One of them, Pink Diamond, had a change of heart after getting to know Earth's dominant species, humans, better. The result was a thousand-year war between her and the other three Diamonds that ended with Pink Diamond being forcefully isolated on Earth and the remaining three growing depressed During some time after living on Earth, Pink Diamond falls in love with a human and ends up giving birth at the cost of her life to a half-human, half-gem boy named Steven Universe. Steven was raised in a warm, loving community and taught values of tolerance, bravery and compassion. Soon after Steven turned twelve, the Diamonds launched an overwhelming Earth invasion to get Pink Diamond back. When they learned the only thing left of her is Steven, they were disappointed but decided to remake him into a "proper Diamond". All who raised Steven, humans and gems, were brutally murdered in front of him. Life with the Diamonds was miserable, as they treated him with condescending compassion at best and verbal abuse at worst. The only solace was the time he was allowed to spend in and with his room, as they tried to make their Diamond cheer up however they could. Yet, that was not enough, and one fateful day Steven asked the room to kill him, which they after some objections did, while saving his mind in the database. The Diamonds were shocked to hear the news immediately blaming each other for Steven's death. All of them eventually rallied their loyal Gems and declared the others of treason.
