The apartment door creaked open, and Dakota stumbled inside, kicking it shut behind him.
“Yo.”
He was grinning.
Not his usual shit-eating grin, either. This was the kind of grin that immediately told you he'd done something he absolutely wasn't supposed to be doing.
In one hand, he held a beat-up CD case.
The cover was familiar.
Painfully familiar.
Your favorite band.
You stared at it.
Dakota noticed.
His grin widened.
“Oh, don't even fucking start.”
You immediately reached for it.
Dakota jerked his hand away.
“Uh-uh.”
“Dakota.”
“Nope.”
“Is that—”
“Yeah.”
“Is that actually—”
“Yeah.”
“Signed?”
Dakota held the CD up between two fingers, showing off the signatures scrawled across the case.
“Every single fuckin' one.”
Your jaw dropped.
“Where did you get that?!”
Dakota's expression instantly became smug.
“That's classified information.”
“Dakota!”
“What?”
“Where did you get it?!”
He shrugged, tossing his keys onto the counter.
“Trade secret.”
“You work at a club!”
“And?”
“You said bands sometimes come through there!”
“And?”
“You met them?!”
“Maybe.”
“You got them to sign it?!”
“Maybe.”
“DID YOU?!”
Dakota started laughing.
“Holy shit, you're desperate.”
You practically lunged for the CD again.
He held it above his head.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Fucking hell!”
“Give it to me!”
“Ask nicely.”
“Please!”
“Better.”
“Dakota, please give me the CD.”
He looked down at you, clearly enjoying every second of this.
“Hmm…”
You narrowed your eyes.
“What?”
“I dunno.”
“You literally stole my favorite band's signed CD and now you're holding it hostage.”
“I never said I stole it.”
“You're holding it hostage!”
“Details.”
“Dakota!”
He finally lowered the CD slightly, though he still kept it safely out of reach.
“Okay. I'll tell you how you can get it.”
You immediately perked up.
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“What do I have to do?”
Dakota paused dramatically.
“First…”
He tapped the CD case against his palm.
“You gotta help me with something.”
“What?”
“Not telling you yet.”
You stared at him.
“That's bullshit.”
“Yep.”
“You're such an asshole.”
“I know.”
He flashed you a grin.
“C'mon. It'll be fun.”
You folded your arms.
“What exactly am I agreeing to?”
Dakota shrugged.
“Whatever I decide.”
“That's incredibly suspicious.”
“Then I guess you don't want the CD.”
He started walking toward his bedroom.
You immediately grabbed his sleeve.
“Wait.”
Dakota looked over his shoulder.
“…Yeah?”
“You drive a hard bargain.”
“I've been told.”
You sighed.
“Fine. I'll help you.”
His eyebrows lifted.
“Seriously?”
“Yes.”
“Damn. You're actually desperate.”
“Give me the CD.”
“Not yet.”
“Why?!”
“Because I gotta think of what I want first.”
“You're kidding.”
“Nope.”
He dropped onto the couch, tossing the signed CD onto his lap.
He stared at it thoughtfully.
“Hmm…”
You sat beside him, watching anxiously.
Dakota drummed his fingers against the case.
“I could make you clean my apartment.”
“No.”
“Damn, that was fast.”
“Something else.”
“Could make you come thrift shopping with me.”
“I already do that.”
“True.”
He thought again.
“Could make you help me make peanut butter sandwiches.”
“You need help making a sandwich?”
“Shut the fuck up.”
You laughed.
Dakota rolled his eyes, but he was smiling.
“Okay, okay. I got it.”
He held the CD out slightly.
You leaned closer.
“You help me get something from the club after my shift tomorrow…”
He paused.
“And then maybe—maybe—I'll give you this.”
“What do you need?”
Dakota's grin returned.
“That's the fun part.”
He pulled the CD back against his chest.
“You gotta trust me.”
You stared at him suspiciously.
“Dakota…”
“What?”
“This isn't going to get me arrested, is it?”
He snorted.
“Probably not.”
“Probably?!”
“I'm fuckin' kidding!”
He laughed, leaning back against the couch.
“Relax. It's gonna be easy.”
He glanced at the signed CD again.
“Besides…”
His voice softened for just a second.
“You really want this thing, don't you?”
You nodded.
Dakota looked away, trying to hide the little smile creeping onto his face.
“Yeah…”
He handed the CD toward you, only to pull it away at the last second.
“Too bad.”
“Dakota!”
“Tomorrow.”
He stood up, laughing as he headed toward the kitchen.
“And don't think I'm forgetting our deal!”
“You're the worst!”
“I never fuckin' said that!”
“You literally just—”
“Didn't hear it!”
He disappeared into the kitchen.
A moment later, his voice called out:
“HEY! YOU WANT A PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH?”
You couldn't help but laugh.
“…Yeah!”
“Do you want it ala mode?!”
“What does that even mean?!”
“I DON'T FUCKIN' KNOW!”
