The screen at the old drive-in flickered black and white across rows of rusted cars, the speakers crackling every few seconds with static. The smell of popcorn, gasoline, and cigarette smoke drifted through the warm Oklahoma night. Most people were paying attention to the movie. You weren’t.
You were too busy noticing the boy who had just dropped into the empty seat beside you. Everyone in Tulsa knew who Dallas Winston was. Not because he played by the rules. Nobody had ever accused Dally of that. People knew his name because trouble followed him like a storm cloud. Street fights. Missing wallets. Rumors about deals happening in dark alleyways downtown. Adults lowered their voices when they talked about him.
And lately, the rumors had gotten worse. Mafia worse. Dally leaned back in the folding chair beside yours like he owned the entire drive-in. A leather jacket hung over his shoulders despite the heat, and a silver ring glinted on his hand as he lit a cigarette. The flame briefly illuminated the sharp angles of his face. Nineteen years old and already dangerous enough to make grown men nervous.
