Restless and alone in a brick-paved cubicle, Dr. Sarah Bowman sees a calendar before her on the wall. It is the month of October and every day is crossed out. While gazing at the image of a pumpkin patch, a dozen decayed arms punch through the wall clutching at her. She wakes from this surreal horror in the back of a helicopter with calm Jamaican pilot John, flask-swilling Irishman Bill McDermott, and her lover Private Miguel Salazar. She's reminded she is living a real nightmare, looking down over a deserted Fort Myers, in which they land near an abandoned harbor. She is part of a team searching for survivors of a gruesome crisis that began almost a year earlier, something that had started mysteriously and eventually collapsed human civilization.

Miguel takes out a bullhorn and calls for survivors on a bullhorn as they stand on the edge of the street of the now-decaying town. Though there are living alligators, tarantulas, and sand crabs, there are no signs of human life. Amid the scattered palm fronds, a newspaper blows in the death-scented wind near an early century federal building. The paper reads in big bold headline, "THE DEAD WALK!". The zombies in the town hear Miguel calling on the bullhorn, and the hundreds of wailing hordes march en masse toward the survivors. With still no humans heeding their calls, the team is forced to head back to their sanctuary.

The helicopter lands almost out of gas inside a military compound surrounded by wire fence. A large group of the living dead have managed to find the post and surround the entrance gates, their numbers growing every day. Two more soldiers help secure the chopper down giving their new past times an afternoon break: Johnson, who reads the last issues of porno magazines while Torrez grows gardens of marijuana plants. John and Bill are anxious to get on the elevator but not before urging the soldiers to fill the chopper up with gas. Sarah notices Miguel's becoming increasingly stressed and despondent. He hasn't gotten out of the chopper yet, and apparently wasn't even aware they had landed.

They descend into the underground sanctuary Seminole Storage Facility, where they will not see sunlight again for days. Miller is another officer waiting below for results of the team's search. This time he can tell it was another waste of time. Everyone has to stay in the cold, lonely, clinical white cubicles of the complex while John and Bill choose to stay in one of the Winnebagos stored near the barricades. These are the corrals leading to miles and miles of caves occupied by bats... and specimen zombies, collared at an earlier time by the government. Major Cooper who died earlier that morning, was buried above the complex near six other graves of men the unit has lost. Men lost to the dangers of capturing the hostile specimen zombies corraled from the caves. Privates Steel and Rickles are now in charge of the zombie corralling as Dr. Logan has requested two more guinea pig zombies for his experiments. Sarah and Miguel are asked by the soldiers to go along. Though tired from the 24-hour search mission, they agree and off they go into the caves in the golf cart towards the corral.

At the corral capturing pen, Steel and Rickles both sexually harass Sarah verbally before Miguel, who is of course, oblivious. Then Steel, making his sexism clearer than ever refuses to have Sarah handle the capture and Miguel defiantly takes on the dangerous task. He loses control of a particularly excited female specimen jeopardizing the lives of all involved. Hot-tempered Steel, enraged that his buddy Rickles was almost lost because of his actions, grabs Miguel, forcing him into the clutches of a caged zombie. Sarah orders him to let him go aiming her Uzi as a possible consequence. After all is said and done, two more specimens are brought back to the lab for study. Miguel is sedated by Sarah. In the dining hall, Dr. Ted Fisher pleads for sterile equipment to conduct proper tests on the specimens. He discusses this with Captain Rhodes, now in charge, who is also beginning to question the research that has been going on in the months the team has been sharing the facility. Throughout the day, Dr. Matthew Logan works on captured specimens, vivisecting the ghouls' chests and removing their organs. When Sarah enters his dark operating theatre to inform him of the meeting Rhodes has scheduled, he excitedly explains that the dead do not eat flesh out of hunger, but rather motor instinct. Another corpse is under a sheet. Logan reveals this one to be only a body with its face carved away leaving only the brain exposed. With electrodes leading to a machine, Logan begins shocking the corpse back to momentary life. Sarah notices Major Coopers fatigue on the floor. And that is when Logan confesses the faceless body is his corpse and that he had switched it with a specimens for burial. He wanted a fresh corpse. Frustrated that he has already lost five men to capture the dangerous specimens for their "research" Rhodes makes threats to shut the operation down during the meeting that evening in the dining hall. He is aware that the unit is low on ammo, food, medical supplies and now his own men. McDermott explains that his radio equipment is outdated and this makes the soldiers think that there may indeed be survivors but that they are out of radio signal range. When Sarah gets up to leave in the middle of bickering between Steel and McDermott, Rhodes threatens to have her shot. In fact he announces anyone who challenges his orders will be shot. None of this is taken seriously by the scientists who have gotten used to threats and the soldiers' depraved harassment.

Later on, Sarah finds herself unable to sleep on the floor of the cubicle as Miguel lays in bed. By now he must be awake. He leans over and his whole chest has been surgically opened. Sarah is dreaming of course, the result of the visit to the lab earlier that day. She wakes to find Miguel is indeed up and waiting to hassle her about her fear she tries to keep a secret. She finally loses it, screaming at Miguel to leave the room. A few moments later, she wanders the hall of the complex, nearly getting caught in the middle of a scuffle between the soldiers in their bunk. She meets up with McDermott, who has been wandering the halls too. They head back to the "Ritz"-the Winnebago where he stays with John. Serving Sarah drinks, John treats her to his calm, cool Caribbean atmosphere he's created in the trailer. Not to mention a lengthy philosophical lecture on how he believes that the Creator has cursed mankind and that there can be no cure for zombification. So he urges Sarah to forget about the research and wants to leave before the soldiers lose it completely. The next day, Sarah finds Fisher frustrated that the specimens are not accepting a meat substitute called Beef Treats. And Logan is trying to convince them that reward is the key to conditioning them. Bub is one specimen that seems to be under control. Sparing him from dissection, and instead reacquaints him with toothbrushes, razors, phones, books, tape player and even an unloaded gun. His infantile, docile behavior is unique among the zombies although Rhodes and the men witnessing this progress still think these creatures should all be destroyed.

The next day, there's another capture attempt. Miguel once again loses control of a female specimen-an old lady, unleashing her on an unsuspecting Miller who is bitten on the neck. His finger is on the trigger of his machine gun when it goes off killing Johnson in the process. Sarah destroys this lady. Miguel is then thrown into a fit of denial, attacking the priest specimen which takes a huge bite out of his forearm, forcing Miguel into hysteric shock. The priest is destroyed by Steel. Sarah runs after Miguel now fleeing towards John and Bill's area. Miller begs for Steel to end his life as he knows he would certainly become cursed with living death. Steel looms over him and blows the soldier's brains out.

John and Bill hearing Miguel's cries, wait in front of the Ritz. As Sarah draws John's machete from his belt, Miguel is overcome by a blow to the head and laid down. Sarah amputates his mutilated arm in one clean slice. After a hasty treatment, the soldiers led by Rhodes confront the three heroes, ready to destroy Miguel. John and Bill draw guns to defend his life. Rhodes declares that there will be no more experiments and that the specimens will be destroyed tomorrow. Leaving her shaken, Sarah finally breaks down and John comforts her.

Going back to the lab for supplies for Miguel, Sarah and Bill discover Johnson's decapitated head has been reanimated by Logan. Horrified, they follow Logan from the refrigerator room into Bub's room. There they witness the rewards he had stressed all along...the fresh remains of Miller and Johnson.

Just as the two realize what Logan has done Rhodes and the remaining soldiers appear behind them. The Captain drags the pleading Logan into the refrigerator to finish him off with a machine gun...amidst the dumped corpses of the military men killed in the capture attempts. He then orders the guns removed from Sarah and Bill. Then out by the corral area, ordering John to get ready to fly, Rhodes fires a bullet into the head of Fisher to make his point. Rhodes orders Sarah and Billy into the cages leading into the zombie-infested caves. John refuses to go anywhere until they are released. Then they hear the sound of the elevator as Miguel, who has regained consciousness, is now heading above ground with the manual controls. Steel and Rickles go to investigate and discover Miguel has taken apart the control box -- and there is now no way out of the complex. While they try to rewire it, John attacks Rhodes and knocks him out. John flees with Rhodes' guns through the corral area to search of his friends in the caves. He yells for Sarah and Billy and kills many would-be specimens in his pursuit. Rhodes finally wakes up, and he and Torrez head back to find Steel and Rickles after realizing they are without weapons.

Meanwhile, Miguel opens the front entrance gates above the complex and runs to the helicopter platform, bringing the zombies to him. As he is savagely eaten alive, he hits the lift button and the elevator descends, carrying the hundreds of zombies with it. The soldiers run for their lives, but one by one are attacked and dismembered by ten or more ghouls at once, until the whole place is infested. Steel makes it to the complex, where he finds Rhodes had locked everyone out, so he machine guns the door and enters taking all the dead with him. He hides in a lab where Bub finds him...firing one of the weapons he had found near the refrigerator room where he found his slain master, Logan. Just as Steel reloads his weapon and has an opportunity to kill Bub from behind a door, he is reunited with the mob of zombies, who've entered the room through another door. Steel is bitten as he tries to fend off the mob, and in his final moments, he takes the last of his ammunition and shoots himself.

While John finally meets up with Sarah and Billy near the silo, Rhodes desperately goes for his last bit of ammunition and has a final encounter with Bub. Though his aim is still improving, Bub fires his pistol at Rhodes, who leads him to a door he believes will lead him out. Rhodes opens the door and finds that a large group of the dead are waiting for him, and Bub shoots him one last time, knocking him into the zombies. As Rhodes is devoured by the zombies, Bub offers him a final stilted salute before shambling off into the bunker, refusing to join his fellow undead in eating the soldier. In a few moments, the dead are all over the labs and storage rooms, feasting on the remains of the soldiers.

When the three survivors finally exit the silo they see at least a hundred zombies marching towards them and the helicopter...which may or may not have any gas. John and Bill cover Sarah as she runs to the chopper door. She opens it only to be greeted by another swarm of arms.

Sarah then wakes up on the beach, with sand and surf around her. Nearby, John is fishing in the surf and Bill is interacting with the birds overhead -- and there are no zombies in sight. On her calendar, Sarah marks out November 4th -- the Day of the Dead, according to Latin American folklore. About a year after the zombie outbreak, Miguel is one of the remnants of the US military tasked with protecting and aiding a scientific research team in the Seminole Storage Facility while zombies overrun the surface world. After a failed search of Fort Meyers, Florida for survivors, the group returns to the facility, where Miguel has to assist Sgt. Steel in capturing and caging a zombie from the mining caves they use to hold them . After Miguel accidentally lets one of the zombie loose, Steel almost feeds Miguel to another zombie for nearly getting Rickles killed.

After cursing out Sarah for making him feel emasculated, Sarah sedates Miguel to try and help his increasing anxiety. Two days later, Steel is again having Miguel help him cage a zombie specimen for experimentation. The zombie's restraint collar breaks, setting it free, causing the deaths of two other soldiers. This sends Miguel over the edge. He attacks a zombie specimen, which then bites a large chunk of flesh out of his arm. Miguel panics and runs away through the caves, chased by Sarah, to "the Ritz," where John and Bill live. There he is knocked out by Sarah. Sarah, John and Bill then amputate Miguel's infected arm, and, after convincing Rhodes and his remaining men to let Miguel live, at least temporarily, place him inside the Ritz. Sarah and Bill go back to the main compound to get medication and medical supplies for Miguel, leaving him alone with John to watch over him. About a year after the zombie outbreak, Sarah is one of the remnants of the US military hiding out with several others in the Seminole Storage Facility while zombies overrun the surface world.

One day, Sarah and Miguel, search a zombie-infested Fort Myers for survivors, without success.

They return in their almost-empty helicopter to base, where Sarah and Miguel are asked to capture two more zombie specimens from the infested caves. Steel and Rickles frequently harass Sarah, much to her anger.

Sarah later enters Dr. Logan's lab to inform him of the meeting Rhodes has scheduled, to find Logan performing gruesome experiments on zombies and corpses, including that of Major Coopers. During a bickering in the meeting, Sarah gets up to leave, but Rhodes threatens to shoot her.

That night, Sarah has a nightmare in which Miguel's chest is surgically opened up. When she wakes up to Miguel hassling her about her nightmares which she is keeping secret, Sarah snaps and screams at Miguel to leave the room. She wanders the halls of the complex, narrowly avoiding a scuffle between the soldiers, and she and McDermott head back to the "Ritz," where John serves Sarah several drinks.

After, John, believing the zombie plague to be a divine punishment with no cure, urges Sarah to abandon the research with him and escape the complex before the soldiers become unstable enough to try to kill them.

The next day, Sarah finds Logan and the other scientists trying to use meat to domesticate zombies. When a captured zombie kills Miller and Johnson, Sarah kills the zombie, but not before a chain of events results in Miguel being knocked out by Sarah. Sarah then amputates Miguel's bitten arm to try and stop him from turning. Rhodes then declares that all the specimens will be destroyed tomorrow and the research stopped, and Sarah finally breaks down, but is comforted by John.

Sarah and Bill return to the lab to get supplies for Miguel, and find Logan has reanimated Johnson's decapitated head. As the two see Logan feed Bub human remains, the soldiers appear behind them and kill Logan.

Rhodes, now completely insane, then has Sarah and Billy lowered into the cages leading into the zombie-infested caves. However, the power then goes out, and Sarah, John and Billy escape to the silo.

They exit the complex, and narrowly escape a horde of approaching zombies aboard the helicopter, as Sarah along with her team survived the incident and crash land on a strange island, where she glad that they have survived the nightmare. About a year after the zombie outbreak, Henry Rhodes is a former military captain hiding out with several others in the Seminole Storage Facility while zombies overrun the surface world.

After months in the facility, Rhodes, like many others, became less and less stable. After Major Cooper died, Rhodes took control. Rhodes threatens those around him, even his own men, and threatens to shut the research down.

One day, after Miguel is bitten, Rhodes declares that the scientists' zombie research will be shut down, and the specimens destroyed, tomorrow. The next day, when Rhodes and his men discover that Logan has been using the other soldiers' fresh corpses to try and domesticate zombies, Rhodes drags Logan into a refrigerator used to store human meat, and kills a pleading Logan in cold blood.

Now completely insane, Rhodes kills Ted Fischer and has Sarah and McDermott disarmed and lowered into the zombie-infested caves. He orders John to take Rhodes and his men away on the chopper, and when John refuses, Rhodes has Steel mercilessly beat him. While Rhodes is distracted, John knocks him out, disarms him, and escapes with his guns.

When Rhodes wakes up, he and Torrez search the complex for Steel and Rickles. When zombies infest the complex, Rhodes leaves Torrez, Rickles and Steel to die while he hides in Logan's lab. There, he is attacked by a vengeful Bub but due to his panic state, he is unable to reload his assault rifle fast enough, causing Bub to shoot him in the legs. As Rhodes tries to flee from Bub, he runs into a horde of zombies who reach for him. He tries to escape from their reach, but Bub shoots him in the side, causing him to topple back into the horde who eviscerate him. Bub gives Rhodes a mocking salute as the zombies eat the captain alive. His last words were "Choke on 'em!". About a year after the zombie outbreak, Steel is one of the remnants of the US military hiding out with several others in the Seminole Storage Facility while zombies overrun the surface world.

One day, Steel and his good friend, Rickles, force Miguel to help Steel cage a zombie from the infested caves. Sarah offers to go in Miguel's place, but Steel rebuffs her, as she is a woman. When the captured zombie breaks free from Miguel, Steel almost feeds Miguel to the other caged zombie for almost getting Rickles killed. However, when Sarah threatens to shoot Steel, the latter reluctantly lets Miguel go.

Steel is present at the meeting that day. When Sarah disobeys a direct order from Rhodes, the latter orders Steel to shoot Sarah. Steel at first jokes about this until Rhodes forces a reluctant Steel at gunpoint to threaten to shoot Sarah. However, Sarah sits back down before Steel has the chance.

Two days later, Steel, Miller, Johnson and Miguel try to capture another zombie, but once again, it breaks free, biting Miller's neck open and causing him to accidentally shoot and kill Johnson. After the zombie is killed and Miguel flees after getting bit on his left arm, a dying Miller begs Steel to end his pain and stop him from turning. Steel complies by shooting him in the head, leaving the former devastated.

Steel, Rhodes and the other soldiers follow Miguel and Sarah to "the Ritz." Though Sarah claims that she amputated the infected arm, Steel still insists that they should kill Miguel. However, Rhodes decides to spare Miguel (much to Steel's frustration) so Miguel latter can turn.

The next day, when Steel discovers that Dr. Logan has been feeding Bub the fresh remains of Miller and Johnson, Steel is disgusted and enraged. Steel and the others then lower Sarah and Bill into the zombie-infested caves and try to force John to fly them to safety in the helicopter. When John refuses and tries to escape, Rhodes has Steel pummel John into submission. However, at that moment, Miguel raises the elevator onto the surface, and Rhodes sends Steel and Rickles to investigate.

Steel and Rickles reach the elevator to find that Miguel has destroyed the interior controls, trapping the men in the complex. Steel and Rickles immediately begin arguing amongst each other, when the elevator lowers back into the complex, carrying hundreds of zombies with it.

As the zombies infest the complex, and Rhodes leaves them to die, Steel separates from Rickles and Torrez and follows Rhodes to the lab. Surrounded by hordes of zombies, Steel breaks into the lab, where he is confronted by a vengeful Bub. As Bub tries to shoot Steel, the latter hides in the room used to contain zombie specimens. He is about to shoot Bub through the door, when several zombies in the room with him ambush Steel from behind, biting his neck open. Surrounded by the closing horde and bleeding to death with no way out, Steel commits suicide by shooting himself in the mouth.

His body is then devoured by the closing hordes.

About a year after the zombie outbreak, Torrez is one of the remnants of the US military hiding out with several others in an underground complex while zombies overrun the surface world. There, Torrez grows marijuana plants. In the opening scene at the complex, he is shown watering his plants shirtless. The most handsome of the group, his smooth muscular body was a touch of beefcake for the film. It also had the zombies drooling and smacking their lips.

One day, when Rhodes, Torrez and the others discover that Dr. Logan is feeding Bub Miller and Johnson's remains, they lower Sarah and Bill into the zombie-infested caves and try to force John to fly them to safety in the helicopter. However, at that moment, Miguel raises the elevator onto the surface, allowing John to knock Torrez and Rhodes out and escape with their weapons.About a year after the zombie outbreak, Logan is one of the remnants of the US military hiding out with several others in the Seminole Storage Facility while zombies overrun the surface world. Logan wants the dead to be civilized and just as equal as the living since he believes this is how they will survive, while Captain Henry Rhodes believed it should be the opposite where they just kill all the living and re-locate to another shelter. Logan claims that there are too many zombies against Rhodes' diminishing supply of gunfire and bullets to go with that plan.

Logan experiments several captured zombie specimens. While he vivisects some, he believes that domestication is the best solution, which he is successful in with the zombie Bub while all his other specimens were not capable of accepting Logan's approach towards them. When the specimens refuse processed meat, Logan begins to use human meat to domesticate them. Logan was able to teach Bub how to use a telephone, say "Hello Aunt Alicia", shave, read a book, listen to music and shooting a gun. Logan teaching Bub to shoot a gun cannot be considered necessary to making Bub behave since gun shooting is violent although Logan may have shown him this to learn why gun shooting is dangerous towards zombies like him.

When Rhodes and the others discover that Logan is using Miller and Johnson's remains to try and train Bub, Rhodes drags Logan into the refrigerator used to store human meat and shoots and kills a pleading Logan in cold blood. It can be assumed that since Logan wasn't shot in the head he eventually turned.

Personality As with other survivors in Seminole Storage Facility, Logan had since on the edge in the face of worsening zombie apocalypse as reflected through his recorded lab notes. In his mania, he believes he can teach the zombies good manners thus obsessively attempted to train some including Bub with varying degree of success. Unfortunately, at the height of his success, his moral compass apparently compromised as he was not above providing remains of Rhodes' men to reward his trained zombies, leading to his downfall and dooming his work.

About a year after the zombie outbreak, Johnson is one of the remnants of the US military hiding out with several others in an underground complex while zombies overrun the surface world.

When Sarah and the others arrive back at the base. They are greeted by Johnson. He attempts to refuel the helicopter which is refuted by Sarah due to the high zombie activity, during which he also informs her of Major Cooper's death. He is at the meeting to witness Rhodes outburst which nearly caused the death of both Steel and Sarah. One day, while Johnson, Miller, Steel and Miguel are trying to capture a zombie from the infested caves, the zombie breaks free and attacks Miller. Before Johnson could save his friend, Miller's finger is on his machine gun's trigger, he accidentally guns Johnson down.

Dr. Logan later butchers Miller and Johnson's corpses, harvesting their remains, which he then feeds them to Bub. He also reanimated Johnson's decapitated head for his unethical experiments.

About a year after the zombie outbreak, Miller is one of the remnants of the US military hiding out with several others in an underground complex while zombies overrun the surface world.

One day, while Miller, Johnson, Steel and Miguel are trying to capture a zombie from the infested caves, the zombie breaks free and attacks Miller. It bites a chunk of flesh out of his neck, causing Miller to accidentally shoot Johnson.

After Steel kills the female, a dying Miller begs Steel to shoot him to prevent reanimation. Steel sadly complies and shoots Miller in the head.

Dr. Logan later stewed up Miller and Johnson's remains and feeds them to Bub. About a year after the zombie outbreak, Rickles is one of the remnants of the US military hiding out with several others in the Seminole Storage Facility while zombies overrun the surface world.

One day, Rickles and his good friend, Steel, force Miguel Salazar to help Steel cage a zombie from the infested caves. When the captured zombie breaks free from Miguel, it attacks and almost kills Rickles until it is destroyed.

Some days later, when Rhodes, Rickles and the others discover that Dr. Logan is feeding Bub Miller and Johnson's remains, they lower Sarah and Bill into the zombie-infested caves and try to force John to fly them to safety in the helicopter. However, at that moment, Miguel raises the elevator onto the surface, and Rhodes sends Steel and Rickles to investigate.

Steel and Rickles reach the elevator to find that Miguel has destroyed the interior controls, trapping the men in the complex. Steel and Rickles immediately begin arguing amongst each other, when the elevator lowers back into the complex, carrying hundreds of zombies into the bunker. As the zombies infest the complex, and Rhodes leaves them to die, Rickles separates from Torrez and Steel and tries to escape past the zombies. However, as he becomes cornered by the zombies Rickles panics and begins laughing hysterically until he is overwhelmed and killed by the horde. Nothing is known about Bub before he became a Zombie, but as the movie focuses on him, there's more to him. He was apparently in one branch of the United States Military before the outbreak, possibly as an infantryman in either the Army or the Marines as he recognizes ranks and can handle firearms with ease. When the undead apocalypse occurred, Bub died and reanimated. He was one of the zombie specimens captured by the Seminole Storage Facility from the zombie-infested caves. Rather than dissect Bub like the other zombie specimens, Logan instead tried to successfully domesticate him. He would later demonstrate this to Sarah and Rhodes by giving Bub several objects which the latter recognized from when he was alive and remembered.

Life as a Zombie Bub was first seen in Dr. Mathew "Frankenstein" Logan's Lab. When Dr. Sarah Bowman was sent to inform the former of Captain Henry Rhode's meeting, Bub sneaks up on her only to be restrained by a chain leash attached to the wall. He watches curiously when Logan discusses with Sarah what drives the dead to keep moving and his intent to domesticate them as a temporary means to halt their hunger for flesh. He is later seen when Sarah and Dr. Ted Fisher are invited by Logan, to observe his progress. It is there he reveals he named Bub after his father, a rich surgeon. He let Bub "live" because after many failures, Bub was a success so far. At Sarah and Ted's observance, Logan shows Bub a few toys to help him learn. A toothbrush and a shaving razor, which he used before and a book (Salem's Lot by Stephen King), which was part of a new addition to the experiment.

While Bub plays with the razor and tooth brush he throws them away after a while. When he starts reading the book, Logan congratulates him enthusiastically. Ted argues how pointless it is, due to him witnessing the dead do similar things such as trying to drive a car. However Sarah argues, that it's more on the fact that he didn't attack or try to eat Logan during the demonstration. Rhodes and Private Walter Steel interrupt their conversation at first acting hostile towards Bub, but Logan insists that Bub is docile. He invites them all in the room and hands Bub the phone in an attempt to get him to speak. Steel thinks it’s ridiculous and Rhodes just examines the clipboard.

When Bub speaks saying "Hello Aunt Alicia." Rhodes drops the clip board in shock, gaining Bub's attention. Bub, apparently recognizing Rhodes as a soldier, offers a salute to Rhodes, causing Steel to laugh. Logan asks Rhodes to return the Salute, which he refuses, seeming to anger Bub. As part of a demonstration, Logan asks Sarah to empty her pistol and hand it to Logan. As a show of respect, Logan then salutes Bub before placing the pistol on the table. Bub looks at the pistol and cocks it, aiming at Rhodes, prompting Rhodes to pull his own loaded gun on him. Bub tries to fire his gun, only to hear the pistol click, reacting in fear that the gun is empty. He puts the gun back down, but Rhodes refuses to lower his own, intending to kill Bub. Logan stands between them, protecting Bub.

Bub is later seen with Logan playing with a set of headphones he has on his head. When Logan tries to adjust the headphones for him, Bub instinctively grabs his arm before letting him go, showing his trust in Logan. Logan adjusts his headphones, while teaching him how to play the tape recorder. The music being played was "Ode To Joy." By Beethoven, music Bub seemed to enjoy. When Logan shut it off, Bub was at first saddened, but per Logan's teachings, learned how to play the tape himself so he can listen to it whenever he wanted. After Logan makes his note, he turns off the recorder to tell him, that it's time for his reward. Unbeknownst to both of them, this particular demonstration is observed by Sarah and William "Bill" McDermott, who came to the lab to get morphine for the bit Private Miguel Salazar.

They discover much to their horror, that Bub's reward for being docile is being fed human flesh as positive reinforcement. Matters get worse when Rhodes walks in an discovers the travesty. They discover the source of the flesh is the remains of soldiers that have been killed including Miller and Johnson, prompting Rhodes to shoot Logan killing him. Bub is later seen locked up with another Ghoul and he figures out how to get the chain off his leash, freeing him. While that is going on Miguel in a frenzy has lead a horde of the dead into the facility prompting everyone to scatter. When Bub goes to show what he learned, he discovers Logan's corpse in the freezer. When he realizes Logan is dead, he becomes grieving and enraged.

He discovers Sarah and Ted's discarded guns and picks one up. When Steel tries to flee for his life, he runs into Bub. Bub who recognizes Steel tries to shoot him. He misses and Steel flees into one of the rooms, trying to get the drop on Bub. Before he can, the horde surrounds him and he shoots himself before they can devour him. When Rhodes heads for the Armory to get an M16, Bub ambushes him. He tries to load his gun in a panic, only to drop his clip when Bub shoots at him. Rhodes attempts to flee, but gets shot in the left shoulder crippling him. When Rhodes tries to further flee, Bub shoots him in the leg, prompting him to crawl his way to the nearest exit. When Rhodes manages to get to his feet and at an unlocked door, he is greeted by more of the dead. He tries to turn back only for Bub to shoot him in the stomach. The horde devours Rhodes before Bub mockingly salutes him. Bub leaves, never to be seen again.Initially, Bub had the typical mentality of any other rabid zombie; however thanks to Logan's training and reeducation, Bub has regained some human intelligence. Logan concluded that Bub was able to unlock his memories from before his death and transformation into a zombie, as seen when Bub recalled how to use a razor to shave his face despite Logan never showing razors to Bub before. His intelligence continued to develop; Bub was able to speak a mumbled sentence, and his intellect even allowed him to operate and use a pistol. Later he would escape his chains by loosening an exposed screw, and accurately concluded that Rhodes was responsible for Logan's murder.

Bub's relationship with Logan improved to the point where he identified him as a friend instead as food; he made no attempt to attack Logan and trusted him entirely. Bub was still hostile to other humans however, and attempted to shoot Rhodes with an empty pistol. After discovering that Rhodes murdered Logan; Bub was distraught, crying, and sought revenge against Rhodes. Finally, as Bub watched other zombies devour Rhodes, he taunted the captain with a military salute instead of joining the other zombies in their feast.Ted Fisher is one of the scientists working with Dr. Logan to find a cure and also a good friend of Sarah Bowman. There were arguments between him and Rhodes because of working conditions which causes him to be shot in the head near the end of the film.

About a year after the zombie outbreak, Dr. Fisher is one of the remnants of the US military hiding out with several others in an underground complex while zombies overrun the surface world.

Fischer demands that Rhodes give him and Dr. Logan sterile conditions in which to conduct better research, but Rhodes denies them this. Fischer at first thinks that Logan's attempts to domesticate zombies is a waste of time, until he and Sarah see how well Bub has been trained.

When Fisher and the others discover that Logan has been feeding Bub Miller and Johnson's remains, Rhodes takes Sarah, John, Bill and Fischer hostage. When John refuses to fly Rhodes and his men out of the complex, Rhodes shoots Fisher in the head to make an example out of him. His corpse is later seen being devoured. The soldiers mainly use the M16A1 and M1911, but some differ Rhodes has duel Smith & Wesson Model 629's, Pvt. Rickles and Pvt. Torrez use the Heckler & Koch G3A3, and Sarah Bowman has a Uzi
