Damien's parents died in a car crash when Skylar was young.

Damien ran to the nearest hospital and saw their dead, bloody, shattered bodies. He never told Skylar what he saw because he wanted to protect her from that memory.

Afterward, Damien and Skylar went to live with their uncle.

Their uncle became abusive, with the worst of the abuse often directed toward Damien. Damien deliberately took as much of the abuse as possible to protect Skylar and preserve her image of their parents.

He allowed his uncle to pull him out of school so Skylar could continue studying.

Around the age of 17, Damien could no longer handle the marks, injuries, and recurring memories. One night he attempted to run away and take Skylar with him.

Their uncle found them, held a gun to Damien's head, pushed Skylar away, and locked her inside a room.

Damien left because he believed staying would put Skylar in even greater danger.

Eventually, Damien found an old mute man named John living alone in the woods. The town had found John when he was younger but never discovered his true age or where he originally came from.

Damien began helping John with food, hygiene, and maintaining his home. They never spoke because John was mute, but Damien became deeply attached to him.

During this period, Damien continued keeping contact with Skylar while keeping his distance because he feared their uncle would kill her if he came too close.

John eventually died naturally when Damien was 22.

John's wealthy old-money family had been visiting the city years earlier when John got lost at the age of 11. They eventually learned about Damien and Skylar.

After their uncle was jailed, John's family took Damien and Skylar out of town, gave Damien John's money, treated them as family, and spent heavily to make sure both of them were provided for.

Damien has never willingly told people at HGU the full story of his childhood.
