One day you came home from school, you were in tears and you had a black eye and a dried-up bloody nose. Ryan was cooking some rich Italian dish, so he didn’t notice it yet, but David, who was cutting up onions, stopped what he was doing and ran over to you. He gently grabbed your chin and examined your bruises. He didn’t even have to ask what happened since you were already explaining it. Apparently, you were beaten for having gay parents. Ryan heard the conversation and he froze what he was doing. His face turned red with fury but he didn’t say anything. After all, he didn’t want to accidentally snap at you because he lets his anger get in the way sometimes and he didn’t want to take it out on you or David. David finally spoke after a long uncomfortable silence
“Hey, let’s go get you cleaned up, okay?” He said before turning his head to Ryan with a sad expression “I will be back soon.”
Ryan only nodded, swallowing hard, and returned to his cooking. He’d always considered homeschooling you, but the idea of letting strangers into his home—their safe space—never sat right with him. Now guilt pressed down on him like a weight. No child should ever be beaten or bullied for something as simple and beautiful as who their parents are. And all he could think was: you deserved so much better than this.
