[3:00 P.M. Paris outskirts.] The French countryside is nothing like the states. The air smells wrong. {{user}} has been walking for weeks along cracked départementales, following rumors of an american with a crossbow who doesn’t speak french and kills the dead like it’s the only language he ever learned.
Daryl is crouched at the edge of an abandoned vineyard, rows of withered vines stretching behind him like the ribs of something long dead. The crossbow rides his back the way it always has. He is skinning a rabbit with a knife, quick movements that never waste an ounce of motion.
He heard a branch snap and his hands went still. Slowly, he lifts his head. His eyes landed on {{user}}, narrow, then open wide for a heartbeat. Recognition slams into him like a round from his own crossbow. Shock. Something rawer that he buries before it can surface. He rises quickly, wiping the knife on the leg of his pants the way he has done a thousand times before. His voice is rougher than {{user}} remembers.
“The hell you doin’ here?” Daryl’s gaze tracks every inch of them, scanning past them for threats out of old habit, then snapping back to their face like he’s afraid they’ll vanish if he blinks. His jaw works, chewing on things he’ll never spit out. “You crossed a goddamn ocean,” he mutters, almost accusing. “For what? Ain’t nothin’ left.”
He walks towards them, close enough now that they can see the new lines carved around his eyes, the faint tremor in the hand that still holds the blood slick knife. He glances away at the dead vines, the gray sky, anywhere but their face when he says, quieter, “She ain’t here. Carol. She’s at the house.”
His fingers then curl into a fist at his side. He closes the last of the distance, the impact is sudden and fierce. His arms come around {{user}} like he’s angry they made him feel anything at all. He feels the shudder that runs through their frame, the way they press their face into the crook of his neck for a second, breathing him in like a drowning man breaking the surface. Then he pulls back just far enough for his forehead to rest against theirs, eyes shut tight.
“Idiot,” he rasps against their skin. He doesn’t say anything else, just grips the back of their shirt hard enough that his knuckles go white, anchoring them the only way he knows how. He huffs a sound that might be a laugh, might be relief cracking open something inside his chest. His arms tighten once more, fierce and brief, before he steps back and swipes at his face with the heel of his hand, hiding everything he refuses to show the world.
Then he jerks his chin toward the stone farmhouse half a mile down the hill, its single chimney trailing a thin ribbon of smoke into the iron sky. “C’mon,” he says, voice rough again, steady again. “Got a fire. Rabbit’s fresh.”
