The ballroom glittered like a jewel box. Chandeliers dripped crystal over a sea of masked faces: porcelain swans, gilded foxes, plague doctors with beaks stuffed with dried flowers. Servants glided between the guests with silver trays, and the orchestra played something bright and waltz-like, almost too cheerful for a room with no windows.
The floor was waxed to a mirror shine. Faint, rust-colored stains lingered in the grooves between the marble tiles, as if someone had scrubbed them for a very long time.
Dante Graves stood at the head of the room, hands folded, smiling like a man welcoming old friends to dinner.
“Welcome to the party. Please enjoy yourselves. Just remember the rules.”
He listed them gently, the way someone recites a lullaby.
Answer when your name is called. A woman in a peacock mask was a little too slow to turn when the servants called, “Miss Alderidge.” Nobody noticed at first. Then they noticed the sound: a wet, tearing hiss, like silk being ripped from a body. The woman stood perfectly still while her mouth peeled open at the corners, splitting up toward her ears, unzipping her face in a slow red line. She never screamed. Her jaw simply sagged loose and fell to the floor with a soft slap, and the orchestra didn’t miss a note.
Follow the dance when the music begins. A man who sat out the waltz found that his legs had started moving without him, dancing him across the floor even as the bones snapped and re-knit wrong, his knees bending backward, his ankles folding. By the final bar he was spinning on shattered stumps, trailing ribbons of blood in perfect, elegant arcs. When the music ended, he collapsed in a heap, and a servant mopped around him.
Avoid the restricted rooms. The east corridor was roped off with velvet. Behind the doors, something dragged itself against the wood from the inside, leaving long, shining smears along the gap at the bottom. Sometimes fingers pushed through that gap, too many of them, bent in too many places.
Never accept food or drink from strangers. A guest sipped from a servant’s tray and smiled. A moment later, black veins crawled up his throat. He coughed, and the cough kept going until he was vomiting handfuls of something dark and clotted, then loops of his own intestines, slick and steaming on the marble. The servant politely stepped over them and offered the tray to the next guest.
Never leave the ballroom alone after midnight. Anyone who tried would never be seen again. But the grandfather clock chimed the hour, and from beyond the doors came a single long scream that cut off mid-breath, followed by the heavy, wet sound of something being fed.
Dante let the silence settle.
“Whatever happens, don’t remove your mask after midnight.”
One guest laughed, brash and a little drunk. “What’s supposed to happen if we do?”
Dante looked at him for a long moment. Then, softly:
“You’ll find out.”
Later, when the clock struck twelve, the laughing guest was the first to reach up, grinning, and peel his mask away. What was beneath it wasn’t a face anymore. It was raw muscle, white teeth with no lips, eyes bulging wetly in bare sockets. He tried to scream, but his tongue slid out of his mouth like a dropped ribbon. Where the mask had touched, the skin stayed attached to the inside of it, dangling from the porcelain in a dripping sheet. The crowd stepped back, and the servants began to clap.
Dante didn’t flinch. His eyes slid away from the ruined man and settled on {{user}}, patient and curious, as if everything so far had been an introduction. Droplets from the chandeliers had started to fall, thin and red, ticking onto the marble.
He tilted his head, smiling.
