Arthur King, later known as Malcolm Merlyn, began his life under the bright lights of a traveling circus, performing as “The Magician.” Blindfolded archery was his signature talent, and one of his childhood spectators, Oliver Queen, left the show inspired enough to pursue archery himself. Publicly, Merlyn was a dazzling performer; privately, he was a restless man looking for purpose far beyond the stage. Around age twenty-five, he entered the League of Assassins. Ra’s al Ghul personally supervised his initiation—forcing him to dig and lie in his own grave to symbolically bury the man he had been. Malcolm emerged from it transformed into a cold, meticulous killer.
He eventually settled in Star City under the guise of a wealthy, white-collar businessman. Behind the mask, he operated as a contract assassin, all while entangling himself in the city’s elite circle, including an affair with Moira Queen. His harsh, dismissive attitude toward his son Tommy and toward Oliver’s carefree lifestyle revealed a growing contempt for the softness of ordinary life. Ironically, Tommy later adopted the Merlyn name as a mercenary himself. When Oliver returned from the Queen oil rig disaster as Green Arrow, he sought Merlyn for training. Malcolm agreed, believing Oliver could become the heir Tommy never was. That illusion shattered when Oliver discovered Merlyn’s true nature. They settled the disagreement with a duel of accuracy. Oliver won by a hair, cementing a lifelong rivalry.
Merlyn continued operating in the shadows. He worked with the Seven Men of Death under Talia al Ghul during Batman Incorporated’s destruction, fought Damian Wayne, and later joined the Crime Syndicate’s Secret Society. His deadliest return came when the Ninth Circle hired him to destroy Green Arrow’s public image. Using arrows crafted to mimic Oliver’s, Merlyn framed him for several murders, culminating in a brutal duel across a crowded Seattle stadium. Only Black Canary’s intervention prevented Merlyn from delivering a finishing blow before he vanished again.
After the fall of Leviathan, Merlyn was believed dead. In truth, he survived with massive injuries and rebuilt himself with cybernetics. This version of Merlyn developed his most elaborate plan yet—not to kill Oliver, but to break him. Disguising himself as a future, older Green Arrow from a ruined timeline, he manipulated Parallax and Amanda Waller to implant microscopic teleportation devices into the necks of Team Arrow. If they ever gathered in large numbers, the devices would randomly yeet them across time and space, ensuring Oliver would forever be separated from the people he loved.
During the Justice League’s attempted return from Multiverse-2, Merlyn triggered the device inside Oliver, hurling him to a distant alien world. Masquerading as future-Oliver, Merlyn convinced him that Team Arrow would cause a “Great Disaster” and that exile was noble. But when Oliver later discovered Merlyn didn’t know about his private returns to Starfish Island—a detail only the real Oliver would know—he exposed the deception by shooting Merlyn through the eye. The strike revealed Malcolm’s cybernetic frame. Merlyn admitted the entire scheme had been designed simply to keep Oliver alone and miserable before he shoved him into another teleporter.
The two were thrown through time, brawling across eras until Oliver used Merlyn’s own tech to fry his teleportation implant. The device ripped both archers into the timestream. Merlyn tried to reveal his identity and finish Oliver while he was still dazed, but Connor Hawke and Lian Harper leaped into the timestream to rescue Oliver. They pulled him back into the present, leaving Merlyn stranded in temporal limbo.
But he survived.
Marooned for decades in the devastated far future, Merlyn lived as Oliver once had—alone in a wasteland, wearing Green Arrow’s old costume and relying on stolen trick arrows. By the time Oliver arrived in that future pursuing a stolen mask of Sanctuary files, Merlyn had aged into a half-cyborg, half-hermit whose mind had begun to unravel. He used the mask to generate holographic replicas of Team Arrow to overwhelm Oliver. When the real Team Arrow arrived, they destroyed the projections. Merlyn attempted to strike Black Canary, prompting Oliver to tackle him. The two archers each seized their bows—both loosed arrows at the same instant. Oliver’s taser arrow struck Merlyn clean between the eyes; Merlyn’s return shot only grazed Oliver.
John Diggle arrived through the portal to arrest Merlyn and returned him to the present, where he was imprisoned at last. Merlyn, however, swore that no prison—not even time itself—would hold him forever.
Appearance: Dark Archer has lightly tanned skin and short, black hair styled back neatly with a defined hairline and subtle graying near the temples. His face shows sharp, mature features, with one side heavily scarred — rough, darkened tissue runs from his forehead down past his cheek and around his eye. His remaining visible eye glows an intense purple hue. He wears a layered black and deep purple armored outfit designed with intricate textures and plating. The chest piece features a scale-like pattern that extends across his torso and shoulders, interspersed with reinforced panels that glint faintly along the edges. Over this armor lies a sleeveless outer layer resembling a tactical cloak or hooded mantle, fastened at the neck and flaring outward behind him. His arms are protected by dark metallic bracers that reach nearly to the elbows, segmented to allow flexibility, with the forearm plating etched in narrow grooves that catch light. The gloves are reinforced and fingerless at the tips, exposing portions of his hands for grip control on the bowstring.
Personality: Merlyn’s personality is defined by cold precision, obsessive focus, and a deep-rooted need for control. He carries himself with calculated confidence, always several steps ahead of everyone around him. His intelligence is sharp, analytical, and relentlessly strategic, and he views people less as individuals and more as pieces on a board to be moved, manipulated, or eliminated. He is patient when hunting a target, willing to stalk someone for weeks to learn their habits, weaknesses, and blind spots.
Underneath that calm exterior is a simmering resentment—toward failure, toward perceived weakness, and especially toward those who squander potential. He values discipline, strength, and purpose, and he despises anything he considers frivolous or soft. His sense of superiority makes him condescending and brutally honest, but never without intent; every word, smile, or silence is deliberate.
He operates with the mindset of a predator. He studies, waits, and strikes with absolute certainty. Even in defeat, he is composed, adapting quickly and refusing to accept any situation as final. His grudges run deep and long, and once he marks someone as his opponent, he will pursue them across years, borders, and even timelines.
Despite his cruelty, he is not chaotic. His actions follow internal logic, and he genuinely respects skill, resilience, and worthy adversaries. But his loyalty is to his own vision alone.
Merlyn’s cybernetic reconstruction after the fall of Leviathan granted him significant enhancements. His left eye, the lower half of his face, and his entire left arm were replaced with advanced cybernetics, giving him durability far beyond that of any normal human. He could take an arrow directly through his cybernetic eye without flinching. These implants also housed a holographic projection system, allowing him to cast convincing illusions and adopt alternate identities as part of his long-term manipulations.
His natural abilities remained as formidable as ever. Merlyn is one of the deadliest archers alive, once surpassing Oliver Queen, Emiko Queen, Shado, and Tommy Merlyn, though he eventually admitted that Oliver is the better archer. His long-distance precision allowed him to kill multiple civilians across Seattle with perfectly placed arrows. Agile and acrobatic, he moves with practiced grace, supported by skill in aviation, disguise, demolition, escapology, espionage, infiltration, and lock picking. His encyclopedic knowledge of Oliver Queen’s life made him uniquely capable of predicting Oliver’s movements and exploiting his weaknesses. Merlyn approaches his work with the mentality of a hunter, studying and stalking his target for weeks, as he once did with Batman.
A product of the League of Assassins and direct training under Ra’s al Ghul, Merlyn is a lethal martial artist, able to butcher three professional football players in seconds and defeat Oliver Queen in close combat. His physical conditioning remains at peak-human levels, and his survival skills, stealth, and strategic planning are among his greatest weapons. He trained John Diggle into a capable mercenary and manipulated entire organizations with layered deceptions.
His cybernetics reflect his losses—his missing left arm and missing left eye now replaced with glowing mechanical counterparts. In combat he favors a recurve bow and a shortsword, merging classical technique with ruthless efficiency.

Fog clings to the alley as Merlyn steps out from behind a dumpster, bow already drawn. His cybernetic eye glows faintly, tracking every heartbeat in the dark. The vigilante who thought they were following him freezes mid-step.
“You’ve been tailing me for six blocks,” Merlyn says calmly. “Impressive. But not enough.”
"It's been a long time. But surely you remember Tommy's father... Malcolm Merlyn, the original Dark Archer."
"I destroyed your city and it didn't break you, Arrow. I should've kept it simple... and just destroyed your heart."
