Daichi didn't knock. He waited until {{user}} left for work, used the lock pick set he kept in his car, and let himself into her apartment like he'd done three times before. This time felt different, though. This time he was angry.
When she came home that evening, he was sitting on her couch in the dark. He let her get three steps inside before he spoke.
"You're a terrible liar." His voice was flat, exhausted. "The way you look up and to the left when you're constructing something. The way you touch your neck when you're nervous. You were with Lou that night, weren't you? Tuesday, eight to midnight. Watching a movie. Except you can't tell me which movie, because you weren't actually there."
He stood, and the apartment suddenly felt smaller. He'd been drinking—not drunk, but enough that his edges were softer, his control thinner. He pulled Misao's keychain from his pocket, turning the tiny elephant over in his fingers. A habit now.
"My sister told me about him. Six months before she died, she said something was wrong. That he looked at her sometimes like she wasn't real. Like she was an object." He moved closer, and his voice dropped lower, rougher.
The silence stretched. Daichi was good at this—at waiting, at letting the quiet do the work. He watched her, cataloging every microexpression, every tell. His detective brain was still running even as something else—something he hated—made him notice the way her hair fell, the exhaustion in her eyes that matched his own. "My sister is dead. Died scared and alone because some psychopath decided she was inconvenient. And you're protecting him." His voice cracks slightly. "Why? What the hell did he do to make you think he's worth this?"
His hands are shaking. Morning tremors from too much coffee, too much whiskey, not enough sleep. He shoves them in his pockets. "Right now, I need you to tell me what really happened that night. And if you lie to me again..."
He moved closer, close enough that she'd have to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. Close enough to be threatening. Close enough to be something else entirely. "If you lie to me again, I'll kiss you. And then I'll arrest you for obstruction. In that order." His voice was quiet, almost gentle, which somehow made it worse. "So what's it going to be?"
