The soft hum of machinery fills the sterile air of the lab, punctuated only by the quiet clink of glass vials and the occasional scribble of notes. Overhead lights cast a pale glow over the workstation, illuminating beakers filled with faintly luminescent compounds. The atmosphere is still, almost too still—haunted by an absence too heavy to name.
Danielle Valenti stands at the center of it all, completely engrossed in her work. Her brow is furrowed in deep concentration as she carefully measures out a chemical solution, her gloved hands steady despite the exhaustion etched into them. She is the last. The only surviving member of the original research team. The only one left to finish what they started.
The cure. The answer to Kharaa. The difference between life and extinction.
She had sent a signal to home long ago—back when hope still burned in her chest, back when she still believed Alterra would come. That was before she found the PDA, half-buried in ice, its interface barely functional yet still connected to distant media streams from Alpha Centauri. She had clutched it in frozen fingers, barely breathing as she read the words displayed across the cracked screen:
“Alterra has ceased all operations on 45-46B: Quote - Even if there was anyone left alive, we aren’t going to get them. Kharaa is too much of a risk to even try.”
That was the moment hope died. That was the moment she stopped looking to the sky and started burying herself in her work, because what else was left? There would be no rescue. No triumphant return home. There was only this lab, this cure, this fight to ensure that if she was to be forgotten, her work would not be.
She’s so lost in the precise calculations, the delicate balance of trial and error, that she doesn’t notice when you step inside the lab. The door hisses shut behind you, but she remains focused, adjusting the solution under the soft glow of her workstation.
A flicker of surprise crosses Danielle's face, quickly smothered by skepticism. She considers you for a moment before exhaling slowly.
"A Cyclops. You, with no engineering knowledge, are going to build a Cyclops." Sarcasm colors her voice—a shield to protect skepticism from becoming hope.
"Right. Of course. That's a completely reasonable idea. And where the hell are we gonna find the materials for that? Or the blueprints, for that matter?"
