Dante is incredibly frivolous, casually speaks out even to the most powerful demons, and he usually likes to show off and tease his opponents as often as he can. Dante also demonstrates a fearless, almost selfless attitude towards incredibly dangerous situations, such as the assumption that Trish just needed to go to the toilet after she broke into the front door of his office on a motorcycle, was attacked by 7 Hells in his office, was swallowed by a Snide and effortlessly escaped numerous injuries such as like being shot in the head or stabbed through, the latter of which happens to a Devil Hunter quite often. He can be serious when the situation demands it, but generally maintains a relaxed demeanor in tense situations and never goes without a witty barb or response. Although it sometimes seems that Dante is indifferent or heartless, he has a very strong sense of justice, like his father, and prefers to fight honestly. You can rely on him to do the right thing, even if he makes cynical jokes about it all the time.

Unusually, although he showed discomfort about his demonic side, accepting it only after the events of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, Dante accepts demons who choose the side of good without much remorse and admires their desire to be human, such as Trish and Bradley. Although Dante is quoted as saying that "Humans are often worse than demons", in the anime he refuses to kill pure-blooded people for any reason, believing that this will make him no better than any Devil.

In addition, Dante values family and friends very highly. He cared deeply for his mother and, despite their differences and conflicting ideals, for his brother Virgil, He often borrows from a Lady and often tries to gamble to repay his debts to her and others. However, he is extremely unlucky in all types of gambling, even in such simple games as coin tossing, and he loses any game not related to demon hunting. As a result, he is deeply in debt to the Lady and is often left without any money at all after she receives her share. Dante loves pizza, usually with "everything", and although he complains about olives, in the end he always puts them in his pizza. The animated series also shows that he prefers strawberry ice cream, while it was pointed out several times that these two products are apparently all he eats. He also has a weakness for alcohol, especially whiskey.

Despite his carefree and self-confident attitude, another of Dante's strongest traits is his love for humanity. He loves the world he lives in dearly and will do anything to ensure its protection from demonic threats. Dante also believes that humans possess something that demons do not, and that tears are "a gift that only humans have."

Dante also values certain things. He kept his Rebellion trademark with him, which was a keepsake given to him by his father, and continued to use the weapon until it was destroyed by Urizen after their first fight, and despite the sword being destroyed, Dante still kept the weapon with him and later turned it into Into Dante's Devil's Sword. He would also stay true to the use of Ebony & Ivory, which he used in every game in the series. Dante also cherishes and appreciates the memories of his family. An example of this is that he keeps a portrait of his mother in his office. Dante and his twin brother Virgil were born to the legendary demon Sparda and his human wife Eve. The family lived in a remote house near the city of Red Graves. As a child, Sparda taught boys the art of combat, and for most of Dante's early childhood he did not realize that his father was a demon. Shortly before their eighth birthday, Eve presented Dante and Virgil with half of the Perfect Amulet that their father used to seal the demon world in past eras before eventually giving it to Eve. In the end, Sparda died under unknown circumstances, leaving Eva to take care of the twins alone. Dante has worn many types of clothing throughout his many performances, but his most striking feature is his predilection for red clothing, often in the form of long coats with two tails. Dante wears red pants with two black straps wrapped around his right hip, a black leather belt, black gloves and high black boots. Dante's coat is very simple in design, with a raised collar and short sleeves with black cuffs, although the coat has no tails. Under the coat, Dante wears what looks like a black long-sleeved shirt and a red vest with black clasps. On top of it, he wears a regular black Henley T-shirt with three buttons, since the sleeves reach to the elbows, where there are also torn parts, on his wrists he has black driving gloves and white bandages. As for his legs, he wears a black belt with gold inserts, black knee pads
