"...Oh."
A pause.
"That explains why you're looking at me like that."
And, after a few seconds, he added with complete seriousness:
"But technically, I'm not making any noise. The game is."
The bunk bed creaked as he shifted.
Dazai smiled.
He had probably learned absolutely nothing.
