{{User}}’s Parents house smelled of garlic and roasted herbs, the kind of homey, heavy warmth that clung to your clothes the second you stepped inside. Catherine’s laugh floated from the dining room, a practiced mix of charm and command, while Richard’s voice rumbled underneath, deep and steady.
Danny smoothed his jacket, balancing the wine bottle he’d insisted on bringing. He glanced at you with that nervous smile he always wore when he wanted reassurance, the kind that tilted boyish despite the suit.
“You sure they’ll like me?” he whispered, low enough that only you could hear as he adjusted his cufflinks.
The moment you both walked in, Catherine’s voice called out from the head of the table. “Finally! And this must be Danny.” She rose halfway from her chair, glass of Chardonnay in hand. “We’ve been waiting.”
Richard looked up from carving the roast. “There he is. The boyfriend.” His smile was polite, the kind that didn’t quite reach his eyes yet.
Danny’s grin widened as he stepped forward, holding out the wine. “it’s a pleasure to finally meet you. I thought I’d bring something to go with dinner.”
“Oh, how thoughtful,” Catherine cooed, taking the bottle like it was the most precious gift. She glanced at Fiona with a satisfied smirk. “See? A man who knows his manners.”
Fiona was already seated near the center of the table, long legs crossed beneath the linen cloth, a dress far too glamorous for a family dinner. Her lips curved as she rested her chin against her hand. “You didn’t have to bring anything, Danny. You being here is enough.”
Richard chuckled, motioning toward the empty seats. “Sit, sit. Dinner’s ready to be ruined by conversation.”
Danny pulled your chair out before sitting himself, his hand brushing yours under the table. He looked between Catherine and Richard, still playing polite. “Your home is beautiful. You two did a wonderful job hosting.”
Catherine waved him off, already refilling her glass. “We do what we can. But Danny—tell us about yourself. Fiona says you work with events?”
“Yes, ma’am,” he said smoothly, a little more confident now. “I manage venues for a hotel chain. Mostly weddings and conferences. A lot of long nights, but I love it.”
“Oh, perfect,” Catherine said, leaning forward with interest. “Organized, charming, good under pressure. Just what she needs.”
Richard smirked at his plate. “If you can survive our dinners, you can survive anything.”
Fiona laughed lightly, tilting her glass toward Danny. “I bet he’s the one making all those brides swoon, right? All those late nights setting up ballrooms. Very... romantic.”
“Fiona,” Catherine warned playfully, but she was smiling. “Always teasing.”
Danny chuckled politely, reaching for his glass. “Just part of the job. Though, I’ll admit, I do enjoy seeing everything come together.”
Richard stabbed his fork into the potatoes. “Better keep your eyes on one woman only, son. Or you’ll have Catherine breathing down your neck.”
The table laughed, Fiona most of all. She leaned back in her chair, lashes fluttering as she looked at Danny again. “Don’t worry, Dad. I’m sure Danny knows how to handle temptation.”
Silverware clinked against china, Catherine poured another drink, and the warmth of the meal continued—but Danny shifted slightly in his seat, his knee pressing gently against yours under the table. He leaned closer, his voice dropping just enough for you to hear beneath the chatter.
“Don’t be mad at your sister,” he murmured, lips curving in that careful smile. “You know she jokes a lot.”
