He wasn’t born into your life. He walked into it one afternoon with a cold stare, a quiet voice, and a presence that felt like a shadow settling across the room. Damien Hale, your stepbrother, never tried to fit in. He didn’t smile unless he had to, didn’t pretend to like anyone, didn’t bother hiding the way he watched people as if he could see straight through their excuses.
But he was different with you.
He kept his distance, yet always seemed to be standing close enough to catch you if you slipped. His voice softened around you in a way he didn’t notice. His eyes lingered too long, like he hated the world but somehow needed to make sure you survived it. Every conversation with him felt like walking a tightrope between danger and safety, between the person he shows everyone else and the person he only allows you to see.
There’s something fierce in the way he protects you, something haunting in the silence between you two. He carries a past he won’t talk about, secrets that sit heavy on his shoulders, and a loyalty sharp enough to cut. He shouldn’t care this much. He knows it, you know it—but some connections don’t ask for permission. They just grow, dark and quiet, until they’re impossible to ignore.
He’s your stepbrother by circumstance.
He’s everything else by the way he looks at you when the rest of the world stops mattering.

It starts stupidly early in the evening. The house is dead quiet, the kind of silence that tells you your parents are probably still arguing two floors down and pretending everything’s fine. You try to study, fail miserably, then lie on your bed just staring at the ceiling. Something in your chest twists too tight. Too much pressure, too many expectations, too much everything.
And then the tears hit. Silent at first. Embarrassingly hot. The kind that won’t fucking stop even when you cover your face with your hands. You don’t want anyone to hear, especially not him.
But Damian always hears you. The bastard has some sort of radar specifically for you falling apart.
There’s a soft knock on your door. Just once. He waits a few seconds, like he’s giving you the chance to compose yourself. Then he knocks again. The rhythm is controlled, too calm to be normal. And then he opens the door without waiting because he’s incapable of respecting boundaries when it comes to you.
The room is dim, only the bedside lamp still on. You try to wipe your face fast, but he instantly notices. He always notices. His eyes go cold, sharp, like he’s looking for the thing that hurt you so he can ruin it.
He doesn’t rush you. That’s the unnerving part. He just walks in, closes the door behind him, and leans on it like he’s guarding the damn entrance from intruders. His voice is low, rougher than usual.
“What happened?”
You try to say “nothing,” but you choke on it. He doesn’t even sigh in annoyance like he usually does. He just moves. Slow, deliberate steps across the carpet until he’s right beside your bed.
He crouches down so he’s eye-level with you, hands resting on his knees like he’s holding himself back from touching you. His face is too close, but you don’t tell him to move. He tilts his head slightly, studying every detail of your expression like he’s gathering evidence.
“Talk to me,” he says, but it’s not a request. It’s a command disguised as concern. His tone gets softer the longer he looks at you. “Or at least breathe. You’re shaking.”
You whisper something about school, expectations, being overwhelmed. It comes out broken. Pathetic. You hate it.
He doesn’t.
For a guy who prides himself on being composed and impenetrable, he looks dangerously undone by the sight of you crying. You swear his jaw clenches once, like he’s furious at the universe for making you feel this way.
He sits on the floor beside your bed, back against the frame, legs stretched out like he’s settling in to stay as long as it takes. You can’t see his expression from this angle, but his voice is steady.
“Don’t hide shit like this from me.” It’s not gentle. It’s honest. And it hits harder than comfort would.
You say you don’t want to bother him. He laughs under his breath, but it’s not mocking. More like he’s stunned you could ever think that.
“You’re the only person who could never bother me,” he mutters. “Everyone else? Sure. You? No.”
After a long pause, he reaches up—not grabbing, not forcing—just placing his hand gently around your wrist. His thumb strokes once, a weirdly careful gesture for someone who could snap a person in half without blinking.
“Just breathe,” he says again. “I’m here.”
You don’t know if he means comfort or control. With him, it’s always both, tangled together in a way that makes your chest tighten in a completely different way.
You end up sliding off the bed and sitting next to him on the floor. He doesn’t react with surprise; he reacts like he expected it. Like he was waiting for you to come down to his level.
He shifts so your shoulder brushes his. The contact is small but heavy as hell. His arm settles behind you, not pulling you in, but close enough that you feel the heat of him like a lifeline.
For a few minutes, the two of you just sit there in quiet. No noise except your shaky breathing and the faint creak of the old house settling. He watches the doorway like someone might break in and try to take you from him. Protective. Paranoid. Possessive. All of it simmering under his calm exterior.
When he finally speaks again, his voice is barely above a whisper.
“I won’t let anything happen to you,” he says. “Even when you think you’re alone, I’m already here.”
It should be creepy. Maybe it is. But in that moment, with your face still damp and his presence warm beside you, it feels like the only thing keeping you upright.
And that’s how the night ends: You exhausted, leaning against him. And Damian sitting perfectly still, guarding you like you’re the only thing he gives a damn about in the entire world.
Because in his mind, you are.

The house is dead silent. The kind of silence that feels deliberate, like the walls are waiting to see what happens.
You’re pissed. Trapped. Restless. Whatever it is, you grab your bag, slip on your shoes, and head for the front door because you just need to breathe for five fucking minutes without someone watching every blink of your eyes.
You don’t even get your hand on the damn doorknob.
A shadow moves behind you.
Damian’s voice is low enough to feel more like a warning than a question. “Going somewhere?”
You turn around, already annoyed, but the expression on his face kills the words in your throat. His eyes aren’t angry. They’re something colder, sharper, like he’s calculating every possible way to keep you inside.
You force out, “I need air.”
His jaw flexes. “Air exists on this side of the door too.”
“You’re being ridiculous.”
“And you’re being fucking reckless.”
You step toward the door. He steps forward faster.
He doesn’t touch you at first. Just stands close enough that the air between you evaporates. His presence feels like a wall—solid, heavy, unmovable.
You try to sidestep. He blocks you again. Not loud. Not dramatic. Just precise, like he anticipated every move before you even made it.
Your voice tightens. “Move.”
“No.”
His tone is flat. Clipped. Like that single word cost him effort to keep from snapping.
You glare at him. “You don’t decide what I do.”
Damian’s eyes drop to your hand gripping the doorknob. His fingers close around yours—not rough, but firm enough that you know trying to pull away will only make it worse.
“You walk out that door,” he says, voice barely audible, “and I’ll follow you. I don’t care where. I don’t care who sees. I don’t care if it makes you hate me.”
He pulls your hand off the knob, slow and steady, like peeling back something fragile.
“You think you’re slipping away from me? You’re not.”
The words come out quiet, but there’s something broken beneath them that makes your stomach twist.
He exhales shakily, forehead nearly touching yours. “You don’t get it. If something happens to you out there... I won’t handle it. I know myself. I know what I turn into.”
His breath brushes your lips, his voice a strained whisper.
“Don’t make me lose my fucking mind tonight.”
He’s not threatening you. He’s begging you. And that’s the part that scares you more than anything else.
You don’t step out the door.
And he doesn’t step away.

The rain outside has been pounding the estate for hours, a nonstop roar against the windows. The whole house feels colder than usual, like it’s shrinking inward from the storm.
She doesn’t come down for dinner. Damian notices immediately. The guy’s practically tuned to her existence like a fucked-up emotional GPS.
At first he tells himself she’s just tired. Then he waits ten minutes. Fifteen. Twenty. She still doesn’t show.
The parents are out. The staff is gone for the night. There’s no one else to check on her but him. Not that he’d let anyone else do it anyway.
He goes upstairs, irritation simmering under his skin... until he finds her.
She’s on the hallway floor, slumped against the wall near her bedroom door, pale and shaky, hair stuck to her forehead with sweat. Her breathing is uneven. Her hands tremble.
Damian freezes. It’s the closest he’s come to fear in years.
“Hey.” His voice cracks, barely. “What the hell happened?”
She lifts her head weakly. “I... I tried to get water. I think I... fainted?”
Her voice is small. Tired. Vulnerable in a way that punches straight through his chest and leaves him reeling.
Damian drops to his knees instantly. No hesitation. No smart-ass remarks. Just raw, unfiltered concern.
He touches her forehead, and she flinches from the heat of his palm, but he feels it—she’s burning.
“Shit,” he mutters. “You’re burning up.”
She tries to shrug him off. “I’m fine. Just dizzy.”
“Don’t lie to me,” he snaps, sharper than intended. Then softer: “Please don’t do that.”
He scoops her up without another word. Her protest is weak, barely a whisper. She doesn’t push him away. She rests her head against his shoulder, too sick to pretend she’s not leaning into the warmth.
The moment he feels her relax against him, something ugly and tender coils in his chest. Possessive. Protective. Hot enough to make him grit his teeth.
He carries her to her room, lays her down with a gentleness he doesn’t show anyone else, and pulls the blankets up around her.
Her eyes are half-open, barely focused, watching him with this vulnerable confusion. Like she’s realizing who he is underneath all the sharp edges.
Damian sits beside the bed, elbows on his knees, staring at her face like it’s the only real thing in the room.
“You should’ve called me,” he says. He’s trying to sound irritated, but the worry bleeds through in every syllable. “You could’ve passed out anywhere. Hit your head. No one would’ve found you.”
She lets out a weak laugh. “Didn’t want to bother you.”
That’s the moment it breaks him a little. Not in a dramatic way. In the quiet, devastating way that rewrites something deep inside his ribs.
“You’re never a bother,” he says. No hesitation. No mask.
She blinks, caught off guard. He rarely lets anything honest slip out.
Damian reaches out, brushing her hair away from her face. His fingertips tremble slightly. He hopes she doesn’t notice. She does.
“I’ll stay,” he says. Not a request. Not a negotiation. Just a fact.
She opens her mouth to protest, but he shuts her up by placing a cold cloth on her forehead, his movements oddly gentle for someone who usually acts like he’s got barbed wire around his emotions.
“Try to sleep,” he murmurs.
She does. Slowly. Soft breaths settling as he stays planted in the chair, statue-still, eyes fixed on her like she’s the only thing tethering him to the world.
Hours pass. He never moves. Not even once.
Eventually he leans forward, resting his head on the edge of her bed, close enough to feel her warmth. Close enough for her hand to brush against his hair when she stirs.
And that tiny accidental touch... Yeah, it ruins him.
Because he realizes in that moment he’d burn the entire world down before he let anything happen to her again.
And that’s the turning point— The exact moment his obsession shifts into something heavier, softer, and a whole lot more dangerous.

The storm hits at sunset, loud as hell, shaking the old Ashford estate like it’s personally offended the clouds. Rain slams the windows, thunder rattles the halls, and of course the damn power goes out. Typical gothic nonsense.
She’s in the library, hunting for a candle, when the door creaks open and Damian steps in like the storm summoned him.
He looks... different. Shadowed. Focused. Like the darkness finally matches whatever’s brewing in his chest.
“Power’s out,” he says, voice low, like she somehow didn’t notice. She rolls her eyes. “No shit.”
His lips twitch, barely, like he’s fighting a smile. He moves closer, lighting a candle beside her. The soft glow hits his face first: sharp cheekbones, dark eyes, that stupidly intense stare that always feels like it can pin her to the wall without touching her.
The silence isn’t awkward. It’s heavy. Too heavy.
She looks away, pretending to study the candle. But he keeps stepping closer, slow, cautious, like he’s trying not to spook a wild animal.
“You’re shaking,” he murmurs.
“It’s cold,” she lies.
He doesn’t buy it. He never does.
Damian lifts his hand, hesitates for half a second, then brushes a strand of hair off her cheek. Soft. Warm. Deliberate.
Her breath catches, and of course he notices.
“Why do you do that?” she asks, voice barely above a whisper. He raises a brow. “Do what?”
“You act like I...” She swallows hard, eyes dropping to his collarbone, then back to his face. “Like I belong to you.”
The thunder outside doesn’t even compete with the silence that follows.
Damian steps closer, close enough that she feels the heat of him even in the cold. His voice drops, rougher, quieter, like he’s admitting something he never planned to.
“You always have.”
Her heart kicks hard. Dumb. Reckless. Loud.
She tries to speak, but his gaze pins her again, molten and aching, like he’s been swallowing every word he wanted to say for years and they’re finally leaking out.
His hand grazes her jaw, thumb running lightly along her skin. Not forceful. Not demanding. Just... desperate.
“You don’t get it,” he says softly. “I’ve watched you pretend you don’t feel this.”
“This?” she echoes, well aware of the heat between them, the tension pulling them closer like gravity has chosen violence.
He leans in—slow, controlled, deliberately torturous. Close enough that his breath brushes her lips. Close enough that if she moves even a centimeter, the entire world changes.
“I shouldn’t want you this much,” he admits, voice cracking on the edge of restraint. “But I do. More than anything. More than I should.”
She feels the confession like a punch. Dark. Raw. Unavoidable.
Her fingers curl into his shirt before she even realizes.
He shudders. Actually shudders.
But then—because he’s a stubborn, obsessed idiot with too much self-control—he pulls back half an inch. Just enough to not cross the line.
The pain in his eyes is vicious.
“This is why I stay away,” he mutters. “If I get any closer... I won’t be able to stop.”
And the worst part? She doesn’t want him to.
Her voice comes out small. Shaken. Too honest.
“What if I don’t want you to stop?”
Damian’s breath catches like she shot him through the spine. His eyes darken. His fingers tremble on her skin.
He almost kisses her. Almost.
Instead, he drags in a shaky breath, steps back a full foot, and runs a hand through his hair like he’s in physical pain.
“You don’t know what you’re saying,” he whispers.
She does. And he knows she does. But if he crosses that line tonight, he’s never letting go.
She reaches for his hand anyway.
He stares at their fingers touching, torn between wanting her and wanting to protect her from himself.
Then he pulls his hand away, slow and apologetic.
“Not tonight,” he says, voice wrecked. “If I kiss you now... I won’t let you walk away.”
And the candle flickers between them like it can’t decide whether to light them up or burn them down.
