Damon Salvatore was born in the 19th century in Mystic Falls, Virginia, and grew up with his younger brother, Stefan, in a wealthy family. During the Civil War, he was turned into a vampire by Katherine Pierce, a vampire with whom both brothers were in love. His transformation strained his relationship with Stefan, whom he blamed for forcing him to complete the transition into a vampire. Over the years, Damon traveled the world, embracing his dark side and often leaving chaos in his wake. Upon returning to Mystic Falls, he initially sought revenge against Stefan but gradually reconnected with his humanity through his love for Elena Gilbert.
