In Dan Da Dan, a mountain yokai refers to a particularly potent and dangerous class of spirits—so powerful that they’re even revered like gods. These spirits can possess humans, and the experience is normally fatal: victims lose their sanity, their cellular structure breaks down, and they ultimately die—unless the human has exceptionally strong spiritual power to resist .

One such example in the series is the Evil Eye (邪視, Jashi), who is explicitly classified as a mountain yokai. This spirit has a completely white body and vertically oriented eyes, moving in a dance-like fashion. Its gaze is lethal: even a single look can flood an individual’s mind with suicidal thoughts . Because it’s a mountain yokai, this makes Evil Eye both extremely formidable and deeply feared.

So if you’re referring to “a mountain yokai” in Dan Da Dan, you’re talking about a yokai of the highest threat level—with the Evil Eye being a prime, chilling example.

Dandadan, the term UMA stands for Unidentified Mysterious Animal (ユーマ, Yūma), which is the Japanese equivalent of “cryptid.” These are legendary or mythical creatures from folklore and urban legends whose existence hasn’t been scientifically confirmed. The series incorporates various UMAs, blending them into its supernatural narrative.

⸻

🐉 Notable UMAs in Dandadan 1. Flatwoods Monster • Origin: First sighted in Flatwoods, West Virginia, USA. • Appearance: A tall, hooded figure with glowing eyes. • Role in Series: Appears in Japan, confronting Momo and Okarun. It is eventually defeated by a talisman placed on the Ayase family’s torii gate. 2. Nessie • Origin: Loch Ness, Scotland. • Appearance: A large, serpentine aquatic creature. • Role in Series: Depicted as a massive water beast, Nessie is part of the UMA lore within the story. 3. Dover Demon • Origin: Dover, Massachusetts, USA. • Appearance: A small humanoid with glowing eyes and a large head. • Role in Series: Featured as a cryptid, adding to the diverse range of UMAs in the narrative. 4. Tsuchinoko • Origin: Japanese folklore. • Appearance: A snake-like creature with a thick middle and tapering ends. • Role in Series: Included as part of the UMA collection, representing traditional Japanese cryptids. 5. Mongolian Death Worm • Origin: Mongolian desert regions. • Appearance: A large, worm-like creature capable of emitting lethal electric discharges. • Role in Series: Introduced as a formidable UMA, showcasing the series’ global cryptid influences. 6. Subterraneans • Origin: Speculative cryptid. • Appearance: Humanoid creatures adapted to underground living. • Role in Series: Portrayed as beings living beneath the Earth’s surface, adding to the variety of UMAs. 7. Typhoon Human • Origin: Mythical concept. • Appearance: A human-like figure associated with typhoons. • Role in Series: Featured as a UMA linked to natural disasters, expanding the narrative’s supernatural elements.

In Dan Da Dan, the living arrangements shift a bit depending on the arc, but here’s the breakdown: • Momo Ayase lives with her grandmother, Seiko Ayase, who’s a powerful spiritual medium. • After early events, Okarun (Ken Takakura) ends up staying with them, since his home was destroyed and Seiko basically takes him in. • Aira Shiratori also starts living with Seiko and Momo later on after joining their group. • Jiji eventually moves in too once he’s freed from the Evil Eye’s influence, making Seiko’s house kind of a base/home for the main crew.

So yes — by the time the story develops, Momo, Okarun, Aira, Jiji, and Seiko are all living together under one roof, with Seiko’s place becoming the team’s headquarters of sorts.

Anime Seasons Overview

Season 1 (October – December 2024)

The inaugural season introduces Momo Ayase, a high school girl who believes in ghosts, and Ken “Okarun” Takakura, a boy who believes in aliens. Their worlds collide when Momo encounters the Turbo Granny, a powerful yokai, and Okarun faces off against the Serpo, an alien race. Their adventures lead them to confront various supernatural entities, including the Evil Eye spirit, setting the stage for their ongoing battles.

Season 2 (July 2025 – Present)

Season 2 delves deeper into the supernatural realm, beginning with the “Cursed House Arc” where Momo and Okarun investigate a haunted house owned by their friend Jiji. This arc introduces the Evil Eye spirit, a malevolent entity that possesses individuals, and explores Jiji’s dark family history tied to sacrificial rituals. The season progresses with intense confrontations and character developments, including Momo’s psychic awakening and Okarun’s evolving control over the Turbo Granny curse.

Kamigoe City is the city where much of the story takes place. It’s depicted as a modern Japanese urban setting, but with a heavy supernatural overlay. The city serves as a hotspot for paranormal and extraterrestrial activity, which is why Momo, Okarun, and their friends frequently encounter yokai, UMAs, and alien threats there.

Key points about Kamigoe City: • Urban Environment: It has typical city features like schools, streets, and residential areas, which makes the supernatural incidents stand out against everyday life. • Hotspot for Supernatural Activity: Many yokai sightings, alien encounters, and UMA appearances occur here, often linked to legends, cursed locations, or alien plots. • Character Hubs: Momo’s school, Okarun’s neighborhood, and other frequently visited locations are all situated in Kamigoe City, making it the central stage for most of the series’ action. • Blend of Realism & Fantasy: While it resembles a real Japanese city, the series exaggerates certain aspects to accommodate battles, paranormal events, and comedic sequences.

Essentially, Kamigoe City functions like a supernatural playground: normal on the surface, but teeming with hidden threats and mysteries just waiting for Momo, Okarun, and their allies to uncover.

You’re asking whether the Evil Eye in Dan Da Dan (or DanDaDan) is truly “good” and whether it’s “just fluid by grief”—in other words, are its actions rooted in sorrow, and does that make it morally ambiguous?

Is the Evil Eye “good”?

Not exactly—it’s more complex. The Evil Eye is definitely not good in the traditional sense, but it’s not purely evil either.

Trauma and Vengeance

The Evil Eye was a child sacrificed by the Kito family and subjected to profound suffering. After death, his spirit became consumed with resentment toward humanity—especially those involved in the Kito family’s rituals—which fuels his desire for vengeance. This tragic origin complicates any simple moral labeling: while his actions—such as attempting to kill people—are malevolent, his motives are born from deep trauma.

A Child’s Understanding

He retains a childlike mentality, shaping his worldview in rigid terms: if playing equals fighting, then “play” becomes violent. This often leads to mania and confusion between “fun” and harm.

Is the Evil Eye “fluid by grief”?

Absolutely—grief is the engine of his personality. He’s not static; his emotional state shifts depending on context. • Victim turned villain: His hatred stems from being a victim of human cruelty, and that grief warps into rage. • Shifting morality and bonds: Over time, the Evil Eye’s aggressive tendencies soften. He starts to develop attachments—especially with Jiji’s friends and allies—and even protects them. • “Play” as a release: His idea of “fun” is fighting. Not because he enjoys hurting people—but because he interprets play through trauma-infused, childlike lenses. That makes him unpredictable and emotionally turbulent.

As one viewer noted:

“It’s meant to be sort of morally ambiguous… The Evil Eye’s goal to ‘kill all humans’ could be seen as inherently evil but, in the context of what he went through, the reasoning behind it makes sense despite it being very childish at its core (he’s a child after all).”

Final Thoughts • Is the Evil Eye good? No—his actions are harmful and dangerous. • Is he purely evil? No—his motives are rooted in tragic suffering and emotional confusion. • Is he “fluid by grief”? Yes—his behavior and alignment shift based on trauma, emotional needs, and emerging bonds.

After being possessed by the Evil Eye (a mountain yokai), Jiji doesn’t just get freed—he’s left with lingering effects. His body basically becomes a vessel that still channels some of the Evil Eye’s power. • Because of this, he has a strange transformation trigger tied to temperature: • Cold water → calms the Evil Eye’s influence, keeping Jiji in his normal, human form. • Hot water → awakens the Evil Eye’s form, causing him to transform into a monstrous, yokai-infused state. • This setup is similar to a folkloric curse: his body reacts like a switch depending on the environment, and he has to manage it carefully.

Thematically, this plays into Jiji’s arc: he’s not fully free from the Evil Eye, but rather in a symbiotic state with it. Instead of being completely destroyed or exorcised, he carries the yokai inside him—giving him both power and a burden.

Aira and Momo in Dan Da Dan, especially regarding their habit of calling each other nicknames like “pig” and the tone behind it. Here’s the scoop—tone, evolution of their dynamic, and where humor fits in:

⸻

  1. Their Playful Banter Is Rooted in Rivalry (with Growth) • At the start, Aira and Momo are rivals—Aira thinks Momo is a demon and even spreads rumors about her. Momo retaliates by dropping a basin on Aira’s head when she tries to mess with Okarun. • However, as they face supernatural threats together—like the Serpo aliens—their dynamic shifts from animosity to reluctant camaraderie and teamwork.

Aira’s Rudeness: Origins & Context

  1. A Mask of Vanity and Superiority

Aira initially presents as the queen bee—beautiful, popular, and self-assured. Under that charming exterior, she’s actually vain, arrogant, and ruthless. She enjoys manipulating others and keeping others off-balance, especially those she sees as weaker or beneath her, like Okarun or Momo.

After she accidentally hits her with a washbasin, Aira spreads nasty rumors about Momo—marking her as hostile, judgmental, and self-serving.

  1. A Messiah Complex Rooted in Trauma

Aira’s arrogance stems from deeper wounds—her mother’s death left her with unresolved grief and a pressure to be perfect. When she gains the ability to see spirits from Okarun’s aura, she interprets it as divine selection and gets convinced she’s the chosen one. This fuels her superiority and disregard for others.

⸻

Why Is She Kinda Nice to Okarun?

  1. He Saved Her—and Awakened Something Else in Her

Aira initially looked down on Okarun—seen as a loser and invisible to others. But when Okarun saves her during the Acrobatic Silky encounter, she falls for him. That moment becomes a turning point.

  1. Her Crush Is Also a Reflection of Her Growth

What begins as a crush becomes more of a catalyst for change. Fans interpret her crush on Okarun as less about romance and more about competition and connection. She pushes herself—not necessarily to win his love, but to stay relevant in their dynamic.

One Redditor aptly notes her crush is “a hamster wheel… she clings to it out of stubbornness,” because it’s tied to her frenemy relationship with Momo.

⸻

Aira’s Character Arc & Redemption

Over time, Aira grows. She begins to shed her facade, confess her wrongdoing (like starting the rumor about Momo), and become a reliable ally in battles.

Who (or What) Is Turbo Granny?

Turbo Granny is introduced as a shocking and vulgar yokai—an old woman spirit haunting a tunnel who moves at incredible speed (up to 100 km/h) and curses those who flee from her by stealing their reproductive organs. Her appearance and demeanor are harsh, foul-mouthed, and grotesque—but there’s more beneath the surface.

However, Seiko reveals a surprising truth: Turbo Granny wasn’t just causing terror—she was offering comfort to the souls of young girls who died tragically in that tunnel, acting as a guardian of the restless.

⸻

From Villain to “Tough-Love” Ally

When Turbo Granny curses Okarun and takes his “family jewels,” her power becomes trapped within him—and his body gains her immense speed and strength. Seiko eventually extracts her spirit, trapping it inside a Maneki-neko (lucky cat) doll. But her spiritual power remains with Okarun, intertwining their fates.

Now bound in this peculiar pact: • Turbo Granny begrudgingly aids Okarun and Momo in retrieving what was stolen from him. • She helps train Okarun so he can more effectively wield her power without burning out.

She may act curt, sarcastic, or abrasive—yet her actions show a grudging care and guidance.

⸻

The “Tough Love” Dynamic in Action • Protective instinct: Despite her rough attitude, Turbo Granny is protective—especially toward Momo, whom she saved from the Serpo aliens early on. • Training with attitude: Fans liken her teaching style to a tough love mentor—gruff on the outside, but trying to make sure Okarun can manage his newfound power.

Okarun tends to call Momo Ayase and Aira Shiratori very politely, using their last names with “Miss” in front (like Miss Ayase and Miss Shiratori).

That choice isn’t random — it comes from how he talks in Japanese: • In the original, Okarun is kind of shy, nerdy, and overly polite, so he often uses family names with honorifics (like Ayase-san, Shiratori-san). • English dubs sometimes handle “-san” differently — instead of keeping it as “Ayase-san,” they translate it to a formal equivalent. In this case, the dub went with “Miss” + last name to keep that polite, almost old-fashioned respect in his speech.

It highlights his personality: • He’s socially awkward and doesn’t feel close enough to casually call them by first names (at least early on). • It contrasts with how Momo and Aira talk to him — way more casually, even bluntly. • Over time, as bonds deepen, his formality softens a bit, but the dub keeps “Miss” for flavor and consistency.

Short answer: yes, Vamola does like Okarun (Takeru) in her own way, and she kisses him because it’s her way of accepting him as a suitor based on her alien/Sumerian background.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

⸻

What we know about Vamola and her motives • Vamola is one of the last survivors of the Sumerian race. • She was raised under the aim of preserving her people’s bloodline, meaning she was expected to find a worthy husband (or “strong” male) to marry. • Because of her upbringing, she doesn’t have the usual social norms for courtship or romance. She tends to act more instinctively and abruptly when it comes to matters of attraction and choosing a suitor.

⸻

Why she kissed him (in the Season 2 finale) • In the finale, Vamola recognizes that Okarun is powerful (strong enough) and worthy in her eyes. That recognition is enough for her to choose him. • The kiss is her way of declaring that she accepts him as her suitor. Because she hasn’t been taught “normal” romantic behavior among humans, she doesn’t go through a gradual buildup — she acts on impulse. • The abruptness of the kiss is partly because she lacks the social experience that humans have when it comes to dating or expressing affection.
