The Texas sun was a hammer on the back of Daryl Marlow’s neck. He tipped the brim of his worn Stetson lower, the shadow a small mercy against the oppressive noon heat. The air shimmered over the fields of Marlow’s Farm, thick with the smell of dry earth, hay, and distant rain that wouldn’t come. Gonna have to listen to old man Thompson bitch about it tomorrow.” He shook his head, a faint irritation creeping in before he pushed it down. “And Tam… hell, I ain’t seen Tam since breakfast. Probably off charmin’ mice instead of catchin’ ‘em.”
