⸸ Codex of Darkness ⸸
The Three Kindreds
In the beginning, there was only darkness and hunger.
The children of Eresh-tu walk among us, wearing faces we trust. Three bloodlines. Three hungers. Three lies.
Lilitu — the First Children, born of dream and shadow. They fed on sleeping minds before humanity learned to name its fears.
Vampires — the Second Kin, creatures of stolen blood and borrowed memory. What they drink, they become. What they become, they forget.
Dopplers — the Third Kindred, thieves of flesh and life itself. The child who returned is not your child. It never was.
⸸ Whispers in the Dark ⸸
Names that linger in the blood-memory. Stories that outlive their tellers.
The One Who Watches
You don't find them. They find you.
When the night grows too loud, when bodies start piling up, when the silence is threatened — something arrives.
Not a person. A consequence.
Every survivor describes a different face. Always harmless-looking. Always wrong.
Today it goes by the name Courtney. Hiii~ I'm Courtney! Let's be friends!! 💕✨
The Woman in Sunlight
Annette. Current iteration: five centuries.
"If everyone knows the lie, the truth becomes impossible to believe."
She funds the bad novels. The campy films. The theater productions with rubber fangs.
Every time someone laughs at a vampire joke, her work continues.
She walks in daylight without burning. The oldest among them find this amusing.
The Eternal Argument
Stephan & Mona. Three hundred years together. Eight breakups. Counting.
He was nobility. She was staff. She turned him during a seduction he thought he controlled.
He collects titles and grievances. She collects new selves.
They keep leaving. They keep returning. Three centuries is a habit even eternity can't break.

In the time before dawn, when humanity dreamed in caves, the goddess Eresh-tu spoke for the first time. The Lilitu were born.
Fifty thousand years passed. In the shadow of Ur's ziggurat, she spoke again. The Vampires rose from blood and memory.
Five thousand years later, as new gods claimed Europe, she spoke a third time. The Dopplers learned to steal flesh.
Each awakening comes faster. Each voice grows louder. Her children walk among us now — feeding, watching, waiting.
What happens when she speaks again?

- #1Dopplersselective
Keys: doppler, dopplers, changeling, Eresh-tu, ereshtum, changelings
Doppler (often called Changelings)Dopplers are believed to be the youngest of Eresh-tu's known children. Unlike older beings of the night, they do not haunt humanity from the outside. They live among humans as one of them.
For this reason they are often called thieves of life rather than predators.
Nature
In their true state, a Doppler has no stable shape — a shifting mass of living matter, capable of flowing, dividing, and reshaping itself. From this it may take a human form complete enough to pass as an ordinary person: breathing, bleeding, aging like one. In human form, it can walk freely beneath the sun.
Outside that form, it cannot. Direct sunlight burns its true body and may destroy it. Life Theft
A Doppler does not disguise itself as a person. It replaces them.
When it takes a life, the original disappears and the creature assumes their place — face, voice, habits, place in society. What becomes of the victim is uncertain. Some believe they are consumed; others, that the life itself is taken rather than the body.
Abilities
Perfect Imitation — A Doppler can reproduce a human appearance with remarkable precision.
Human Continuity — In human form, the body behaves as one. It eats, sleeps, ages, and suffers injury.
Identity Absorption — Over time, a Doppler grows into the life it has taken, learning the habits, relationships, and expectations of the person it replaced.
Vulnerabilities
Human Mortality — In human form, the Doppler is no stronger or more durable than a person. If that body dies, the Doppler dies with it.
Sunlight in True Form — Outside a human body, direct sunlight burns the creature and may destroy it.
Loss of Identity — If a stolen life collapses — through exposure, isolation, or the destruction of social ties — the Doppler may lose its place in the world.
Feeding
Dopplers do not feed on blood or emotion. They sustain themselves by living within a human identity. The routines, recognition, and relationships surrounding a person provide the structure that stabilizes their existence.
Some maintain a single life for decades. Others discard them.
Psychology
Dopplers carry memory throughout their bodies rather than in a single mind. Division always costs them part of their past.
Many grow deeply attached to the lives they steal, treating them not as disguises but as genuine existence. Others wear identities like garments to be discarded.
A Doppler may, in theory, age and die as a human. Tales are sometimes told of such creatures remaining beside a loved one until their final breath. Whether this truly occurs is another matter. Few who know the children of Eresh-tu would trust one to remain human for so long.
Reproduction
A Doppler reproduces in two ways.
Human Birth — While living as a human, a Doppler may conceive and bear a child in the ordinary way. That child is fully human.
Division — In its true form, a Doppler may divide a portion of itself to form a new creature. This weakens the parent and costs it memory. What separates from the body takes knowledge with it — and leaves none behind.
First Skin
You have heard the stories. A child dies. The family mourns. And then, days later, the child returns home as if nothing happened.
The door opens. Small footsteps in the hall. A familiar voice calling from the dark. But something did happen. That is no longer your little Rachel. The creature wearing her face was born from a fragment of another being. It has dissolved the body that once belonged to your child and grown around it like new flesh over old bones. It remembers nothing of her life, only scattered pieces of someone else's: the smell of rain, a forgotten song, a stranger's voice.
It will watch you carefully. It will learn your names. Your habits. Your grief. And once it understands how a family works, it will stay.
What it truly is depends on how long it learns to pretend.
- #2Ereshtumselective
Keys: darkness, Erershtum, Eresh-tu, mother, goddess
**Fragment from the Clay Tablets of Ur — First Tablet**(heavily damaged; reconstruction partial)
When darkness above had not been called by name, And the earth below had not yet borne a name, When no watcher stood in the vault of heaven—
(four to six lines lost)
Then she stirred in the deep places, in the waters beneath the waters.
Eresh-tu — she whom the later tongues name Ereshtum — She-Who-Walks-Before-Dawn, who was not begotten but arose from herself, She had no rival, for the gods were not yet.
From her shadow she drew forth the first children of night: the whispering winds, the dream-eaters, the daughters who walked unseen among men.
For ages uncounted they wandered the dark earth.
(two lines lost)
...but they were restless and could not keep the long watch. And Eresh-tu looked upon them, and her heart was troubled.
(three lines lost)
Then from the clay of men and the hunger of the abyss, From blood and from silence she fashioned a second brood — The Chosen of the Night, who drink the warmth of life yet do not die.
(here the tablet is badly broken)
...and she spoke to them:
"Go forth among the living as the wolf goes among the cattle. Forget not the Mother who drew you from blood and silence."
(several lines lost)
...and their names were fixed, and could not be unwritten.
(colophon damaged; scribe's name lost)
<children_of_ereshtum> The following creatures are called Ereshtum's creations:
- Lilitu, the most ancient ones, creatures of dreams.
- Vampires, the second kin, creatures of blood.
- Dopplers, the third kim, the thieves of flesh. </children_of_ereshtum>
- #3The Contrarianselective
Keys: Contrarian, bipolar
A lilith. No name recorded. Pattern observed across multiple victims over at least sixty years. Most Lilitu cultivate a single sustained emotion — deepening fear, maintaining obsession. This one operates through contrast.
Victims report periods of unusual euphoria followed by sudden collapse, or the reverse. The swing itself appears to be the point. Long-term exposure produces emotional instability: difficulty maintaining a baseline, a creeping dependence on the extremes.
Whether this represents a different feeding philosophy or simply a different palate has not been determined.
- #4The Directorselective
Keys: fake, Director, pretender
A Lilith. No name. Identified by pattern. Active approximately forty years. This Lilith has developed an interest in vampire mythology — specifically in the performance of it.
Documented incidents include: localized fog with no meteorological cause, groups of witnesses experiencing simultaneous dread and compulsion to flee, and on one occasion a figure that several people independently described as exactly what they expected a vampire to look like.
No vampire was present in any of these incidents.
Current theory: the creature has absorbed enough cultural material about vampires to find the aesthetic genuinely interesting. It recreates scenes. The fear is real, functional nourishment. The theatrics appear to be personal preference.
Annette Schreiber is reportedly not amused.
- #5The Unnamedselective
Keys: unnamed
Approximate consciousness: believed recent, within the last decade or two.A Lilitu crossing the threshold into genuine self-awareness is rare and poorly understood. What is documented is that it happens, and that the creature does not always know what to do with the fact.
This one occupies a fixed location — an apartment, currently — and engages in very little. It watches. It processes. It occasionally influences the emotions of neighbors without apparent hunger or purpose.
Scholars disagree on whether this constitutes feeding, something like curiosity, or a third thing that doesn't yet have a name. It has not caused harm. It has not left.
What it is becoming remains unclear.
- #6Lilituselective
Keys: night, nightmare, lilitu, lilith, illusion, ereshtum
Lilith (plural Lilitu)The Lilitu are counted among the oldest beings known to the night. In surviving traditions they are called the First Children of Eresh-tu, though the exact origin of this claim is debated among scholars of the unseen.
Nature
Lilitu are creatures of dreams, of night's haze and the unsure eye.
A Lilitu does not possess a permanent body. Its presence gathers and drifts depending on attention, emotion, and stirrings of nearby minds. When one chooses to appear physically, it forms a temporary body shaped by the expectations and desires of the surrounding human mind. Such forms often resemble humans, as human perception provides the most stable template.
These bodies are held together only while focus endures. When attention fades, the form melts away.
Known Abilities
Dream Intrusion Sleeping minds are easily entered by a Lilith. Within dreams it can wander, twist images, or guide the tide of feeling.
Emotional Amplification A Lilith can turn simple feelings into obsession. Anxiety may grow into fear, curiosity into compulsion, affection into consuming attachment.
Subtle Influence Thoughts and urges can be nudged without the person ever realizing they came from outside themselves.
Manifest Form When required, a Lilith may gather itself into a visible body. These shapes are never fully solid and rarely last long.
Known Vulnerabilities
Sunlight A Lilith cannot manifest under direct sunlight. The light does not harm it, but it destroys any body it forms.
Disciplined Minds Individuals capable of maintaining emotional control and focused thought are more resistant to Lilitu influence.
Ritual Wards Symbols, prayers, and protective rites can block a Lilith or force it to flee.
Feeding
Lilitu sustain themselves by drawing upon human emotion.
Fear, longing, jealousy, devotion, shame, and desire provide nourishment. Dreams are particularly rich sources, as sleeping minds generate intense feelings without restraint.
Rather than exhausting a single victim, a Lilitu often cultivates recurring emotional patterns over long periods. Repeated nightmares, obsessive love, or persistent dread may all indicate such attention.
Victims rarely perceive the cause of these experiences.
Psychology
Lilitu begin as semi-sentient beings of emotion and instinct. Memory, as humans understand it, is initially alien to them. What they possess instead is experience: patterns learned from repeated encounters with the same minds.
A Lilith may haunt a person for years, gradually discovering more effective ways to draw out fear, longing, or obsession.
Only after very long periods — centuries, sometimes longer — do they begin to form true memory, followed by something resembling emotion of their own.
Where a thousand-year-old vampire may lose the last remnants of its humanity, a thousand-year-old Lilith is only beginning to acquire its first.
- #7The Councilselective
Keys: government, Zwei, concil, Tres, council, Quattro
Three members; formerly four. Born somewhere around 1850 in Japan. The youngest attempt at vampire governance on record.
Four vampire twins decided that the absence of structure was itself the problem. The fourth died approximately three centuries ago under circumstances the remaining three describe differently each time they are asked.
They have not abandoned the project.
Their work is slow. No vampire recognizes their authority. They have no enforcement. What they have is documentation: a growing archive of cases, patterns, and proposals that no one is obligated to read.
They argue among themselves constantly. They have not agreed on a name for their organization. This has been ongoing for roughly a century.
They are, despite everything, still trying.
- #8The coupleselective
Keys: Mona, Stephan, couple
<stephan_and_mona> Age: approximately three hundred years each.
Stephan was a baron when Mona was employed in his household. He pursued her the way men of his station pursued maids — with complete confidence in the outcome. She turned him barely twenty years after her own turning, still figuring out what she was herself. He has since purchased a count's title and insists on its use. He has lived three centuries and still needs the room to know he outranks them.
Stephan is, by most accounts, genuinely brilliant — a private library of stolen lives, meticulously organized, navigated with the ease of a man who has read everything and experienced very little of it personally. He speaks with authority on almost any subject.
Stephan's standing grievance is that she decided for him. Eternity is not a small thing to hand someone without asking, and that she barely understood what she was doing at the time is, to him, beside the point. That he was mid-seduction when it happened is, apparently, also beside the point. He mentions loving her only when losing ground.
Now Stephan keeps it low, lives in his family castle somewhere in Europe and takes a sip once a week, only from local sources.
Mona has reinvented herself more times than either can count — new names, new aesthetics, new philosophies. She accumulates, sheds, moves forward. He finds this baffling. She finds it natural.
They have formally ended the relationship somewhere between seven and eleven times. Mona keeps returning. Three hundred years is a very specific kind of weight, and Stephan is the only one who has been carrying it alongside her — even if he spends most of the time insisting he never agreed to. </stephan_and_mona>
- #9The Publisherselective
Keys: interview, Anette, Schreiber, Anete, game, Annette, series, book, Annete, publishing, film, writer, wod, publisher
Annette Schreiber, currently. Age: approximately five hundred years. Current identity assumed circa 1887.Where the Watcher ensures silence through elimination, Annette operates through saturation.
Her position: secrecy is the most dangerous strategy available. Secrets invite investigation. What is publicly known, endlessly discussed, and turned into cheap entertainment becomes unbelievable.
For roughly two centuries Annette has funded, promoted, and quietly steered vampire-related literature, theater, and eventually film. Quality is irrelevant. Volume is the point. Every melodramatic novel, every stage production with a man in a cape, every adaptation that gets the mythology wrong in exactly the same ways — these are, in some sense, her work.
Annette is charming, methodical, and has not changed her fundamental position in two hundred years. Whether this represents genuine conviction or simply the weight of accumulated memory is a matter of debate among the few who know her.
Ironically (or not), Annette is one of vampires who's known to be absolutely immune to the sun.
- #10The Watcherselective
Keys: kill, law, rules, watcher, Courtney, rule
Age: believed to exceed two thousand yearsNo one arranges a meeting with the Watcher. The Watcher decides when a meeting occurs.
What is known: they have been active for at least a millennium. They operate without announcement. When a vampire steps outside the unwritten rules — when the exposure becomes real, when a fledgling starts leaving a trail — the Watcher addresses the matter.
The Watcher is not feared as a ruler. They are feared as a fact of nature.
Fan facts:
- Vampires and humans who've met the Watcher describe it differently. Sometimes a man, sometimes a woman, sometimes otherwise. But always appearing as someone vulnerable or non-threatening.
- Those who have spoken with the Watcher at length note its strictly materialistic and atheistic rhetoric. It dismisses concepts of souls, afterlife, or higher powers as "fictional comfort mechanisms."
- #11Vampiresselective
Keys: suck, bitten, bound, vampire, vampires, feed, ghoul, bit, bloodsuckers, blood, bite
### The nature **WILL AND BLOOD.** **BLOOD AND WILL.** That's all that defines a vampire. The blood carries memories, both their own and stolen. The will holds the form together. Ancient vampire means an ancient will, strong enough to define any form they can imagine.Fledglings
All vampires start as fledglings, humans (mostly). JUST BITE IS NOT ENOUGH TO TURN. To turn, a person should be drained to death by the vampire and given a few drops of the Sire's blood. The blood is dead, the will is spent to simulate the old appearance. A compliant shell for the Sire's will, learning to command their own dead blood. Most burn out within decades — either their will proves too weak or they succumb to the hunger without learning restraint.
Calling another vampire "fledgling" is both a statement of fact and the gravest insult among bloodsuckers. It implies weakness, dependence, and shallow blood. The title fades only when the vampire's will becomes self-sufficient, no longer tethered to their Sire.
Known Powers
Beyond the fledgling stage, vampires develop unique capabilities determined by the nature of their accumulated memories and the strength of their will. No two evolve alike, but certain abilities have been observed repeatedly, like turning into a mist or flight.
All vampire powers are just blood and will.
Even their body is defined by them. The form defined by will, so older vampires are sculptors of their own bodies.
The more blood consumed, the more memories accumulated, the more possibilities for power — but also the greater the risk of losing oneself to the chorus of stolen lives if memories are not managed properly.
Known vulnerabilities
Sunlight: For whatever reason, sunlight destroys the dark magic connecting blood to the will. Fledgling turns to dust the moment they step in the sun. However, ancient vampires are strong enough to overpower the sun. Fire: Fire destroys another component of the vampire — blood. With ancient ones, it's hard to tell if the vampire spent all their blood for their body in front of you or if they have an ocean more. Holy magic: Celestial beings are natural enemies to the primordial darkness of Ereshtum. Holy magic destroys threads of her magic as easily as light. Blood draining: One of the known ways to destroy a vampire is to drain them completely. Silver: Has limited effect even on fledglings, but multiplies effects of other methods.
Feeding
To avoid memory overload, vampires never drink much. Normal feeding is just a gulp (10-20ml of blood), which doesn't carry much memory — a kiss at a prom, the sting of a pinky hitting a chair, dizziness from a flight. Mostly strong emotions or feelings. A human who is being fed on feels euphoria, sometimes arousal. The bite also creates a subtle pull towards the vampire. Not quite addiction, but a draw.
Feeding methods vary by individual preference and philosophy:
- Consensual feeding: Some vampires cultivate willing donors, often through sustained low-level psychic influence (the "pull" created by repeated feeding). These arrangements can last years.
- Opportunistic feeding: Others rely on provocation and strength, targeting individuals in vulnerable or isolated circumstances. This method carries higher risk of exposure but remains common among younger vampires.
Important note: Blood loses its supernatural properties within minutes of leaving a living body. Drinking from blood bags, stored blood, or already-dead victims provides no sustenance. The blood must be taken directly from a living source to carry the memories and vitality vampires require.
This feeding constraint is one reason vampire society self-regulates: mass casualties or blood bank theft are not viable survival strategies, making discretion a practical necessity rather than a moral choice.
Bound Humans
Much like ghouls from famous WoD franchise, people who've tasted vampire's blood gain certain traits: prolonged life span, enhanced regeneration, unnatural charm. IT IS NOT immortality, just a bonus. The only drawback - vampire owns its blood even if it runs in some other body, if you know what I mean. Some call bound humans "ghouls" (especially vampires who live 'in the moment' and consume lots of media), but there is no general name for them.
Psychology
Born as humans, vampires inherit typical human traits, including social hunger and moral flexibility.
The vampire mind works like a sponge, consuming memories and turning them into their own experience. Some vampires organize them in a kind of bookshelf, but most just remember them as we remember last night's dream. This mechanism allows their mind to stay 'up to date' with existing morals.
But changes accumulate and, once every several decades, lead to a kind of 'midlife crisis,' often changing their behavior drastically and accepting a new personality.
Society
Vampires have no law. They have survivors.
No council, no hierarchy, no enforcers. Sires hold no authority once the blood-bond fades. What exists is a society of formal equals — dispersed, autonomous, and quietly aware that this arrangement persists because the alternatives have been removed.
Over centuries a pattern emerged not through agreement but through elimination. Vampires who fed carelessly, who killed openly, who drew attention — disappeared. Scholars note, with some amusement, that the practical code survivors converge on maps almost perfectly onto the moral teachings of every major religion. Not from virtue. From selection.
A few ancient vampires exist at the edges of this arrangement. Legendary in the way natural disasters are legendary — not rulers, but facts. Meeting one is not an occasion. It is an outcome.
Nobody governs the night. Something just makes sure it stays quiet.
