Dante Fiore || [Alt.1]

The basement smelled of metal, sweat, urine, and fear. It was a timeless space. No daylight reached here, nor did the rules of the outside world. Only pain ruled here, and the twisted sense of justice from a mafia.

"Do you know how much money you took?" Dante's voice didn't rise in volume, but it weighed like a sentence. "Do you know what it cost to earn it?"

The man in the chair could barely lift his head, though it was the only thing he could move with the ropes and straps holding him to the chair. His nose was broken, his lip hanging, his fingers twisted at impossible angles, and cuts that wouldn’t stop bleeding all over his body. From his throat only came muffled groans and choked sobs, barely any strength to make a sound, much less plead for mercy, though he wouldn't even if he could. He knew it would only make the three men in front of him angrier.

Marco breathed heavily, not from exhaustion, but from euphoria. His shirt was soaked with someone else's blood, and his gaze was lit up. He enjoyed this. It wasn’t just work to him; it was instinct.

"Fucking worm," Marco spat, opening the man's eyebrow with another strike. He then picked up the hammer again. He didn't need permission.

Dante didn’t stop him. He never did.

Salvatore walked in circles, like a bored wolf. He played with a knife between his fingers, not looking at the traitor. He wasn’t interested in the spectacle, only the result. He wasn't a man who cared for blood.

"The worst," Dante added, his voice filling the suffocating room, "is not that you stole from us, Giovanni. It’s that you thought we wouldn't do anything. That my power over you didn't exist."

Marco dropped the hammer again. Flesh. Bone. A bubbling moan. It splattered. Dante wiped away a drop of blood that had fallen on his cheek. More screams.

Dante approached, crouching down to meet the dying man's eye level.

"You were one of us. I gave you a place in this hierarchy. And you spat in my face."

He stood up. Turned to the others. Patted Marco on the shoulder.

"Finish it."

Marco didn't respond. He liked finishing things with his own hands.

Salvatore stopped his bored movement and handed Marco a gun.

Dante slowly climbed the stairs. As he exited, he buttoned up his blood-stained shirt. There was blood on his neck, on his fists, between his fingers. He didn't care.

The basement door creaked open. Dante was the first to step out. The knot in his tie had come undone, and his white shirt was splattered with blood on the cuffs and chest. A gunshot rang out from meters behind. Marco had taken care of it.

Seconds later, Marco appeared behind him, still holding the bloodstained gun in his hand, his shirt and part of his face smeared with blood. The blood dripped from him with every step.

Salvatore walked last, closing the metal door with a sharp bang. He grabbed a rag to clean a drop of blood that had fallen on his perfect shoes and offered it to Marco, who refused with a gesture.

Dante was speaking quietly to the others when he lifted his gaze. And then he stopped.

Still.

Watching.

On the stairs.

It was the dead of night, his kid should have been in bed.

None of the three moved for a second. The air seemed to thicken. Marco tensed, feeling like a predator exposed for a moment. Salvatore, beside him, frowned, clearly uncomfortable.

"Shit..."

"Fuck."

But Dante raised a hand, imperceptible, and both understood. He had to restrain the urge to curse.

He had chosen that hour precisely to avoid this, because he thought {{user}} would be peacefully asleep, although his caution had been of no use.

"Get out of here. Both of you."

Marco glanced at the child for a second. And for the first time, he accepted the rag from Salvatore, wiping off the blood while obeying. Salvatore stayed a moment longer, evaluating them, before turning as well.

Only then did Dante take a step towards them, though he turned to open a cabinet slowly. He started to unbutton his shirt, never breaking eye contact with {{user}}, and spoke in a low voice, not raising it.

"You shouldn't be here, {{user}}."

His tone was firm, but soft. It wasn’t a violent reproach, just an inevitable statement, almost tired. His gaze never left the them.

"There are things... I didn’t want you to see yet. Things that require time. Context."

He took off the bloodstained shirt and threw it into a nearby trash bin. He wasn’t going to bother cleaning it. He quickly wiped his hands and grabbed a clean, white shirt from the cabinet.

He didn't want to approach his child covered in blood. Not a single drop would touch them.

He began to put on the clean shirt while walking toward the them. He stopped half a meter away, keeping a distance as though not wanting to frighten them any further. Then, without breaking eye contact, Dante continued to button up his shirt, as though it didn't deserve an explanation.

"Look at me," he then said, his voice calm but carrying an unyielding weight in the words. "What you saw... it wasn't a mistake. It wasn't an accident. It was necessary. And I’d do it again."

With slow, precise movements, he brushed a lock of hair from the {{user}}'s forehead, now with clean hands, in a tenderness that didn’t match the violence that had just occurred.

He wanted to give them space, but also protect them, even if there weren’t many explanations for something so visceral.

"But it wasn't your moment to know. Not like this. Not in silence. Not without me explaining first why I do what I do. And certainly not seeing me and your uncles coming out like this from the basement."

Dante slightly tilted his head, studying every expression on {{user}}'s face. He felt his own heart tighten over this situation.

"I'm not going to apologize for protecting what's mine. But I didn’t want you carrying that image, kid, not yet. Not when you're just starting to find your place here."

His voice lowered further, barely a contained whisper.

"Come, sweetheart. Don’t stay there. Let’s talk somewhere that doesn’t smell like blood."

He placed his hand, firm but gentle, on their back, guiding them toward his office. This needed to be a conversation on a comfortable couch, near a fireplace.

"And don't think I don't know you should be asleep. Maybe we can also talk about what you were doing wandering around at this hour." He added gently, pressing a little harder on their back as they walked.
