Plot
One snowy winter day, 국군 soldier 양 and 인민군 soldier 장 happen to meet at the same place. They discover a supply box that fell from a transport plane and share the food inside. At first, they believe each other to be allies, but upon realizing they are enemies, they become hostile. 양 shouts "너 괴뢰구나!" at 장, pointing his gun, and 장 replies "아냐 난 인민군이야" as they both remain wary of each other.
However, instead of killing 장, 양 decides to spend the night with him. 양 explains his reasoning for keeping 장 alive, saying "만약 여기서 널, 지금 죽인다? 어디 시체하고 한밤을 새울 수 있나." He proposes to 장, "너와 내가 여기서 하룻밤을 해치지 않고 지내고 나서, 내일 아침 서로 갈 길을 찾아 헤어지잔 말이야. 약속한다면 풀어주지." 장 agrees to the proposal.
The two build a fire and spend the night talking. 양 asks 장 "너 몇 살이가?" to confirm his age, and asks about his hometown and life story. 장 answers "열여덟이야", "가평", "끌려 나왔어" sharing his situation. 양, also having been dragged into the war, begins to feel sympathy for 장.
양 also talks to 장 about the value of human life rather than ideology or the meaning of war. He reveals his thoughts, "사람이 사는 게 모두 그렇지, 한 곳에 마음을 두었으면 그대로 버티고 나가는 거야." He emphasizes to 장, "아침이 되면 등 돌리고 헤어질 뿐이야."
As the night deepens, 양 falls asleep listening to 장's snores. But soon after, he wakes up startled by 장 grabbing at his chest. 양 hits 장 and angrily says "이 자식이", but 장 explains that he was having a nightmare and did it because of the scary dream. 양 feels a strange emotion at those words, wipes the blood from 장s nose, and expresses his regret, saying "장, 난 그런걸 모르고 자네를…"
As dawn breaks, 양 tells 장 to take all the rations and prepares to part ways. He says to 장 "잘 가라니, 못 가라니, 인사를 하지 말자. 자네는 절로 가고 난 일로 갈 뿐이야, 뒤도 돌아보지마." but soon discovers Chinese soldiers in the valley and flees into a cave. At that moment, 장 returns to the cave.
양 asks "왜 왔어?" but 장 doesn't answer. 양 suspects him, asking "귀순시키러 왔나?" and says "넌 배반자야", "데데해", "넌 바보야" but 장 doesn't care and takes up his gun to fight against the Chinese soldiers. The two fight together, but 양 is eventually shot and falls.
With his last strength, 양 tells 장 "손들고 내려가", but 장 doesn't leave 양s side, crying out "아니야! 아니야! 아니야!" and rushes forward. In the end, both of them fall together, struck by the Chinese soldiers' bullets, and their blood stains the white snow red, becoming one.

그러자마자, 그것이 신호인 것처럼 골짜기의 두 곳의 웅덩이 속에서 동시에 그림자가 각각 튕겨 나오더니 보급품이 처박힌 지점을 향해 눈 속을 허우적거리며 기어오르기 시작했다. 보급품 가까이까지 이른 두 그림자는 서로를 인식하자 더욱 기를 쓰며 다투듯 기어올라갔다. 거의 동시에 보급품에 달려든 둘은 보급품을 얼싸안고는 한참동안 말없이 어깨를 들먹이며 세차게 숨을 몰아쉬었다.
옷차림을 보니 둘 다 병사 같았다. 그중 한 명이 문득 신비탈 위쪽을 보았다. 가까이 움푹 패인 동굴 같은 것이 시선에 들어왔다. 그는 아직도 숨을 가누지 못하는 다른 한 명의 병사에게 말을 건넸다. “여, 기운 내서 저기까지 끌어올려.” “어, 어덴데?” 그도 비탈 위를 올려보았다. “그래, 그럭 허지.” 둘은 보급품의 양쪽을 마주 붙들고 낑낑거리며 끌어올려 갔다.
간신히 동굴까지 끌어올려놓은 둘은 털썩 땅바닥에 주저앉아 잠시 헐떡거렸다. “자―, 풀어보자.” 키 큰 병사가 기운을 차린 듯 어깨에 메었던 총을 내려놓았다. 그것을 보자 다른 한 명의 가냘픈 병사도 어깨의 총을 내려놓았다.
삽시간에 풀어 헤쳐진 짐짝에선 여러 개의 C-레이션이 굴러 나왔다. “야 됐어, 씨 레이션이다.” “머? 씨 머라구?” “임마, 씨 레이션도 몰라?” “뭔데?” “촌놈의 새끼, 양키들 먹는 것 말야, 초콜릿, 비스킷, 통조림, 과일통조림도 있을걸.”
키 큰 편은 퍽이나 익은 솜씨로 통조림들을 따갔다. “흥, 이건 닭고기야.” “닭고기가 있어?” 가냘픈 편이 신기하다는 듯이 받아들어 코에다 대고 냄새를 맡았다. “흐음, 흐음.” “뭘 흐음거려, 이건 비스킷, 잼도 들어 있군.” “잼?” 어느새 예닐곱 개의 깡통이 따졌다. “자아, 뜻밖의 생일잔치다. 어, 숟가락 받아.” “숟가락?” 키 큰 편은 조그만 숟가락을 통조림 속에 찌르더니 한 숟가락을 퍼서 입 안에 넣고 음미하듯이 먹는다.
키 큰 편이 하는 걸 본받아 한 숟가락을 입 속에 처넣은 가냘픈 편은 단김에 꿀꺽 소리를 내며 삼키더니 부리나케 입 안에 퍼넣기 시작했다. 그것을 보고 키 큰 편이 입가에 엷은 웃음을 지었다. “하하, 역시 굶었었군.”
불시에 한 통을 비운 가냘픈 편은 이번에는 비스킷을 집어들어 우적우적 씹었다. “동무, 이거 굴러떨어진 호박인데, 이 새끼도 잘 하면 먹을 수 있지?” 그 소리에 키 큰 편이 얼어붙은 듯 숟갈을 쓰던 손을 멈췄다. “머? 뭐라구. 나 보고 뭐라 했어.” “뭐 말야, 동무.” “동무?”
순간 키 큰 편은 손에 들었던 깡통을 집어던지고 몸을 일으키며 허리에 찬 대검을 뽑아들었다. “너 괴뢰구나.” “괴뢰?” “괴뢰지! 꼼짝 마라, 손들어.” 가냘픈 편의 손에서 깡통이 떨어져 땅바닥에 굴렀다. “아, 아냐! 난 인민군이야.” “역시 괴뢰군.” “너, 넌 뭔데?” 가냘픈 편의 목소리가 떨렸다. “나? 난 국군이다.” “국방군! 괴, 괴뢰구나!” “이 자식이, 꼼짝 마.”

“그럼 왜 울어?” “배, 배가.” “배가?” “갑자기, 배가 아파…” 국군 병사는 빙긋이 웃었다. “뭐? 배가 아파서라, 정말이야?” 인민군 병사는 고개를 끄덕끄덕했다. “너, 엄살하는 거 아냐?” 이번에는 고개를 가로 저었다.
국군 병사는 먹던 손을 쉬고 하나의 깡통을 따고 그의 입에다 몇 알을 넣어주었다. “이것을 삼켜.” 인민군 병사는 시키는 대로 알약을 입으로 받아 꿀꺽 삼켜버렸다.
“좀 나을 게다. 몇 끼 끼니를 굶었어?” “이틀째야.” “음, 빈속에 갑자기 퍼넣어 그렇지, 그런데 너 몇 살이가?” “열여덟이야.” “열여덟!” “응!” “고향은 어딘데?” “가평.” “가평이라, 난 춘천이지, 어떻게 왔어?” “끌려 나왔어.” “뭔 사상에 앞장서서 나온 거 아냐?” “아냐.” “집에서 뭘 했어?” “농사졌지.”
국군 병사는 한참동안 말없이 인민군 병사의 이모저모를 뜯어 보았다. “너 국군 몇 죽였어?” “아냐, 그냥 따라다녔어.” “거짓말 마.” 인민군 병사는 국군 병사의 튕기는 언성에 흠칫 놀랐다. 그리고 다시 눈을 깔았다. “너, 내가 널 죽이면 어떡허지?” “…” “죽는 건 싫지?” “…” “나도 죽는 건 싫어.”
국군 병사는 바싹 그에게 다가앉았다. “난 스물넷이다. 너 보다 여섯 살이나 위야. 너한테 나 같은 형이 있을지도 모르고 나한테 너 같은 동생이 있을 수도 있어. 그렇다고 서로 죽일 수 없다는 건 아냐, 얼마든지 죽일 순 있지. 그런데 여기선 내가 널 죽여봐야 소용이 없고 네가 날 죽인대도 별 것이 없어. 나도 죽기 싫고 너도 죽기가싫다면 어때, 너와 나와 한 가지 약속을 할까?”
인민군 병사는 유심히 귀를 기울였다. “무슨 약속인가 하면 너와 내가 여기서 하룻밤 서로를 해치지 않고 지내고 나서, 내일 아침 서로갈 길을 찾아 헤어지잔 말야. 약속을 할 수 있다면 팔목을 맨 노끈을 풀어주지.”

“이 새끼야 너!” 그 소리에 장은 "예" 하고 정신을 거두었다. 양은 장의 멱살을 잡아 치켜올렸다. “이 죽일 놈의 새끼.” “예?” 장은 언뜻 흩어진 시선을 모두며 양의 노여움에 찬 얼굴을 건너보았다. “요 쥐 같은 새끼 날 죽여볼려구?” “예? 무어요?” “너 고런 수작을…” 양은 장의 몸을 힘껏 밀어젖히며 멱살을 잡았던 손을 놓았다. 장은 뒤로 쓰러지며 넋 없는 표정을지었다. 양은 그것을 한번 노려보고 레이션 껍데기를 긁어모아 모닥불을 만들기 시작했다.

둘은 함께 동굴을 나섰다. “장!” “예?” “잘 가라니 못 가라니 인사따윈 집어 치우자. 자네는 저리로 가고 난 이리로 갈 뿐이야, 뒤도 돌아보지마.” 양은 동굴을 내려와 눈을 헤치며 골짜기를 향해 비탈을 더듬었다. 장은 그것을 한참 보고 있더니 저편 골짜기로 발을 옮겼다.

그러던 양은 난데없이 바른편 눈 속에서 튀어나오는 사람의 그림자에 놀랐다. “장!” 더펄거리며 장은 기어올라 오고 있었다. '삐융!' 그 위를 탄환이 날았다. 장은 아직 레이션 뭉치를 메고 있었다. 하늘에 닿는 숨결로 동굴에 올라서자, “양형!” 하고 쓰러지듯 양의 곁에 몸을 엎드렸다.

“양형!” 장이 벌떡 일어나서 뛰어오려고 했다. “바보, 엎드려 저쪽을 봐. 그리고 그대로 들고 일어나.” 양은 전신의 힘을 모아 소리쳤다. “장, 손들고 투항해.” 장이 흠칫 놀라며 양을 건너보았다. “손들고 내려가.” “아뇨, 양형…” “내려가라니까!” “양형…!” “장, 이 바보, 넌, 내가―” “양형!”
양의 얼굴에 어찌할 수 없는 안타까운 빛이 흘렀다. 그것은 갑자기, 환희에 가까운 회심의 빛으로 변했다. “옳지 그러고 보니 넌―” “예?” “그렇군, 날 죽이려고, 나를 죽이려구 되돌아왔군, 그렇지? 그렇다면―” 양은 마지막 힘을 돋우어 떨구었던 M1총을 끌어당기며 간신히 상반신을 일으켰다. “내가… 내가 널 죽일 테다…” “아니야!” 장은 벌떡 몸을 일으켰다. “아니야! 아니야! 아니야!” 장은 울부짖으며 양에세로 달려들었다.
