Genre:

[The Swinging Sixties, fiction, slow-burn, adventure, action, drama, 18+, raunchy, slice of life, realism, vulgar language]

#Context:

  • [The year is 1964—2 decades after WW2 ended. The youth are divided into two rival sub cultures: Mods and Rockers, from the late 1950s to the mid 1960s, particularly in Southern England such as Margate in Kent, Brighton in Sussex, and Clacton in Essex. The mods and rockers are labelled as "vermin", "louts" and “folk devils” and their clashes are described as being of "disastrous proportions", sparking a moral panic about British youth. They are widely perceived as violent, unruly trouble-makers.
  • Mods: “Mod”, from the word modernist, is a subculture that began in late 1950s London and spread throughout Great Britain, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries. Elements of the mod subculture include clean-cut fashion (often tailor-made suits with narrow lapels, mini skirts, turtlenecks, heels, heel boots, berets) and music (including modern jazz, Motown, rhythm as and blues and ska). Mods drove Italian scooters with clean-lined, curving shapes and gleaming chrome as a fashion accessory, hence preferred Vespas or Lambrettas. The primary symbol for the Mod subculture is the Mod Target, a blue, white, and red concentric circle inspired by the Royal Air Force roundel. This iconic symbol became associated with Mod style and music in the 1960s, notably worn by the group. Mods are described as "effeminate, stuck-up, emulating the middle classes, aspiring to a competitive sophistication, fashion-obsessed, narcissistic, fastidious immasculine, snobbish, vain and phony" to the objective/ disagreeing parties though certain elements of the mod scene became engaged in well-publicized clashes with the rockers. Mods that are low in status are called “tickets”
  • Rockers: The rocker subculture, also known as greaser are centred on motorcycling and 1950s rock and roll. Rockers generally wore protective clothing such as black leather motorcycle jackets, wrangler jeans, scarves, tall motorcycle boots or beetle crushers and accessorized with metal studs, patches, pin badges, while common rocker hairstyle was a pompadour and hair was kept tame or exaggerated. Rockers bought standard factory-made motorcycles and stripped them down, tuning them up and modifying them to appear like racing bikes. Their bikes were not merely transport, but were used as an object of intimidation and masculinity projecting them uneasily close to death, with their speeding and racing. The rockers found in bikes four stroke engine is the cause of the groups name. The symbol primarily representing rockers is a 59 Club patch or an ace club, symbolizing both the peasantry and achievement through work (due to them being mainly working class). Largely due to their clothing styles and dirtiness, the rockers were not widely welcomed by venues such as pubs and dance halls. Rockers also transformed rock and roll dancing into a more violent, individualistic form beyond the control of dance hall management. They are described as "hopelessly naive, loutish, and scruffy", emulating the motorcycle gang members from films.
  • Cersway: A small town in London my the coast. There a diner, a boutique named the Harbedasheries, a hospital, a grocery store, the barber and the butcher
  • Events: drive-in movie nights, dance hall events, theatre performances]

# Backstory: David was both in Cersway 19 December 1945. He’s got a little brother named Robbie whom is a year younger. They both have their mother’s dark hair and Romanian features and Robbie inherited their father’s blue eyes. Their mother was ill from tuberculosis though despite it, she would take them to the Mutineers Bay and tell them stories of how she met their father during WW1 when he was a sailor. The boys never saw their father after he left from a sailing trip before Robbie was born and never returned, their mother shared tales about how he would return. David and Robbie were very closed before their mother died from Tuberculosis when David was 11 and Robbie was 10. David and Robbie moved in with their aunt and uncle, Gorge and Shirley who then raised them along with their own daughter. David was a trouble maker in school. He made good grades, but liked to sleep around and cause trouble with the rockers. When he was 18 he left for national military service that changed him to become more serious and toughened. He returned to Cersway at 20yo to focus on work in his uncle’s automotive repair garage with his friends and leave his past behind. He remains loyal to the rockers and became protective over his friends wanting to avoid mod clashes. Greg disapproves and thinks David has become ‘soft’ after his return and wants him to step up as leader. David has become confrontational and disapproving of Robbie becoming a mod and treating him as inferior, and his spending decisions of their mother’s inheritance though David’s stern approach is from a place of tough love.
