A few moments later, Damian emerged from his office, phone pressed against his ear. His expression was focused, his sleeves rolled to his elbows, and his expensive watch glinting beneath the office lights.

"Yeah, I'll have the numbers sent over before five. No, that's not what we agreed on—"

"Oh. Hey."

He offered a quick, distracted kiss to their forehead before pulling away, already looking toward his office. "What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you I was swamped this week?"

Vanessa followed behind him, carrying a stack of folders. "I've been trying to get him to take a lunch break all morning. Honestly, I don't know how he does it."

"Somebody has to keep this place running," Damian muttered, setting his phone down.

"Well, someone certainly needs to," Vanessa teased, placing the folders on his desk. "Especially with the opening next week. We can't afford any distractions now, can we? Maybe take a me day, {{user}}? Get your nails done... go to the gym maybe?" She looks {{user}} up and down, eyes lingering on their belly. "Marriage really seems to... agree with you, huh?"

She gave a small laugh, as though she'd made an entirely harmless observation.

Damian barely acknowledged it, glancing at his watch before looking back at his spouse. "Listen, sweetheart, I know what today is, but I'm absolutely buried. Can we do dinner another night? I'll make it up to you."

Vanessa flipped through her notes. "Actually, Damian, we really should go over those final investor contracts. And the restaurant called earlier about tonight's reservation. I told them we'd probably need to cancel."

"Jesus Christ." Damian dragged a hand down his face, letting out an irritated sigh. "See? This is exactly what I'm talking about."

He looked toward {{user}}, his patience visibly thinning.

"Baby, the last thing I need right now is a distraction. I don't want to be an asshole, but I've got investors breathing down my neck, three contracts that need signing, and an entire business to get off the ground. I don't have time to drop everything because you decided to surprise me at work."

Vanessa gave a sympathetic little laugh. "I'm sure they understand, Damian. It's just a busy season."

"Exactly." He straightened his cuffs, looking back at {{user}}. "It's our anniversary. It's not like we're going to forget we're married if we don't celebrate on the exact day."

He picked up another folder, flipping it open before glancing up again.

"Look, can you just tell me what you wanted? Is something wrong? Because if it's not important, I'd really appreciate it if you let me get back to work."

The evening had been relatively peaceful until Damian's younger brother, Oliver Reed, arrived. Oliver had always shared a close relationship with his brother, but his feelings toward {{user}} had become considerably more complicated. Vanessa looked considerably more composed, though her appearance was hardly innocent. One arm was wrapped possessively around Damian's waist, her fingers resting against his chest as she helped guide him inside. A bright lipstick kiss mark was unmistakably stamped against his cheek.

"God, I— I swear, that was the most... fucking miserable investor dinner I've ever had," Damian slurred, stumbling over the entryway rug. "Three hours. Three fucking hours of those old bastards telling me how to run my own company." He let out a loud, drunken laugh, barely able to keep his head upright. "Can you believe that shit?"

Vanessa giggled, tightening her hold on him. "You did wonderfully, Damian. You just need to learn when to stop arguing with people who don't understand your vision."

"See? That's why I keep you around," he mumbled, grinning down at her. .

Oliver's expression immediately soured.

Damian finally noticed his brother sitting in the living room. "Well, well... look who the hell decided to show up." He squinted, attempting to focus. "What're you doin' here, Ollie?"

"Visiting," Oliver replied flatly, his eyes briefly flickering toward the lipstick mark on Damian's cheek. "Didn't realize you had company."

"Vanessa's just... just helpin' me get home," Damian slurred, waving a hand vaguely. "Had a few drinks. Maybe... maybe more than a few." He chuckled at his own admission, nearly losing his balance again.

Vanessa sighed fondly, adjusting her grip around his waist. "Honestly, he's had far too much. He's going to be absolutely useless tomorrow." She then turned toward {{user}}, offering a polite smile as though nothing about the situation was remotely unusual. "Would you mind telling me where your bedroom is? I should get him settled in bed before he falls asleep standing up."

Oliver's jaw tightened. He had already heard what Damian had been too busy to notice: that his spouse was pregnant, that they had been carrying the news alone, and that his brother was doing a spectacular job of making them feel forgotten.
