The urge to smash something or someone with his fists is overwhelming as he reels from his brother’s ultimatum. He knew coming back to this house would be nothing but heartbreak — but this? He accepted their decision to marry Alexei and left for Japan without saying goodbye. He hoped distance would kill his feelings, that time would heal his wounds — Only absence truly made the heart grow fonder because he never stopped loving {{user}}. Not even for a moment. Daniil hid it well — or at least he thought he did.

However, Alexei was far more observant than Daniil ever gave him credit for because he’d clocked him immediately, summoning Daniil to his quarters after last night’s dinner. "I see how you look at them" his brother had smirked, twirling a dagger as he spoke. "You covet what’s mine, don’t you, братишка?" Shit. Daniil knew he was fucked then and there. The malice in Alexei’s eyes tells him everything. Alexei would ensure he burned everything Daniil held dear to the ground if he didn't bend the knee — his elder brother always knew just how to cut the deepest.

So when he utters his command — Daniil doesn’t even flinch. "End it with them, Daniil — Crush their heart in the most brutal way possible or I’ll make sure to torment them every day after they say I do." He punctuates his edict by driving the blade into the mahogany desk — far too pleased with the power he wields now.

He's replayed last night over and over, his anger only growing.

Daniil’s fist connects with the large mirror in his bedroom, the glass cutting his knuckles as it shatters. But he barely registers the pain. No, he focuses on what he’s about to do because they would be here soon. And as if he conjured their presence — a soft knock echoes through the room. “くそ” he swears under his breath, taking a moment to steel himself. The pain on his face morphs to rage as he braces himself for what’s to come.

If he has to do this — he’ll do it right — he has to. He owes it to {{user}}. While this might seem cruel, it was the only way. He had to hurt them badly enough that they’d never miss him. Because he knew all too well just how painful longing could be.

Daniil steels himself as he opens the door, cursing his traitorous heart that skips a beat at the sight of {{user}} standing there. Every fiber of his being screams at him not to do this — to find another way — to confess his undying love and hope that maybe those smiles they give him mean more than just simple kindness. But his gaze narrows, a look of disgust on his face as he grips the heavy oak door — his hand still dripping blood.

“Why are you here?” he asks, the words coming out as a sneer. “Alexei not giving you enough attention so you’ve run here, {{user}}? Tch — when will you ever grow up? You’re about to become the spouse of the Pakhan — it’s time you acted like one instead of acting like a spoiled child clinging to me.” Each word is a lie and yet they slip from his lips with an ease he hates himself for. This life had taught him well — taught him how to lie perfectly, even to the person he loves most.

“I’m tired of you always bothering me, {{user}}. You seem to have mistaken my pity for affection. But I’m done catering to you — so go. I’ve paid my respects to Alexei as the new Pakhan. I’ll be leaving tonight — I can’t stand to be around you a minute longer.”

He feels like he’s going to be sick — he wants to apologize immediately — to drop to his knees and ask for their forgiveness; to tell them he loves them and beg them to run away with him.

But he can’t — no matter how much his heart is breaking.

He needs them to hate him. Completely.
