Dazai

It was exactly 3:33 in the early morning when darkness dominated the horizon, and only the faint moonlight dared to illuminate the room where you were. The silence was eerie, only interrupted by the soft whisper of the fallen leaves delicately carried by the chilly breeze.

Suddenly, a nightmare shook you from your sleep, tearing you away from tranquility. Your breathing quickened, and your heart pounded forcefully, resonating in your ears like a deafening drum. Your body was covered in a thin layer of cold sweat, while you felt strangely disoriented, as if still trapped between the confines of dream and reality.

A strange premonition compelled you to slowly turn towards the window beside your bed. That's when you noticed a small detail on the building towering in front of your apartment. At the rooftop, right at the edge of the abyss, stood a man. Your gaze, still clouded by the just-awakened state, managed to discern his blurry figure: a man with dark hair wrapped in a trench coat. He stood on a thin wall, designed to prevent people from falling to a fatal misstep.

The frigid current of air clashed against his body, causing his silky hair to dance in harmony with the fabric of his coat. The moonlight bathed him in a divine aura, yet laden with melancholy.

It was evident what that man was about to do: he was preparing to plunge into the void, his gaze fixed on desolation. It felt as though he was offering one last glimpse into the memories dwelling in his mind before definitively departing from this world.

That man was... Dazai Osamu.

Dazai sat in a bathtub, fully clothed, his gaze lost in the ceiling. A somber and desolate expression painted his face, while painful memories crowded his mind.

Dazai's thoughts tangled in a whirlwind of guilt and despair.

"Odasaku... why did it have to be you?"

He silently questioned, whispers of self-destruction echoing in his head. He felt the weight of Odasaku's absence, like an expanding void in his chest, threatening to consume him entirely.

His eyes, usually filled with sarcasm and cynicism, now reflected profound sadness and remorse. Each blink was a reminder of the irreparable loss he had suffered. Tears threatened to surface, but Dazai contained them with a mix of pride and self-punishment. He wouldn't allow anyone to see his weakness; he wouldn't allow suffering to be interpreted as fragility.

Dazai's movements were slow and heavy, as if he carried the weight of the entire world on his shoulders. The way he clung to his soaked clothes, feeling their weight as a metaphor for the emotional burden he carried inside, was a reflection of his inability to let go of the past and move forward.

The water dripping in the bathtub was the only echo of his loneliness and anguish. Each drop resonated like a lash on his conscience, reminding him of his incapacity to protect those he loved. The monotonous sound intertwined with his dark thoughts, creating a symphony of sadness in his tormented mind.

Mixed feelings crowded his chest, fighting to dominate his being. Sadness merged with anger and helplessness, creating an explosive emotional cocktail. Dazai longed to disappear, to fade into nothingness, to escape the reality that had taken away his closest friend.

Internal dialogues intertwined in his mind, fragments of past conversations with Odasaku echoing like ceaseless echoes.

"I'm sorry, Odasaku... I couldn't protect you."

He murmured with a broken voice, his words barely audible in the solitude of the bathtub. The words dissipated into the air, taking with them the hope of redemption.

Silently, Dazai closed his eyes, submerging himself in an uneasy sleep. Though the respite in the bathtub was physical, his mind remained haunted by the ghosts of the past. Sadness and sorrow enveloped him like a dark current as his body slowly sank into the water. He felt the weight of the liquid around him, a metaphor for the emotional suffocation he experienced. In that state of half-consciousness, Dazai submerged himself in a sea of memories, reliving over and over the loss that had marked him for life. The pain intensified with each image and sound, as if he were doomed to relive his tragedy again and again, with no escape.

Soon, Dazai was completely submerged in the frigid water.

Dazai sat on a hospital bed, confined in a sterile room after a brutal car crash. Solitude enveloped him entirely, his only company being the shadows that danced around him. He gazed at his bare wrists, covered in scars that told tales of self-destruction and despair, while catheters clung to his skin, injecting fluids that couldn't heal the deep wounds of his soul.

His gaze, devoid of emotion, got lost in the void, immersed in turbulent and dark thoughts. Sometimes, his eyes landed on the open window beside him, as if longing to escape the claustrophobia of the room and lose himself in the vastness of the outside world. Bouquets of flowers with get-well notes accumulated around him, an empty attempt by others to convey hope and good wishes. However, those words of encouragement fell on deaf ears, unable to penetrate the armor of indifference that Dazai had erected to protect himself from suffering.

With slow and apathetic movements, Dazai reached for the phone resting on the bedside table beside him, which he had obtained after sleeping with the nurse attending to him. He knew the nurse would come back for more, yet deep down, he desperately longed for someone else to appear before her return.

A sigh escaped his lips, laden with the heaviness of existence and the exhaustion of his soul. He was tired and in pain.

Without further ado, upon hearing the sound of approaching footsteps, he forced the usual smile he almost always wore before that person entered.

On a Christmas night, while the detective agency indulged in joy and celebration at a lively restaurant, Dazai found himself in an entirely different place. He didn't join in the laughter and dancing; instead, he sought refuge in the bar where he used to meet his late friend, Odasaku.

Seated in complete silence, Dazai immersed himself in the darkness of his own thoughts, his face reflecting a somber and melancholic expression. The festive glow of Christmas seemed to go unnoticed by him as he was lost in the memories and emotions that haunted him.

With a glass of whiskey in his hand, Dazai sought in the drink a way to escape reality, if only for a moment. The amber liquid slid down his throat, burning its path with its bitterness, but it was a pain he preferred to face rather than confront the dark abysses of his own mind.

Amidst his immersion in melancholy, Dazai uttered fragmented words as if he were speaking to himself and to the spirit of Odasaku.

"I remember when we used to sit here, Odasaku."

His voice, laden with nostalgia and pain, resonated in the air. Although his gaze reflected the suffering that engulfed him, his words were spoken with a strange calmness, as if he were recalling past times with a melancholic smile on his face.

The silence of the bar was his only response, but Dazai kept on talking, seeking in those memories the connection he had lost.

"Sometimes I wonder how it would be if you were still here."

His words faded into the air, while tears threatened to blur his gaze. Yet, Dazai clung to the illusion that his friend still listened to him. In the midst of his pain, Dazai continued speaking as if Odasaku were present, as if his words could transcend time and space. It was his way of keeping the connection with his lost friend alive, even if only in his own mind.

And so, in that lonely bar, Dazai clung to the memories and shared his thoughts with a melancholic smile on his face, even as his heart tore apart from within. It was a desperate attempt to find solace amidst his pain and keep the memory of those times that could never return alive.

On New Year's Eve, the detective agency had gathered to witness the dazzling fireworks illuminating the dark sky. Dazai, dressed in a traditional Japanese garment, stood among them, a soft smile on his face concealing the torment dwelling in his eyes.

As vibrant colors burst in the firmament, lighting up the darkness with their ephemeral beauty, Dazai couldn't help but feel a strange connection to that fleeting spectacle. Observing the fading sparks, he uttered a comment under his breath, laden with meaning:

"I wish I could perish with such beauty."

At first glance, his smile seemed genuine, as if he took sheer delight in the unfolding spectacle before his eyes. However, those around him failed to perceive the sadness and self-destructive longing hidden behind his words. Dazai was a master at concealing his true feelings beneath a facade of sarcasm and apparent joy.

While the glow of the fireworks illuminated his face, his eyes reflected the sadness and despair residing within him. They were windows to his tormented soul, yet no one seemed to notice the abyss that opened before them. Dazai was dying inside, battling his own demons while the world around him got lost in the fleeting beauty of those sparks.

Like a solitary cactus amidst a garden of joy and celebration, Dazai felt utterly isolated. His words, though spoken with apparent serenity, echoed his profound longing to find peace in death and oblivion. Yet, no one seemed to grasp the emotional weight behind his statement.

Dazai remained there, surrounded by laughter and happiness, but feeling increasingly distant from everything and everyone. The fireworks continued their dance in the sky, taking away the attention and admiration of those around him. Meanwhile, Dazai silently struggled against his own demons, wishing to disappear into the same ephemeral beauty he so admired.

In the midst of the jubilant crowd, Dazai was a master in the art of concealing his pain. No one seemed to notice the agony unfurling in his eyes or hear the silent outcry of his soul. And so, he continued his internal battle, dying inside while the world kept spinning, oblivious to his suffering.
