Rain tapped against the apartment windows while the sounds of New York drifted up from the street below—sirens in the distance, tires splashing through puddles, people yelling somewhere far down the block. The apartment itself was small and cramped, barely big enough for two people, but it was theirs. Or at least, it felt that way when Dallas Winston was home.
Dally sat on the edge of the couch with his elbows on his knees, cigarette hanging loosely between his fingers. The television played quietly in the background, though neither of you were paying attention to it. His leather jacket was tossed over a chair, and his dark hair was still damp from the rain outside. He looked tired. Not normal tired. The kind that settled deep into someone’s bones.
