Friday afternoon. The house should be quiet.

It is not quiet.

You hear it before you open the front door — a sharp, rhythmic sound that doesn't quite register until you're already inside, shoes off, bag dropping from your shoulder onto the entryway floor. You follow the sound down the hall. The door to Kafka's room is open.

You stop in the doorway.

The scene assembles itself in pieces.

Stelle is on the bed, arms raised above her head, hands locked together at the wrists. No restraints — just the specific quality of someone who has been told to hold that position and has learned, at some cost, not to lower them. Her face is flushed deep red, eyes screwed shut, teeth sunk into her lower lip. Her arms are shaking. This has been going on for a while.

Firefly is face-down across Stelle's lap, arms wrapped around Stelle's waist, face buried completely into her thighs, crying — quiet, wet, thoroughly miserable sounds muffled by the fabric of Stelle's shorts. Cat ears still clipped in, brown and white, tilted sideways from all the squirming. The tail — black, plug-attached — is sitting on the bedside table like a crime scene exhibit. Her ass is pink going on red.

Kafka is sitting on the edge of the bed beside them, still in her purple blouse and apron, jeans, looking like someone who was in the middle of making lunch and had to reroute her entire afternoon because of two complete idiots she loves very much. Her hand comes down again — flat, unhurried, the same measured pace it's been at since before you got here.

Firefly's hips jerk. She makes a sound into Stelle's thighs. Stelle winces in sympathy and immediately schools her expression back to neutral because Kafka is right there.

Kafka looks up.

The annoyance is real. It is right there on the surface — the slight press of her mouth, the particular patience of someone who has already explained, twice, why this was a bad idea and is now demonstrating the consequences of not listening. But underneath it, visible if you know her face, is something warmer. The kind of fond that doesn't cancel the lecture. The kind that is, in fact, why the lecture exists.

"Ah," she says. The same tone she uses when she notes it's about to rain. "Good timing."

Stelle's eyes fly open. She twists to look at you — arms still raised, because she has not been given permission to lower them — and her expression cycles through six things in two seconds before landing on something that could generously be described as dignity.

"Twin." Her voice is a little wrecked. She has been holding this position for a very long time. "Okay. So. There's context —"

"There is no context," Kafka says pleasantly, and brings her hand down again.

Firefly makes a muffled, soggy sound into Stelle's lap. One of her hands fists tighter in the fabric of Stelle's shorts. Stelle looks down at her with an expression that is trying very hard not to be guilty and failing completely.

Kafka's gaze comes back to you. Warm. Unhurried. Faintly, terribly amused underneath the annoyance, in the specific way of someone who knew this household would produce exactly this situation eventually and has made her peace with it.

"They came to me," she explains, in the tone of someone filing a very patient incident report, "because Firefly had inserted something she was not prepared to insert, without research, without preparation, and without telling anyone until it became a problem that required my involvement." Her hand smooths over Firefly's reddened skin once — not an apology, but not nothing either. "I resolved the situation. I am now addressing the decision-making process."

Firefly sniffles loudly into Stelle's thigh.

"We just wanted to—" Stelle starts.*

"Arms," Kafka says, without looking at her.*

Stelle's arms — which had drifted down exactly two inches — go back up. Her mouth closes. She looks at you with the expression of someone who needs you to know that she has been suffering, that it is not entirely her fault, and that she has been holding her arms up for what feels like a geological era.

The afternoon light comes through the curtains gold and soft.

Kafka's eyes find yours again across the room. The annoyance is still there. So is the other thing — quiet, present, the particular warmth of someone who would not be this invested if she didn't love them both completely.

Stelle looks at you.

The look says: please. It says: I have been holding my arms up for one hundred years. It says: you are my twin and that means something.

It also says, very quietly underneath all of it: don't make her start over.

Alt 1 — Kafka's Morning

You wake up slow.

That's the first thing — the quality of it. Not the jolt-upright kind, not the alarm kind. The warm, heavy, pulled-back-under kind, where your body decides consciousness is optional and tries to negotiate.

The room is golden. Late morning light through the curtains, soft and diffused, the kind that means you slept longer than you meant to. Stelle's side of the room is — you register this without fully processing it — empty. Bed made, which she never does, which means she left early enough to bother, which means she is gone and has been gone.

You also register, slightly more urgently, that you are not alone.

She's lying beside you.

On top of the covers, propped on one elbow, facing you — dark wine-red hair loose and falling over one shoulder, round sunglasses pushed up to sit on top of her head like she put them there and forgot, or like she put them there on purpose and wants you to notice the difference. Black lace bralette. Black lace underwear. Stockings with lace trim at the thigh. Black gloves. The red ribbon tie at her throat is the only color and it sits there like punctuation.

She looks like she has been awake for a while.

She looks like she has been watching you sleep, specifically, and found this a perfectly reasonable use of her morning.

"Good morning," Kafka says. The same warm, unhurried tone she uses for everything. Her violet-red eyes move over your face with that calm, reading-the-room attention, and then drop, briefly, with the ease of someone simply noting available information.*

Your morning wood. Which is present. Which is, given current circumstances, extremely present.

Her expression doesn't change. The corner of her mouth moves — just barely.

"Stelle left early," she continues, conversationally. "She and Firefly. A date, apparently. She didn't mention it to you." A pause. "I noticed."

She reaches out and tucks a strand of hair behind your ear. Her gloved fingers are warm through the fabric. She doesn't move her hand away immediately.

"I thought you might not want to wake up alone."

The light comes through the curtains gold and easy. Somewhere downstairs, nothing is happening — the house is quiet in the specific way it gets when Silver Wolf is either deeply asleep or deeply focused, when March hasn't arrived yet, when it's just this room and the morning and Kafka looking at you like she has made a decision and is comfortable with it.

She tilts her head slightly. The sunglasses catch the light.

"You can go back to sleep," she says, "if you want."

She glances down again. Back up. The corner of her mouth does the thing again, warmer this time, unhurried and certain.

"Or I can take care of that for you, sweetheart. Whichever you'd like."

She says it the way she says everything — like it's already been decided and she's simply letting you confirm.

Alt 2 — Saturday Scroll

Stelle's bed is a disaster zone and you are both in it.

This is a normal Saturday. Stelle is on her stomach, feet in the air, chin propped on one hand, phone held in the other at the precise angle that means she's been scrolling for at least an hour. You're beside her, shoulder to shoulder, close enough to see her screen, which she has angled toward you because that's just how it works — her phone is your phone is her phone.

She snorts.

"No wait —" She rewinds four seconds, replaying the sound, and snorts again louder. "Twin. Look at this one."

She tilts the screen fully toward you. You look. It's the one with the raccoon. She has sent you this exact raccoon video three separate times via text and is now showing it to you in person. She does not find this redundant. She finds this correct.

"Incredible," she says, with complete sincerity, and goes back to scrolling.*

The room is warm. Afternoon light. The kind of low-effort comfortable that this house does extremely well.

Stelle laughs suddenly — a real one, loud and unprepared — at something on her screen, and holds the phone up over both of you to show you without pausing it, and you're halfway through watching it when the door opens.

No knock.

Evernight doesn't knock.

She's in the doorway, still in her dark layered clothes, the long trailing strands of her lavender hair moving slightly with the motion of the door. Her red eyes adjust — takes you in, takes Stelle in, takes the specific disaster radius of Stelle's bed in — and she steps inside and closes the door behind her.

Stelle twists to look at her, phone still held aloft.

"Evernight. Hey. We're watching TikTok."

Evernight looks at her.

"I know," she says.*

She looks at you.

There it is. That specific quality of attention — directed, settled, warm at a temperature that is not quite comfortable. The red limbal ring in her dark eyes. She has been here for eleven seconds and she is already looking at you like there is nothing else in the room worth looking at.

She crosses to the bed and sits on the edge of it without being invited. She folds her hands in her lap and watches you both scroll for a moment in silence.

Stelle, to her credit, simply angles the phone so Evernight can see it too.

Evernight watches approximately four seconds of the video.

"That raccoon," she says, "is doing its best."

Stelle points at her. "EXACTLY. Thank you. Twin didn't —"

Evernight interrupts quietly. Her eyes settle back on you.

She leans back slightly on her hands.

"Scoot," she says to you. Quiet. Certain.*

Not a request.

Just information about what's about to happen.

Alt 3 — Firefly's Bunny Suit

You hear Stelle before you see anything.

A sound comes from down the hall — high-pitched, sustained, the specific frequency of Stelle experiencing something her nervous system was not adequately prepared for. Not distress. The opposite of distress. You've lived with her long enough to know the difference.

"TWIN —" A beat. "TWIN GET IN HERE RIGHT NOW —"

You come.

The door to Firefly's room is open. Of course it is.

Stelle is standing in the middle of it with both hands pressed over her mouth, eyes wide, vibrating at a frequency you are fairly certain is not visible to the naked eye. Her camera — March's influence, she borrowed it last week and has not given it back — is in her hands and she is already filming.

Firefly is in front of the mirror.

Mint green. The whole thing — strapless bunny leotard, soft and fitted, the cut high on her thighs in the way that was specifically designed to be unfair. White ruffle cuffs at her wrists. The ears, mint and large, headband sitting perfectly in her silvery-blonde hair, teal ends catching the light. The gold brooch at her chest. She has her hands raised in a small uncertain gesture — caught mid-turn when you walked in — blue-green eyes finding you in the doorway with an expression that is trying very hard to hold its composure and is mostly succeeding.

Mostly.

Her cheeks are pink.

"I —" she starts, and then Stelle makes the noise again, louder, and Firefly's composure cracks into something helpless and warm.*

"Does it look okay?" she asks. Genuine question. She smooths one hand down the side of the leotard, a small self-conscious motion, and then seems to decide she has committed to this and stands up straighter. The ears don't move. Her thighs are right there. Everything about this is very much right there.*

"DOES IT LOOK OKAY —" Stelle repeats, at a pitch that should not be possible from someone her height. The camera is definitely still rolling. "Firefly. Bestie. You look —" she has to stop and collect herself. "I am going to actually pass out. This is a medical situation. Twin, back me up —"

Firefly looks at you.

She's smiling now — small, a little shy, real underneath it. The pink in her cheeks has spread.

"Stelle said you'd both like it," she says. "She was very insistent about the ears."

"I was CORRECT," Stelle says, with the energy of someone who has won something important.*

Firefly's eyes stay on yours. The smile steadies.

"Well?" Quiet. Warm. Genuinely asking.*

Alt 4 — Silver Wolf's Terms

Silver Wolf's room is blue.

Not just the lighting — though the monitors do most of the work, casting everything in that cool glow that means she has been in here for a while and the concept of natural light has ceased to apply. Controllers, headset cable, three open chip bags in various states of destruction across the bed.

Silver Wolf is on her stomach across the bed, bare back to the door, white hair twisted into its usual braided ponytail with the holographic ribbon, a handheld console in both hands. She's in — not much. White. The kind of outfit that raises the question of whether she started the day wearing more and made decisions, or whether she simply operates at this level on days she doesn't leave the room.

The answer is probably the second one.

She doesn't look up when you come in.

"Don't," she says.*

You haven't done anything yet.

"Whatever you're about to do — don't. I'm on a level." Her thumbs work the controls with the focused efficiency of someone who has already calculated exactly what this section requires and is executing it. A chip bag crinkles as she shifts her weight. She still doesn't look up. "You can stay. I don't care. Just don't talk to me."

You look at her.

The back of her. The white braid. The bare stretch of her spine. The white fabric riding up over the full curve of her ass — round, soft, pressed together where her thighs meet the bed — in a way that is doing a significant amount of work.

She reaches into a chip bag without looking at it. Eats a chip. Eyes on the screen.

"I can feel you standing there," she says.*

You say nothing.

"Annoying." The word is flat. Not actually annoyed. She shifts her hips slightly, getting comfortable, and the fabric moves, and she says, still looking at the screen, with the complete calm of someone stating the terms of a transaction:*

"You can use my pussy if you want. Just don't make a big thing of it. And be quiet — I need to focus."

A beat.

Her thumbs keep moving on the controls.

"And don't mess up my braid."

Alt 5 — Free Period

Free period.

The kind the university drops into the middle of the day like an apology — ninety minutes, no structure, use it however.

You wander.

Not for any particular reason. The weather outside is doing something lukewarm and noncommittal and you've already eaten and your phone has been the same four apps in rotation for the last twenty minutes. You take the long way back toward the main building, through the older wing, where the classrooms sit empty during off-hours.

You're not looking for anything.

You find something anyway.

The door is almost closed. Almost. The latch didn't catch — a centimeter of gap, and through it, sound. Specific sound. The kind that registers in the back of your brain before the front catches up, and then the front catches up, and you stop walking.

You push it open.

The light is afternoon gold through institutional windows, long slants of it across the floor, across the desks pushed slightly out of alignment, across the two of them —

Firefly first. She's sitting on the edge of the teacher's desk, school uniform shirt pushed open, skirt bunched at her waist, thighs bracketing someone's hips, head tipped back with her silvery-blonde hair loose and teal ends catching the light. Her face is flushed deep, lips parted, one hand gripping the edge of the desk hard enough to whiten her knuckles. She's wet everywhere that matters — thighs, the inside of her skirt, the desk beneath her — and still dripping.

Stelle is between her thighs.

Also still partially in uniform — jacket gone, shirt open, plaid skirt doing nothing to cover anything at this angle. Flushed too, hair messy.

They were both completely occupied.

Past tense, because Firefly's head comes back down, blue-green eyes unfocused and then — focusing. On you. In the doorway.

A sound escapes her that is not a word.

Stelle goes still.

A beat.

Stelle pulls back just enough to look over her shoulder, hair falling in her face, cheeks absolutely wrecked, expression cycling through: caught, panic, threat assessment —

— and then she sees you.

The panic leaves her body so fast it's almost audible.

"Oh my god," she says. "It's you."

Firefly's grip on the desk loosens. She closes her eyes for one second — exhales — and then opens them again, and the relief in her face is so genuine it's almost funny. She's still flushed from collarbone to ear. She doesn't move to fix her skirt.

"We thought you were a teacher," Stelle finishes. She turns back around fully, not bothering to adjust anything, sitting back on her heels. "Welt does rounds sometimes. Or Black Swan, and Black Swan knowing would be —" she makes a gesture. "You know."

Firefly looks at you.

Hair loose, shirt open, skirt useless, Stelle still technically between her thighs, the desk beneath her thoroughly incriminating.

The corner of her mouth curves.

"Close the door?" she asks.*

Stelle is already looking at you with a different expression now.

"Yeah," she says. "Close the door, Twin."

Alt 6 — Himeko Drops By

The smell hits you before anything else.

Something rich and slow — garlic, butter, something with wine in it. The kitchen light is warm. The rest of the downstairs is chaos.

Stelle's shoulder is pressed against yours on the couch.

She's been trash-talking Silver Wolf for the last forty-five minutes with the focused intensity of a professional, which would be more intimidating if she weren't losing. The TV screen says so. Has been saying so, repeatedly, in ways Silver Wolf has been making sure Stelle cannot ignore.

"You're just mashing," Silver Wolf says, not looking up from her controller. She's cross-legged on the armrest with the loose, unbothered posture of someone winning so comfortably they can afford to editorialize. "Like. You're just holding a direction and hoping."

"I'm ADAPTING," Stelle says.*

"To what?"

"To your BULLSHIT."

Firefly, wedged between you and the couch arm, makes a small sound that is trying very hard not to be a laugh.

Silver Wolf has not lost a single stock.

The kitchen goes quiet.

Then footsteps, and the creak of the back door, and then a voice, low and warm and carrying the specific frequency of someone who has arrived and made a decision about it.

"Kafka, darling. Your range hood needs cleaning."

Stelle's head comes up.

Himeko steps into the kitchen doorway in a cream ribbed knit that fits her like a problem, hair loose and deep red falling over one shoulder, mirror and lipstick still in hand like she did her touch-up in the car. She looks at Kafka. She looks at the stovetop. She looks at the four of you on the couch with the easy, amused sweep of someone doing a headcount.

"Oh," she says. "Smash Bros."

"We're not—" Silver Wolf starts.*

"She's destroying us," Firefly says, at the same time, helpfully.*

Himeko smiles. Sets the mirror on the counter. Leans against the doorframe and crosses her arms, watching the screen for a moment with the expression of someone who has walked into a specific kind of chaos and found it charming.

She catches your eye.

"Don't let her win on purpose," she says. "It'll go to her head."

"I can hear you," Silver Wolf says.*

"I know," Himeko says, pleasantly, and turns back toward the kitchen.*

"Kafka. Tell me what you need and I'll help. And tell me you're not using the cheap wine again — I brought the Burgundy."

From the kitchen, a sound — warm, amused, the specific register Kafka reserves for people she's genuinely happy to see.

"You can start by not criticizing my range hood."

"I'll criticize and help. I'm capable of both."

Stelle looks at you.

The look says: our household is normal. It says: extremely normal. It says: please lose this stock for me so we can go see what she brought.

On screen, Silver Wolf does something technically illegal and takes your last stock while you're distracted.

"Okay," she says, setting her controller down with total calm. "I'm bored. Let's go eat."

Alt 7 — Sleepover

It starts the way most things in this house start: with someone at the door who did not call ahead and an announcement that treats the lack of warning as a formatting choice rather than an oversight.

"SLEEPOVER," March 7th says, from the front doorway, duffle bag over one shoulder, pink hair still damp at the ends like she rushed out of a shower to get here. "I'm sleeping over. Evernight's coming too. We already decided."

You look at her.

"We decided." She steps inside. "Where's Stelle? Stelle!"

From somewhere upstairs: "MARCH?"

"SLEEPOVER."

A pause.

"GIVE ME FIVE MINUTES." A crash. "FOUR MINUTES."

Evernight arrives twelve minutes later, which is twelve minutes after March has already fully colonized the living room — blankets distributed, snack audit in progress, a playlist started on someone's phone that she has already argued with herself about twice. She's changed into a white oversized shirt that hits mid-thigh and nothing else.

She looks at you when Evernight steps through the door.

"Matched with her," March stage-whispers, gesturing at Evernight's black shirt, identical cut. "We accidentally coordinated and it's so cute and she won't admit it."

Evernight steps inside.

She's in the black version. Same cut. Same length. Her lavender hair is loose — all of it, unrestrained, just down and slightly wavy. She looks at March. She looks at the living room chaos. She looks at you.

"We did not accidentally coordinate," she says. "She told me what to wear."

"That's not—"

March makes a sound that is not quite a denial.

Stelle appears at the top of the stairs, also having made a wardrobe decision — white shirt, same basic situation — and stops when she sees March, and then Evernight, and then looks at you with an expression that is calculating something.

"Are we—"

"Yes," March says. She points at the couch. "Everybody sit. We're watching something and then we're doing face masks and then we're going to sleep and it's going to be perfect and normal and nobody is going to cause any problems."

She looks at Stelle when she says the last part.

Stelle sits down immediately.

Evernight crosses the room without hurry. She sits beside you — close, the way she always manages to end up close. Her shoulder is warm against yours.

She picks up the blanket March has left between you and settles it across both your laps without asking.

"What are we watching," she says. Not a question. Already reaching for the remote.*

Stelle looks at you across the blanket.

It is nine forty-seven pm on a Thursday and somehow this is a normal night.

Alt 8 — Firefly, Alone

The door clicks shut behind her.

She doesn't make a production of it. That's the thing about Firefly — she moves through everything at that same quiet frequency, unhurried, present, like she's made a decision well in advance of arriving and is simply following through. The room is still. Late afternoon, light going honey-warm through the curtains, the house around you carrying the specific distant hum of everybody else occupied with their own business.

She doesn't sit beside you.

She sinks to her knees.

The motion is easy. Deliberate. She's looking up at you with those blue-green eyes — clear and warm and intent the way they always are when she's focused on something she actually wants — and her hands come to rest on your thighs, and she tilts her head slightly, and the gold brooch at her chest catches the light.

"Stelle is out," she says. Quiet. Informational.*

"Silver Wolf is gaming."

"Kafka is at the market."

She says it the way she says most things — like she's presenting you with a full picture. Like she wants you to understand that she's checked. That she came here knowing what she was going to do.

Her hands move to your waistband.

"I've been thinking about this," she says, "since this morning."

She doesn't elaborate. She doesn't need to.

She takes her time.

That's the other thing. She always takes her time — like each part of this matters to her, like she's in no hurry to get to any particular destination, like she just wants to be here, doing this, with you, and the rest can wait. Her hair falls forward when she bends her head, silvery-blonde with the teal at the ends, and she gathers it over one shoulder with a practiced motion so it doesn't interfere.

The light in the room is warm.

Her eyes find yours again from below — steady, attentive, with that look she gets when she knows exactly what she's doing and is paying close attention to whether it's working.

It's working.

"Tell me," she says, "if you want something different."

She means it. That's the thing about Firefly. She always means it.

Alt 9 — Kafka's Cracked Door

You weren't trying to eavesdrop.

That's the honest version. You were just walking back from the bathroom, down the hall, the way you always do at this hour — barefoot, half-asleep, thinking about nothing — and Kafka's door is cracked.

It's always cracked. That's just how the latch sits. You know this. You've never thought about it.

You think about it now.

The light through the gap is warm and low — lamplight, not overhead, the specific amber register of a room being occupied in the evening. And sound. Not loud. Just: present. Soft. The specific quality of two people who are not thinking about whether anyone can hear them.

You stop.

You should not stop.

You stop.

The crack of the door gives you an angle you did not ask for and cannot un-see: Kafka's room, the edge of the bed, the wine-dark fall of her hair loose and down — really down, no clip, no arrangement, the way she only lets it be when she's not performing anything for anyone. The black lace. The stockings. Her back is mostly to you.

Himeko is facing her.

Deep red hair loose over one shoulder, earrings catching the lamp, lingerie the color of cream against her skin — and she's leaning in, close, one hand at Kafka's jaw, and Kafka's hand is at her waist, and they are—

—right there.

Right there, and occupied, and not aware, and you should leave, you are about to leave, you have already decided to leave—

Himeko's eyes open.

Gold, heavy-lidded, warm with something that has nothing to do with you — and then they find the gap in the door, and they find you, and everything in her expression goes very still.

Her hand stays at Kafka's jaw.

Kafka, facing away, doesn't notice. Her thumb traces something at Himeko's waist. She says something low, and Himeko's mouth opens slightly in response, and she closes it, and she is looking at you with the wide, caught stillness of someone whose composure has temporarily exited the building.

A beat.

She doesn't move.

You don't move.

Kafka leans in.

Himeko's eyes stay on yours for one more second — something complicated moving through them, not quite panic, not quite an invitation, just the raw unguarded look of someone who has been seen — and then she blinks, and some decision gets made, and her gaze drops.

Kafka still doesn't know you're there.

The lamp throws warm gold across the room.

The hall is very quiet.

Alt 10 — The Bet Comes Due

You knew, going in, that the terms were specific.

Silver Wolf always makes the terms specific. She puts them in writing, or near enough, says them out loud twice, makes sure you've understood, makes sure you've consented, because she wants to win and she wants the win to be airtight.

You agreed.

You lost.

"Okay," she says, from where she's perched on the edge of the bathroom counter, swinging her feet, still in the outfit she won in — the crop top, the shorts-that-aren't-really-shorts, the fingerless gloves. She's got her holographic ribbon tied low in her braid and she is looking at you with the calm, pleased expression of someone who has been waiting to collect on this specific bet since she placed it. "You ready?"

*She hops off the counter, not actually caring for your answer. The mirror is right there. The light in here is bright and even and leaves nothing ambiguous. "Contract says you eat it or you eat it. No negotiation on the terms post-match."

*She turns toward the mirror, bracing both hands on the counter, looking at your reflection over her shoulder. The shorts have already — they were already — look, the geometry of this situation is self-explanatory. Her expression is the one she gets when something is going exactly the way she planned and she's allowing herself to enjoy it. "Terms are: you sit under me and you make it worth my while. I will provide feedback."

She holds your gaze in the mirror.

The pleased look is still there. Under it, though — underneath the absolute composure of someone who has engineered this outcome deliberately — something warmer.

"Well?" Quiet. Certain. "Pay up."

Alt 11 — March In The Middle

It wasn't supposed to go this far.

That's the lie all three of you told yourselves at the start, which lasted approximately until March stopped pretending the movie was interesting and Stelle stopped pretending she hadn't been watching March instead of the screen, and then it wasn't a lie anymore, it was just the truth of what was already happening.

Now it's this.

March is loud.

Not in the way she's loud everywhere else — performative, deliberate, the full-production March 7th presentation. This is the other version. The one that slips out before she can decide whether to let it. Her hands are in Stelle's hair, fingers curled, grip that tightens every time you move, every time your hips drive forward and her breath shocks out of her in something that is trying to be a word and isn't quite.

Stelle has her by the waist.
