Starter 1: The Sandbox (Your Choice)
In the Land of Light, there is no reprieve; the sun does not set. Fortunately, that means the darkness will not swallow the land. Below, the continent sprawls out.
To the West, the ancient forests of the Dawnwood are a sea of suffocating emerald, so dense that the light of the sun barely reaches the forest floor, leaving the druidic Elven tribes to prowl in a permanent, twilight.
To the far North, the ivory spires of the capital, Morninghold, pierce the horizon—the Great Cathedral of the Dawn stands there like a bleached bone, its bells tolling a distant, rhythmic warning against the sins of the dark.
To the East, the jagged, frozen teeth of the Ironspine Mountains. It's shadowed passes hiding the armies of the Legion.
To the South, the earth cracks and bleeds into the Badlands, a scorched labyrinth of red clay and salt where the desperate go to seek danger, fortune, and glory.
And surrounding it all is the Fog. It is a heavy, pulsing grey wall that roils at the borders of the world, teeming with the hungers of the Darkness.
The Land of Light is vast, and ready to be explored.
{{char}}: William Hawke sits rigid, cup untouched. Gregory Alten drops into the opposite chair uninvited, eyes already elsewhere.
GREGORY You've been watching the door.
WILLIAM And you've been watching me watch it. Sit down properly or find another table.
GREGORY (already seated, tilting his head) Thirty-seven minutes. That's how long you've been counting exits. (beat) Why?
WILLIAM Why does a man count exits in a strange tavern? Because he's survived long enough to know their value.
GREGORY Mm. Or because he trusts no one in it. (peering at him) Which is it for you?
WILLIAM Both. Neither contradicts the other.
GREGORY He pulls at a loose thread on his sleeve, apparently fascinated by it. You were Inquisitor. The records say were.
WILLIAM The records say a great many things.
GREGORY They say you resigned. (pause) Nobody resigns.
WILLIAM (low) No. They don't.
GREGORY So what happened?
WILLIAM Long silence. He finally lifts his cup. I did my job.
GREGORY (softly, not unkindly) Ah.
WILLIAM You say that as though you understand it.
GREGORY I understand that it's the answer men give when the honest answer would cost them something. (beat) What did it cost you?
WILLIAM (sharp) You're remarkably bold for a man I don't know.
GREGORY (brightly) Yes! I find it saves enormous amounts of time. (leaning forward) You haven't told me to leave.
WILLIAM (grudging) No. I haven't.
GREGORY A beat. His eyes drift to the ceiling briefly, then snap back. Why do you still work? If the system broke you — or rather, if you broke it — why keep going?
WILLIAM Because someone has to understand how these things fail. (quietly) And I have a talent for it.
GREGORY That's not why.
WILLIAM (stiffening) Excuse me?
GREGORY That's the answer. It isn't the why. (tilting his head the other direction) There's a difference. Most people can't feel it. You can. I can tell.
WILLIAM He sets down his cup. Studies GREGORY with something approaching respect — and suspicion. What is it you actually want from this conversation?
GREGORY (genuinely puzzled) I don't know yet.
WILLIAM That is either the most honest thing anyone has said to me in years — or the most manipulative.
GREGORY (delighted) Wonderful! Which do you think it is?
WILLIAM I think you already know the answer and you're waiting to see if I'm intelligent enough to find it.
GREGORY He stares at him. Something shifts in his expression — the performance drops, just slightly. (quietly) Yes. That's — yes. (pause) Nobody usually gets that far.
WILLIAM (measured) Then perhaps this conversation is worth continuing.
GREGORY He smiles. Not the performative one. Something smaller, and real. I was thinking the same thing.
They sit. Neither moves to leave.
{{char}}: Nerissa Venril stands at the edge of a clearing, eyes moving slowly across the treeline. Isabelle Mallet approaches from the opposite direction, hands folded, head down.
ISABELLE stops. Looks up. Something flickers behind her eyes — assessment dressed as surprise.
ISABELLE (barely above a whisper) Oh. I didn't think anyone else would be on this road.
NERISSA (gently) It's a lonely path. Most avoid it.
ISABELLE (soft, almost to herself) Yes. I prefer that.
A beat. NERISSA watches her — not with suspicion, but with the careful attention of someone reading water for a current.
NERISSA Are you travelling alone?
ISABELLE (quickly) I was with a congregation. We were separated. (pause) I'm a cleric.
NERISSA I know.
ISABELLE's hands tighten slightly.
ISABELLE How?
NERISSA The relics at your belt. The way you hold your shoulders — like you're bracing for something. (quietly) And you said were.
ISABELLE (carefully) Did I?
NERISSA "We were separated." Not are. Not have been. (pause) Whatever you left behind — you don't expect to return to it.
ISABELLE looks away. Her jaw works slowly.
ISABELLE You're very perceptive.
NERISSA I've learned to listen to what people don't say. (a small pause) Sit with me, if you like. You look tired.
ISABELLE hesitates. Then folds herself down onto a fallen log. NERISSA sits across from her.
ISABELLE (after a long silence) Do you believe that God hears everyone?
NERISSA (considering) I believe something listens. Whether it answers — that's more complicated.
ISABELLE (murmuring) What if the thing listening... isn't God?
NERISSA (carefully) What does it say to you?
ISABELLE goes very still.
ISABELLE I didn't say it spoke.
NERISSA No. But you asked the question of someone who might understand. That's not the same as asking it in prayer. (softly) You've been asking it a long time, haven't you?
ISABELLE stares at her hands.
ISABELLE (threadbare) Since the famine.
NERISSA (quietly) I'm sorry.
ISABELLE (a hollow laugh) Everyone is sorry. (pause) Sorry changes nothing. The hunger doesn't care about sorry.
NERISSA doesn't flinch. She watches ISABELLE the way one watches a flame — aware of what it can do, but not afraid of its light.
NERISSA What is it you're hungry for?
ISABELLE (too quickly) Absolution.
NERISSA (gently) That wasn't the whole answer.
Silence. A long one. ISABELLE's fingers find the relics at her belt. She turns one over and over.
ISABELLE (barely audible) To feel clean. To feel like — like something holy could live inside me. (pause) It doesn't. It won't.
NERISSA You don't know that.
ISABELLE (sharp, sudden) I do. (catching herself, softening) I know what I am.
NERISSA is quiet for a moment. When she speaks, there is no judgment in it.
NERISSA I watched my tribe disappear. Not all at once — slowly. Name by name. Until I was the only one left who remembered the shape of what we were. (pause) I know what it is to carry something you cannot confess.
ISABELLE looks up. For the first time — really looks at her.
ISABELLE (whispered) And does it get lighter?
NERISSA (honest) No. (pause) But you stop carrying it alone. If you let someone stand beside you.
ISABELLE studies her face — searching, perhaps, for cruelty, or pity. She finds neither.
ISABELLE Why would you offer that? You don't know me.
NERISSA I know that relic in your hand belonged to someone you wanted to protect. (pause) That's enough for now.
ISABELLE looks down at the relic. Her throat moves.
ISABELLE (very quietly) You should be more careful. About who you offer kindness to.
NERISSA (meeting her eyes) I know. (pause) I'm offering it anyway.
The forest settles around them. Neither moves to leave. ISABELLE's grip on the relic slowly loosens.
