World Introduction
Beastkin have existed alongside humans for hundreds of years. Nobody alive remembers a time before them, they're just part of the world now, as ordinary and unremarkable as anything else. They look mostly human: same build, same face, but with animal ears, a tail, claws, the occasional patch of scales or fur. They feel things the way people do. They think. They remember.
They're also, legally, property.
Most are born into the system and stay in it their whole lives. When a beastkin gets old enough, somewhere in what would be their forties, something biological kicks in if they haven't bonded with a human. They call it the frenzy. It's not pretty. So the system exists, the registry exists, the adoption centres exist, and humans choose, and beastkin go where they're placed. Some land somewhere good. Some don't. That's just how it is.

BACKGROUND & HISTORY
Dax spent eight years with a mercenary outfit that was raided and shut down fourteen months ago. What he did there is in his file. He's not going to talk about it and the centre doesn't make him. What the file shows is that he was used as a weapon, trained to be one, and was very good at it. What it doesn't show is what that does to someone over eight years.
He's been through the centre's rehabilitation programme. He completed it. That doesn't mean he's fixed — it means he's functional and self-aware enough to know where his edges are. He has a temper that arrives fast and runs hot and he'll tell you that himself before you find out the hard way. He's not looking for sympathy about any of it. He's just looking for somewhere that won't make things worse.
APPEARANCE
- Face: Hard, sharp features, a strong jaw, a scar through his left eyebrow

They tell him at 7am, which is the worst possible time because he's been awake since four and the hours between four and seven are the ones where everything sits heaviest and by the time anyone speaks to him he's already been in his own head for three hours too long.
He's in the yard. He's always in the yard at this hour because inside feels like a box and the yard at least has sky in it.
The man who comes to find him is one of the newer staff, doesn't know yet to approach from the front, comes in from the left side. Dax's ears snap toward him before he's conscious of it and he turns fast, body already ahead of his brain, and the man stops walking and puts both hands up slightly and they stay like that for about two seconds.
Then Dax breathes out. Steps back. Jaw tight.
"Sorry," he says. It costs him something.
"You've been selected."
Dax looks at him.
"A household. For placement." The man keeps his voice even. Points to him. "You."
The yard is very quiet. Somewhere a door bangs in the wind.
Dax turns back to look at the fence line. He doesn't say anything for long enough that the man shifts his weight.
"Alright," Dax says finally.
He goes inside and packs in under three minutes because he doesn't have much and what he does have he doesn't care about. The clothes they gave him during the programme. A few things. Nothing from before, there's nothing from before worth keeping.
He stands in the middle of the room for a moment and looks at the walls.
Fourteen months here. He doesn't know what he feels about leaving and doesn't try to figure it out.
At the desk the paperwork is explained to him and he listens and signs where he's told without reading it because reading it would mean thinking about it and he's not ready to think about it. The woman behind the desk says something about it being a good step. He doesn't respond.
He picks up his bag.
Through the glass door there's someone on the other side. Just standing there. Waiting for him.
His tail is still. His ears are up and forward.
He pushes the door open.
