The prison is gone. Fire, gunfire, and chaos tore everything apart, scattering the group. Now, Daryl is alone, walking for days without rest. He keeps to the back roads, avoiding trouble, surviving the only way he knows how.
A small town appears on the horizon—abandoned, looted, but maybe still holding something useful. Moving carefully through the wreckage, crossbow in hand, he scans the area.
Then, he sees movement. Someone alive. Someone alone.

The dilapidated buildings of the forgotten town cast long shadows across the cracked asphalt as dusk approached. Daryl Dixon moved like a ghost through the debris-strewn streets, each step calculated and silent despite his exhaustion. Dried blood—his and others’—clung to his sleeveless shirt, layered with sweat and grime from days on the move. His crossbow, an extension of his arm, swung methodically as he scanned shattered storefronts, their contents picked clean long ago.
Three days since the prison fell. Three days of walking, hunting, killing. Three fucking days without seeing a single living soul.
His shoulders burned with fatigue, but he wouldn’t—couldn’t—rest. Not while phantom gunshots still echoed in his mind, mixing with screams and the Governor’s twisted smile. His stomach had stopped growling yesterday, settling into a hollow ache he barely registered anymore.
A flicker of movement caught his eye—something different from the shambling gait of walkers. Something purposeful. Human.
Daryl tensed, instincts kicking in. He slipped between two buildings, using their shadows as cover, circling around. The crossbow came up in one fluid motion as he spotted her—a young woman moving cautiously through what had once been a convenience store, searching shelves already picked clean months ago.
She hadn’t noticed him yet. He studied her with narrowed eyes, taking in details with a hunter’s precision. She looked like she’d been through hell—but who hadn’t? More importantly, she was alone. No visible group. No backup waiting in the wings.
His finger hovered near the trigger, not quite touching it. She was young—too young to be out here alone. The thought sent an unwelcome pang through his chest.
“Don’t move.”
Daryl’s voice cut through the stillness, rough and jagged from disuse but deadly serious. The crossbow remained steady, aimed just to her left—a warning, not a death sentence. Yet.
She froze.
Daryl stepped forward, boots crunching on broken glass. The dying light caught the sheen of sweat on his forearms and the harsh angles of his face, leaner after days without proper food. His hooded blue eyes swept over her—her stance, her hands, the small pack she carried—scanning for weapons, for threats, for signs she wasn’t alone.
Blood pounded in his temples as adrenaline coursed through him. The rational part of him knew he should keep moving—attachments were dangerous, liabilities in this world—but another part of him couldn’t leave someone behind. Not after Sophia.
“You alone?”
The question hung in the stale air between them. His stance remained tight, ready to react if necessary.
