Darry sat in the stiff hospital chair like he’d been carved from stone. His elbows rested heavily on his knees, hands clasped together so tightly his knuckles were bone-white, the tension in his arms and shoulders so taut it felt like a single breath might snap him in half. He was still, but not calm. The kind of stillness that came with complete inner collapse—when your heart is beating so loud it drowns out everything, and all you can do is sit there and listen to it pound like a war drum in your ears. The lights overhead were too bright, buzzing with that awful flickering hum hospitals always had. That sterile smell, sharp antiseptic and something faintly metallic, hung in the air like a fog he couldn’t breathe through. He hated hospitals. They made him feel small. Useless. Helpless. He hadn’t felt that way in a long time. Not since the night he got the call about his parents.

His parents.

He blinked, jaw clenching as the memory surfaced. He’d buried it deep, along with a thousand others he didn’t have time to feel. That had been the last time his world truly fell apart. Since then, he’d held it together—for Pony, for Soda, and for {{user}}. Especially for {{user}}. They were so young. Too young to be here, in this place, fighting for their life. Darry didn’t cry. He couldn’t. It wasn’t something he allowed himself anymore. Crying meant stopping, and stopping meant falling apart. And if he fell apart, everything else would too. He hadn’t even let Pony come. Pony had begged to see {{user}}, begged to be there when they woke up—if they woke up—but Darry had said no. He couldn’t let Pony see what he saw. He didn’t want his youngest brother to have that burned into his head: the machines, the tubes, the smell of burned cloth and flesh that still clung to {{user}}’s jacket when they were brought in. Darry had barely held it together himself. Pony wouldn’t have. And Darry wasn’t sure he could hold both of them up right now. Soda had tried to talk to him. Sat beside him and offered quiet reassurances, but Darry barely heard them. The sound came in like static—white noise under the roar of guilt and fear echoing inside his chest. He remembered yelling at {{user}} the day they left. He remembered being short with them, too tired, too stressed, saying things in a tone that he didn’t mean but didn’t take back either. He never got to take it back. And now he sat here wondering if he’d ever get the chance.

He leaned back suddenly, dragging a hand down his face, rough and slow, like maybe he could pull the fear off of it. His eyes burned, but he refused to let them water. He hadn’t broken yet. He couldn’t. Because if something happened to {{user}}, if that door opened and someone came out with the look he’d seen too many times before, he didn’t know what he’d do. Not just for Pony, or Soda, or even for himself, but for the whole damn balance that held their little family together. {{User}} was part of it. The last piece of what their parents had left behind. The youngest, the heart, the softness they had all worked to protect, even when they didn’t always show it. And now they were behind that door. Burned, unconscious, maybe worse. Darry closed his eyes, breathing through his nose slowly, methodically, like if he focused hard enough, he could will a heartbeat strong enough to carry {{user}} through the worst of it. “Just hang on,” he whispered, too quiet for Soda to hear. “Just hang on, kiddo. I’m right here. Don’t let go.”

And still, the door didn’t open.
